STOKES VALLEYHome to a compact network of tracks that can be linked together to create one big loop, you can spend as little as 30 minutess or a whole day exploring a range of native and exotic environments. Whilst many of the tracks are challenging, there is something for all fitness levels, and many lead onto the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) Track. Toilets are centrally located at the Stokes Valley shops.
1 KINGSLEY STREET > 45 mins to ECNZ Track
EASY
The Kingsley Street Reservoir is close to the track entrance, follow the Kingsley Street Firebreak either to the ECNZ Track or the Hororeka-Kingsley Loop. Easy walking or mountain biking.
2 TAWHAI STREET > one hour to ECNZ Track
HARD
Passes through mature Beech/Kamahi forest and native ferns. A walking track before progressing into a route. As it climbs very steeply to the ECNZ Track enjoy a break half way up and admire the view. A gut buster!
3 KAMAHI STREET > one hour to ECNZ Track
HARD
Tramping track that passes through regenerating native bush. Track steep and slippery in places and follows the creek bed before winding up to the ECNZ Track. Enjoy stunning views of the Wellington region. Do not attempt after long periods of wet weather.
4 OLD SOIL BUREAU TRACK > 50 mins
EASY
Well-formed track runs from Shaftsbury Grove to Eastern Hutt Road, through retired farmland and scrub suitable for exercising dogs. Easy mountain biking.
5 HOROEKA STREET SCENIC RESERVE
EASY
Start at 17 Hororeka Street, three different loop walks can be enjoyed, from a 45 minute easy walk, to a three-hour challenging tramp. The lower loops follow a hand-dug 100-year old Bridle trail through an ecologically significant area.
6 STOKES VALLEY ROAD TRACK > one hour to ECNZ Track
HARD
From the end of Stokes Valley Road this track climbs through Beech forest to regenerating native bush before arriving at the ECNZ track. Visitors to this area may also like to check out the Stokes Valley Monastery tracks. The track also drops down to the Old Soil Bureau Track.
EASTERN HILLS AND FIREBREAKThe Eastern Hills run from Upper Hutt to Wainuiomata, with many tracks running off the ECNZ Track. The Eastern Hills are used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers alike. The tracks at the top offer stunning views, but are exposed to all weather conditions and can be very hot in summer.
7 TOWAI TRIG / ECNZ TRACK
EASY
The 4WD track can be followed as far as Upper Hutt. A one-hour return walk to the Towai Trig offers stunning views. Accessible from the top of Wainuiomata Hill Road, and connects with many of the Eastern Hills tracks.
8 RATA STREET LOOP TRACK > one hour
MODERATE
Challenging tramping track that follows a creek bed for 600m, enjoy great views over Naenae and surrounding hills. Connection to ECNZ Track is a rough, steep 40 minute walk.
9 WILKIE CRESCENT FIREBREAK > 40 mins one-way
HARD
A steep climb from Wilkie Crescent to the ECNZ Track, with views of Naenae and the surrounding hills. Return the same way. A gut buster!
10 SUMMIT ROAD FIREBREAK > 40 mins one-way
HARD
Steep in places as you climb to the ECNZ Track. Well used by runners, walkers and cyclists, track enjoys great views of the Hutt Valley.
11 HAYWARD SCENIC RESERVE / TE WHITI FIREBREAK > one hour to ECNZ Track
MODERATE/HARD
One-hour to main ridge, 40 minute side loops. Climb up through mature native bush as you make your way up to the ECNZ Track. Great views of the Hutt Valley and Wellington harbour.
12 UPPER FITZHERBERT TRACK > 15 mins one-way
MODERATE
Accessed from Wainuiomata, this walking and mountain biking track passes through gorse and regenerating native forest before joining the ECNZ Track.
13 KONINI FIREBREAK > one hour one-way
HARD
4WD track leads to the reservoir before winding up to the ECNZ Track. This challenging track is popular for horse riding, walking and mountain biking with good views of Wainuiomata and the Hutt Valley.
14 SPOONHILL > one hour one-way
MODERATE
Tramping track from Parkway Playground through Manuka, Beech and Kamahi forest to ECNZ Track. This track is part of the Wainuiomata Trail Project, so watch out for fast flying mountain bikes.
