THERE is irrefutable evidence to prove

that a good night’s sleep is essential for your general well-being but despite this, many of the people I know are plagued by sleeplessness. One of the main reasons for this is anxiety or worry which is somehow amplified at night and problems seem to grow and multiply as the mind races in panic.

We’ve all been there in one way or another and it’s a subject that many great minds have grappled with through the ages to provide some considered ideas on the matter.

So I thought that it might be interesting to assemble some of this insight and advice that you can keep somewhere safe to refer to when you need it.Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. Benjamin FranklinNo amount of anxiety makes any difference to anything that is going to happen. Alan WattsThough it may feel otherwise, enjoying life is no more dangerous than apprehending it with continuous anxiety and gloom. Alain de BottonSometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, so what. That’s one of my favourite things to say. So what. Andy WarholThe most important decision you make is to be in a good mood. VoltaireYou must learn a new way to think

before you can master a new way to be. Marianne WilliamsonPeople become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them. George Bernard ShawIf you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience. Deepak ChopraThe what-if’s and the should-have’s will eat your brain. John O’CallaghanNobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal. Albert CamusAnxiety is not being able to sleep because you said something wrong two years ago and can’t stop thinking about it. UnknownDrag your thoughts away from your troubles… by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it. Mark TwainLife is way too short to spend another day at war with yourself. UnknownThe greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another. William JamesNothing diminishes anxiety faster than action.

Walter Anderson

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. Elbert HubbardToo many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. UnknownYou’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens. Louise L. HayAlthough anxiety is part of life, never let it control you. Paulo CoelhoIf you gathered up all the fearful thoughts that exist in the mind of the average person, looked at them objectively, and tried to decide just how much good they provided that person, you would see that not some but all fearful thoughts are useless. They do no good. Zero. They interfere with dreams, hopes, desire and progress. Richard Carlson

So, when you have spent too much time watching the news or scrolling through Facebook, or listening to another horror story about corruption, crime or how South Africa is tumbling into a state of anarchy, remember that you have a choice. Go with the flow or choose to be happy…because you can!

THERE was time, many years ago when it was thought that taking up teaching as a profession was an easy

option. Well, like everything else, times

have changed, and theoretically only teachers would disagree with the above statement. What has certainly changed are the challenges that we all face and there are many stories that we could share, but for this week’s article, I thought I would highlight a typical day of an English teacher in the Senior College.

Please understand that this, by no mean, detracts from any other profession or career. They all have their story to tell!

Anne, who teaches five English classes per day, is a mother of two children, age 4 and 7 and wife to Mark. Anne rises at 05h15 to ensure that she gets the earlier, positive start to her day. Dishes are packed in the dishwasher, a load of washing starts its cycle, hubby (Mark) gets his coffee in bed, kids (hers) are woken up and the process of getting them ready for school, hits her time clock. She jumps into the shower, washes her hair, quickly dresses, blow dries her hair, packs for school while preparing the first meal of the day – breakfast. Dad (Mark) gets up to join the family for breakfast and helps with the last minute rush to get bags and the 4 year old to Pre-School. Anne and the 7 year old, pack the school

bag, sports kit and teaching basket filled with marked English Essays, into the boot to start their day. After the usual mad rush of the morning, Anne just makes it to the staff morning news at 07h10. And so Anne’s working day begins.

Anne will see up to 100 students during the day and five times that number over a week – (07h10 -14h30 every day, five days a week). Two days of the week, her day is extended as she assists students after school in Help Sessions which continues to 16h00. Two days a week she coaches Hockey, her passion and delight, as she sees her students in a different light. At 16h45 she collects her own children from Aftercare and heads home.

Anne takes up her chores and family responsibilities once again. Homework with the 7 year old, bathing of the 4 year old and putting on the supper while listening to the 7 year old do his compulsory daily reading – (after all Anne is an English teacher and must encourage her own children to be literate). While waiting for her cooking and her husband Mark to return home, Anne takes out her marking and prep-work for the following day. Mark comes home and helps to occupy the children and they

eat their supper together. She makes sure the kids brush their teeth, have their bed time story and prayers and are tucked in bed. Then back to the book marking and prep for another couple of hours, shower and bed – and it is only Monday!

Besides all of the above mentioned, there is a multitude of other tasks that take place in Anne’s school day. However, there are still people that refer to teaching as the ‘half day’ job!

Do not measure teaching by the length of a day, but rather the intensity of the day! (100 students per day – Mom-Wife-Teacher).

WE PAY TRIBUE TO ALL OUR TEACHERS (MALE & FEMALE) AND THANK THEM FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS FOR THEIR PASSION, COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO THEIR PROFESSION – EDUCATING THE FUTURE GENERATIONS OF OUR COUNTRY!

We salute you!

