Dominatori assoluti dell’ultima edizione di Light+Building, al centro di dibattiti econtroversie, i LED sono i grandi protagonisti della scena attuale della luce. Perchétutto questo interesse? Al di là delle immagini intriganti di illuminazioni colorate espettacolari, il LED rappresenta bene quello che si chiede oggi all’innovazioneindustriale: meno consumi, più rispetto per l’ambiente e maggiore qualità estetica. Anche noi di Lighting abbiamo voluto dare un contributo per una miglioreconoscenza dei LED, dedicandogli gran parte di questo numero della rivista, con interventi di esperti e addetti ai lavori. Non sono pochi, infatti, i temi chevanno inquadrati correttamente per avere una conoscenza piùapprofondita di questa innovazione. Un esempio per tutti: spesso si parladei LED e delle loro prestazioni (efficienza, durata di vita, ecc.)dimenticando che la sorgente luminosa va poi montata in unapparecchio e sarà questo a determinare il risultato finale. Ecco perché abbiamo inserito anche una selezione di apparecchi aLED, che offrono al lettore una panoramica aggiornata di come si puòapplicare questa nuova luce nei diversi ambiti.Buon viaggio, quindi, nel mondo dei LED e delle sue applicazioni.

Absolutely dominating the recent edition of Light+Building, at the centreof debates and controversies, LEDs are the current stars of the light scene. Why isthere all this interest? In addition to the intriguing images of coloured andspectacular lighting, the LED embodies what is now asked of industrial innovation:lower consumption, more environmentally friendly and better aesthetic quality. We at Lighting Magazine also wanted to contribute towards a better understandingof LEDs by devoting the majority of this edition of the magazine to them throughinterviews with experts and trade operators. There are in fact many subjects thatneed to be correctly addressed to have a more in-depth knowledge of thisinnovation. For example, often when we talk about LEDs and their performance(efficiency, duration, etc.), we forget that the light source is then mounted into adevice and this will go on to determine the end result. This is why we have also included a selection of LED devices, offering readers anupdated overview of how this new light can be applied in different fields.So, enjoy your trip into the world of LEDs and their uses.

A POCHI PASSI DAL CASELLO autostradale diDalmine, sulla Milano-Venezia, due torrisvettanti danno il nome a un nuovo colossocommerciale, da poco inaugurato.Il centro “Le Due Torri” occupa un’areacomplessiva di 95 mila metri quadrati, aStezzano, in provincia di Bergamo e comprende7 unità di grandi e medie superfici, dove sonostati collocati un ipermercato, 90 negozi, 10 unità per ristorazione, oltre a parcheggi eviabilità accessoria per 94mila metri quadrati.La costruzione è frutto della partnership fra ilGruppo Policentro, leader nella realizzazionee gestione di ipermercati a livello nazionale,l’immobiliare Altarea Italia e il Comune diStezzano. destinazione commerciale (mobilifici), e dellaquale il Comune ha pilotato una rinascitaurbanistica che prevedesse nuovi spazicommerciali (con l’obiettivo di nuova fruizionedelle aree e creazione di posti di lavoro) e unarevisione della viabilità. L’iter per la costruzione ha preso il via nel2006. Fra gli input d’avvio quello di preservaregli elementi storici dell’area, e in particolare ledue torri alte 40 metri, utilizzate dal vecchiomobilificio per lo stoccaggio dei truciolati. Sisono dovute abbattere le torri originali, cheperò sono state ricostruite con identichecaratteristiche, a testimonianza del passatooperoso della zona. UN MIX DI TRADIZIONE E FUTUROA mix of tradition and future

� LO STUDIO DI ARCHITETTURA NONIS DI MILANO si è occupato dellaprogettazione delle facciate di tutto il Centro Commerciale e degli esterniin generale. L'architetto Fabio Nonis espone le principali scelteprogettuali: "La riqualificazione di un'area industriale dismessa e da annidegradata, con mantenimento dell’immagine delle due torri dell’exmobilificio Rossana, caposaldo ormai consolidato nel paesaggio della zona;l’utilizzo di materiali della tradizione costruttiva lombarda conassemblaggio a secco affiancati a soluzioni tecniche di segnocontemporaneo (le facciate continue in vetro e alluminio con barre LEDper giochi di luce notturni). Ancora, il contenimento dell’impattodell’edificio sull’ambiente attraverso l’adozione della facciata ventilata elo sfruttamento dell’acqua prelevata dalla falda acquifera come fluido discambio termico degli impianti”. L’illuminazione esterna? “C'erano degliimput del committente che intendeva conferire un'immagine urbana allearee a parcheggio: di qui la scelta del palo alto 4 metri in luogo delleclassiche torrifaro e di un corpo illuminante dal design sobrio qual èMontecarlo di Disano ”.

� Nonis Studio, an architecture firm in Milan was responsible fordesigning the outdoors and the parking lots. "We received a number ofinputs from our client that guided some of our planning choices,"explains architect Fabio Nonis, the firm's manager. The redevelopmentof a disused and decayed industrial area, and the preservation of theimage features of two existing towers of the former Rossana furniturefactory, a well-established landmark of the area's skyline; the use ofmaterials from local construction traditions with dry-stacked clay brickscombined with contemporary technical solutions (glass and aluminiumcurtain walls with LED bars for night light effects). Moreover, the needto minimise the building's impact on the environment through theapplication of ventilated façade systems and the collection of water fromground sources to supply water for the heat exchangers”. And outdoorlighting? "We wanted to give an urban and a people-friendly appeal tothe parking areas: this is why we chose 4 metres poles in place of theordinary lighting towers of other parking areas and a illuminating bodyhaving a sober design like the one presented in Disano Montecarlo".

A NEW SHOPPING CENTRE next to the Milano-Venezia motorway tollbooth was inauguratedin spring. Two towers standing out as landmarks, just afew steps away from the Dalmine motorwaytollbooth on the A4 route. An area covering atotal surface of 95,000 sq.m, of which thetotal floor area is 43,981, split on two levelswith shops, 7 large and medium surface units

comprising a hypermarket, other 90 shops, 10restaurant and café units, parking areas andaccessory routes covering 94,000 sq.m. years of bureaucracy and construction worksmade possible thanks to the partnershipestablished between the Gruppo Policentro, aleader in the development and management ofhypermarkets across the country, the estateagency Altarea Italia and the Municipality ofStezzano. But first, some history. The new shoppingcentre was built on a disused commercial area(hosting a furniture factory) that was thesubject of a redevelopment plan conducted bythe Municipality that included the constructionof new commercial areas (with the objective tore-use spaces and create new employmentopportunities) and an overall revision ofexisting roads. Bureaucratic procedures beganin 2006. The project's starting points includedthe preservation of the area's historical assets,with particular reference to two existingtowers that were previously used by the oldfurniture factory as a chipboard warehouse.

Unfortunately, this goal could not beaccomplished, so the two towers, rising 40metres from ground level, were pulled downand completely rebuilt with the same featuresof the original ones as an evidence of thearea's industrious past. The architectural structure and the design ofthis imposing construction were handled byleading design firms. The result was a giganticconstruction complex, which is well-integratedinto the urban context using studied materialsand featuring highly eco-sustainablecharacteristics. The mission of this new-born shopping centre isclear: to unite shopping and leisure, relax andcomfort, and create, in real terms, throughshows and events, a single shopping referencepoint and a place were people can meet, buildsocial relationships and develop a new sense ofcommunity.And now, let's zoom in and explore the lightingsystems installed with the cooperation oflighting agency Disano Lombardia. Products include Montecarlo fixtures installedon 4-metre poles illuminating the outdoors andthe large parking lot, Milano recessed-floodlights in all common areas of the shopgallery in order to create aesthetic and lightinguniformity along the shopping route.

