Ichi-Go Ichi-Ye – Attitude of Sangha for listening 1. Listen as if you are listening for the first time. 2. Listen as if the message is for you alone. 3. Listen as if this is the last thing you will ever do in your life. We often hear the term “O-Bon”. We should be familiar with it, and it should give us great inspiration. It is a state in which we, deep in our minds, all wish to be happy-ended. We have all heard the story of the great disciple Mokuren (Maudgalyana), the story of the good son, as the origin of O-Bon. When I was in Japan, one member advised me, “Young Sensei, every year at O-Bon time we hear the story of Mokuren, the good son. We know that story very well. Could you please tell us another story this year?” With his comment, I thought, there is a complete difference between knowing and understanding. So I said to that person, “I’m very anxious that you really understand what Mokuren experienced, and how the Buddha led him to realize the truth-reality of life. This is not just a story of the good son but a story of true and real happiness. I suppose you shall have to listen and reminded of this story again and again at O-Bon time.” Anyhow, I think that you too will be hearing the same O-Bon story at the Valley temples during this O-Bon season again. I hope you remember the three steps to the ‘true listening’, that I suggested in my article last year. The first step: You enjoy the story as it is. The second step: You realize the intention of the teller. The third step: You recognize that the story is not remote from you, but yourself. THOUGHTS FROM THE SANGHABy Sensei Yuki Mori, Minister’s Assistant

Six Holes (Ana)Human beings and all animals have eyes to see (me), nose to breathe (hana), ears to hear (mimi), umbilical

cord attached to the mother till birth (heso), mechanisms to excrete waste (daiben, shoben). If we lose any of these functions we may become blind, unable to smell, can’t hear sounds even when someone is gossiping about you, unable to eat but just gaze the food in front of you, if the umbilical cord is detached, baby in the womb wouldn’t survive, if the wastes are not excreted from the body, a person can die within a short period of time.

We, ordinarily think nothing of our health (atarimae) until we lose it through sickness or accident. Then we can feel appreciation for the functions of eyes, nose, mouth and other bodily functions that keeps us alive.

Like the holes of the nose (hana no ana), holes of the ears (Mimi no ana), holes for waste excretion (oshiri no ana), eyes, mouth, and belly button also are considered to be holes. Through sickness these holes may become clogged or closed, therefore, one can’t see well, hear well or suffer from not being able to excrete.

Out of those holes one can excrete snot (hana kuso), ear wax (mimi kuso), belly button grime (heso no aka), feces (daiben), urine (shoben) and they all contain the word dung (kuso) which are considered to be filthy. In fact, from the mouth (ha kuso) and eyes (me kuso) dung is also excreted. However, our daily life can be difficult if those six holes are not functioning properly. Among the six holes which do you think is the most important hole?

This is a Dharma talk I heard from a Reverend from Japan 40 years ago. When human being dies holes of the eyes, nose, mouth, heso, oshiri begins to closes immediately, and loses its function. As the expression, “dead men don’t talk”, hole in the mouth closes is no longer able to talk. Until the body becomes cold holes of the ear remain open and the sounds coming through can be heard. Thus there seems to be a reason for someone to scream into the ears of a person who are unconscious, to get them to wake up.

In the Buddhist tradition when a minister receives a message of a death in a hospital or a home, he would rush there immediately, no matter the time of the day to conduct a pillow service (makura kyo). Reason for that is body begins to gradually stiffen, yet while still warm, sounds of the nembutsu from the makurakyo echoes in the ears and the deceased can still hear it. It’s been said that hearing the nembutsu even once is a gateway to the Pure Land. I feel, regardless of who we are, whether standing on the verge of life or death, Buddha would never abandon. He wishes for us to hear the nembutsu once, or call the name once to assure our birth in the Pure Land.

Therefore, once the body becomes cold and the holes of the ears are closed, makurakyo is of no purpose and the power of Amida Buddha or the nembutsu is of no avail. Because we can hear the nembutsu through the ears, ear holes are considered to be the most important among the six holes.

We don’t know what holds for us in the future, but for those who are relaxed about hearing the nembutsu teachings, you are taking a big gamble. You may miss the last chance to hear the nembutsu of the makurakyo.

As I hear more of the meaning of the nembutsu I think there is a wondrous similarity between water and nembutsu. Everyone is aware of the importance of water and nembutsu. Without water our lives won’t be sustained. Without nembutsu there is no connection with the Buddha. If you mix cement with water the cement would become hard and solid, and if you would soak a dried shiitake or dried konbu they will soften and become malleable. Depending on the use of the water it has the power to soften or harden material. If you mix human mind (bonbu) with nembutsu, as Shinran states the bonbu is transformed into a diamond like shinjin.

When ego filled, self-centered person is immersed in the nembutsu feelings of gratitude and okagesama is awakened and becomes a more humble and compassionate person. Nembutsu has the power to turn a human to become a person of diamond-like shinjin or soft and warm, compassionate, humble being. Nembutsu has the power to transform a person.Namu Amida Butsu

Yuki Mori

BUDDHIST WOMEN’S ASSOCIATIONBy Julie Doi, BWA Newsletter Writer

Central Cal Obon time is here! Visalia will lead the way with the first Obon on June 27! Parlier has been practicing for the Obons. We are very fortunate to have Lindsay and Leslie Guerra as instructors for the obon dancing.

In June we started with the Sangha Gathering on June 7th. Yuki did the short talk on Three Treasurers. Yuki and Toshie did the adult class. Thank you Curtis and Cheryl for providing the spaghetti lunch that day.

Thank you Group 2 for cleaning the church on June13th. Our Bishop’s and Lady Ohtani Service was the next day and Toshie did an outstanding job with the dharma talk. The chairman was Steve Sasai and the MA’s lead the chanting and setup the altar. The City district led by Cheryl and Gail Hachiya were in charge of the refreshments and desserts.

The Medaka No Gakko Class started on June 15th and ended on June 27th. 24 children attended the session. This is a good experience for young children to learn about Japanese culture, food and crafts.

We have many oppportunities to enjoy Buddhist Education Classes and lecturers in the Central Valley. See list of classes on the attached flyer. The 1st Monday of every month we have a BEC Lecturer Series with many outstanding speakers. Curtis has a Buddhist Discussion Class the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Toshie and Yuki have a chanting class the 3rd Monday on the month. Our Sangha Gathering sessions are short but informative, fun for the kids and we have great food! Calvin will do a short talk on the history of the Obon on July 5th.
