Living in Ballito, it’s

quite possible to lose touch with reality. if you ignore the mainstream media and you have enough money to live unaffected by the harsh reality of what life for the majority of South Africans is like, you can enjoy a fabulous lifestyle. As long as the water keeps flowing and the lights stay on, you can carry on regardless.

On paper, Ballito is golden. This is the focal point for growth and prosperity going forward driven by anchor nodes like the trade port, airport and harbours, improved road and rail infrastructure and government incentives. But is it too good to be true?

Estate living creates offers the allure of total security, private education is booming, wellness and beauty offerings are plentiful, medical attention is readily available at a price and a plethora of designer churches give you an overabundance of choice for your spiritual comfort. There is a wide selection of restaurants, motor dealers, security companies and wedding venues in Ballito and almost every major retail brand has secured a stake in this expensive purple patch. There is money here.

Much of Ballito is like the old South Africa (which wasn’t all bad if you could avoid the socio-political tyranny and were lucky enough to belong to the chosen few). The dawning of our new democracy offered the prospect of a better life for all, but in reality this has only happened where the money is to be found.

And if you can afford to play the game, you are welcome to continue to live the life you choose in Ballito as long as the status quo remains.

But nothing works without maintenance and you don’t often see what goes on behind the scenes to keep the lights on.

Brand Ballito is much more fragile than one might think and every derelict building, vagrant, illegal refuse tipper, poacher, mugger, broken sign, drug dealer and vandal left free to roam here diminishes the value of our collective investment. Every damaged road surface, every broken streetlight, every illegal connection, every firecracker, every assault on indigenous plants and wildlife and every criminal incursion that goes unchecked causes untold damage to the image of our town. And who looks after our common interests here? It’s not who you might expect.

Of course you pay rates and taxes so you expect this to happen automatically but the reality is that

your rates and taxes are used to subsidised areas where there is no money available for services.

The Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association has for many years worked for the interests of Brand Ballito against a backdrop of increasing pressure on service delivery in the region. It is largely due to the efforts of DOCCRA that essential upgrades to roads, pavements, electricity and water infrastructure, incomplete as they may still be, have been accomplished here recently.

But it’s a rather thankless task and those who have served the community in this way have received very little recognition for the work and time committed over the years. Now Louis Luyt Jnr and Barbara Shingler, who have headed DOCCRA through turbulent times, have stepped down and a new committee has been appointed to take up the challenge.

I have joined this committee and with your support, we can help build a better Ballito together. You can expect regular communication in this regard in print and on radio going forward and our aim now is to bring people together to find workable solutions and building effective partnerships here to create a happier community.

And so it begins…

BARBie MeyeR, a confirmed lover of Herman Charles Bosman’s work, tackles her sixth play based on this

infamous author’s work. This time her offering is taken from his iconic book entitled “Cold Stone Jug”.

As a young teacher, Herman Charles Bosman was sent to teach in the Marico district. After about 6 months, he returned to his mother’s home in Johannesburg for the holidays. On the very night he returned, his brother and stepbrother were fighting in their bedroom. In a fit of rage Herman fired his hunting rifle at his stepbrother – whom he later claimed he thought was an intruder, and killed him. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging.

He was 21 years old. Later, a reprieve was granted and his sentence was mitigated to a term of imprisonment with hard labour.

It was while in prison that Bosman wrote the first of his Oom Schalk stories. These would go on to become among some of the world’s best known and loved short stories.

Yet it was his actual prison experiences that provided the background for the moving and wryly humorous stories in his book Cold Stone Jug. This book’s rise to classic status has been unstoppable, and is now widely considered the founding text of all South African prison writings.

Barbie has entitled the new show: “Bosman in the gallows’.

“What a challenge it’s been”, Barbie says, “to condense this incredible book into a theatrical piece fit for human consumption! I have endeavoured to capture his hilarity along with a couple of poignant more sobering experiences that obviously make prison what it is – hard.”

When the book was first released, almost 60 years ago, it was greeted as “too grim and dubious for polite literary circles.” This is a book filled with pathos and grit and yet always written with his unfailing humour and unmistakable high courage and wit.

Barbie will also be including one of his infamous Oom Schalk stories, “How can I not?” she laughs, “I simply can’t resist sneaking one in – his work is such a scream – so intrinsically South African, we need to share it. I do hope to get a couple of ‘new comers’ to his work, hooked!”

Dale Carnegie once said that he loves strawberry shortcake, but he hates the thought of eating worms. Yet, when he goes fishing, he doesn't put strawberry

shortcake on the end of his line. If he did, the fish wouldn't bite! He understands that fish prefer worms.

From a business point of view, making the sale has nothing to do with what you want to sell. It has everything to do with what your ideal clients wants to buy. Through a better understanding of your leads, prospects and client’s needs, you are well positioned to offer a product or service that solves their needs. As obvious as this might seem, many business owners go about things the other way around.