passaggi comuni e Cover Light per la zona dellescale. THE DELTA INFISSI SHOWROOM, the hugelywell-known sales and exhibition centre inTermini Imerese, has recently undergone a fullmakeover. A leader in the furniture, fixturesand fittings industry for over ten years, DeltaInfissi kicked off the project by substantiallyincreasing the floor space from 200 to over 400sq.m. The redesign also led to the reshufflingof sales areas, an increased product offeringand a new lighting system designed to enhancethe exhibition space, individual areas and thevarious companies represented in the set-up tothe best extent possible. Tiziana Milano,daughter of the owner Salvatore Milano,explains: “We opened the new showroom at thebeginning of April. The result is a testament tothe huge effort made by my father and hismany ideas: we wanted to welcome ourcustomers into a friendly and aestheticallypleasing environment and at the same timeoffer them a wider product range. In additionto our core business of window and doorfittings, we are now offering a wide range ofgarden accessories and furniture for outdoorliving”.The project was brought to fruition by a teamof architects; one of them, Danilo LuigiGiaffreda, tells us: “We had the space to startwith since the company had already been herefor many years. We decided to extend itconsiderably, however, and give it a brand newlook, overhauling the interiors and access areasto create expectations and improve theexposure given to guest companies”. Andlighting? “Lighting plays a massive part in thisproject,” continues Giaffreda; “we haveilluminated the passageways and placedparticular emphasis on display stands and walllighting to create the right ambience”. The

lighting fixtures were supplied by the lightingagency Disano Sicilia and installed by a localfirm, Genovese Giuseppe Srl. The productsused include the Arco wall lamp for theemergency entrance; Office 8 general lightingsquares with electronic opal diffuser; theadjustable, 35-watt Eta1 with CDM-TC Elitebulb for the fixture displays; the warm lightDeimos LED for utility rooms and commonpassageways and, lastly, Cover Light for thestairwells.

È aperto da qualche mese nel comunedel Bellunese un nuovo asilo nido dalle importanti prerogativeecocompatibili: bioedilizia, materialinaturali e un pionieristico impianto di geotermia

A few months ago, in this town in theprovince of Belluno, a new nurseryschool was opened. It was built onimportant eco-compatible prerogativessuch as sustainable housing, naturalmaterials and a pioneering geothermalsystem

L’ASPETTO ESTERNO È QUELLO DI UNVILLAGGIO INDIANO, con una piazzettacentrale e un sistema di edifici laterali a formadi capanna, con rivestimenti di legno, pareti evetri multicolore. All’interno caratteristichearchitettoniche d’avanguardia e un sistemaimpiantistico unico in Italia. Si tratta del nuovo asilo nido di Sedico, piccolocentro del Bellunese, il cui destino è da annilegato a doppio filo alla presenza di un grandehub della Luxottica. La realizzazione della struttura, costatasorprendentemente poco (un milione e mezzodi euro o poco meno, in parte investiti dalcolosso dell’occhiale) è frutto di unapartnership fra pubblico e privato (il 30% deiposti del nido è riservata ai figli dei dipendentidello stabilimento) e di una progettazioneintelligente, voluta dall’amministrazionecomunale, da tempo impegnata sul fronte delrisparmio energetico.

La progettazione è stata affidata allo studioMinella di Santa Giustina. “Abbiamo lavoratocon l’obiettivo di realizzare un edificio diverso,che in qualche modo andasse a sollecitare lafantasia dei piccoli utenti – spiega il progettistaMirco Minella – di qui la costruzione a forma divillaggio indiano, come amiamo definirlo: c’èdietro uno studio e la ricerca di un appealparticolare dal punto di vista pedagogico”. Il nido ha 75 posti e una struttura modulare cheapre la via a possibili ampliamenti futuri.

BIOEDILIZIA“Nella progettazione e realizzazione – aggiungeMinella – è stato seguito un percorsointeramente all’insegna della sostenibilità.

Innanzitutto, è stato eseguito il lavoropreliminare di allontanamento dal Radon,purtroppo un problema molto pesante inquest’area. La struttura è in legno lamellarecon rivestimenti naturali. Sono stati inoltreimpiegati intonaci speciali che garantiscono unmassimo livello di abbattimentodell’inquinamento acustico”. Ma l’appeal tecnologico principale dell’edificioriguarda l’impiantistica. L’asilo nido di Sedico èdotato di un sistema di geotermia orizzontalepioniere a livello europeo, che ne garantiscel’autosufficienza energetica. “È stato realizzato – spiega il progettista – unsistema di piccole condutture e pompe: impiegaliquido refrigerante, che garantisce il massimorendimento con il minimo consumo,provvedendo a raffrescamento e riscaldamentoin estate. FROM THE OUTSIDE, THIS ECO-COMPATIBLEnursery looks like an American Indian village,with its central square and a system of sidebuildings in the form of cabins panelled inwood, with multi-coloured walls and windows,and fully sustainable. The new Sedico nursery has avant-gardearchitectural features and a unique system ofinstallations not to be found elsewhere in Italy.Sedico is a small Belluno town, which for yearshas been inextricably linked to a hugeLuxottica hub. The cost of the building was surprisingly low(just under 1,500,000, partly an investment bythe spectacles-manufacturing giant). Thenursery is the result of a public/privatepartnership (30% of the places in the nurseryare reserved for the children of factoryemployees) and of intelligent planningsupported by local administration authorities,which have long been committed to energysaving, as well as the input of a leading designstudio, the Minella firm of Santa Giustina. “We worked with the aim of creating adifferent building, which would somehowstimulate the imagination of the little onesusing it,” explained the designer, MircoMinella, “hence the construction in the form ofan American Indian village, as we like to call it:it is based on research and we sought aparticular appeal from the pedagogical point ofview”. The nursery has 75 places and a modular

“Con questa struttura abbiamo dato una risposta ai cittadini, chehanno bisogno di posti all’asilo nido, ma anche un segnale sul frontedel risparmio, energetico ed economico: in tempi come questi iltaglio dei consumi è, per un amministratore pubblico, oltre che undovere, una vera e propria ansia”. Giovanni Piccoli, ingegnere,sindaco di Sedico, ha seguito l’iter di progettazione e poi direalizzazione del nuovo nido. “Noi avevamo bisogno di un nidounico, che accorpasse strutture preesistenti e insufficienti –racconta – e la Luxottica, che sul nostro comune ha una logistica euno stabilimento produttivo da duemila dipendenti, aveva bisogni diposti nido aziendali. Abbiamo contemperato le esigenze in unaconvenzione di non facile stesura, scelto l’area e dato ai progettisti

degli input precisi. Il risultato ci soddisfa pienamente. Stiamo pensando ad un ulteriorecorredo, un sistema di pannelli fotovoltaici sul tetto, anche se per ora non abbiamodefinito i tempi di questo inetervento”. Un milione e 400 mila euro, un impegnoeconomico consistente ma anche una cifra contenuta. “Abbiamo scelto un’area idoneaper almeno due ragioni. La prima è che era già di nostra proprietà, inoltre era già dotatadi servizi per gli allacciamenti, due elementi importanti per non far lievitare i costi.All’investimento ha partecipato in quota la Luxottica, nostro partner in questaoperazione, che ha seguito anche i lavori cosiddetti al grezzo”.

We blended these requirements into an agreement that was not simple to drawup, and then we selected the area and gave the designers precise inputs. The result ishighly satisfactory. We are thinking about a further facility, i.e. a system of photovoltaicpanels on the roof. We are going ahead with caution, however, since, as we all know,times are hard”. One million four hundred thousand Euros: a financial commitment thatis sizable, but also contained. “We selected a suitable area. First of all, we alreadyowned it and secondly it already had utility connections, those little things that caninflate costs. Luxottica, our partner in this undertaking, contributed their share in theinvestment.”

SUSTAINABLE HOUSING“When working on the design anddevelopment,” continues Minella, “wefollowed a route that was fully based onsustainability. First of all, preliminary workwas carried out on taking distance from theRadon, unhappily a major issue in this area.The structure is in lamellar wood with naturalsurfaces. Special plastering was used also toensure maximum reduction of noise pollution”.But the main appeal of the building concernsits MEP engineering. The Sedico nursery enjoysa horizontal geothermal system, a pioneer atEuropean level, which guarantees self-sufficiency in terms of energy. “A system ofsmall ducts and pumps was created,” explains

the designer. “It uses liquid refrigerants, whichensure maximum yield with minimumconsumption, providing heating and cooling inthe summer. The installation is equipped witha French inline piston system - the advantageof using this technology has already anextensive literature of its own”.

LIGHTINGFew but very rigorous concepts as a basis forthe lighting system set up for the building. Alot of light, but indirect: this is consideredbetter for school settings and is obtainedmainly from wall equipment or “invisible”light sources installed in the lamellarstructure. A LED installation is still beingworked on for the central area. DisanoIlluminazione collaborated in supplying Arco,Meridiana and Vista fixtures.