WAINUIOMATAWainuiomata is bordered by native bush and is a haven for walking and cycling. Tracks from Wainuiomata provide access to the East Harbour Regional Park, the Eastern Firebreak tracks and a series of DOC tracks. Many of the tracks included form part of the East Harbour Regional Park.
15 LEES GROVE TRACK > 45 mins to Lowry Trig
HARD
A popular track on the Wainuiomata side of the regional park, Lees Grove Track leads up to Lowry Trig. Begins beyond the last house on Lees Grove and joins Rata Ridge Track.
16 FERN GULLY TRACK > 15 mins to Rata Ridge Track
MODERATE
Entrance between 19 and 19B, Gardiner Grove. Cross a paddock, then a small creek, turn sharp right before entering an extensive area of tree ferns, and then join Rata Ridge Track.
17 RATA RIDGE TRACK > 75 mins to Lowry Trig
HARD
Entrance opposite 53 Stanley Street. Follows zigzag leading to a firebreak before joining the Fern Gully Track after 20 mins. Climb through Beech forest to link with Lees Grove Track before the Lowry Trig.
18 ZIG ZAG TRACK > 30 mins to Rata Ridge Track
MODERATE/HARD
Steep entrance north of 11B Fraser Street. Zigzag’s uphill before joining the Rata Ridge Track. Mild gut buster!
19 ROTARY PARK BLACK CREEK > 10 mins
EASY
Gentle walk. Entrance off main road along grassy stop banks. Spring daffodil display along river at Rotary Park.
20 HINE ROAD RESERVE > 15 mins
EASY
Entrance at end of Hine Road, follows the Wainuiomata River around Richard Prouse Park to the Main Road. Access to DOC Tracks (Whakanui and Mt McKerrow) in the Rimutaka Forest Park.
21 HARRY TODD RESERVE TRACK > 30 mins
MODERATE
Challenging walk along a tramping track which passes through Pines, Beech forest, ferns and regenerating natives. Views of Wainuiomata and Moores Valley from lookout.
22 PURIRI STREET TRACK > 30 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE
Tramping track beginning at the edge of a large grassed area beside Wainuiomata Road. Ascends through mixed forest types to the Main Ridge Track.
EASTERN BAYSEast Harbour Regional Park is a contrast of native forest and rocky coastline. East Harbour’s sheltered valleys and sweeping bays offer beautiful bush and exhilarating views over Wellington Harbour and headlands.

23 HOWARD ROAD TRACK > one hour return
MODERATE
The track begins with a climb from the reservoir, then follows the ridge for a half hour up to Wainuiomata Hill lookout.
24 CHEVIOT ROAD TRACK > 45 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE
Winds through a mix of native forest before joining Howard Road Track after 30 mins. Cheviot Road to Ngamatau Road: cross a small creek before turning left, then head uphill. Exit near tennis courts in Ngamatau Road.
25 DILLON STREET TRACK > 15 mins
MODERATE
Challenging short walk offers great harbour views, a plaque marks the site of the old Jackson Cottage. Track exits at tennis courts and end of Dillon Street.
26 KAITAWA TRACK > 60 mins one-way
HARD
Narrow, challenging tramping track, entrance is at end of Kaitawa Street. Good panoramas of York Bay and Petone. Occasionally the native orchids put on a fine display. Car parking is limited.
27 FERRY ROAD TRACK > 45 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE
Challenging walk offers views of Wellington Harbour and Eastbourne. The entrance passes through regenerating native bush before climbing into Beech forest.
28 MAIN RIDGE TRACK > 2 ½ hours
MODERATE
Track is well-used by runners and walkers and links with many of the tracks in the Regional Park. Main Ridge Track follows the ridge through Beech and Rata forest from Days Bay to Lowry Trig, then onto the Wainuiomata Hill Lookout.
29 KORIMAKO WALK > 45 mins
MODERATE/HARD
Beginning at Williams Park, the track follows the creek before turning left as you sidle up to Korimako Road. Follow the road to the end where the track becomes more challenging as you pass through Pine plantation and Beech forest up to the main ridge.
30 KERERU ROAD > 65 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE/HARD
Entrance is at the Korimako Circular Walk. Continue past the Korimako signpost, past the old weir and across the creek, where the challenging track climbs steeply up through Beech and Rata forest, to the Main Ridge Track.
