The Films

Iron Man VS Open Water

Page 3: Low budget vs high budget

Cost of Production Iron Man (2008) had a huge money budget of $140

million. This is due to the number of special effects in

the film and the big name actors such as Robert

Downey Jr.

Open water (2003) was the opposite as the film was set

in the ocean which would require no large amount of

money. As this was set in the ocean no real drastic

effects were needed to be made as everything you saw

was real such as the sharks. Overall this film had a

very low budget of $500,000. No big name actors were

used either.

Money made With only having a budget of $500,000 Open water still

managed to conjure up $52,100,000 worldwide. Most

of the budget would have been spent on safety

equipment rather than big effects. This film only cost

around $120,000 to make.

With a huge budget of £140m you would expect lots of

money made. This film delivered with whopping gross

earning of just under $320m at $318,412,101.

Production companies Iron man had everything going for it with one of the most famous/well

known companies producing it. Everyone would have no queries of the

name Marvel Studios. This company is parented by Marvel Entertainment

which is wholly owned by The Walt Disney Company. Marvel studios has

been involved in a few films to exceed one billion dollars (revenue) in

North America films such as X-men and spider man. These 3 films are

possibly 3 of the most well known films in the USA.

Open water also had a huge name producing company. Lionsgate

Entertainment which as of 2013 was named the “most commercially

successful mini major film and television distribution company in North

America while also being ranked 7th for the most profitable movie studio.

Lionsgate have also produced many other huge name films such as ‘The

Hunger Games’ and “Saw III”.

Genres Marvel Studios are mostly known for their Superhero films. Marvel

have produced many Superhero films such as : ‘The Avengers’,

‘Captain America’, ‘Iron Man’ and Thor. All of these named

Superhero films have all been a huge success.

On the other hand Lionsgate Entertainment seems to differ from

Marvel Studios as they have produced a greater variety of Genres.

They have produced horrors such as ‘Texas Chainsaw’ and ‘Saw

III’. They have produced Rom-coms such as ‘Good Luck Chuck’

and ‘Diary of a Mad Black Women’. Lionsgate have even produced

a mystery horror-thriller in ‘The Mid-night Meat Train.

Target Audience Due to the sheer number of Superhero movies Marvel Studios

have produced its simple to suggest they seem to target their films

at Superhero film fanatics and people who love fast-paced,

Supernatural films. Superhero film fanatics seem to be huge fans

of Marvel Studios due to their many successful Superhero films.

Lionsgate seem to have more of a varied target audience due to

their variety of film Genres. They seem to target fans of Rom-com,

horror, comedy-drama and thriller.

The Most successful? Overall the most successful I feel is Marvel Studios. These films get most

of the attention from fans due to the large amounts of money they spend.

Although Lionsgate may spend less money and are also very successful

Marvel films are always hugely talked about and usually ‘Must watch’

films. Marvel have produced some of the most famous films Such as the

Iron man films which have earned millions.

Marvel studios is a subsidiary of ‘The Walt Disney Company’ which is

ranked 3rd on the Hollywood most famous studios. This shows how

popular Marvel Studios films really are, not just In USA but in the whole of

Europe.