L’installazione ha voluto ricucire nelsegno della luce livelli di tempo, luoghi esensazioni: “Sulla piazza dei bracieri accesi, asimboleggiare l’operosità, il fuoco, il lavoro –ancora Armenise – e un bianco surreale comesoffitto. Poi luce a valorizzare ogni singoloelemento di design, ed effetti scenici, che nonamo definire solo proiezioni, sulle facciate deipalazzi”. Il progetto realizzato è di Armenise eSilvia Nervi, gli effetti scenici realizzati conUovo Quadrato. La luce è affidata a Venerecon LED a luce bianca. Per le facciateapparecchi Quadro asimmetrico e Rodio a LED,abbinati a Bario e Liset.

Marmotec international fair has set its locationin Carrara's historical centre, Alberica Square,with the splendid façade of its monumentalbuildings and warm evocative atmosphere infront of a wide empty space waiting to befilled with emotions, light and movement. On the broad open space the play of colours,design elements and lighting is used to stressobjects and places, while images and emotionsare displayed on the buildings' walls. A town, aname, pure poetry: "Under the white sky"."Carrara's sky is white for its marble," explainsPaolo Armenise, the project's designer. "Wesimply brighten up the town square and filledit with new emotions, thanks to Veneresuspension lamps, six lighting fixtures that Ilike to see as six moons, exalting the sky's purewhite candour and creating a magicatmosphere". The installation intends to bindtime, place and emotions through light: "Thetown square is dominated by fire-lit braziersthat represent industriousness, fire and workunder the surreal white ceiling" adds Armenise"Light emphasises each single design element,and the stage effects are not just projectionson the building façade." The project was signedby Armenise and Silvia Nervi, visual stageeffects have been designed with UovoQuadrato. Light is given by Venere lamps withwhite light LED bulbs. The building façade isdecorated by asymmetric Quadro fixtures andLED-powered Rodio projectors combined withBario and Liset products.

The monastery, whichdates back to the 6th century, is located at themouth of a rough and inaccessible canyon. Themonument is dedicated to Saint Catherine ofAlexandria and is the most ancient existingChristian monastery in the world. It wasincluded in the list of Unesco's world heritagesites in 2002 for its valuable Byzantinearchitecture and for the religious importanceto Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. Themonastery hosts a vast collection of ancientmanuscripts and religious icons, and has thelargest library of Byzantine texts in the worldafter the Vatican library. From the holy atmospheres of St. Catherine'smonastery, visitors pass to the splendour ofTaba, the city of the Gulf of Aquaba facingsandy beaches of bright-coloured corals andfish. Then there is Nabq with its whimsicalsea, the transparent waters of Shark Bay,Sharm's marine beauty known as the "Pharaohs'aquarium". This section is perhaps the mostbreathtaking moment of the journey: visitorsfeel like they are walking underwatersurrounded by a multi-coloured environmentfeaturing its blaze of joyful coral reefs, seaflowers and exotic fish of many differentshapes and colours.

L’edificio si trova a un centinaiodi metri dalla piazza principale della capitalecroata, il nuovo centro danza comprende trestudi, uno grande che può ospitare 150spettatori e due più piccoli per le prove, oltre acamerini, uffici e magazzini. Inoltre è stataaggiunta una lobby d’ingresso con caffè libreriae video.La progettazione è firmata da 3LHD d.o.o.,Tatjana Grozdaniç Begoviç, Jasminka Jug, ilprogetto elettrico è di Radovan Tomsic, RPStudio d.o.o., Lighting Design e installazionisono a cura di Telektra. Lighting Design. Lighting installations weresupplied by Telektra. Lighting fixtures include Lithium luminaires withcolour-changing LED lights. The changes in colour outside enhance theexternal appeal of the building. From theatmospheric colours of the outside, we move onto the inside spaces, where the light insinuatesand shapes the different rooms: a gentler light inthe entrance areas, diffused light in those of theschool, predominantly white, where thearchitecture and design are based on clear, cleanlines and the artificial lighting is at the serviceof the technical requirements of the studio.

MARINA HRAMINA È UN MODERNO e ben attrezzato porto turisticosull’isola di Murter, nella Dalmazia centrale. Per la buona posizione,all’ingresso del parco Nazionale delle isole Kornati, l’isola è il puntodi partenza o uno scalo ideale per crociere ed escursioninell’Adriatico. Recentemente sono stati portati a termine i lavori di illuminazione del lungomare e di diversi edifici del porto. Per l’illuminazione esterna, funzionale e decorativa, sono statiutilizzati apparecchi Clima e Minifloor della Disano. Il progettoelettrico è firmato da Dubravko Vlasic di Ipz-Spelproject d.o.o.,Lighting Design e Lighting Solution a cura di Telektra D.o.o.

Marina Hramina is a modern and well-equipped yacht marinalocated on the island of Murter, in central Dalmatia. Thanks to itsstrategic position near the Kornati National Park, it is the perfectdeparture and arrival point for sailing cruises along the Adriaticcoastline. Recent works included the installation of new lightingsystems along the seaside and in several buildings. Outdoor lighting, suited to meet both functional and decorativeneeds, include Clima and Minifloor fixtures by Disano. The electriclights were designed by Dubravko Vlasic of Ipz-Spelproject d.o.o.,while the lighting design and lighting solution were signed by Telektra D.o.o.

IL PROGETTO DELLA NUOVA SEDEdell’“Agencija za provredne register” (Agenziadel Registro delle imprese serbe) a Belgrado èstato particolarmente impegnativo per diversimotivi. La sede è collocata in uno dei piùvecchi edifici commerciali di Belgrado,risalente al 1939, mentre l’APR è una delleistituzioni statali più giovani della Serbia,fondata solo cinque anni fa. La recessioneeconomica e i tagli di budget nell’investimentohanno prolungato i lavori di ristrutturazione.Tutto questo, associato all’importanza vitaledell’istituzione per l’economia serba (gestisce

quasi tutte le società nel paese, dalle piùgrandi a quelle più piccole: un ruolo in cui lafluidità e la trasparenza sono estremamenteimportanti), ha richiesto un notevole impegnoper gli architetti e designer di interni MarkoMacura e Goran Govedarica dello StudioMembrane. In collaborazione con il team diprofessionisti Buck e con Ljiljana Zivanovic,ingegnere specializzato in installazionielettriche, sono state soddisfatte tutte leesigenze di illuminazione. L’idea degli architettiera quella di contrastare gli abituali colori delleagenzie governative (beige, arancio-albicocca) ��

e sostituirli con decori di interni e elementiilluminotecnici di colore bianco luminoso,evocando anche nella scelta degli apparecchifluorescenti dell’area desk trasparenza efiducia. Le superfici circostanti sono luminoseed estremamente riflettenti, per consentirerisparmio energetico.Vediamo nel dettaglio gli apparecchi scelti.L’ingresso principale è stato illuminato edecorato con Minilinea A da 28 watt, il cuiposizionamento irregolare e non lineare hainterrotto la monotonia del grande spazio dellalobby, offrendo un’impressione dello spaziocontinuamente differente e accentuandone ledinamiche. Lo stesso articolo è stato utilizzatoper l’illuminazione di alcuni uffici, mentre peraltri sono stati scelti apparecchi decorativi ailluminazione alogena come Janus da 50 watt,abbinati a Minilinea B da 28 watt.