HELPING THE REAL ESTATE CONSULTANT SELL AND ACHIEVE THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR PROPERTY

AT some point in our lives we have

heard the cliché “Location Location Location!” Although this cliché rings true

I want to bring something also vitally important to the attention of the motivated seller: the presentation of the property!

The presentation of a property is one of the critical factors in enquiry/ lead generation. When a buyer surfs the web looking for property he or she takes into account a couple of factors when narrowing down the list of properties to view.1.The location or address2.The price 3.Realistic photographs4.As many features about the property as possible

Given the fact that buyers are faced with hundreds of advertisements the presentation is crucial when it comes to compiling the viewing shortlist.

Besides the location, photographs are vital to any property presentation and advertisement. I have seen numerous property advertisements with poor quality photographs, and by poor quality I mean photographs of cluttered, untidy homes, published on websites that are seen by thousands of buyers. One can be very sure these listings will attract no prospective buyers, or in the best case scenario mainly bargain hunters trying to take advantage of sellers.

There are a few factors that influence the quality of the photographs and overall presentation of a property.1.The overall condition of the property 2.The curb/ road appeal of the property3.The condition of the garden 4.The condition of the interior of the home

If there are any issues with any of the above points a good agent will advise the seller on how to remedy them. However it is crucial for the seller to take this advice to heart in order to present the property in a professional manner and get the best possible price from the market. This is a fairly easy exercise, however it tends to be less so for landlords of rental properties.

Selling Your Rental PropertyAny landlord who is contemplating

the selling of a property needs to include the tenant during the decision making process. This will make it a less painful exercise for all parties concerned. It might be beneficial for a landlord to acquire a garden service to spruce up the garden and increase the property’s curb/ street appeal, or a cleaning service may be used to make sure the home itself is presentable for photographs and to the buyer viewing

the property. A fresh coat of paint goes a long way to increase the desirability of property. But the tenant must be considered during this process as they are the one’s offering up their time and privacy during the selling process. It is thus in the best interest of the landlord to have a courteous relationship with the tenant. The importance of such a relationship is emphasized when it comes to the agent gaining access to the property. A difficult or unhappy tenant can make it extremely testing for an agent to either list the property or take a buyer to view the property.

Another aspect that can frustrate a tenant is when a property is listed with numerous agencies and hordes of potential buyers charge in and out, disrupting their home life. An easy way to remedy this problem and limit the disruption is to award a sole mandate to one agency.

The advantages of the sole mandate in this particular situation is:1. the agent will qualify each enquiring buyer 2. other agencies will have to work through the sole mandate holder to gain access

The sold mandate not only increases the exclusivity of a property, but also keeps disruption to a minimum for those living on the property.

A courteous relationship should also be established between the agent and tenant, but this will only be possible if one exists between the landlord and tenant OR rental agent and tenant.

There are numerous factors that can impact on the presentation of a property, but through consultation and the owner taking the actions suggested by the agent the property will be properly presented and attract the right buyer and sell for the best possible price the market has to offer.

So in short: 1. Photographs need to look professional and accentuate the property’s features – this might mean that the seller/tenant may have to get rid of some clutter, move some furniture around or add some objects (flowers/ ornaments) to make the property seem more like home and not just four brick walls!2. The publishing (heading and description) needs to highlight the unique features of the property and provide as much information as possible about the property and its location. 3. Sole mandates will increase exclusivity and allow for a better relationship between the tenant and an agent/ landlord.4. The result: Sold at a better price!

College North Coast presented their own special performances on stage on Wednesday, 18 March.

An incredible variety of talent was on show including Ethan Luyt and supporting singers, backed by a large group of dancers performing “Uptown Funk”.

Many stand-out performances wowed the appreciative and responsive audience, including amongst others, Sabrina Ferreira’s dance piece entitled “Turning Pages”, Keyan Sampson on drums, Ofentse Mafoko at rap, and Julia Durant with “Beneath your Beautiful”.

As announcer and judge, Michael Charles stated it was an almost impossible task selecting winners from such an array of incredible talent.

The judges however made special mention of Danté Francesconi’s “Not About Angels” and Amber Aucamp’s “Mama’s Broken Heart”. Siphesihle Gwala’s hip-hop dance won third, with Georgina Grassie’s “Thinking Out Loud” winning second.

The overall winner was an outstanding performance with piano and song self-written and adapted from a piece of incidental music by Dylan Fouché.

8 FOOD 25 March - 7 April 2015 IN P R IN T , O N A IR O N L IN E

Ice Cream is an unusual choice, where did the idea come from?

Dave I’ve been in the UK restaurant industry for over 25 years, eventually setting up & running a large group of award winning pubs & restaurants. After following my heart to Durban in 2006 & being a full time mum to my two small kids for a few years, I was offered a 12 month consultancy position with Wagamama UK who needed my expertise in setting up a new concept in the market town of Leamington Spa. Being based in Durban & working in Leamington Spa I travelled 14 times to London in 12 months to get the project open for them.

