AV Fair “Blue Ribbon” Volunteers By: Sue Craft

LPA members Dale Ware and Pat Ware were recognized at

the 2014 AV Fair Kickoff Dinner as recipients of the “Blue

Ribbon Award.” Dale and Pat both have volunteered at the

exhibit for over 25 years! The LPA has been a sponsor of the

photography exhibit since the early 1970’s.

Over the years, the Wares have participated in: decorating

and hanging photos in the exhibit, assisting on take-in and pick-

up days, monitoring the exhibit, clerking, and photographing the

event. Back in the “old days,” they helped arrange dinner for

the judges for many years, until the AVF took over providing

lunch.

The photography exhibit has grown and transitioned from

the early days where prints were made from film and clunky

projectors were used for slide shows; to now, where images can

be created from digital cameras and even cell phones! Dale and

Pat have been a part of that progression, and are still always

among the first to sign up each year to participate, and

volunteer.

Thank you Dale and Pat for being dedicated to promoting

the art of photography in the community, both at the AV Fair

and for the Lancaster Photography Association.

AV Fair Photography Exhibit News By: Douglas Wade & Sue Craft

The pace is picking up as we get ready for the 2014 AV

Fair. Opening day is August 15th. This year’s theme is “Poultry

in Motion”. Did you know that the LPA first started organizing

the AV Fair Photography Exhibit back in the 1970’s? That’s

over 40 years ago! It’s a great feeling to keep up the

philanthropic efforts started by some of the early founders of the

LPA. Our print entries have grown and remained strong for over

40 years. This year we have 2002 entries (1626 print and 376

digital), which is an increase over last year.

Our 2nd Annual AV Fair Photo

Mounting Workshop was offered to the

community on July 22nd and was well

attended with over 40 people, most of which

were newcomers wanting to know how to

mount their photos for entry in the fair. The

AV 4-H photography leader brought students

who needed help in mounting their

photographs for the exhibit. Participants

were asked to bring their photos and foam

core. The LPA provided the spray adhesive,

and members assisted by providing matte

cutters, box cutters, straight edges and hands

on assistance. If you missed the workshop,

check out the AV Fair Photo Mounting

Workshop video created by Matt Rondel

with his 5D Mark II camera, Adobe Premiere

and Photoshop CS5. (Photos by Lee Garner)

Decoration Day for the photography

building was Wednesday July

23rd. It’s amazing to see how the

“barn” transforms into a

Photography Exhibit. The

decorations have been kicked up

a notch again, thanks to Denis

Lust and his helpers. (Group

The Annual AVF Kickoff

Dinner was Friday July 25th.

The LPA group was well represented with 24

members in attendance. A good time was

had by all. All who volunteered the previous

year were invited to attend. LPA members

Dale and Pat Ware were recognized as Blue

Ribbon Award recipients for volunteering for

over twenty years at the AV Fair

Photography Exhibit. Kurtiss Humphrey was

a lucky raffle basket winner. The Home Arts

Department (which includes Photography)

won the Committee of the Year Award.

S4C Report By: Bonnie J. Matthews

I have not been notified of any

upcoming changes that have been

made at that this time.

Even though we are on a break

until October, please keep those

pictures coming to me. Let’s start the 2014-2015 year with a lot

of fresh, new images to be considered for Interclub

competitions. For S4C Interclub and to participate as an

Individual, you MUST have a UEN to enter. If you do not have

one, please go to the S4C website and request yours today! The

first competition is October 11, 2014 with the entry portal

opening on September 13, 2014 and submission deadline is

October 4, 2014.

For those entering in the AV Fair, if you have winners and

for those that feel they have excellent images, please send me

your images with your UEN so I can begin the process of

entering the LPA in the Inter-club competitions. If you have any

questions about S4C, or wish to send my images, please email

Bonnie Matthews at [email protected]

upload to the website is August 22, 2014.

On August 26, 2014, enjoy an ice cream sundae with your

fellow members and watch the slide show of our members

photos.

Members can comment on their images, talking about

where they were taken or how they were shot. If you don’t

want to comment, that’s OK. We’ll just show the images

for everyone to enjoy.