Per i corridoi curvi sono stati scelti diversi tipidi illuminazione: una generale, una secondarappresentata da una parete decorativa conapparecchi Alicia da 26 watt e da una versionespeciale degli apparecchi Minilinea, mentrenella terza viene posto l’accento sulla lucemediante l’apparecchio Luthor da 35 watt. La progettazione è stata ridefinita diversevolte, così come l’illuminazione, per giungerealla fine alla soluzione illuminotecnica piùeconomica e in grado di assicurare il massimorisparmio energetico: dove possibile sono statiutilizzati sistemi a incasso, con impianti dibuilding automation che consentono il controlloin base alla luce diurna e la regolazione degliscenari luminosi secondo i differenti orarilavorativi.

investment which prolonged the works, and thefact that the APR is one of the youngest stateinstitutions in Serbia, with only five years ofexistence. All this combined with theinstitution’s vital importance for Serbianeconomy (this is the institution that deals withalmost all the companies in the country, big orsmall ones, where fluidness and transparencyare of great importance) gave the architectsand interior designers Mr Marko Macura andMr Goran Govedarica of the Studio Membranea very complex assignment.In coordination with the BUCK professionalteam and Mrs Ljiljana Zivanovic, electricalinstallation engineer, all the lightingrequirements were met. The architects had theidea to contrast the usual colors of thegovernment agencies (beige, apricot-orange)and substitute those with the bright whiteinterior decoration and illumination, evokingtransparency and confidence with the choice offluorescent fittings in the active desk area.The surrounding surfaces were bright and witha high degree of reflection, enabling significantenergy savings. This was the choice of the

chosen articles: The main entrance hall wasilluminated and decorated using Minilinea A28W lighting fittings, whose irregular and non-linear positioning broke the monotony of thebig lobby space, giving an always differentimpression of the space, accenting its’dynamics. The same article was used also forthe illumination of some offices, while otherswere illuminated with decorative Janus 50Whalogen fittings, in combination with MinilineaB 28W. The curved halls have several types ofillumination: one is general, another isdecorative wall with Alicia 26W and specialversion of Minilinea, the third is accent lightobtained by Luthor 35W. The project assignment was redefined severaltimes, and so was the illumination, coming atthe end to the most economic and energysaving lighting solution: dimmable gear wasused where possible, with Buildingmanagement system, enabling daylightdepending control and regulation of lightscenes in different working hours.

A NEW RAILWAY STATION RUNNING alongAndalusia's torrid coastline was recently builtat San Fernando, a charming town of nearlyone hundred thousand residents situatedbetween Cadiz and Jerèz de la Frontera,renamed "La Isla" (the Island) by the locals. The San Fernando central station wasinaugurated a few months ago and will replacea temporary stop that will remain availablethroughout the entire period of works andwhich represents an important rail link in aparticularly beautiful and strategic line of theso-called "Costa della Luz" on Spain's southerncoast. Thanks to the new San Fernando station, knownfor its imposing architectural constructions, itsbaroque lines and amazing landscapes, it willnow feature two stops on the C2 railway line.

THE RAIL PROJECT'S FEATURES The new San Fernando station consists of twolevels; it is fully compatible with disabledpassengers' needs and features the mostmodern equipment. Passengers will enter thestation from the upper level, where a large"piazza", a public area covering over 300 squaremeters, will include shops, ticket desks andtoilets, thereby integrating itself and ��

connecting with the surrounding urban context.The lower level is used to access the platformsthat present an architectural constructioncharacterised by bright, airy and clear spaces.The railway station is intended to integrateinto a larger high speed rail system connectingSeville to Cadiz where works, that lay out overmany miles, include a total revision of stations,removal of footpath level crossings, significantchanges to equipment and electrical systemsand creation of railway cuttings to assure animproved environmental protection.

LIGHTING PROJECTStation entrances are illuminated byMontecarlo fixtures with 150-watt metalhalide lamps. Suspension lamps are alsoMontecarlo-type with symmetrical opticalsystems and 150-watt Cdm-Ts lamps for theescalator and the main hall. The developer is ADIF (Administrador deInfrastructures Ferroviaries) while EduardoArpirez of Illuminaciòn Disano designed thelighting system, installed by Inelta.

Le dimensioni e le caratteristiche tecniche dei LEDconsentono un nuovo approccio al design degli appa-recchi come forme e dimensioni. Il che significa chevedremo prodotti completamente diversi? Non èdetto: la nuova tecnologia è inseribile anche in appa-recchi dalle forme più tradizionali.

The sizes and the technical characteristics of LEDs enable anew approach toward the design of fixtures in terms of sha-pes and dimensions. Does this mean that lighting fixtures willchange drastically? Maybe not, as this new technology can befitted even into more traditionally-shaped fixtures.

� In his professional capacity as architect and designer,Alessandro Pedretti has covered all aspects of the lightingindustry, from designing fixtures to interior and urban planning.A Studio Rota & Partners associate since 1998, Pedretti hasworked on a number of highly prestigious architectural andinterior design projects. He has been collaborating with Disano e Fosnova since2002 on the development of architectural lighting installationproducts for both public and private commissions. We askedhim whether - and how - LED light sources are changing theface of light fixture design.

Alessandro Pedretti The use of LEDs is creating new bench-marks in light fixture development. With this particular lightsource, it's not just a question of size; more than anything,it’s about a whole new potential in the way we generateand “extract” light. Nowadays we’re required to usedevices that are much more sophisticated than those normal-ly used in the design of traditional products. The situation isnot unlike 150 years ago, when we made the transition fromcandles to coal lamps. The LED light source is an integral part and parcel of fixturedesign, as are its “vital” necessities: heat dissipation, optimaldistribution of light diffusion and the benefit-cost ratio.Nowadays, the push towards innovative products is beingdriven by the widespread expectation that we must use less inour production processes in order to consume less. Looking atit from this perspective, the LED technology has the natural abil-ity to portray itself as a symbol of eco-friendliness and energy-

For the first time in the existence of light sources, we arefaced with an entirely new idea: since their very creation,new and diverse light sources have gradually been emerg-ing, dramatically increasing their scope. What’s happeningtoday is the opposite phenomenon: the shift toward a cho-sen few performing light sources will open up unexpecteddesign and application opportunities. I am positive that the LED will make its big break into all areasof lighting, from public to private domestic lighting. Muchremains to be done, however, to make light that is suited notjust to our functional needs, but to our perceptual needs.

LM Di LED si parla molto, ma chi deve investire in un nuovoimpianto luci ha informazioni sufficienti per scegliere tra i LEDe le altre opzioni?Di Sano Questo è proprio uno degli aspetti in cui c’è più dalavorare. Esistono infatti specifiche tecniche che riguardano iLED ma per quanto riguarda gli apparecchi che li montanovanno ancora messi a punto parametri standard a cui tuutipossano riferirsi. LEDs in particular because they promise solid advantages interms of energy savings and light quality.We must be careful, however, not to disappoint these expec-tations. Because, you see, at this stage we risk generating acertain degree of confusion on the LED lighting fixtures market:LEDs are the product of the electronics industry and we havecompanies within this same sector producing lighting equip-ment. I personally think that, in certain areas – public lighting,for example – you cannot deliver a good product withouthaving the necessary know-how.

LM So, in practice, a good lighting fixture requires more thanjust LED…Di Sano As with other light sources, LEDs are inserted into devi-ces that have the necessary operating conditions to guaranteeoptimum performance; as such, we also have the optics, mate-rials and design coming into play. These are all areas in whichthe manufacturer should have specific experience; companieswho only manufacture LEDs, however, are unlikely to havesuch a background.The point is to not to be too influenced by the “in” thing, whichseems to be suggesting LEDs as the optimal solution for everysituation. The truth is that, at present, there are many situationswhere the best lighting solution is something altogether diffe-rent.

LM There is a lot of talk about LEDs, but do people who needto invest in new lighting systems have enough information attheir disposal to choose between LEDs and the alternativeoptions?Di Sano Indeed, this is one of the areas we still need to workon. We do have specific techniques for LED applications but,in terms of the devices that install LEDs, we have yet to deve-lop standard parameters that we can all refer to. This is some-thing that companies and associations are working on, butthere is still a long way to go. We need to remember that,because we are still an emerging industry, we don't havemany field tests available to us.

Lighting Magazine Pensate che i LED possano dare uncontributo alla riduzione dell'inquinamento luminoso?Fabio Falchi Con i LED e gli apparecchi a LED cheabbiamo visto finora l’inquinamento luminoso tenderàad aumentare. Il problema principale è che i LED chevengono installati attualmente hanno una forte emissio-ne nella parte blu dello spettro, quella che è diffusamaggiormente dall’atmosfera, quella che attrae mag-giormente gli insetti, che viene diffusa maggiormentenel cristallino delle persone anziane (anche i guidato-ri!), quella che inibisce la produzione notturna dellamelatonina. Le lampade al sodio, al contrario, hannoemissioni nel blu molto limitate e per questo il loro spet-tro è molto meno inquinante. Un passo fondamentaleche dovranno fare i produttori di LED sarà quello dilimitare fortemente le emissioni nel blu, quindi. Sul lungo termine i LED, una volta che avranno unospettro più ecocompatibile, offriranno notevoli vantag-gi. Il principale dei quali è la possibilità di regolare illoro flusso e la possibilità di accensione immediata.