Some questions you might ask yourself include:- what do my ideal clients need from my business industry?- How have i set my business up to sell them what they want to buy?- How do i develop a better understanding of my ideal clients?- Do i continually adapt my business to accommodate the needs of my ideal clients?

Ideally, you want to wrap your business around your clients, solving their problems amongst others: quicker, better or cheaper than your competitors can.

If a better understanding of your leads, prospects and clients is key to rolling this concept out, let us look at this in a little more detail. Knowing your ideal clients is more important than knowing any marketing strategy or sales technique. In fact, the more you understand your ideal clients, the less you'll depend on creative marketing and sales ideas in the future. With this deeper understanding, everything you do will be more effective because you will be aiming at the right people in the right target. You will find that you spend less money attracting these clients and

you will convert more – all because you are using the right bait. Focus on the value you give, the benefits you offer, the advantages you have created over your competitors, the specific solutions you deliver and the increased results you can give them by improving their situation.

Do these things for your clients and they won't be able to do anything, but buy from you. Better still, they will buy from you constantly, which will further reduce your cost of acquiring clients. This will help towards increasing your bottom line. Business can be a real slog or it can be set up to make

you work smart…Look at your business critically and see how well you know your clients, what their needs are and how you solve them. Do they prefer strawberry shortcake or worms?

Granny mouse Chef’s Challenge

WITH the head chef on leave, the three Jr chefs collaborated to create a menu that was not only memorable to the palate but brave. The theme: an infusion. The focus: locally made

craft beer from the Nottingham Road Brewing Company (also famous - not least for its unique brew monikers: Whistling Weasel, Tiddly Toad, Pickled Pig Porter). The result: an infusion menu enhanced and complimented by a spectrum of light ale to dark stout flavours. No small task. However, twenty-seven days later a series of dishes emerged that showed clever ingenuity and culinary creativity precisely of the standard expected from the five star Granny Mouse kitchen.

senses and TastebudsMatching individual beer varieties with complimentary

flavours is a particularly difficult task in that only very specific foods can be enhanced or truly complimented by the ale spectrum. But when the chefs got it right, the food sang, and if you sipped the particular brew used to infuse the dish you were tasting, flavours would light up your senses like a Christmas Tree.

The taste test group agreed: the Deconstructed Prawn Chowder infused with Pickled Pig Porter, and the Pork and Chicken Roulade, also infused with Pickled Pig Porter should be added to the permanent rotation menu immediately. The dessert – a bold collection of unique and traditional flavours (rootbeer, bacon ice cream, beer soaked koeksisters) was also a huge hit. There was little not to admire about the task and the results. As well as from such fresh faced chefs who clearly know their ingredients and shine under creative culinary pressure.

Fine Dining DeconstructedGranny Mouse Assistant GM, Mouton du Toit, conversed

about the boundaries of fine dining and how Granny Mouse seeks to expand those boundaries in people’s minds. “There is a certain stigma around fine dining that we would like to deconstruct. At Granny Mouse, The Eaves is indeed a child-free, fine dining experience, but it is not intended to carry the ego and performance that stereotypically accompanies a five-course fine dining experience. Exclusivity, cozy comfort, quality, excellence, hospitality and of course a memorable culinary experience are of utmost importance to the Granny Mouse experience. And should you have children, you can still receive the five course fine dining meal in the Bistro, with your children.”

The bottom line is that Granny Mouse rarely disappoints. Even if you don’t want to try The Eaves, the relaxed Bistro atmosphere will likely leave you feeling happily content with an equally full belly. The armchairs hug around you and the thatched cottages beckon you to come, sit, relax, enjoy. And whether you stay for a week, a weekend, or have just come for the day, you can leave knowing you have enjoyed one of the finest dining experiences in the Midlands, in a relaxed welcoming atmosphere catered by chefs who without a doubt, know their craft.

Congratulations!!! Jenny rossouw with

the brand new hyundai i 10 Glide

which she won in the WIn-a-Car

Competition courtesy of lifestyle superspar.

Top management at the Midlands’ famous Granny Mouse Country House recently put a challenge to their Sous and pastry chefs – choose a theme, see what you can come up

with, and create a menu worthy of The Eaves (Granny Mouses’ five star, five course, fine dining restaurant). natasha freeman was invited along with the Who’s Who of food

and lifestyle writing in Durban, to taste the results.

FaTher’s Day reCIPe

There's no better way to show Dad you care than with a special

meal. This Father's Day, serve some

heart-shaped pancakes to make Dad feel like

a king.

