Earth Day, Every Day Earth Day at Lincoln is celebrated with an entire week of activities focused on raising awareness of environmental challenges and offering daily activities to help students make lasting changes. The week, all organized and implemented by Lincoln’s Green Team and a dedicated team of staff and teachers, encouraged student participation and reinforced that Lincoln cares about our environment! On Earth Day, the entire school was encouraged to wear green and to make an Earth Day pledge. The most impactful day of Earth Week was Thursday, which was devoted to measuring and sorting one entire day of lunch waste. The results surprised and shocked the Green Team students that participated. The week also included a daily “green” tip of the day given by the student Green Team and a waste-free lunch competition. Dear Lincoln families,

I want to thank you for your support of Lincoln’s TLC program. TLC contributions pay for salaries for our art teacher, technology teacher, instructional aides, reading specialist, and additional PE specialist. This directly impacts the quality of education our students receive at Lincoln. Our TLC program distinguishes us from other districts and demonstrates our commitment to the whole child.

The art and technology teachers are an integral part of our instructional program. Not only do these teachers sponsor some of our most beloved programs, they join with classroom teachers to create truly unique integrated learning experiences for students that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Ask your students about their favorite memories at Lincoln. I predict you will hear about many special learning opportunities that are sponsored and/or supported by TLC.

We are so fortunate to be able to have these programs because of your support of TLC. Thank you for being such wonderful, parent-partners as we work together to make Lincoln the best school in the world for our children.

In partnership, Carrie Gammel

PTA President’s MessageGreetings Lincoln Families,

This latest edition of our Lincoln Log impresses on me how fast the year has flown. We’ve already voted in next year’s board and my brain is buzzing with ideas for that year as well as how we finish off this year. Along with experienced board members who will either continue in their role (like me) or move to a different role, I’m excited to have six new faces joining us. Our returning board members are:

Becky Chanawatr – Treasurer (kids in K, 4th and 5th )

Lyna Guerena – EVP (kids in 4th and 5th)

Darlene Niu – Recording Secretary (kid in 2nd)

Annette O’Hearn – Financial Secretary (kid in 5th )

Cindy Paulsen – Parliamentarian (kid in 5th)

Stacey Schneider – 2nd VP TLC Treasurer (kid in 5th)

Joining us for 2015/2016 are:

Kelly Struve – 1st VP TLC (kids in 1st and 3rd)

Sharon Siegel – 3rd VP Communications (kid in K)

Diane Halvorsen – 4th VP Programs (kid in 1st)

Stephanie Barrymore – 5th VP Community (kid in 5th)

Dorothy Joynt – Corresponding Secretary (kid in 5th)

Krys Mrozowski-Parrish – Historian (kid in 3rd)

As you can see, the board not only has experience and new faces, but our children will span all the grades of our school which I think helps keep us connected and aware of what is happening in each grade. From what I’ve gotten to know of them, they are buzzing with their ideas as well. I’m excited to see what they will bring to the table. It will surely influence how we can positively continue to make Lincoln’s PTA a relevant advocate for all our children.

You can help us be effective advocates by providing your feedback to us. Be on the lookout for a survey, coming to you soon. We want to know what programs you feel have been effective as well as where we can do better (We realize there is ALWAYS room for improvement!) So let us know with your words. We truly want to do right by your kids!

Financial outlook – we look forward to providing you a financial forecast soon. We want to make sure you have the whole picture and understand how what we’ve managed to raise this year will influence what we can provide our children and their teachers next year.

Finally - A BIG thank you to all the families who have done what they can this year, be it financially or in their volunteer efforts to support our Lincoln Scholars. It all leads toward our children’s success!

Best wishes for you and your family,

Karen Thurston

Tech Week at Lincoln

In connection with our first ever PTA sponsored "Tech Week,” our upper-grade students had the opportunity to conduct the "Toothpaste Experiment.” 20 full sized tubes of toothpaste were provided by Daghlian Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. The kids were asked to squeeze all the toothpaste out of the tubes. Next they were asked to get the toothpaste back in. One kid lamented, "Ohhhh - I regret I ever did this!" While they gamely tried to accomplish the task, they ultimately realized it was hopeless. When asked how they might compare this to social media - the light-bulb

went on and they made the connection that once they put information out there, there is no getting it back. Mission accomplished!

Lincoln parents and students donated items and volunteered their time to pack care packages for our troops stationed overseas. Our students loved drawing pictures and writing thank you notes to our soldiers! A total of 89 packages were shipped out to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq,Qatar,

Egypt, Bahrain, and Japan. We want to thank all our families and students who have contributed to this awesome program!