LM Quali sono secondo voi i criteri fondamentali perun’illuminazione più rispettosa dell’ambiente? Falchi I criteri seguono la logica dell’illuminare solodove, quando e come strettamente necessario. La vitasulla Terra si è evoluta con l’alternarsi del dì e dellanotte. Oggi stiamo trasformando il nostro ambiente inmodo da avere un dì lungo 24 ore. Le conseguenze diquesto stravolgimento non possono essere lievi.

LM Pensate che in Italia si stia sviluppando una mag-giore sensibilità per la qualità dell'illuminazione?Falchi Sicuramente, soprattutto dal 2000, anno in cuivennero approvate numerose leggi contro l’inquina-mento luminoso, molte cose sono migliorate. Oggi laprogettazione illuminotecnica di un impianto è obbli-gatoria in molte regioni. Gli apparecchi di illuminazione sono diventati, inmedia molto meno inquinanti. Fanno eccezione, pur-troppo, alcuni apparecchi a vela o riflessione chehanno rendimenti ridicoli, anche inferiori al 30%.Bisogna però fare molta attenzione anche ai progettidi illuminazione, specialmente quando sono coinvoltielementi importanti del paesaggio.

� Cielo Buio is a cultural association, which bringstogether professionals and enthusiastic amateurs forstar-gazing. Its main purpose is to battle the phenome-non of light pollution, i.e. the dispersion of lightupwards, preventing any vision of the night sky. Weasked the President, Fabio Falchi, a few questions.

Lighting Magazine Do you think LEDs can make acontribution to reduce light pollution?Fabio Falchi With LEDs and LED fixtures we have seenup to now that light pollution tends to increase. Themain problem is that the LEDs currently being installedhave a strong emission in the blue part of the spec-trum, the one that is most greatly diffused by the atmo-sphere, the one that attracts the most insects, the onethat is diffused mainly in the crystalline of elderly peo-ple (and in drivers!), the one that inhibits the night-time production of melatonin. Sodium lamps, on theother hand, have very limited emissions into blue andfor this reason their spectrum is much less polluting. Abasic step that LED manufacturers will necessarily haveto make, therefore, will be rigorously to limit emissionsin the blue portion of the spectrum.Over the long term, once LEDs have a more eco-com-patible spectrum, they will offer considerable advanta-ges. The chief of these is the possibility of regulatingtheir flow and also the immediate lighting up.

LM In your opinion, what are the basic criteria for publiclighting that is more respectful of the environment?Falchi The criteria follow the logic of lighting up onlyas and when strictly necessary. We are now transfor-ming our environment in such a way as to have a daythat is 24 hours long. The consequences of this tran-sformation cannot be insignificant.

LM Do you think that in Italy greater awareness isdeveloping as regards the quality of lighting? Falchi Certainly, especially since 2000, when a numberof laws against light pollution were passed, manyaspects have improved. Nowadays the lighting design ofan installation is obligatory in many regions. Lightingequipment, on average, has become less polluting.Exceptions to this are some sail or reflection fixtures,which have ridiculous yields, even less than 30%.

The labs for the study of light and colour (Laboratori Luce & Colore) at the Indaco department of thePolitecnico university in Milan, which were set up in the 90s by Prof. Alberto Seassaro, Dean of theuniversity's faculty of Design, are a training and research facility entirely dedicated to the study of lightand colour; the labs have been operating successfully for almost ten years. The research and trainingactivities are carried out with the cooperation of university professors such as Alberto Seassaro himselfwho provides scientific direction to a staff of professors, including Maurizio Rossi, Mario Bisson, GianniForcolini and Francesco Murano, as well as graduated engineers with a consolidated experience such asAndrea Siniscalco, Fulvio Musante and Cristina Boeri. Lighting Magazine Quali sono, allo stato attuale, i piùimportanti vantaggi offerti dai LED?Rossi L’utilizzo dei LED può offrire vantaggi diversi sia nell’il-luminazione d’interni che all’esterno. I LED possono consentire un controllo più efficiente e imme-diato del flusso luminoso, e offrono anche una durata mag-giore rispetto alle altre sorgenti, ma solo se il prodotto cheutilizza i LED è ben progettato dal punto di vista termico.Sono molto importanti anche gli aspetti legati alla tempera-tura di colore e al colore. Con i LED c’è la possibilità di otte-nere luci colorate senza impiego di filtri e si possono pro-grammare miscele di colori, per ottenere luce bianca odiverse sfumature di colore.Nell’illuminazione esterna con i LED si può avere una mag-giore durata dei prodotti e un significativo risparmio energe-tico, per la maggiore efficienza e per le possibilità di con- ��

trollo del flusso luminoso. Inoltre, c’è anche un miglioramen-to della qualità della luce, con l’emissione di luce biancache migliora la visibilità. Un apparecchio ben progettatopuò consentire anche un maggior controllo della distribuzio-ne delle intensità luminose. Tutti elementi importanti per l’illu-minazione stradale.Ci sono però alcuni aspetti su cui c’è ancora da lavorare.Occorre una definizione più precisa delle effettive perfor-mance dei prodotti e la messa a punto di strumenti e para-metri di misurazione standard, un tema a cui stanno lavoran-do diversi organismi internazionali.

LM Per utilizzare correttamente i LED nel progetto di lucequali sono le competenze necessarie?Rossi Innanzitutto è necessaria la conoscenza degli aspettitermici ed elettrici dei LED, per capire quali sono i limiti tec-nici del loro utilizzo. Ma ci sono anche nuovi aspetti moltointeressanti. In un progetto di luce con luce variabile dinami-camente si possono prendere in considerazione anche glieffetti fisiologici e psicologici della variazione in quantità e

composizione spettrale della luce sul benessere psicofisico.Ci sono studi importanti che dimostrano l’influsso della lucesia su fattori fisici, come per esempio i ritmi circadiani, siasul tono dell’umore. Il LED offre nuove possibilità per rispon-dere a queste esigenze e offre anche nuove possibilità crea-tive di uso del colore per i lighting designer.

In alighting project with a dynamically variable light, we cantake into consideration the physiological and psychologicalimpact of the variation of the quantity and of the spectralcomposition of light on a person's psychophysical health. Major studies have proven that light may have a significantinfluence on several physical factors, such as, for instance,circadian rhythms and mood. In this regard, LED technologyoffers new possibilities and provides lighting designers withnew creative colour possibilities.

Maurizio Rossi In the last few years we conducted numerousresearches on LED and we tested LED sources of many diffe-rent fixtures featuring this type of light source. In fact, there is significant progress, both in the LED techno-logy, that is becoming increasingly more performing and inthe lighting fixtures that are re-designed to maximise the cha-racteristics of this light source. To this regard, the studies conducted by Gianni Forcolini onthe applications of these new light sources are very intere-sting and have culminated in his book about LED lightingtechnology called "Illuminazione LED" published by Hoepli.

Lighting Magazine. What are the major advantages of LEDin the current state of affairs?Rossi Using Led lights can offer several advantages both forindoor and outdoor lighting. LED bulbs may enable a moreefficient and immediate light flow, and also have a longerlife compared to other light sources, but only if the productusing LED is well-designed from the thermal point of view. The issues related to colour temperature and colour areequally important. With LED bulbs we can obtain colouredlights without using filters and we can program colour mixtu-res to obtain either white light or different shades of colour.Using LED for outdoor lighting can extend the life of lightingproducts and obtain significant energy savings to optimise effi-ciency and to improve light flow control. Moreover, LED alsoimproves the quality of light thanks to a pleasant white lightthat increases visibility. A well-designed lighting fixture canalso enhance the control of light brightness distribution. Theseelements are particularly essential for public road lighting.However, there are still some issues that need to be furtherdeveloped. What is really needed is a more accurate defi-nition of the product's actual performance and the implemen-tation of standard measuring devices and parameters, amajor issue which is currently being dealt with by severalinternational bodies.