At the end of the contract I realised I wanted to put my experience to good use in SA. The obvious choice would be to open a restaurant or a bar, but with 2 young children that just didn’t make sense.

I had dabbled around with hand-made ice cream since early 2000, when the head chef of one of our restaurants refused to serve commercial ice cream with her incredible desserts & started making ice cream for herself. I couldn’t believe what I was tasting.

With the wonderful Durban climate in our favour, my vision & experience in the food industry & South African’s being more aware of food provenance, I spotted a gap in the market & decided to give it a go.

It must have been challenging learning the ropes, who taught you?

I had been making ice cream at home for 13 years, so I understood the basics of that, but the challenge came when I needed to turn dinner party ice cream recipes in to something on a slightly larger scale.

In the beginning, it would take around 10 attempts to get the balance right in the recipes, but now we have the basics right, developing new flavours is great fun!

Sounds exciting, how did you start?I wanted to test the market first before

I invested too much money so we took advantage of a kids market at Simbithi Country Club & I made a couple of flavours for my 6 year daughter to sell there. It went down a treat. Immediately after that I went to work on the brand, the business model & the recipes.

In March 2014 we were approached to take a stall at the Foodies Market at Ballito Lifestyle Market & it was here that people

really started to get hooked.

I now employ 2 local previously disadvantaged ladies & look forward to employing more people from our community.

What makes your product stand out from the crowd? We take locally farmed free range eggs, KZN milk, cream & sugar & make ice cream the old fashioned way, on the stove top. We like to use ingredients that are at their best & of course celebrate everything KZN so we add seasonal KZN produce to our base; granadillas, bananas,

macadamias, lemons, limes, naartjies, strawberries & litchis all come from local farmers. Vanilla with salted macadamia praline is a hot favourite at the moment.

Of course we couldn’t have a range of ice creams without vanilla & chocolate so we also take the finest vanilla from Madagascar & 70% chocolate from Belgium.

We also have a range

of sorbets; the favourite at the moment is a Gin & Tonic sorbet using a Dry London Gin which is made in the heart of KZN & limes grown on a local Ballito farm.

We also hand make our own vanilla sugar cones & have recently added a range of spectacular ice cream cakes.

What about for the health conscious? We don’t believe in adding any nasties to our ice

creams so unlike commercial ice creams you won’t find any colourants, flavourings, stabilisers or preservatives in any of our products. We use nature to colour, eggs to stabilise & the freezer to preserve.

Is our ice cream fattening? It depends on how much of it you eat! But remember we don’t pump any air into our ice cream; this means you need less scoops per serving!

For those that are banting, diabetic or just off sugar we have a range of ice creams we’ve called The Innocent Range. Here we replace the sugar with a little stevia, meaning everyone can enjoy some Scoop.

Sounds great, now where can I purchase it?

You’ll find Scoop at all of the local food markets around Ballito; The Foodies Market Lifestyle Centre, The Litchi Market, Burnedale Farmers Market.

In addition you will find it at Home Grown, Salt Cafe & on the menu at Mamma G’s.

Look out for us in specialist food stores around the area & we have plans for 2 KZN branches in the coming months.

You say the word YOGA

and everyone has an image they immediately think of. A skinny blonde in pink spandex carrying a yoga mat? A hippy in a field with eyes closed meditating? A contortionist wrapping their leg behind their neck? We have seen clips of awesome real actual men doing yoga and we know that the All Black rugby squad and Aussie cricket team practice Power Yoga… but the thing is yoga is just so much more than that.

Yoga is an ancient science of the body (about 4000 years old) found in ancient manuscripts called Vedas. Yoga means the joining of the body with the mind. The vedas were written in Sanskrit (which is said to be the oldest language in the world, 6000 years old) which is why many of the poses are referred to by their Sanskrit name.

The point of yoga is to reveal imbalances in our bodies through a series of asanas (or poses). Through our practice and our focus, it becomes very revealing to us what is weak, what is missing and what needs our focus.

Through this, yoga attempts to restore balance in the body (everybody does a repetitive action… you don’t need to be a professional golfer or any sort of athlete to have this happen to you. Just sitting rounded at your computer day in and day out, clicking at your mouse will bring imbalance to your spine and shoulders and your elbow)

But not just strength and flexibility, yoga does so much more on an internal level…

HERE ARE A FEW OF THE MANY BENEFITS…•Develops flexibility, strength and

stamina•Tones and stretches muscles.

Prevents cartilage and joint breakdown

•Alleviates back and neck pain and protects your spine and perfects your posture

•Detoxify internal organs, the body is oxygenated and filled with healthy blood, decongested and restored.

