2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT GOSPEL MEDITATION

What does it mean to be worthy? There are a few different ways to approach this question. Today’s Gospel highlights two: the way of the Pharisees and the way of John the Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship. Perhaps, then, we “earn” our worth by adhering to the right doctrines and following the right pious practice. The Pharisees thought they were worthy. Due to their religious pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied. John the Baptist’s words to them are strong. “Do not resume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” Of course, Jesus (and John) don’t omit the responsibility for moral behavior. John gives the Pharisees quite a strong warning in that regard. “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance … every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown

into the fire.” It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’s a matter of the heart. If anyone would be worthy in this scenario, it’s John the Baptist. Jesus himself will name him the greatest of prophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his own lowly place in the grand scheme of things. “The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals.” The Pharisees take pride in being “better” than others. John embraces humility in Christ being “better” than him. We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive it as a gift from God. In a few short weeks, we’ll celebrate the birth of Christ. Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote about the Nativity in his “Life of Christ”: “Because [Jesus] was born in a cave, all who wish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is the mark of humility. The proud refuse to stoop and, therefore, they miss divinity.” God invites us to prepare our hearts this Advent. When you consider your own life, where are you looking for your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop? KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS 1. Use postage stamps that feature a religious theme. 2. Send greeting cards that say Merry Christmas and not Happy Holidays. 3. Hang an Advent Calendar and open a window each day. 4. Display your nativity set in a window or on the lawn where others can see it. 5. Place a battery operated candle in a window, or several windows, to symbolize the light of Christ. 6. Listen to traditional Christmas carols that honor Christ’s birth. 7. Ask stores for traditional Christmas wrapping. 8. Read Christmas scripture and stories to children. 9. Research and then explain the tradition of the original Christmas tree. 10. Use decorations with Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays. 11. Pray for the young so that when they become adults they will not regard Christmas as just another

holiday free from work.

Join us December 8th for our fourth annual White Elephant Party; a night of games, laughter, and a bit of competition. Bring your humorous, no longer desired ’gift’ (please remember to wrap the item) to place in the exchange. December 15th we will going to see the movie ‘Hidden Life’, a movie on the life of Blessed Franz Jagerstatter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife, family and their children that keeps his spirit alive. We are still awaiting information on the time and location.

THANK YOU TO OUR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS A huge shout out and thank you to our Middle and High School students who assisted during SOS. Our Middle School Students came the Saturday night before SOS to make blankets for the guests and decorate pillow cases for the children who were staying with us. The Confirmation Candidates (8th graders) returned Sunday to make up the bedrooms and offer assistance to the set up crew. Our high school students came out in full force Wednesday night to make dinner and serve our guests.

Our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Seniors will be meeting for faith, fun and a buffet style luncheon on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is being hosted by Dan Michalec. ALL seniors are welcome to attend this lunch. We encourage you to come and see what our seniors are all about! It will be held at the Polka Restaurant & Beer Café located at 2908 E. Maple Road in Troy. The buffet includes a choice of 2 entrees, homemade rolls, choice of 1 each – salad, potato, vegetable, sauerkraut (no substitutions), coffee, tea and soft drinks. Price per person will be $21.00. You may contact Karen in the Parish Office at 248-879-1310 to sign up for the luncheon, or simply write your name on the sign-up sheet in the Social Hall.

SENIOR HOLIDAY LUNCHEON This year, December 8, which is typically the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the Second Sunday of Advent.

Sundays of Advent “outrank” other observances, so the liturgical celebration of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. We will have Mass at 6:00 PM. Because of the transference, the solemnity is not a holy day of obligation this year.

DECEMBER 8 IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR

December 14, 2019 Please note that our December meeting is on the second Saturday instead of the third Saturday of the month. The meeting starts at 10:00 AM. We have planned entertainment for our meeting. We ask each of you to bring cookies, 6, 12, or a batch. We will have them with our coffee and then divvy them up to bring home. Our meeting will be held in Room 3-4 of the classroom wing. You may enter by that outside door. We will not have a January meeting. Nutrition and taxes are subjects for 2020.

WIDOW-WIDOWER MEETING

November 16, 2019 Minutes

We met in our chapel at 10:00 AM. Fr. Norm presided over a lovely prayer service during which we were able to recommit our deceased loved ones to God. We really wish to thank both Fr. Norm and Ruth Hoppe for all their help in planning and presiding at this service. It left us with happy hearts. After the service we joined each other in the hall for refreshments. A few orders of business were discussed. At our December 14 meeting, we will be able to enter by the outside door to the meeting rooms. We are to bring 6 to 12 cookies to share after our entertainment. We will be able to bag the remainder to take home. We will not meet in January. Submitted by Jane Hime November 18, 2019

The Offertory, or Collection, at Mass is an integral part of the Sunday liturgy, not just because it is the primary means by which the parish receives financial support from the parishioners, but because it is also an expression of our gratitude to God for the blessings He has given us to return a portion of them back to Him for use by His Church. We all take par t in the offertory when we bring our gifts and our thanks to the table. When you give online, through a charitable trust, a direct IRA distribution, stock gift or other means, there might not be anything physical to put in your envelope – but you are no less a part of the offertory because of how you gave – so turn in your envelope with the “EFT” box checked. If you currently give cash but do not use an envelope, consider contacting the office for envelopes and to register. Your cash looks just like everyone else’s. If you use an envelope we know you are here, you are part of the community; you are one who shares in giving and receiving what our parish has to share.

WHY USE MY OFFERTORY ENVELOPE?

People who have IRA accounts and are over 70 1/2 years old need to take required minimum distributions (RMD) from their IRA each year. In many cases, if you make an RMD directly from your IRA to the parish, you can avoid including that distribution in income for tax purposes. If you are considering making a charitable RMD to the parish, please contact your tax advisor to see if you can benefit from giving this way.