LM Which skills are required to properly use LED in a lightingdesign project?Rossi First of all, it is necessary to understand the thermal

Lighting Magazine Con la disponibilità di questa nuova tec-nologia come cambia il ruolo del lighting designer?Rossi Sicuramente la diffusione dei LED rende ancora piùimportante la nostra presenza nei progetti di luce. In questafase la conoscenza dei LED si può definire “asimmetrica”,ossia da una parte abbiamo gli specialisti con una conoscen-za approfondita di questa sorgente e dall’altra i committenti oanche i progettisti che quasi sempre hanno una conoscenzatroppo scarsa di questa tecnologia. Giacomo Rossi In the last decade, LED technology has esta-blished itself within the lighting sector bringing major changesthat are likely to affect the work of lighting designers. Thetechnology's basic characteristics, i.e. higher light efficiencyand a longer life-cycle, make it the light source of the future.At the moment, however, a solution has yet to be found tosolve all the problems regarding light quality and especiallycosts that are still too high to allow for the massive expansionof this technology.

At this stage, theknowledge of LEDs can be considered as an “asymmetric”one, i.e. on the one hand there are specialists with a profoundknowledge of this light source; on the other, there are clientsor even designers who almost always have little knowledge ofthe technology. Lighting designers can act as mediators tran-slating technical data into practical notions that can be easilyunderstood even by the ones who are called to decide whe-ther to use LEDs in a lighting project or not and how.

LM Are LEDs going to change how colours are used in lightingprojects?Rossi In Italy, unlike in other European countries, there hasalways been an instinctive distrust in using colours for outdoorlighting. In matters of aesthetic taste and owing to the charac-teristics of our historical and architectural heritage, Italian desi-gners have always been reluctant to use coloured lights.Through the LED technology coloured beams of light can becontrolled and programmed so that, for instance, lights can beturned on only during particular events. This will definitelyencourage an increased use of colours even in our own townsand cities.

LM LED technology is gaining a certain degree of popularityin terms of image even in mainstream press that is not specia-lised in the lighting sector. Do you believe that this will helpencourage a lighting culture?Rossi As a lighting designer and an owner of a blog aboutlighting I can only be happy that more and more people aretalking about light. However we need to be careful aboutinaccurate information, even when it is deliberately releasedby the press that is unable to filter all the information theyreceive.It is important that what is said about LEDs and lighting ingeneral is always technically and ethically correct. The reasonfor this is that the end-user of any lighting system should beable to make better judgments and decisions about the rightproduct to use.

� Art and monuments: another sector where LED technologycan provide major benefits. Experimentation has been alreadyinitiated and early results are good. LED serves as a lightsource that guarantees extraordinary performance and, aboveall, it ensures the highest level of quality with respect to thematerials constituting the artworks and the architectural contextof museums, archaeological sites and places of historical inter-est. “LED technology,“ explains Diego Ambrosi of Disano “definite-ly guarantees a better preservation of perishable materials,frescoes or oil paintings”. It should be noted that lighting insensitive contexts may cause irreversible damages to theexposed artworks including colour alteration, loss of materialconsistency, and dangerous surface heating. LED bulbs do notproduce ultraviolet rays, thereby ensuring harmless lightingeffects. “There are other factors that make this technology highly rec-ommended for artistic and architectural sites. First of all, LEDtechnology is flexible and enables designers to create irides-cent illuminating sceneries. Moreover it provides an aestheticadvantage for the lighting system itself: LED bulbs can be eas-ily 'hidden' into the fixture and are less intrusive than tradition-al luminaires. Without mentioning the practical benefits fromthe maintenance point of view: LED requires less maintenancewithout ever altering the place’s setting. This is a particularlyvaluable factor for an art gallery or for the cabinets of a muse-um”. Only pros? And what about the cons? “LED technologyalso includes a number of disadvantages, for example, we stillneed to work on colour performance. It is commonly known

that LED light does not emphasize the quality of colour asmuch as incandescent sources do. This is the reason why fix-tures with the highest level of performance are required”. Butthis solution may be expensive. “Italy is a country that is literal-ly filled with art masterpieces and it is not a surprise that fundsare never enough to enhance and protect all of them,” addsDiego Mantovani of Disano. “The many different types of bod-ies involved and the overlap and conflict of competences andresponsibilities do the rest: we invest less in everything, and fornow, LED remains a burdensome investment”.

The new LEDsystem, which will integrate the street lighting network, willdefine an optical line to put the spotlight on a specific area,attracting visitors and guiding them along the way. Moreo-ver, the use of colour, that can be programmed and mana-ged in different software modes, will create amazing scene-ries during celebrations or special events. The entire systemis manufactured with small recessed spotlights, which do notinterfere with the surrounding landscape while significantlyreducing energy consumption.

� Alla base del nuovo impianto luci scenografico cheabbiamo realizzato a Racconigi c’è un progetto diriqualificazione urbanistica in cui la luce gioca un ruolofondamentale. A Racconigi sorge un’importante Reggiasabauda che è stata anche l’ultima residenza del Red’Italia. Si tratta di una meta turistica visitata da centinaiadi migliaia di persone ogni anno. Il Comune si è postol’obiettivo di intervenire per valorizzare anche il centrostorico del paese, costituito dal borgo antico, sorto aridosso del Castello. Si tratta di un progetto iniziato nel2001 e che prevede una serie di interventi sulla viabilità, ilrecupero di edifici storici, la realizzazione di parcheggi, diarredo urbano e di un impianto luci scenografico. Ilprogetto non è concluso. La prossima tappa sarà la nuovasistemazione del grande piazzale antistante la Reggia.Entrando nel merito del progetto di luce va detto che l’ideadi partenza era quella di realizzare due livelli diilluminazione, uno di luci “passo passo” per creare unpercorso in tutto il centro storico, il secondo di luci con ilcambio colore, per valorizzare alcune strutturearchitettoniche. Ci siamo posti da subito l’obiettivo di realizzare unintervento non troppo invasivo, che non andasse astravolgere l’aspetto dei luoghi. Abbiamo quindi optato peruna sola linea di illuminazione, grazie anche a unasoluzione tecnica offerta dalla Disano, che ci ha fornitoalcuni apparecchi che hanno corpi illuminanti in grado digenerare sia la luce bianca, sia il colore RGB. Tuttol’impianto è realizzato con faretti da incasso di dimensioniridotte, che si sono inseriti perfettamente nellapavimentazione esistente e di giorno sono quasi invisibili.L’impianto luci, che si affianca all’illuminazione pubblica,consiste in un percorso a luce bianca con luci “passopasso” disposte in tutta l’area del centro storico e luci conla possibilità del cambio colore collocate lungo il porticatoche perimetra la piazza centrale. Si tratta di piazza VittorioEmanuele II, che i racconigesi chiamano “piazza degliuomini”, perché era il luogo di ritrovo riservato agli uomininei giorni di festa. In questa area di particolare importanzaè possibile attivare le scenografie del cambio colore.Abbiamo scelto comunque di limitare l’uso del colore a“pennellate” sui portici, proprio per non alterare troppol’aspetto della piazza.Il colore si può utilizzare con 12 diverse programmazionigià impostate dal computer. Ordinariamente utilizziamo laluce bianca nei giorni feriali e il colore nel week end, conla possibilità di scelte particolari in occasioni di feste,manifestazioni, ricorrenze.È importante sottolineare che sono state installate linee dialimentazione indipendenti dall’illuminazione pubblica, inmodo tale che si può anche spegnere l’illuminazionegenerale e usare solo quella scenografica. Inoltre abbiamo installato nuovi fari a LED anche perl’illuminazione delle facciate di quattro chiese presentinell’area.

Dal punto di vista tecnologico l’impianto è complesso,possiamo dire unico per certe caratteristiche, per esempiola lunghezza delle linee dei LED e la presenza incontemporanea di luce bianca e colore. Non ci siamo basati su qualcosa di già realizzato,abbiamo sperimentato con l’aiuto dei tecnici della Disanoqualcosa di nuovo e perciò ci siamo assunti anche deirischi, ma il risultato ci ha dato ragione.

Un dato molto rilevante riguarda i bassi consumidell’impianto. Le luci infatti sono alimentate da LED a 24 e48 volt. Per rendere l’idea possiamo dire che tuttol’impianto consuma come 3 o 4 lampioni dell’illuminazionestradale. Inoltre, cambiando l’illuminazione delle facciatedelle chiese e utilizzando proiettori a LED abbiamorisparmiato circa 1000 W.Ma, al di là degli aspetti tecnici, direi che la soddisfazioneprincipale è quella di aver centrato l’obiettivo, regalandouna nuova vita serale al borgo e rendendolo partecipe deifasti della Reggia.