•Improves breathing and lung capacity which beneficial for asthmatics

•Improves metabolism and elimination, helpful for constipation

•Reduces stress by normalising cortisol (stress hormone / adrenal) levels

•Assists weight reduction and control

•Aids lowering blood pressure and ups your heart rate

•Lowers blood sugar •Can alleviate menstrual

problems•Eases insomnia and anxiety

Yoga being so old, there are many different interpretations and styles. Some are faster than others. Some are restorative. Some are repetitive. All are designed to help you to connect with yourself, mentally and physically. My suggestion is this, if you are interested in trying yoga, try a class and if you don’t like it, don’t give up on yoga, just try another teacher and perhaps another discipline.

Another obstacle that I am confronted with a fair bit is the worry that yoga is in fact, tied to the Hindu religion. This is another misunderstanding, being that it is steeped in the same history of India. Osho has stated that Yoga is a pure science (the science of the body) just like mathematics, physics or chemistry.

Physics is not Christian, physics is not Buddhist. If Christians have discovered the laws of physics, then too physics is not Christian. It is just accidental that Christians have come to discover the laws of physics. But physics remains just a science. Yoga is a science—it is just an accident that Hindus discovered it. It is not Hindu. It is a pure mathematics of the inner being. So a Mohammedan can be a yogi, a Christian can be a yogi, a Buddhist can be a yogi. T.K.V. Desikachar actually remarked that: "Yoga was rejected by Hinduism... because yoga would not insist that God exists. It didn't say there was no God but just wouldn't insist there was....

But aside from all those lovely benefits, yoga reduces our stress levels. Plain and simple. And in the 21st century there isn’t a person out there that can say they don’t need that. It’s achieved through the yoga breathing and the mental focus and the methodical meditation in motion. There should be no competition in us to touch our toes first or try an advanced pose, but we should be very seriously trying to release the stress we accumulate in our lives.

DO you keep busy all of the time to shy away from being alone with your thoughts? Are you just bored or is it

more than that – a tugging in you but you don’t know what it is or where it’s coming from – is it the abdomen is it the navel am I sick? Are you listening or determined not to? If you connect with this and it sounds familiar try to hear what your body is telling you – maybe it just wants you to be still and quiet and stop fighting it. Yoga give

People all complain about being too busy and never having time for themselves but if you offer them an hour alone with no prescribed activity they panic. Most people cannot do nothing for 5 minutes let alone 1 hour. Take the time to decode the feelings, the quiet gut ache, not quite nausea, nagging tugging. Acknowledge if your life isn’t quite

right. You don’t even have to

find solutions – just the quiet acknowledgement will spark change. Being truthful starts with the Self. Nothing brings you into the present more than just being alone and silent. We are constantly rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, our brains a flurry of what ifs and if onlys, memories jostling with one another for space – its mayhem!

Only when it all calms down can the thoughts subside – the practice of yoga helps you to control it and lets you know it is possible – it’s your mind – know when to rest it – it’s your body – know when to listen to it and get it under control.

When your head wants cheesecake your body may want spinach – negotiate with the two and make better choices

YOGA IN THE DARK

- nothing wrong with cheesecake but choosing only with the head will not achieve the balance and moderation we are seeking.

It’s actually all so simple- we’re supposed to live joyfully on this beautiful planet and partake of the rich bounty of foods produced by Mother Nature and yet we load everything with additives and preservatives to change flavour and make food last longer and can’t even cope with an hour of load shedding.

Yes it’s a bit galling when you pay for services and don’t receive but try to see it as a time of silence and darkness to sort out your thoughts without

so much as the hum of the fridge – yet another man made necessity of dubious benefit.

We just carry on and yoga in the dark – it’s still wonderful. It’s never as dark outside as you think it is when you’re inside with all the lights on. Don’t think crime and fear, think moonlight and stars and get out there and observe!

If your necks too stiff and tight to gaze up into the glorious heavens you need to come to yoga badly – don’t waste another day of being stiff and inactive – see you soon!

Whether it’s

genuine or not, a headache will always ruin somebody's fun. They're extremely common, utterly inconvenient, (can be) totally debilitating, but mostly are just down right irritating! There are also lots of different types of headache: tension, cluster, migraine, hormonal etc. etc. but, let's be honest, you just want to know how to make them go away! So for simplicity (and time)'s sake when I say 'headache' take it as a blanket term that covers all the different types (unless otherwise stated).

Here are 7 causes of a headache and what to do about it;

Food AllergiesStudies have shown most headache

sufferers to have food allergies. If a person eats a food they are sensitive to (e.g. gluten, dairy etc), the body will mount an immune response. This triggers the release of histamine, which can cause a headache. Certain foods also naturally contain higher amounts of histamine and are best avoided. These include; avocado, oranges, tomato, walnuts, spinach, eggplant, dried fruit, pickles, mayonnaise and olives. Tyramine is another naturally occurring chemical that is best avoided if you are prone to getting headaches. Foods high in tyramine include; aged meats, cheese, fermented foods, sausage, beer, wine and chocolate.