InsTruCTIons1. Preheat griddle over moderate heat while you mix batter. sift (with a real sifter, if possible) flour, salt, sugar and baking powder into a bowl. Combine egg, milk, and butter in a separate bowl and slowly stir into dry ingredients. mix well so lumps won't gum up the process.2. When a drop of cold water will dance on the griddle, begin cooking. To make a "pen," funnel the batter into a squeeze bottle with a hole in the cap, such as a clean chocolate syrup container. on the griddle, shape the hearts one lobe at a time. They're really just a V shape, which spreads out into a heart on the griddle. you can also write secret messages or your child's initials. Top with fresh berries and maple syrup. makes 24 pancakes. TESTER'S TIP: For a perfectly shaped heart, make regular round pancakes and cut them out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter

Here are some breathing exercises to get started….

AlTeRnATe nOSTRil BReATHing:

When you are feeling anxious or ungrounded, practice Alternate Nostril Breathing, known as Nadi Shodhana in the yogic tradition. This will immediately help you feel calmer.•Hold your right thumb over your right nostril and inhale deeply through your left nostril.•At the peak of your inhalation, close off your left nostril with your fourth finger, lift your right thumb, and then exhale smoothly through your right nostril.•After a full exhalation, inhale through the right nostril, closing it off with your right thumb at the peak of your inhalation, lift your fourth finger and exhale smoothly through your left nostril.•Continue with this practice for 3 to 5 minutes, alternating your breathing through each nostril. Your breathing should be effortless, with your mind gently observing the inflow and outflow of breath.

RATiO BReATHing 1:4:2 this deep breathing technique involves inhaling, holding the breath, and exhaling in the following sequence: What’s important is the ratio (1:4:2), not the actual number of counts that you inhale, hold the breath or

exhale. For example: If you inhale for 4 seconds, then you would hold your breath for 16 seconds and then exhale for 8 seconds. If you do 10 repetitions of this breathing exercise 3 times a day (morning, evening and just before bedtime), 5 to 10 minutes a day, you will experience a noticeable shift in your energy level, your mental clarity and your body’s ability to prevent and heal diseases. One of the main reasons why this breathing exercise delivers many health benefits is because the combined action of the lungs, diaphragm and thorax serve as a ‘pump’ for the lymph fluid. The lymphatic system is often referred to as the sewage system of the body. It cleans up the waste created by virtually all the other systems of the body. The human body has twice as much lymph fluid than it has blood. But unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to keep the blood flowing, the lymphatic system does not have a ‘pump’ to push the lymph fluids around the body. It relies on our breathing and movement in order to perform its function of surrounding every cell in the body; protecting each one by removing dead cells, blood proteins and any other toxins; and excreting them from the body

KApAlABHATi OR “SHining BReATH”is a yogic breathing technique that

releases stress and toxins from the mind and body. It consists of a series of forceful exhalations followed by passive inhalations. •Sit comfortably in an upright posture and rest your hands on your lower belly.•Draw your navel to your spine in a quick motion, forcefully expelling all the air from your lung. The primary movement is from your diaphragm.•Allow your lungs to fill naturally, with no effort.•Perform this cycle ten times, then allow your breathing return to normal and observe the sensations in your body. Repeat these cycles of ten movements three to four times. In addition, Kapalabhati Pranayama cleanses the lungs by stirring up the mucous built-up with forceful exhalations. And finally, it cleanses the blood by exhaling more Carbon Dioxide than in normal breathing. Kapalabhati makes a person more alkaline, and therefore, should be practiced with caution and gradually in order to avoid getting light-headedContraindication: Do not practice Kapalabhati if you are pregnant.

Have a look at what happened to Margaret after surrendering herself to the stylish and caring qualities

of the all new Micro Keratin frizz taming treatment.

In an ever advancing market, departure from previous taming systems that are able only to coat the external structure of the hair, this new treatment boasts a Nanotechnological configuration enabling penetration of keratin deep into the hairs internal structure.

An application of this product, with it's almost zero toxin level, will leave one's hair in a healthy state by removing one hundred percent frizz and combating split ends.

Sun damage, colouring, blow drying ,ironing and bleaching cause us to compromise the hairs' integrity by the loss of Keratin protein from deep within the hair cuticle resulting in frizz, which is exactly what Mags had experienced.

From start to finish the process took a mere ninety minutes which included a quick drying off with a hairdryer at

the end and a five minute whisking over with a round brush.

As pleased as Punch, Margaret left the salon with the knowledge that her hair would remain in this condition for up to six months and that her bad hair days were a thing of the past with this the new stunning look.

Happy Styling!

A mere six months into the year, the grace wing at Ashton is ready for further growth. The grace wing opened its doors to

students aged 3 - 6 in one class of eight in January 2015. The grace wing - Ashton College’s own inclusive autism unit - is sheltered within the Ashlings early learning Centre at Ashton international College, Ballito, serving children on the Autism Spectrum and related disorders. Our trans-disciplinary team makes use of an eclectic blend of international best practice in autism specific curriculum delivery and therapy to support our students’ journey into inclusive, mainstream education.