� The new stage lighting system installed in the town ofRacconigi is part of an urban redevelopment project wherelight plays a fundamental role. In the northern town ofRacconigi (Piedmont) rises a monumental Castle, which wasalso the last residence of the Royal House of Savoy. Todayit is one of the favourite destinations for hundreds ofthousands of tourists every year. The objective set by theTown’s administration was to improve the historical centre ofRacconigi developed from the old village that grew aroundthe Castle. Works started in 2001 and included a numberof projects regarding the improvement of the urban roadnetwork, the redevelopment of historical buildings, thecreation of parking lots, and the installation of public fixturesand stage lighting systems. Works are ongoing, but the nextphase is the improvement of the large public square in frontof the Castle.Originally, the lighting project included the creation of twoillumination levels, a step-dimming system to build a lightline defining an optical path across the historical centre anda colour-changing system to highlight some of the town’sarchitectural constructions. Our primary objective was to build installations that werenot excessively intrusive and that would not completelychange the original appearance of places. This is why wedecided to use only one lighting product line, also thanks tothe technical solution provided by Disano, which suppliedsome of the luminaires featuring lighting bodies that cangenerate both white and RGB light. The entire system ismade up of small recessed spotlights, which are perfectlyincorporated into the existing flooring and that arepractically invisible by day.The new stage lighting system, which will integrate theexisting public lights, consists in an optical path created bystep-dimmers arranged across the entire historical centreand by a set of colour-changing lights installed along the

walkway under the portico that encircles the central townsquare, i.e. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II known by the localsas "piazza degli uomini", (the men’s square) because it wasthe place where men would gather during the festivities. Inthis central area, colour-changing lights can be installed tocreate spectacular effects. We decided to limit the use ofcolour by displaying simple "strokes" of colour on theportico in order to prevent the new installations from alteringthe town square’s original appearance.Colour can be changed using 12 different pre-set computer-based programmes. White lights will be used on workingdays and coloured lights during the weekend, while specialsolutions can be implemented on holidays, special eventsand anniversaries. Another key factor is the installation ofpower lines that are totally independent from the publiclighting system, so that the general lighting can be switchedoff while the stage lights can stay on. Moreover we havealso installed new LED spotlights for the façade of four

churches present in the area. From the technologicalperspective the system is a sophisticated and complex oneand sometimes even unique, such as, for example thelength of the LED lines and the coexistence of both whiteand colour lights. We decided not to start from existingsolutions, but we have experimented totally new onesthanks to the assistance of Disano technicians. Together wetook some risks, but the results were completely worth it.One significant element is the system’s reduced energyconsumption. In fact lights are powered by 24 and 40 VoltLEDs. In other words, the entire system consumes like 3 or 4road lighting columns. Moreover, by changing the lightingof the churches’ façade and using LED projectors wemanaged to save almost 1000 W.However, beyond the technical features, I would say thatour greatest success was to have achieved our primaryobjective, i.e. to bring new life to the town’s centre andmaking it part of the splendour of its Royal Castle.

IlCastello e il grande parco retrostante,acquisiti dallo Stato italiano negli anniottanta, sono stati recuperati per offrire aivisitatori un Museo-Residenza in cui si può

avere un saggio della vita di corte, godere delle bellezze naturali del Parco e anche fruire di mostre e spettacoli,tra i quali spicca anche un’importante stagione operistica curata dal Teatro Regio di Torino.

Inquesto senso la nuova illuminazione non solo indicapercorsi da seguire, ma crea anche una nuova atmosferaserale che sottolinea l’identità di tutta la zona.L’uso delle tecnologie più avanzate, come l’illuminazione aLED, ci ha quindi permesso di riqualificare un patrimoniourbanistico che appartiene alla storia della città. Da notareche il centro di Racconigi storicamente era un borgopopolare e non ha al suo interno palazzi di particolarevalore architettonico. Il valore è dato dall’insieme delnucleo urbano ed è proprio quello che la nuovailluminazione mette in luce.Abbiamo avuto reazioni molto positive da parte degliabitanti e dei commercianti della zona, anche perchésiamo riusciti a migliorare la qualità urbana, senzaalterare troppo il volto antico di questi luoghi. Oggicommercianti e cittadini dispongono di un borgo piùaccogliente nelle ore serali e anche di nuove avvincentiscenografie per le serate di festa e gli appuntamentiimportanti, come le serate di spettacolo alla Reggia o ifestival gastronomici dedicati ai nostri meravigliosi prodottilocali.

� The new lighting system developed for the townRacconigi was partly funded by the region of Piedmontwithin a master urban project to bring new value tocommerce and trade in city centres. The project alsoincluded the implementation of several works in a numberof towns throughout the region as they see commerce,which is traditionally more active in a city’s historicalcentre, is an important element to attract tourists andinvestments in general.The experience of other European countries prove that theareas near historical and artistic hotspots need to providea qualified offer of shops, bars, restaurants andrecreational areas that can express and highlight a place’sidentity.In the case of Racconigi the need was to make the centremore attractive for almost 230,000 visitors who come fromall over the world every year to visit the Castle ofRacconigi. To this regard the new lighting system not onlyleads visitors along the paths to follow, but also creates anew evening atmosphere that highlights the identity of theentire area.The use of advanced technology, such as LED lighting, hasallowed us to re-discover an urban heritage that belongs to

the city. It is worth mentioning that the Racconigi’s centrehas an important historical past but does not featurebuildings of particular architectural value. The town’s valueis represented by its urban centre, which is exactly whatthe new lighting system intends to highlight.We received positive feedback from residents and shopowners, also because we managed to improve the qualityof urban life without excessively changing the traditionalimage of these places. Shop owners and residents cannow work and live in a more pleasant town in the eveningand enjoy new and more entertaining stage lights duringfestivities and important events, such as the shows that areregularly held at the Castle or the food festivals dedicatedto local gastronomic delights.

bellezze. Per artisti e disegnatori di luce l’occasione di sperimentare nuove

tecnologie, con le vie e le piazze a fare da scenario per suggestive rappresen-

tazioni. Ecco alcuni degli appuntamenti più importanti in Italia e in Europa

virtuale attraverso le feste della luce porta dalla romanticaFrancia alla trasgressiva Olanda, dalle grandi città industria-li della Germania sino a Milano capitale del design, allamaestosa Torino, a Bergamo e Bologna, dove la luce nonsolo esalta piazze e strade, ma va alla ricerca dell’animanascosta di città e centri storici.

LIONE, FIACCOLE E LEGGENDA

Quattro notti sotto il segno della luce, circa 4 milioni di visi-tatori, di visitatori ogni anno: la Fete de lumieres ha una tra-dizione molto antica e una genesi che sembra una fiaba. Era il 1853, il vecchio campanile quadrato dell’antica cap-pella di Fourvière, demolito, fu ricostruito: l’intenzione era diposarvi in cima una statua della Madonna. La data dell’in-stallazione era stata fissata all’8 settembre, festa della Nati-vità della Vergine, ma l’opera non fu terminata in tempo. Il Cardinale de Bonald decise allora di rimandare la cerimo-nia all’8 dicembre, festa dell’Immacolata Concezione.Durante la mattinata, al suono delle campane e di salve deicannoni, il campanile e la statua ricevettero la benedizionesolenne. Il programma della festa prevedeva l’illuminazionegenerale in serata. Ma piovve tutto il giorno, e la festa fuannullata. A sera tuttavia il cielo schiarì: per la prima volta,allora, il popolo di Lione fece spontaneamente un gesto chesi ripete ancora oggi, un secolo dopo: accese sui davanza-li delle finestre e dei balconi migliaia di lumini. Da allora, ilionesi continuano ad accendere candele sui davanzali dellefinestre, l’8 dicembre, non appena scende la sera.Dal 2000 ad oggi la Festa si è evoluta di pari passo con le

tecnologie di illuminazione. Gli obiettivi? Giocare con laluce, riscoprire attraverso essa un patrimonio e una storia sin-golari, ma anche centrare l’attenzione su luoghi simbolodella storia della città. Senza dimenticare la solidarietà: ogni8 dicembre il visitatore è invitato a partecipare alla realizza-zione di un affresco gigante di lumini per aiutare istituzionibenefiche e associazioni.