Gut DysbiosisThis basically means the number

of bad bacteria in the digestive system far outnumber the good – which is not good! Too many bad microbes can wreak havoc on one's body. Candida overgrowth is one such issue which may result in the production of unwanted chemicals such as, aldehyde and benzene. Both of these chemicals are known to cause a wide range of physical effects, including severe headaches. A change of diet is highly recommended along with targeted herbs (such as pau d'arco and wild oregano oil) to help destroy any unwanted pathogens. Next, supplement with specific nutrients (such as l-glutamine, aloe and deglycerrized licorice) to restore gut health and finally take high dose probiotics to recolonise the gut with good bacteria.

It is also worth mentioning that gut dysbiosis naturally increases inflammation... which of course also causes headaches.

Nutritional DeficienciesStress, an unhealthy diet, gut

dysbiosis and inflammation all cause

the mal-absorption of important nutrients from our food. Nutrient deficiencies of essential fatty acids, vitamin B6, zinc, folic acid, calcium and magnesium (to name a few) can all cause headaches.

Address the issue(s) that may be causing these deficiencies, while supplementing with a full-spectrum, high quality multi-mineral and multi-vitamin to cover all your bases.

ToxinsWe are exposed to a wide variety of

environmental toxins and chemicals on a daily basis - many of which can cause headaches. Examples include; perfume, synthetic fragrances, make-up, shampoo, household cleaning products, pollution in the air, etc. Look for non-toxic alternatives for these products and (as far as possible) avoid polluted and industrial areas.

Joint DysfunctionHeadaches can simply be referred

pain from the joints and/or muscles in the neck and spine. If there is any tension, misalignment, injury or impaired movement, it can cause irritation to the surrounding nerves. This irritation can then lead to a headache. Get your body assessed by a movement specialist to check whether this is the cause of your pain and follow the recommended course of treatment/therapy.

Note: Pilates is an excellent form of exercise to help strengthen, stabilise and support proper joint movement and body alignment!

Blood Sugar ImbalancesThe more your blood sugar goes

up and down by eating sugary foods the more likely you are to experience a headache. A low carb high fat (LCHF) diet is an excellent way to balance blood sugar levels, regulate appetite and thus reduce the occurrence of headaches. Useful blood sugar balancing supplements to consider include cinnamon and chromium.

HormonesEven a slight imbalance in the

natural ebb and flow of progesterone and estrogen in the monthly female cycle can trigger a headache. Hormonal imbalances can be caused by the dietary intake of xeno-estrogens, liver dysfunction, stress and nutrient deficiencies. Get your hormones tested and seek the necessary treatment if you think this may be the cause of your headaches.

BUT I'M STILL GETTING HEADACHES!

So if you have ruled out the above 7 then other possible causes to consider are; dietary MSG & aspartame intake, caffeine intake, obesity, drugs and

certain medications, lack of sleep, dehydration, lack of exercise, sitting long hours, too much blue-light exposure (from computers, cellphones, TV etc), never going outside and mental/emotional stress.

SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP.Aside from those already mentioned;

• Magnesium is excellent as a muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, sleep-aid and anti-stress mineral.

• Feverfew & ginger have shown to reduce the severity of migraines when taken soon after the onset of an attack.

• Omega 3 fish oil is anti-inflammatory, helps balance hormones as well as blood sugar levels.

• Co-Q10 helps reduce the severity and frequency of headaches.

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits all approach to treating headaches. However, they CAN be reduced and, I believe, totally eliminated once you discover the cause and take the appropriate steps to heal and support your body.

EVERYWHERE we look the media is telling us how dangerous sugar

is for our health and it’s about time we sit up and take note! Just because you do a bit of exercise does not make it okay for you to have sugar - it does not give energy! I spend a lot of time educating my clients on nutrition and I cannot stress this enough - “Sugar is toxic and it’s killing us!"

Sugar is directly linked to Ageing, Wrinkles, Depression, Exhaustion, Diabetes of the Brain, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and Heart disease, Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, Addiction, High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Cancer.

Sugar wreaks havoc on your face, it attaches to proteins to form harmful molecules called AGEs. These nasties damage the components that keep your skin firm and elastic. The result: - Wrinkles and Saggy Skin.

Research has revealed that those who indulged in sugary treats had a 40% greater risk of developing depression. An insulin resistant body appears to release lower levels of feel-good dopamine.

Sugar leads to exhaustion, it takes only 30 minutes or less to go from your sugar "HIGH" to a full on crash. You then need another "HIGH”, your body screams for sugar to get back up and so the vicious cycle continues. It is widely accepted now that sugar is as addictive as cocaine and has the same effects on the brain as cocaine does.

What’s next? Can it get worse? How about this one, Diabetes

of the Brain! Oh No! University studies suggest that Alzheimer’s is a metabolic disease. The brain’s ability to use glucose and produce energy is DAMAGED. It’s like having Diabetes of the Brain.

