RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY INTEGRITY [email protected] 1 THURSDAY 16 JUNE 2016 TERM 2 | WEEK 8 From the Principal’s Desk I hope you all had a lovely long weekend and enjoyed some time with family and friends. This week has seemed incredibly busy as it has been shorter, still lots to get through before the end of the term. Year 5 left for their excursion on Tuesday morning and are having a great time. They will be back on Friday afternoon. Year 4 returned on Friday and had an amazing time on their trip. They all particularly enjoyed their sleepover in Underwater World. Thank you to all the staff that organise and attend these excursions. Not something we have to do, but we do as the children gain so much from the experiences. If you have not had an opportunity to say thank you to the staff for the experiences they provided please find time to do so. A simple thank you makes all the preparations and lack of sleep worthwhile for the staff. Visiting Show Next week our school will have a visiting show that many families already paid for at the start of the year. If you have not paid and would like your child to attend you will need to send in payment before Monday. Notes have been sent home to the relevant families. In addition, we will have an Olympian visiting the school next Tuesday. Jacqui Lachmann won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She now lives in Lennox Head with her family. She will be speaking to some students next week when she visits the school. Sporting Success Congratulations to the boys who travelled to Zone Rugby trials on Tuesday. From all reports you all did an amazing job. Congratulations to Jedd Windle, Campbell Ross, Jai Glindeman and Tyrel Kelly who were successful in being selected in the Far North Coast team. The boys will now travel to Grafton in week 10 to trial for the North Coast PSSA team which will play in the State Championships in Mudgee later in the year. Good luck boys. Good luck to Brianna Watkins and Jett Beck who will compete at the Regional Cross Country on Friday. Art Show Don't forget that the class artworks are still available to make a bid on until next week. All paintings were featured in last week’s newsletter; they can still be viewed in the office area. The highest bid currently on one of the paintings is $151.00! So don’t be afraid to bid high, you could secure yourself an excellent piece of artwork for your house and in turn raise much needed funds for your child’s school. We will announce the successful bidders in the newsletter next week. Morning Tea - Merit/Honour/Distinction Students This will take place next Wednesday. All eligible students have received permission notes today regarding this. Please ensure you return these to the office by early next week so you are able to attend. Have a great weekend. Library News Donations Thank you so much to Sahana Marr in 1/2W for a cash donation to the library. Thanks also to Mila Garcia Lyon for donating books to the library. Book Fair Mark it on your calendar!! Our school book fair will commence on Thursday 28 July. On sale will be books, pencils, rubbers, posters etc. The school library receives 30% commission from all sales. The book fair is provided by Ashton Scholastic. Book Parade Another event to mark on the calendar - our annual book parade will be held on Wednesday 10 August. It will commence at 10.00am. The order of classes parading will be sent home closer to the event in case you can only pop in for a short time. The children come to school dressed up as their favourite character from a book. Some ideas are Superman, Batman, Pippi Longstocking, Doctor Dog, Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, soccer players, rodeo rider, cowboy, bushranger, soldier, nurse, fairy or a witch to name a few. Get your thinking caps on over the holidays. Writers Festival This event is on early next term on Wednesday 3 August. Children who are attending this need to be at school early as the bus departs at 8.45am sharp! CWA Competition Competition closes this Friday 17 June. All entries to Mrs Blair. Library Bags I did mention this in the last newsletter but I am reminding parents to encourage all children to use a library bag to protect books in their school bags even if it is a plastic shopping bag! Update New School Students beginning school in 2017 will finish school in 2030. It is difficult to imagine what their world will look like. Trends lead us to believe that it is unlikely to be anything like the past. Therefore, equipping our young people with the qualities they need to navigate and shape uncertain futures has never been more important. Learning is: • For all children (not just the richest, poorest, or best-behaved).

• About learning deeply with passion and commitment about things that matter in the world. • Developing the core knowledge, skills and mind-sets needed for future success. We will achieve this through active engagement of our community with learning at the centre of all we do. We will work collaboratively with our school community to create flexible, adaptable, independent and civic minded young people. We will focus on the personalisation of learning for all and we will stretch and challenge our students so that they build the skills of resilience needed for success. This week we held a series of workshops with executive staff from both schools, parents from Ballina High, Southern Cross and Ballina Public students from Ballina Public School. The purpose of the workshops is to gather the concerns and questions around the transition of Ballina High School to the Southern Cross site for the start of 2017. We are meeting with Teven Tintenbar parents and students next week and will hold another meeting for Southern Cross parents next Tuesday afternoon from 5.30 – 6.30pm in the Southern Cross library. These concerns and questions will be collated and responses prepared for publication in the next newsletter. Remember if you have any questions or concerns you can contact me on 66860503 or email [email protected]