Staffing falls under the expertise of Tam Bennett, who is assisted by individually trained teachers, teachers’ assistants, fully qualified Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists who are on campus full time.

“We are extremely excited about the exceptional success of the Grace Wing in this unique facility in Kwa-Zulu Natal,” said Tam Bennett. “We know that students of the Grace Wing learn at different rates in different

areas. Our carousel system supports this. As our students master skills in each learning area, they are rotated into a mainstream class of their peers and rotated back into the Grace Wing classrooms for the learning areas where more individualised support is required. As our students become more proficient in additional learning areas, more time is spent in mainstream classes with the long term goal being full time inclusion in Ashton College.”

“We are extending an invitation to potential parents of students to visit the Grace Wing on 19 or 20 June, from 09h00 to 10h30. Our Admissions Office is open for queries from 08h00 to 15h00 daily and may be directed to [email protected] or telephonically on 032 946 2096,” added Mrs Holmes, Head of the Junior College.

Canelands Beach Club re launched their new Spa last week with an introduction to the Healing earth collection of African-inspired spa products and treatments developed by

elisabeth Brandt. Elizabeth is associated with some of the country’s top spas and she believes that using natural ingredients does wonders for the skin as well as the mind, body and soul.

There are two ranges in the collection: Earth Soul, which incorporates many indigenous African ingredients, and Pinotage Grape, based on the benefits of vinotherapy.

Key ingredients in the Earth Soul range include hydrating Kalahari melon, firming African ginger, repairing African potato and oils from the baobab, marula, mongongo nut, argan (a tree endemic to Morocco) and Kigelia africana, or sausage tree. These have all been fully researched and scientifically approved. The range comprises body oils, polishes, butters, creams and wraps.

The Pinotage Grape range is rich in the anti-oxidants of vitamins C and E. It includes cleansers, toners, polishes, marks, serums, creams, oils and gels.

The packaging is biodegradable and recyclable. Products are free of petrochemicals, preservatives, synthetics, colourants and parabens (used as preservatives in the cosmetics industry), and are not tested on animals.

Brandt says: 'We have a nurturing, conscious approach to beauty based upon love for oneself, one’s fellow human beings and the Earth we live on. By going back to the source and listening to the Earth’s secrets, we can truly live in serenity, harmony and balance.'

A number of spas allied to top game lodges are using the products, among them the Singita group, Wilderness Safaris, Shamwari, Sanbona, Tswalu and Kapama.

Now you can enjoy the Healing earth range of treatments at Canelands Beach Club and Spa, 2 Shrimp Lane, Salt Rock.

The computer was inside boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her garage after her husband died, said Victor Gichun, the vice president of Clean Bay Area. She didn't want a tax receipt or leave her contact information, and it wasn't until a few weeks later that workers opened the boxes to discover an Apple I computer inside. It was one of only about 200 first-generation desktop computers assembled by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne in 1976.'We really couldn't believe our eyes. We thought it was fake,' Gichun said. The recycling firm sold the Apple I for $200,000 to a private collection, and because the company gives 50 percent of items sold back to the original owner, Gichun said he wants to split the proceeds with the mystery donor. He said he remembers what she looks like and is asking her to come back to claim her $100,000 check.'To prove who she is,' Gichun said, 'I just need to look at her.'

AT first sight it might appear shocking that a clapped-out car such as this would be on the market for almost

a quarter of a million pounds. But the dishevelled-looking vehicle is a celebrated 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series III and will be worth three times its £220,000 price if fully restored.

Despite its appearance it remains an attractive prospect for many car enthusiasts by offering the rare chance to restore a virtually-untouched DB4. But the restoration project will cost up to £350,000 - meaning whoever buys it will have to pay at least £570,000 to return it to its former glory.

There were about 1,100 DB4 Series III cars made from 1958 to 1963 - and it is becoming tougher to find one that offers a restoration project.

The British vehicle was supplied new in July 1961 to a Robert Drummond of London, who lived in a central postcode region in the capital of SW1.

The car - to be auctioned in

Buckinghamshire - was off the road in storage when bought by the unnamed current owner in 1982 as a restoration project.

Work was carried out the next year - including the engine being stripped, fully rebuilt and a new chassis fitted - but it has hardly been touched since.

The owner, who lives in the North West of England, has now decided it is time to part with the car that has not been driven in three decades.

A spokesman for auctioneers Bonhams said: ‘We are advised that the Aston is completely original and comes with all components including the original leather interior, the latter in good condition. Someone has had a go at restoring it but for whatever reason never saw the project through. It has not been on the road since the work was done. Offered for completion and sold strictly as viewed, this is a potentially most rewarding restoration project.’

Now, here’s a restoration project for you!