Are these good enough reasons to cut down on sugar and ultimately cut out sugar completely, I feel convinced already but wait......... there’s more!

Sugar primes your body for diabetes.Fatty globules form around your liver

which causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Sugar hammers your heart! Heart disease and stroke are the number one cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes.

Sugar makes you feel famished, new

research suggests eating too much sugar scrambles your body's ability to tell your brain you are full.

So back to that "cocaine" story. Much like street drugs, sugar triggers the release of chemicals that set off the brains pleasure centre and as with street drugs, people develop a tolerance for sugar. We need more and more sugar to satisfy our sugar craving.

Then of course we have the high blood pressure issue linked to excess sugar, added sugar causes excess insulin in the bloodstream, which takes its toll on your arteries and then a stroke or heart attack follows.

And then there’s the huge cancer connection. Cancer literally lives, flourishes and thrives on sugar.

Do you get the picture? Are you ready to love yourself out of your sugar addiction?

Here are a few tips to get you started.1. Know how much is too much.

The American Heart Association says roughly six teaspoons for woman and nine teaspoons for men BUT the goal is to come underneath that as much as possible, trying to cut down by a teaspoon each week until ultimately you have cut added sugar from your diet.

2. Be prepared to be challenged. Remember sugar can be an addiction so treat it as one. Yes you can train your body to stop craving sugar.

DICIPLINE, WILLPOWER and DETERMINATION = SUCCESS

It will get easier.

3. Educate yourself, learn the difference between naturally occurring sugar and added sugar. Some sugars occur naturally in fruits, veggies and dairy products. Watch out for the "added sugar," this is the sugar that has such a negative effect on your health and appearance.

4. Read nutrition labels. This is one of the most important points. You can learn so much by learning to decipher food labels. Sugar is in a vast majority of all our packaged foods. In a review of over 85 000 products, 74% of those products contained sugar. Examples that come to mind are pasta sauces, breads, low fat yogurts, protein bars and salad dressings.

Ingredients are listed in order from greatest amounts to the least amount so the higher up on the list it is, the more of it there is. Remember 5 grams of sugar is roughly a teaspoon. Count the grams of sugar per 100 grams.

5. Watch what you drink - extremely important. You can totally sabotage your efforts here. The big culprits are the fizzy drinks, bottled teas, sports drinks, energy drinks and many of your so-called health drinks are full of sugar. Fruit juices are a big culprit as well, even if the packaging says "NO ADDED SUGAR". The fructose will be digested way faster than if you ate the fruit in its

original form due to a lack of fibre. All you will get is the dreaded energy spike and the crash which will force you into the sugar crave cycle.

Stick to water. 6. Snack on food with fat and protein.7. Don’t go grocery shopping when you

hungry.8. Beware of low fat products, the fat is

normally substituted with sugar9. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep most nights.

Not getting enough sleep makes you crave high calorie foods - anything with tons of sugar.

Last but by no means least, exercise brings it all together. A healthy body encourages a healthy mind which helps with those three big words:

DICIPLINE…WILLPOWER…DETERMINATION

And of course a healthy exercise routine helps your body rid itself of the sugar toxins when you do fail. Exercise will help with the elimination of the build-up of fatty globules around your internal organs caused by sugar.

Being active helps in improving blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, diabetes and all the other nasties associated with sugar addiction.

Have a joyful week, fill it with discipline, willpower and determination.

You will love the outcome.

THERE AIN’T NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN!

While browsing through a recent

edition of one of South Africa’s leading hair magazines, I came

across a snippet that caught my fancy so much that I thought it worth sharing. The article was in the form of a quiz with multiple choice answers, and it painted an interesting picture of hair-trends through the ages.

The first question asked which distinctive hair-style dominated the fashion world throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s. The options on offer were the Perm, the Bob, the Beehive, or the Ponytail.

The second question turned the spotlight onto the men, showcasing a style that was cut short at the back with a long, combed top section and sideburns. Another version of this trend-setting look sported a long, curly fringe

brushed upwards. The reader was tasked with identifying the period of history that was characterised by this coiffure: the Middle Ages, the Regency period, the Georgian age, or Victorian times.

The third challenge was to select the nickname of the signature mop-top hairstyle immortalized by The Beatles from a list of Moppy, Pudding Bowl, Arthur, and Simon.

The penultimate question was to identify the period during which big, white-powdered wigs were worn and the final challenge was to name the era in which women’s hairstyles reflected the dress fashions of the day.

Of course I checked the answers and what interested me was the fact that each of the ‘correct’ styles are still to be seen around town today.

The answer to Question 1 was the Beehive, which is still seen on catwalks and in the media and was the signature look of pop icon Amy Winehouse.

The second hairstyle in question

was at the cutting edge of men’s fashion during the Regency period, between 1811 and 1820, and elicited longing sighs from the ladies when sported by Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ – which might be why there are men out there today who still style their hair this way!