31 MACKENZIE TRACK > 40 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE/HARD
Entrance off Muritai Road, near Eastbourne shops. The beginning is steep as the track passes through regenerating bush before entering Beech forest. Track continues downstream before intersecting with Kowhai Street Track and onto the Butterfly Creek Picnic area.
32 MURITAI PARK > 35 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE/HARD
Entrance is between 259 and 261 Muritai Road. The track follows a good grade and links with the Mackenzie Track descending to the valley floor. Attractive bush, good views and well-graded.
33 KOWHAI STREET TRACK > 20 mins to Main Ridge Track
MODERATE
Steep rocky trail to Butterfly Creek links with the Mackenzie and Bus Barn tracks. Enjoyable but challenging, steep and limited parking at top of Kowhai Street.
34 BUS BARN TRACK > 45 mins to Kowhai Track
MODERATE/HARD
Tramping track, that winds steeply upwards through gorse and regenerating bush. Good views of the South Island and the entrance to Wellington Harbour. Near the top, the trail passes through native bush before linking with the Kowhai Street Track, and then on to the Butterfly Creek Picnic site.
35 PENCARROW COAST ROAD
EASY
Follow the flat coastal gravel road to the lighthouses at Pencarrow Point (two hours) for good views of the Wellington Heads and the South Island. The Coast Road is great for cycling.
Further around, Lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera (2 ½ hours or longer, if you wish to explore the tracks in this area) are of national conservation significance.
CENTRAL HUTT AND PETONEHutt River Trail is an easy scenic walk and cycle path which is great for the family. It allows access to the river for swimming, fishing and kayaking, and links with the Rimutaka Rail Trail.
36 HUTT RIVER TRAIL
EASY
The 29km trail starts at Hikoikoi Reserve on Petone’s Marine Parade, but you can enter at many points, including the five bridges across the river in Hutt City. Playgrounds, parks and toilets are dotted along the trail.
The Hutt River Trail is a joint project between Greater Wellington Regional Council, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council and the Hutt Valley Rotary Clubs.
37 PETONE FORESHORE / HIKOIKOI
EASY
Follow Petone beach along this family-friendly trail from any point along the Foreshore. The trail leads on to the footbridges over the Western Hutt Road and SH2 to Galbraiths Gully and Frank Cameron Park and to the Hutt River Trail through Hikoikoi Reserve.
BELMONT REGIONAL PARKBreath-taking views and bush-clad valleys make Belmont Regional Park a favourite open space. Located between Porirua and the Hutt Valley the park features the historic Korokoro Dam, World War II ammunition stores and the original old coach road from Lower Hutt to Porirua.
Access via Cornish Street in Petone, Oakleigh Street in Normandale, Stratton Street in Normandale, Hill Road in Belmont, Kaitangata Crescent in Kelson, and Dry Creek near the SH2 and SH58 intersection.
A farm code sign identifies where dogs are not permitted in the park.
Please note, a key is required for horse riding in Belmont Regional Park, contact the Upper Hutt Depot on 526 4133.
Dogs are allowed on non-farmland areas of tracks 42, 44 and 45.

38 STREAM WALK > 30 mins
EASY
Ideal for all ages, and suitable for mountain buggies. Park at the end of Stratton Street and take a gentle walk by the pond and over several footbridges upstream and back around to the car park. Purpose built platforms and picnic tables along the route.
39 WATERFALL TRACK > one hour
MODERATE
This pleasant scramble follows Dry Creek from the park entrance at Stratton Street through native bush towards a small waterfall and back again. Expect wet feet as you cross several streams. Flat grassy areas near the start are ideal for picnics. Great for young family groups, especially in summer.
40 KOROKORO DAM LOOP > one hour
MODERATE
Takes in the historic Korokoro Dam, regenerating and mature native bush. Start at the Oakleigh Street entrance to the park, at the track nearest the information kiosk.
41 KOROKORO STREAM TRACK > three hours
EASY
This evenly graded track follows an old steel pipeline from the Cornish Street entrance upstream through mature and regenerating bush to the Korokoro Dam. The dam was the first gravity fed concrete dam in New Zealand, return same way or exit on Oakleigh Street.
42 BOULDER HILL TRACK > two hours
MODERATE
A scenic climb to Boulder Hill, starting at the Kaitangata Crescent, Kelson entrance to the park. The track passes through regenerating scrub and native bush, giving good views of the Hutt Valley. Return the same way. No dogs.
