Learning Centre Leaders’ Newsletter 2nd November 2018 Early Years Learning Centre We have had a very busy and exciting return to term 4 in the Early Years. We have had three new enrolments this term so far. Throughout week three and four, all Early Years students have participated in their week long swimming program. We had fantastic parent and allied health support to ensure students had access to this wonderful program.

For one night during week 3 we had 37 students attend the Lady Northcote camp in Glenmore. The students and staff had an amazing time participating in geocaching, archery, giant swing and low ropes course. The students demonstrated fantastic independence and resilience to go beyond their

comfort zones throughout this time.

A reminder that Monday is a curriculum day and Tuesday is the public holiday so students are not required at school on these two days.

We are very excited to see the school’s new habitat being constructed this week. This design is based on Group 7’s design entry that was voted the best by their peers! Check it out on display in the main office as well as photos and videos of the habitat being constructed.

Camp experiences....

PLT2....EYPLT2 has had a wild ride so far in Term 4. We started with a bang with classes visiting either the aquarium or the zoo and had an absolute blast seeing the habitats we had been studying in real life! We also had a blast splashing around in the pool over the last two weeks. As part of our inquiry participating in the Habitat Heroes program we are gearing up to plant our garden after designing it last term. With an action packed few weeks ahead we look forward to seeing all the growth the students have made throughout the year!

Middle Years Learning Centre LeaderStudents in the Middle Years have been participating in the intensive swimming program in weeks 2 - 5. This has been very successful with all classrooms spending five sessions in the pool. Multimedia has a condensed program of three days (due to the public holiday and report writing day) therefore they will spend longer at the pool. Teachers and students have had a wonderful time so far!

BRC and CRC transitions have recommenced in Term 4 with students transitioning to BRC on Fridays week 2, week 3, week 4 and week 6. Students are transitioning to CRC on Wednesdays and Fridays week 3 - week 10. This planned intensive transition program is working well to best prepare students and teachers for their 2019 classrooms and provides opportunities for staff and students alike to begin to become familiar with each other and the new environment. Thank you for all of the parent preferences that have been received, these will be considered for student class placements in 2019.

The Multimedia Genius session for Adobe Have a voice presented their film at ACMI film premiere in Federation Square along with seven other mainstream primary and secondary schools across Victoria. The film was of a very high calibre and it was acknowledged that Warringa Park had been involved in Adobe Voices since the commencement of the project in 2015. This is a great opportunity for our students to have a voice and share this beyond the school community, well done!

The Habitat Heroes Garden has commenced construction in Week 4 and it is a very exciting part of this Semesters Inquiry. Students across the school will be planning a grand opening celebration of the Habitat at the end of the term with students showcasing their learning and contributions to the garden.

Groups 39, 40, 41 & 42Wow, the weeks are flying by! PLT2 have had a great time these past two weeks with swimming, telling time for maths and great STEM activities.

BRC NewsCongratulations to the students who participated in the SmartHER Steam challenge at the Wyndham Tech School last Friday 19th October. All students who attended were incredibly inspiring sharing their idea to create community access for road trauma victims. The girls presented their idea clearly and were able to confidently answer the Judges tough questions. These students will receive awards at the BRC assembly on Tuesday.

Camp forms have been sent home with students as well as what funding each student has available. Camp is a wonderful opportunity for students and the year 8 and 9 camp will be a great celebration of a year of hard work. Please also keep your eyes open for the 2019 Year 10 urban camp which will take place in Term 1 of 2019.

Bike camp will be taking place in week 5. Students are very excited to participate in the ride and test their riding knowledge that they have worked on during their sport elective. Thank you to all staff who support these camps.

We have had wonderful visits from the main campus each Friday with the 2019 WPS transitions taking place for half of the day. All transitions have been smooth, and students

have settled into classrooms well. Students are already making friends and it’s been great to see the BRC students providing tours for the new students.

The BRC market day will take place on 6th December at WPS please save the date in your diary as we would real appreciate as much parent support as possible.

VCAL NewsA new radio cew started this term with a training session and several live shows so far. The radio programs is a great platform for students to practice and demonstrate their oracy skills.

CRC NewsThis week we welcome Sue Thomas to our team at CRC. Sue will be working in the office in the administration role Monday-Wednesday. Please look out for her friendly face when you visit! On Tuesday 13th November and Tuesday the 20th November we are inviting new parents in 2019 to join us in the café for a morning tea and tour. You will be receiving a note home with your child this week, and we would love to see you. Also for those parents who would prefer a night information session we will be having one in week 8 – the date still to be confirmed (possibly the 28th).

Are you the parent/ carer of an adolescent aged 12 to 18 with a disability who was

offered immunisations at a specialist school in Victoria in the last 12 months?

If yes, we would like to hear from you and your child about their experience. Your views will assist us to better understand and improve the immunisation experience of young people with

disabilities, and may help us inform state-wide immunisation policy.

Participation in the research study would involve an interview about your experience and perceptions of the immunisation process and the vaccines offered to your child through the school immunisation program. This would take 30 to 45 minutes at a

time and location convenient to you.

We would also be interested in talking to your child about their immunisation experience. This would take between 5 and 20 minutes and can be conducted at the

same time as your interview with you in attendance.

You can participate whether or not your child received their adolescent immunisations.

This is independent non-government commissioned research led by a Nurse

Consultant in Developmental Disabilities at The Royal Children’s Hospital, who is undertaking a PhD at The University of Melbourne.

The Program Triple P Stepping Stones has been developed for parents of children aged 2-12 years with a disability or at risk of developing behaviour problems. You’ll meet with a small group of parents who also have a child with a disability, delay or where there are concerns.

Triple P Stepping Stones can help you:

Manage problem behaviours / developmental issues common in children with disabilities

Encourage behaviour you like

Cope with stress

Develop a close relationship with your child

Teach your child new skills

Independence Australia is a company that supplies a range of incontinence aids. I encourage you to visit their website and phone them directly to discuss your needs. I do have a range of samples, feel free to come in and review them and discuss your needs.

Camp Medication: I review and organise all camp medication. For this reason I need all Medication Authority Forms (Green Camp Forms) to be returned as soon as possible once camp paperwork has been distributed. I request that all medication be handed into me directly via reception at least 2-3 days before camp. I encourage you to obtain extra medication close to camp and provide me the original packaging. If your child has a lot of medication please request a webster pack from your pharmacist.

Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me.

Please note: • All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box. • If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.