The 1960s was an era of quirky hairstyles known by equally quirky nicknames, such as the Beatles’ trademark Arthur, a name coined at random by George Harrison when asked for one by a reporter.

White period wigs, from the French Georgian era – NOT Elizabethan, as I thought! - are still popular in avante garde fashion shows today and, of course, still adorn the heads of the legal profession in court.

Finally, it was during the Victorian era that women's hair was styled to reflect the fashion known as the bustle, which was created by drawing the skirts back and gathering them up behind. Hair

was swept up in the front, daringly revealing the ears for the first time, while flowers and curls were added for a decorative touch.

Perhaps the lesson is not to laugh too loudly at the weird and wonderful hairstyles sported by our parents and grandparents - we might end up wearing them again next year!

Happy styling!

16 GENERAL INTEREST 25 March - 7 April 2015 IN P R IN T , O N A IR O N L IN E

CREATING a team-building culture all starts with individual, engaged employees. Engaged employees are happier at work, achieve more and routinely go above and

beyond what is expected. They often encourage other employees and are proud to be a part of the business. Now, achieving this is easier said than done. To begin

with you need to identify opportunities, simplify solutions and encourage accountability.

Herewith some pointers to create an atmosphere that fosters accountability:

1. EVALUATE YOUR EMPLOYEES - Your ideal employees are engaged on the job. They meet their targets, which encourages the performance of fellow employees. Do an assessments to identify those that stand out. Communicate with the employee, asking questions: What can be improved? What do you need? What can be adjusted? What should we start, stop or continue doing?

2. EVALUATE YOUR LEADERS - Engaging employees is an important part of what your leaders should do. To help increase the effectiveness of your leaders, you need to identify the leadership skills that are most effective for engaging employees. Assess and get feedback about each leader from their peers and direct reports. Align the leader’s behaviours and leadership skills to the expectations of the business and then close the gap through on-the-job feedback and coaching.

3. EVALUATE YOUR TEAM - Every team member brings something unique to the table. It’s important to identify the individual talents of each member and how those skill sets interact. Through these interaction patterns, you will see what adjustments need to be made in the work environment. How the team works together directly affects the overall productivity of the business. With an overall understanding of their unique strengths and talents you will be able to make appropriate adjustments for maximum efficiency.

4. ESTABLISH A CULTURE TO VALUE ENGAGEMENT - Culture represents the unique personality of your business: core values, ethics, even the rules that guide behaviour. Establishing clarity of your vision of the future is crucial. Then go about establishing a work culture that is stimulating, fulfilling to your employees with leadership from people they can respect. These three elements will ensure that your employees remain engaged and productive throughout the course of their employment.

5. REWARD AND RECOGNIZE TEAMWORK - While individual achievements are great, collaborative ideas and practices are what create a team building culture. Encourage team members to work together to come up with the very best ideas and reward them when they do.

When you enhance your existing team with the use of predictive performance patterns and job matching, you will accelerate performance exponentially. It’s also important to remember that team building isn’t just a once-off exercise. This is something that you should work on regularly to make it part of your business culture.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A RELATIVE

The importance of writing a willIf you die

without having a valid will in place, you are deemed to

have died intestate. This means that your hard earned assets will be divided up according to statute rather than to your wishes. Your estate may well end up being distributed to people you never intended would inherit from you, leaving your deserving loved ones without a dime. IF YOU DIE WITHOUT A WILL (UNDER THE RULES OF INTESTACY):

•Partners to whom you are not married (or in a civil partnership with)

get absolutely nothing even if they were co-habiting with you at the time of your death.

•If you are married (or in a Civil Partnership), the amount going to your spouse/civil partner is restricted with the possibility that even estranged relatives could benefit.

•Part of your estate could go to your parents. Whilst you may wish to provide for elderly parents, the consequence could be an additional charge to Inheritance Tax on the subsequent death of your parents.

•If you die and have no relatives then your WHOLE estate would go to the government rather than dear friends or charitable causes whom you may want to benefit.

•It is also possible to unwittingly die intestate. This will happen if you have made a Will but it is declared invalid. This often happens where people have purchased a “Do It Yourself” Will at a stationery shop or downloaded one from the Internet rather than taken professional advice.

WHY IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO UPDATE YOUR WILL FREQUENTLY

•Unless specifically stated otherwise, divorce (or dissolution of a civil partnership) does not automatically revoke a Will.

•A change in your personal or financial circumstance may warrant it, e.g. the birth

of your children, the death of an heir, etc.

EXPEDITE ESTATE ADMINISTRATION

In accordance with South African law if a person dies intestate leaving no Will or the Will is invalid or incomplete in any way then it becomes necessary, by law, to appoint an Administrator to administer the deceased estate and the decision of whom to appoint is left to the relatives or to the Courts. However, if a person dies leaving a Will, they are able to appoint an Executor of their choice to administer the deceased estate and someone who they trust and can rely on to get the job done.