FRANCOFORTE: LABORATORIO INTERNAZIONALE

È l’evento degli eventi in materia di festival della luce, arte edesign in perfetto stile tedesco. Luminale, divenuta Biennaledi Cultura della Luce si svolge in concomitanza con la fieraLight+Building e offre una panoramica unica di tecnologie ecreatività. Oltre 150 le installazioni e i lavori che hanno ani-mato l’edizione 2010 da poco conclusa e hanno trasforma-to Francoforte in un vero laboratorio internazionale dell’illumi-nazione. Quest’anno c’è stata anche un’importante partecipazione diartisti italiani della luce, che hanno dato vita alla mostraLuces al Museo archeologico di Francoforte.

EINDHOVEN, LA FESTA GIOVANE

Il Glow Light Festival di Eindhoven è una festa della luce natada pochi anni. Il successo, a partire dalla prima edizione,nel 2006, è stato tuttavia crescente.Oggi l’evento ha fama internazionale: l’edizione 2009 haportato in città oltre 150mila visitatori, che hanno affollato lapiccola città industriale olandese, da sempre vocata all’arte,al design e alla tecnologia. I visitatori hanno libero accessoalla manifestazione, che segue un percorso attraverso il cen-tro cittadino, costellato di affascinanti interventi realizzati daartisti selezionati. Una piattaforma per talenti creativi. “Sindall’esordio la manifestazione è stata adottata dalla città –spiegano gli organizzatori – per questo il tema dell’ultimaedizione è stata Essere pubblici. La luce abbraccia in parti-colare edifici che sono di uso comune e quotidiano per i cit-tadini: il municipio, il mercato, lo stesso cimitero sono inclusinel percorso della manifestazione”.

Ha compiuto dodici anni nel 2009 Luci d’Artista, la rasse-gna torinese fiore all’occhiello della città. Le installazioni lumi-nose sono ormai un must nella stagione invernale di Contem-porary Art Torino, la rassegna ha altissimo valore scenografi-co e qualitativo. Il periodo quello delle luci per antonomasia,ovvero il Natale: il percorso della rassegna ampio e vario,dal centro storico alle periferie passando per il lungo Po.

BERGAMO, ROMANTICA E MUSICALE

Ha tagliato il traguardo dell’undicesima edizione ancheNotti di Luce, festival della luce di Bergamo, rassegna settem-brina nata dal lavoro congiunto di numerosi partners: azien-de del settore e Camera di Commercio, Comune, enti cultu-rali e parrocchie. Un team progettuale ed operativo tutto ber-gamasco, che è cresciuto nel tempo arruolando lightingdesigner e progettisti ma anche musicisti e direttori d’orche-

stra, perché Notti di Luce, dalla sua nascita, abbina magieilluminotecniche e fascinazioni musicali ed artistiche, in unpercorso multidisciplinare e a più firme, che attraversa ilmagnifico centro cittadino e si insinua, per chiese, palazzie vie, a ridisegnare, scoprire e far scoprire bellezze archi-tettoniche e stralci di storia.

BOLOGNA, UN FESTIVAL GRAFFIANTE

“On. Luci di pubblica piazza”. Nel cuore della contestatriceBologna un festival della luce giovane, nato come una sfida:far luce nel buio, per far riaffiorare il sommerso. Prima edizio-ne nel 2007, non in un luogo qualsiasi ma in piazza Verdi,area nevralgica, zona universitaria, confuso e complesso,emblema di una città sospesa fra passato e globalizzazione.“Gli artisti intervengono proprio qui, nella piazza degli stu-denti, luogo di manifestazioni, di opera verdiana, ma anchedi spaccio, appuntamenti e clochard”. Appuntamento inver-nale, pochi e selezionati artisti autori di installazioni aggres-sive e ricche di significato, lontane dallo stereotipo.

A virtual tour from romantic France tounconventional Holland, from the big industrial cities of Ger-many all the way to Milan the city of design, and to the magni-ficent cities of Turin, Bergamo and Bologna, where lights exaltnot only town squares and streets, but also explore the hiddensoul of cities and their historical centres, from the most quiet tothe considerably complex ones.

LYON, CANDLELIGHT AND LEGENDSFour nights where light plays the lead role, and nearly 4 mil-lion visitors every year; in Lyon Light Festival means technicalinnovation, tradition and also solidarity. The Fête des lumiè-res has a very ancient tradition and a story that feels like afairy tale. In 1853 the old square-based bell tower of theancient chapel of Notre-Dame de Fourvière was destroyedand rebuilt; the purpose was to install a statue of the VirginMary, on top of the tower. The proposed date of the installa-tion was September 8th, when the Church celebrates theNativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but the sculptor failed tofinish the statue on time. Cardinal de Bonald, therefore, postponed the unveiling cere-mony to December 8th, the celebration of the ImmaculateConception. That morning, as the church bells rang and can-non salutes were fired, the bell tower and the statue weresolemnly blessed. According to the celebration’s programme,lights were planned to illuminate the streets that same eve-ning. But it started to rain and celebrations were cancelled.However, as evening approached the weather cleared and,for the first time in its history, the people of Lyon spontaneou-sly initiated a tradition that is still followed today, nearly acentury later: thousands of candles were lit and placed onwindowsills and balconies. Ever since, on December 8th,Lyon residents align candlelights on their windowsills as soonas evening descends. From 2000 to present, the Festival hasgained increasingly growing numbers, technological novel-ties and events. The objectives? To play with light and use it to rediscover aunique heritage and history, but also to find and decorateareas that are the symbols of the city itself. Light and solidari-ty: on December 8th every year, visitors are invited to takepart in the creation of a gigantic fresco of candles to supportcharitable institutions and associations.

FRANKFURT, AN INTERNATIONAL LABORATORYIt is the event of events when it comes to Light Festivals; artand design in perfect German style. Over 150 works exhibited who turn Frankfurt into a truly inter-national lighting lab. Luminale, the Lighting Culture Biennial,

EINDHOVEN, THE YOUNG FESTIVALThe Glow Light Festival of Eindhoven is a “young” light festi-val. However, the success achieved ever since its first editionback in 2006 is constantly increasing. Today the event is known internationally: the 2009 editionattracted over 150,000 visitors who crowded into this smallDutch industrial town traditionally devoted to art, design andtechnology. Visitors have free access to Eindhoven’s event thatfollows a route through the city’s centre, studded with fascina-ting works designed by a selected group of artists. A platform for creative talents. “The event was positively recei-ved by the city ever since its first edition,” explain the organi-sers, "as for last year’s edition, the theme of the event was‘Being Public’. Light embraces, in particular, buildings that areof common and daily use for residents; and the town hall, themarket area and the cemetery are also included in the even-t’s route”.

TURIN, VISUAL STAGE EFFECTS ALONG THE PO RIVERIn 2009 Turin’s exhibition “Luci d’Artista”, the city’s premierlight event, launched its twelfth edition. Lighting installationsare now a must-see show during the Contemporary Art Tori-no Piemonte winter season, the Turin-based event with a veryhigh scenic and qualitative profile. The event takes placeduring the season of lights par excellence, Christmas. The exhibition’s route is wide-ranging and diverse and goesfrom the historical centre to the marginal areas of the city allalong the banks of the Po River.

BERGAMO, ROMANTIC AND MUSICAL CHARM Notti di Luce is a light festival held in September in Bergamoborn out of the joint efforts of numerous partners includingindustry players, the Chamber of Commerce, the Municipali-ty and cultural and religious associations, which recently clo-sed its eleventh edition. The first edition was organised in 2007The place chosen to host the event was not just an ordinaryvenue, but Piazza Verdi, one of the city’s major crucial points,i.e. the University area with its crowds and complexities, thesymbol itself of a city caught between past and globalisation.“Artists display there works here, in the student’s square, theplace of many protests and marches, the operas by Giusep-pe Verdi, but also the place of drug trafficking, travellers,meeting points and clochards”. Interest inorganic architecture is growing, thusleading to the planning of passivebuildings and entire neighbourhoods.Like the Aspern Airfield project, a for-mer military site that will provide ac-commodation to 40,000 people divid-ed in both residential and office units,which were specifically conceived todevelop a reference model for sustain-able town-planning.