We all look forward to seeing and hearing about your

images. Don’t be bashful; even if you’re a novice, we’d

love to see what you created. It’s not intended to be a

critique event…just a fun evening amongst us

photographers.

Thank you to all the wonderful, hardworking dedicated

volunteers who help in Photography!

Important Dates:

August 5th – Volunteer/Clerk Training at home of Douglas

Wade at 6PM

August 6th – Take In Day for Prints 9AM - 8PM (8:30AM

for volunteers)

August 7th – Print Hanging Day 9AM – 5PM

August 15th – AV Fair Opens at 4PM

(Wednesday, August 6th) and Print Hanging (Thursday, August

7th). For Judging Days, August 9th - 10th, only those who

attended volunteer/clerk training or have been pre-approved to

be there are allowed in the building.

For liability reasons, the AVF Fair asks that all volunteers

attend Volunteer Training. To be a clerk, or a backup, you must

have attended Volunteer/Clerk Training in 2012, 2013, or 2014.

We have filled our volunteer clerk roster for 2014. New

volunteers are encouraged to attend the Volunteer/Clerk training

at the home of Douglas Wade on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at

6PM. Clerks MUST attend, as it will be specifically

photography related. It’s easy and it’s fun!

ALL volunteers need to fill out an AVF Volunteer

Application once. Either mail in, or return to AVF Chairperson,

Douglas Wade or Sue Craft. Thank you for volunteering!

AVF Volunteers who put in over 20 hours of volunteer time

in 2013 will be getting a “Credential Pass” for 2014. All other

volunteers will earn free entry/parking passes, based upon

volunteer hours. For every 4 hours of volunteer time, you can

earn 2 entry passes, and 1 parking pass, to Lot F (near gate 3)

which is nice and close. When volunteering for the Fair, don’t

forget to sign in every time you volunteer. If you volunteer this

year, you’ll be invited to next year’s Kick-Off Dinner!

General Meeting Program - Photo Critique

August 19, 2014 at 6PM By: Rock Myers

Our LPA masters will be critiquing your photos on August

19, 2014. You can submit 5 photos for an anonymous critique

on our website link. The deadline for submitting your photos is

August 15, 2014 at 11:59PM.

Three of our master level LPA photographers will be

critiquing our images with the goal of helping us improve our

photography. They will consider composition, exposure,

sharpness, visual impact, etc. The critiques will be anonymous

so only you will know when your image is being discussed.

This program is a way to measure the level of interest of

our members for photo critiques. If participation is good, we’ll

continue the program.

AV Fair Midway Fun

Taken August 2012 at the AV Fairgrounds

by Scott A. Shackelford

I viewed this scene repeatedly while driving the agriculture

shuttle that started at the parking lot behind the Turf Club. Each

time I turned around at the far turn next to the midway, this was

my view. So at the end of my shuttle-driving time slot, I got my

camera and returned to photograph it.

Steps of Eternal Grace

Taken May 2000 in Jerusalem, Israel

by Scott A. Shackelford

A favorite documentary shot, these steps are one of very few

places left where Christ certainly must have actually walked.

After his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was taken to

the house of the Chief Priest, Caiaphas, partially visible at the

top left. These steps, more than 2000 years old, and were, then,

the only direct path to this destination from Gethsemane. In

2000, these steps were fully accessible, but now are fenced for

preservation purposes.

Page 12: LPA Desert Exposure

Page 12 www.lpaphotography.org August 2014

“Scotty’s Castle” by Dwight Franke:

I took the picture at Scotty's Castle which is just north of Death

Valley. I liked the changing leaf colors against the stark hills in

the background and the relatively barren ground. The photo was

taken with a Nikon D800 and a 24-70MM lens at f11 so I could

have reasonable depth-of-field. It is a full frame shot except I

cropped down to eliminate some of the cloudless sky. I

processed it in NIK HDR Efex Pro 2 software as a single photo

to bring out the colors, separate the leaves from the background,

darken the sky and added a slightly dark vignette at the corners.

