Learning Centre Leaders’ Newsletter 10th March 2017

Mon 13th March NO students at school

Middle Years Team Leader Middle Years students have participated in the school swimming program this week with enthusiasm. It was great to see almost all of our students getting involved and most students were used to the routine of heading down to AquaPulse for their session and coming back ready to continue their learning. Thank you to all of the parent helpers who volunteered their time to assist students at the pool. Over the next two weeks the Middle Years teachers will be conducting Student Support Group (SSG) meetings with parents/carers. This is an important opportunity for teachers and parents to share a student’s Individual Learning Plan and discuss the way that both parties can support the student’s learning throughout 2017. If you are yet to make an appointment with your child’s teacher can you please do this as soon as possible. Teachers will always endeavour to make a time that suits families. All Middle Years teachers have been uploading student work onto our school SeeSaw app. I would like to encourage parents/carers to access your child’s SeeSaw page and see all of the excellent learning that students have been doing. The students love to share their work with family and they are especially excited when they see that parents have written a response on their page. This is an easily accessible way to engage in your child’s learning and ask them about their work. I would like to congratulate and welcome Joanne Brown as the Group 41 teacher for the remainder of 2017. Joanne stepped into the teaching position at the beginning of the year in a temporary role. Since then she has grown to know and highly respect her students and is doing a terrific job in engaging students in their learning. Alison Balchan, Middle Years Team Leader

Groups 22, 23, 24 & 25 Over the last two weeks our students have been busy consolidating their skills in Literacy and Numeracy. In Literacy students are employing the new and exciting strategies in Reading, they are engaging in reading new texts, learning new vocabulary and letters in fun and exciting ways. In Numeracy students are developing a deeper

understanding, using new strategies to solve problems, however, our focus is still on Numbers and Money. Students really enjoyed our Swimming Program. They also participated in Clean Up Australia Day and Sports Day last Friday. Through these programs they are learning to work together and becoming good citizens. This week’s literacy focus was the narrative of Finding Dory/ Drumming Donald. The students participated in activities involving a class made aquarium with sand, dyed water and plastic toy fish as a physical representation of the setting in which “Finding Dory” takes place. This week was swimming week and we couldn’t have been more proud of the effort our students have PLT1. The students were very enthusiastic and engaged in the activities at the swimming pool. We would like to thank the parents and volunteers who helped us during the week.

Multimedia Learning Centre Over the last two weeks, our students have been involved in lots of learning activities outside of the classroom. Last week we participated in Clean up Australia Day. The students were amazing and were so dedicated to helping to clean up rubbish. Our groups cleaned around the school and across the road at Woodville Oval. They filled up several bags of rubbish and made a big impact to the school and local area. Last Friday our students participated in the Whole School Sports Day here at Warringa. They were involved in various activities that included hurdles, obstacle courses, relay races and throwing activities. Our students showed great sportsmanship and effort for this event. Well done to the Green house for taking out the first place. This week our students have been attending the Swimming Program at Aqua Pulse. Our students have done a tremendous job of participating in this program. They were all very involved in the lessons provided and had a great time on Thursday and Friday on the water park and water slide. Thanks to all of the parents, teachers, support staff and most of all students for making swimming such an

enjoyable week. The results for the Student Representative Council (SRC) were announced at our assembly on Monday. We would like to thank and commend all of the students who put in an application. We had Marie come over to join our assembly and to be present while our students were told the results. The SRC is an important role and responsibility within the school valued by many people. Congratulations to the following students who

were successful in being voted onto the SRC: Green House: Hailu Tesfaye Blue House: Stephanie V Yellow House: Jayden B Red House: Rhys M Shortly Student Support Group (SSG) interview timeslots will be sent home to parents. Weeks 5 and 6 have been very busy for everyone at BRC! Teachers and students have been collaboratively working on creating individual CAPs plans with SSG meetings to follow in week 7 and 8. Girl Talk Guy Talk started in week 5 with an introductory lesson. Students learnt that there are no silly questions and completed a survey on safe relationships. In Mathematics, students have been learning about whole numbers, decimals and fractions and how to add them together. The have also been working hard on finding “friends of ten” and identifying number doubles. In English, students have been learning about refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, and the hardships they face - a part of the Y-Challenge BRC are taking part in this semester. Later Years Warringa Campus

Later Years students have enjoyed a splashing time practising their swimming skills at AquaPulse this week. We would like to thank Kacey for organising it, and running such a successful program. The swimming program has offered an array of learning experiences for our Later Years students not just in the pool but outside as well. These have included walking safely in groups, to and from the pool, demonstrating road safety, independently looking after their belongings and following the safety expectations at the swimming pool. Our students did a wonderful job representing our school so well done to you all. Students have been showing off their reading skills after our reading conferences are now underway. Teaching have been spending one to one time hearing students read, while setting them goals and skills to practice.

Last week students participated in Athletics days. We had a fun time competing against each other in our home colours,

balancing bean bags, running, jumping small hurdles and many more.

If you are a new student and have missed out on the immunisation program at other schools, please contact me to check that I have them on the list and have obtained their cards from their previous council. ATTENTION: PLEASE RETURN CARDS TO SCHOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Epilepsy Plans: Please ensure epilepsy plans are taken to your next Neurologist appointment and signed by the neurolo-gist and yourselves. I like to keep these plans as current and relevant as possible. If any student has a recent seizure please con-tact me, so I can update their plans. Asthma Plans: I handed out Asthma plans to all families who have students with Asthma at the end of last year. Please take to your GP and have them filled in and return to school as soon as possible. There are a number of plans that have not been returned. Toilet Training Workshop: The continence foundation will be conducting a parent workshop on Tuesday 21st March 2017 at 1pm-2:30pm. This workshop is an informal round table discussion about the steps required to toilet train children with special needs. It is a five step process which we as a school follow. Please register your attendance with reception, there is a maximum of 15 peo-ple per workshop. Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me. Please note:

All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.

If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier.

If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or to myself would be appreciated. Drink Bottles: In order to maximise students ’ fluid intake especially during the hotter weather, I encourage all parents to ensure their child brings a drink bottle to school. This enables staff to identify how much each child is drinking. Dehydration can contribute to: tiredness, fatigue, loss of concentration, abdominal pain (constipation), nausea & vomiting & dizzi-ness. Many of our students visit sick bay for these complaints. Results Warringa Park School Council Elections

An election was held for the six parent/carer positions on the Warringa Park School Council. The following candidates were successful: Rebecca Cross Clare Johnstone Nicole Rosen Lynda Stevenson Maree Triffett Darren Underwood We thank everyone for their participation in this important process and look forward to working with the Council in achieving the best results for our students. They are worth it.

Going on Camp?

If your student is going on a school camp (how exciting!) please ensure the following: 1. Let your bus chaperone know the dates

when your student will NOT be going on the bus so that the bus doesn’t wait for a student that is away on camp and

2. Check with the chaperone if your student’s camp baggage can go on the bus as many of our buses are NOT ABLE to accommodate the additional baggage that students need to take to camp. You will probably have to arrange to both drop off and pick up your student from school. This is an important safety issue for the buses.