INHERITANCE TAX CAN BE REDUCED / ELIMINATED

Inheritance Tax does not just apply to those that are extremely wealthy, it is a tax that is charged on the value of property (all of a deceased’s property or assets) when someone dies. Inheritance Tax can be reduced or even eliminated

with proper estate planning. The death of a loved one can be very

overwhelming and so I have included some frequently asked questions to help you:

How long does it take to get money from a Will after someone dies?

This can vary according to the complexity of each Estate. An Attorney, preferably someone specialising in deceased estates, will endeavour to make this process as quick and efficient as possible. An average case takes between 3 – 6 months.

What happens if I am owed money by someone who has died?

Personal debts can be repaid from the Estate of the deceased if the loan was put in writing. Dealing with business debts can be complicated and it is best to seek advice from an Attorney on this matter.

What are the legal requirements to ensure that a Will is valid?

• It must be made by a person who is 18 years old or over.

• It must be made voluntarily and without pressure from any other person.

• It must be made by a person who is of sound mind meaning that person is fully aware of the nature of the document and aware of all the assets stipulated and the identity of the people who will inherit these assets.

• It must be signed on each page by the person making the Will in the presence of two witnesses who must also sign the Will (witnesses must not be beneficiaries).

Don’t put off writing or updating your will. Do it today! Determine the distribution of your assets now to ensure the fulfilment of your very last wishes.

18 MOTORING 25 March - 7 April 2015 IN P R IN T , O N A IR O N L IN E

BMW Motorrad SA has launched the 2015 S1000RR. While retaining all of its predecessors’ sporty character, BMW said it had paid particular attention to designing the bike to be even more rider-friendly.

BMW has made the bike lighter, shedding four kg to weigh in at 204kg wet. In the engine department the intake system now has shorter intake lengths, a larger air box and full ride-by-wire.To keep the power in check, the BMW has three ‘Riding’ modes (Rain, Sport, Race) as standard; Riding Mode Pro,

which adds Slick and User modes, the latter being configurable to the rider’s preferences, is optional.

The Pro mode also adds launch control and a pits-lane speed limiter. Launch Control, which is only available in Slick mode, works like this: with the bike

stationary and the engine idling, you press the start button for more than three seconds (a light on the instrument panel ignites when ready).

You then open the throttle all the way, which lets the bike rev to 9000rpm and let go the clutch when you’re ready to go. Once the bike reaches 70km/h the rev limiter is deactivated. The launch control is disengaged as soon as third gear is selected or the banking angle exceeds 30 degrees.

There’s an improved version of the electronic Dynamic Damping Control, familiar from the HP4, as an ex-works option. The bike features race ABS and a seven-step traction control system. Gear Shift Assist Pro, BMW-speak for its quick-shifter, is also available as an ex-works option.

Among all the performance bias, the RR has a rather unusual feature – cruise control, the first to be fitted on a superbike.

Traction control is almost seamless and the same applies to the DDC – it is hard to comment on it because you never really feel it working, other than the perception that the road surface is a lot smoother than you remember it.

BMW calls the S1000RR the safest superbike on the road. With its combination of almost flawless handling, huge stopping power and competent electronic rider aids, the RR makes an average rider look good and a good rider look brilliant.

The S1000RR is very fast, a pleasure to ride, and easy to like, and it can be yours for R213 050.

FEEL LIKE BOND, JAMES BOND, IN YOUR ASTON MARTIN

JAMES BOND'S FAVOURITE CAR-MAKER HAS UNVEILED THE RADICAL NEW FAMILY-FRIENDLY ASTON MARTIN DBX AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Does Aston Martin know something we don't? At the Geneva Motor Show this week James Bond's favourite car-maker unveiled a radical new family and female-friendly Aston Martin.

Bosses at the British luxury sports and supercar firm say the new electric-powered, two-door 'crossover' prototype, called the DBX is aimed squarely at attracting well-heeled young families.

The number of sports cars the firm is ever likely to sell is capped at around 7,000 a year — and currently only around 4,000 a year are sold — but demand by rich families for flexible sports utility vehicles that carry children and kit is soaring.

Aston Martin chief designer Marek Reichman says: 'We wanted to produce a more family and female-friendly car and this is the result.' The DBX includes an integrated child seat placed permanently between the two main rear seats, a special compartment for women's shoes, an out-of-sight area to keep precious items from prying eyes when parked, and easy-exit seats and doors that take account of those women wearing pencil skirts.

Softer interior fabrics — including velvet-like nubuck leather — replace harsher 'masculine' wood and metal trims to create a 'cocooning ambience' . Solar panels on the rear window generate power to maintain a constant temperature inside the vehicle

when it is parked.Although the car unveiled is an all-electric 4x4

with four separate motors at each wheel, the final production version is set to be a four-door petrol-electric hatchback crossover.