How Did You Do That? (Continued from page 10)

“Edwards Lake” by Darren Cole:

I took this picture at Edwards Lake, Edwards AFB, about 3

miles north of the South Gate Entrance on April 2014, around

6PM.

This was an interesting circumstance for me, my first try at

high dynamic range! I saw this amazing sunset after a rain storm

over the desert. I drove on looking for some standing water to

reflect it. When I found it, I stopped the car and looked at my

camera and back at the scene. I wanted detail in the sky, the

water and the sand formation.

I mounted my Pentax K-30 with 18-135mm kit lens to my

travel tripod. I focused around the midpoint of the peninsula

using the back focus button (to ensure the focus would not

change when I hit the shutter release). I used a small f-stop

(probably f16) to help make the water soft and dreamy and

make sure everything was in focus. In manual exposure mode I

set a correct exposure on the sky (at about 60-90 degrees away

from the sun) and then bracketed from -4 to +4 EV in 1 stop

increments around that.

TIP 1: Be aware of your camera’s built in bracket mode.

Mine will bracket aperture instead of shutter speed even in

manual. I always bracket manually.

TIP 2: Use a wireless cable release or your camera’s built

in timer to trigger the shutter to minimize movement.

TIP 3: Turn off image stabilization when using a tripod. If

the processor can’t sense movement, it tends to add it, causing

the slightest blur.

Post Process: So now I had 9 images, none of which were

much use on their own. I imported everything to Lightroom. I

found the best image with sky detail; then corrected white

balance, adjusted temp and tint, pulled down the highlights,

opened up the shadows, performed lens correction, did some

noise reduction, and added some sharpness. Then I selected all

9 images and synced the exact adjustments I made to the first

one to the other 8. This way, all the images had the same color

balance and corrections so all the pixels of all the images were

in the same place.

From Lightroom I selected the best 2 images with sand and

water detail and exported them to Photoshop using the HDR

option to combine them as a single 32 bit image. Then I went

back to Lightroom and selected my perfect sky image and

opened that as another layer in the same project. I used inverted

(black) mask on one layer so that the perfect sky was visible

(which excluded the underexposed ground) and the ground was

visible (which excluded the blown out sky). The ground still

did not have enough detail. However, because it was a 32bit

image, I could dodge and burn (set brush to overlay, use a very

small flow and opacity ~ 10%) the details that were hiding in

the pixel data.

TIP 4: For each change you make, create a new layer in

case you want to remove or change certain elements.

Now that I painted in the details that I wanted, it was time

to do some cleanup! The sky had small irritating bits of clouds

which were also reflected in the water. The water had several

reeds in it taking away from the smooth finish I wanted. I also

had several black dots due to the small f-stop. Using the clone

stamp tool and healing brush in Photoshop I was able to remove

it all. I did some additional dodge and burning on the clouds to

create a little more dramatic contrast, and to the peninsula to

create some interesting light.

The vignette was accomplished by creating a new layer

with all my adjustments and putting it into multiply. I used the

selection tool to create a rectangle around the majority of the

image leaving a border outside the selection. I modified the

rectangle into a circle and added lots of feathering and hit delete

which removed the “multiplied” shading from within the

selected area leaving a darker vignette in the boarder.

I performed additional noise reduction. Then I created a

new layer with all my adjustments and another inverted mask

and sharpened that layer (using unsharp mask – this term still

doesn’t make sense to me). I removed the mask (painting with

a white brush at around 10% flow) at the nearest area of the

peninsula to increase the sharpness at that area only.

Finally, I moved it back to Lightroom and was pretty happy

with it…then I added just a little more contrast.

So, when did I decide on Black and white? I developed

this 4 different ways (3 were color) during 4 different

Photoshop sessions (each time learning a little more about

Photoshop). Each one mimicked the mood I happened to be in

that day. The first one was heavy on magenta, the second one

more natural looking, the third one heavy on reds. Finally, I

tried B+W. The B+W portrayed the drama and texture I was

after at the cost of the beautiful colors I saw. Oh well, as the

Rolling Stones say, “You can’t always get what you want!”
