Extend the nursing workforce for TB/ MDR-TB
ensuring that nurses:
• are equipped with relevant knowledge,
skills to combat TB/MDR-TB
• train/supervise other health care

DOTS strategy
• are able to effectivly work with mangers,
physicians, other health care professionals
• are participating in policy discussions at
local and national level

PROJECT RATIONALE
• The role of managers for effective TB and MDR-TB control?- Serve as facilitators for doctors, nurses and community level
health workers
- Financial and organisational support for continuous &
uninterrupted supply of TB treatment drugs
• The IHF generic materials and tools:- Not textbooks on TB and MDR-TB control
- Clarify the roles and skills for managers (some of whom may be
medics, nurses or administrators) in developing and maintaining
a successful and sustainable TB and MDR-TB control
programme.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
• Preparation of a Training Manual for
hospital/clinic/health facility managers engaged
specifically in TB and MDR-TB Control
programmes.
• Course participant to emerge prepared to assume
and exercise the vital role in leadership, planning,
implementation and follow-up of more effective
and sustainable TB and MDR-TB control
programmes.

PHASE I OF PROJECT: 2004 - 06
• Field testing of the product - Conduct of Workshop Version of
Manual, March 2006 in Pretoria, South Africa
• Publication (paper, CD-ROM) of workshop version of the manual
• Posting of manual on IHF official website
• Update of paper version of manual to include 'infection control' and
XDR elements and posting on IHF website; additional IHF MDR-TB
primary partners' reference material, namely ICN & WMA
• Consultation meetings with collaborating organizations - ICN, IFRC,
WHO and WMA
• Presentation and exhibition of the manual to international hospital
and health facility management network/audience