43 KILMISTER TRACK > three hours
MODERATE
Starting at the Hill Road entrance, this loop track gives panoramic views of the lower valley, before following the main stream valley up to Belmont Road. Turn left to climb, passing the WWII munitions magazines on the way back to Hill Road. Walk crosses several streams and is closed Aug-Nov for lambing. No dogs.
44 OLD COACH ROAD > three hours
MODERATE
The original route between Normandale and Pauatahanui, the Old Coach Road starts at the top of Normandale Road and crosses Belmont Regional Park via a road sized track. It finishes at Belmont Road, off SH58. No dogs.
45 PUKE ARIKI TRAVERSE > seven hours
HARD
A rewarding full day walk traverses the length of Belmont Regional Park. Starting at the Dry Creek ‘Haywards’ entrance the track rises to Boulder Hill, along farmland to the Airstrip, Round Knob, Cannons Head and Belmont Trig. The track then descends into the Korokoro Valley and exits at Cornish St in Petone. No dogs.
WESTERN HILLS AND PERCY SCENIC RESERVEBelow Belmont Regional Park there are a series of tracks and trails dotted throughout the Western Hills. Percy Scenic Reserve is a highlight; this compact reserve enjoys a mix of garden areas, tracks, lawns and historic plant collections, just off SH2.

Percy Scenic Reserve contains numerous short loop tracks to suit all ages and abilities.
Track exits from Percy Scenic Reserve include Barberry Grove, Acacia Avenue and Maungaraki Road. You can also complete a loop circuit to return to Percy Reserve via George Gee Drive, Frank Cameron Park, or Stanhope Grove. Good parking at Stanhope Grove and on Dowse Drive.
47 GALBRAITHS GULLY > 25 mins
HARD
The Wet Track entrance is at the bottom of Korokoro Road and follows the creek bed up to London Road. Alternatively the Dry Loop Track is 15 mins and follows the ridge, bypassing most of the stream track. Galbraiths Gully links into Percy Scenic Reserve.
48 FRANK CAMERON PARK > 30 mins
EASY
From London Road, the Frank Cameron Park Tracks lead to Percy Scenic Reserve and Stanhope Grove. A picnic shelter and large car park offer views of the Eastern Hills and Hutt Valley.
49 MULBERRY STREET > 25 mins one-way
MODERATE
Provides access from the bottom of Dowse Drive to Mulberry Street. Follow the spillway and gently climb through the pines and regenerating native forest, track is steep in places.
50 JUBILEE PARK > 30 mins
EASY
Access and parking is available just above Normandale overbridge. The Minoh Friendship House is situated in the park. There are loop tracks through native and exotic vegetation. Gain access into the park via Gaskill Grove and Harbour View Road.
51 PANORAMA PATHWAY > 10 mins
EASY
A well-graded walking track providing pedestrian access from Normandale Road to Panorama Grove, linking the Harbour View and Normandale suburbs.
52 MATUI STREET TRACK > 15 mins
EASY
Short walking track in Tirohanga which links Matuhi Street and Avonlea Grove through native palms and ferns.
53 BERTRAM RESERVE > 10 mins one-way
MODERATE
Pleasant walk through native ferns from Groundsell Crescent to Palm Grove, passing through a small stand of Redwoods.
54 PARK-HILL TRACK > 15 mins
EASY
Short walking track between Park Road and Hill Road following a well-formed track, playground at Park Road entrance.
55 PARK MEADOWBANK TRACK > 20 mins
MODERATE
Track runs between Park Road Reservoir and the Meadowbank Drive Reserve. Flat in places and popular with dog walkers, but with a steep uphill section closer to the reserve. Track not suitable for cyclists.
HUTT CITY TRACKS AND TRAILSLower Hutt offers a wide range of tracks and walks for all abilities. With the Belmont and East Harbour Regional Parks, the Hutt River Trail and Percy Scenic Reserve being among the highlights.
Hutt City Council manages around 3,000 hectares of parks, reserves, bush-clad hills, beaches, walkways and tracks and playgrounds for the kids.
Respect the environment, leaving it as you find it, take litter home and keep to the track.
Keep dogs under control and clean up after them.
Control speed when cycling or horse riding.
