The University is operated under the control of the Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Northwest, Southern Idaho, and Wyoming districts of the Assemblies of God. All of these districts are represented on the University’s Board of Directors.

Mission Statement We, the people of Northwest University, carry the call of God by continually building a learning community dedicated to spiritual vitality, academic excellence, and empowered engagement with human need.

Core Values

The Mission of Northwest University, a Christian university affiliated with the Assemblies of God, is derived from the following core values:

Spiritual Vitality (Heart)

Moving together in personal relationship with Christ Jesus and knowledge of God’s calling, we dedicate ourselves to Spirit-filled service.

Practicing discipleship and worship with biblical faithfulness, we develop courage and character to meet the challenges of our world.

Crafting a diverse, lifelong community, we recognize the intrinsic worth and dignity of each individual and facilitate friendships and networks that reach out to welcome others in love.

Academic Excellence (Head)

Exploring all truth with scholarly excellence, we build a biblical worldview to prepare each other for service and leadership throughout the world.

Developing moral, spiritual, intellectual, and aesthetic values through the arts and sciences, we integrate faith, learning, and life.

Thinking critically, we aid one another in academic achievement and lifelong pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and skills.

Empowered Engagement (Hand) Growing holistically, we clarify and obey individual God-given callings.

Communicating and modeling the Gospel, we call people and communities to be reconciled to God and to each other.

Demonstrating Spirit-inspired compassion and creativity, we meet the needs of individuals, build communities, and care for creation.

Community Affirmation

Northwest seeks to relate Biblical Christianity to every area of life, both on and off campus: to academic disciplines, in the local community and in one’s personal life. It assumes that all members of the Northwest community desire meaningful involvement in the process of Christian higher education as they seek to express their faith in the context of an Assemblies of God University. Faculty and staff members commit themselves to be facilitators and learners in this educational endeavor. Students, by enrolling, join with them in accepting the responsibilities of membership in the community. http://www.northwestu.edu/catalog/ Since Northwest holds that the Scripture is the infallible rule for faith and conduct, the Bible will always be the authority in all matters pertaining to personal and corporate behavior. The University believes that its statement of faith and its statement of principles regarding behavior find their basis in the Bible. This affirmation attempts to provide a means to understanding the nature of this community of believing learners and to encourage a sincere commitment to it. We affirm the Lordship of Christ over all of life and thought; our responsibility to love God with all our being and our neighbors as ourselves; our obligation to seek righteousness, to practice justice in all situations, and to express mercy to all; our need to exercise Christian freedom responsibly and lovingly and our dependence on the empowering of the Holy Spirit if we are to faithfully fulfill what God requires. We affirm the Biblical description of attitudes and behavior unfitting for a Christian: “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like” (Gal. 5:19-21a, NIV). Through the help of the Holy Spirit we strive to allow none of these to be part of our behavior. We affirm also the Biblical description of attitudes and behavior fitting for a Christian: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal. 5:22-23a, NIV). We seek to maintain a vital relationship with the Spirit so that such attitudes and behavior will be evident among us. We seek to follow Christ’s example of unselfish love in our actions, attitudes, and relationships. We strive to maintain stewardship of body, mind, time, abilities, and resources. We strive to integrate corporate worship, personal faith, and intellectual growth. Attendance of the University chapel services and faithful attendance and support of a local church are integral parts of the process. Northwest recognizes that not all believers share the same standards in matters of behavior the Bible does not specifically address. As members of this community, however, we also recognize the importance of respecting the values and goals of the University and will, therefore, seek to conduct ourselves in a manner that will bring only credit to the gospel and to Northwest. Since we are also part of the larger society, and in order to “let our light shine out,” we will strive to maintain good community relations in respect to governing authorities, social activities and business dealings. This affirmation provides a positive and constructive framework to aid one’s personal development and for ongoing relationships with all other members of this community. We join with each other as we seek to live out this affirmation in a spirit of unity and openness, of helpfulness and caring.

Financial Information

Financial Policy The Department of Education of the Assemblies of God has set forth the following financial policy:

In order to improve our present educational institutions and to guarantee their future, each student is expected to reimburse the school for the full amount of his/her obligation on or before the close of each semester. No diplomas, certificates, degrees, or transcripts shall be expected or received until satisfactory payment is made for all school obligations.

All past due accounts must be settled with the Student Accounts Office prior to registration. First semester tuition is due at registration prior to the first class session. Tuition and fees are to be paid in full at registration each semester unless arrangements are made with the Student Accounts Coordinator prior to starting the new semester. Students may not be eligible to participate in graduation ceremonies until all accounts are paid in full. Financial indebtedness to the University will prevent the release of a student’s transcript and/or diploma. If a student is delinquent (as determined by the Promissory Note) in his/her Federal Perkins Student Loan, he/she will not be eligible to receive deferment, cancellation provisions, nor will academic transcripts and/or diplomas be released. Please contact the Student Accounts Office for details or refer to the following link for more information: http://eagle.northwestu.edu/departments/student-accounts/

Employer Assisted Payments (Tuition Reimbursement Plans) Some employers assist students with educational costs. If the student’s employer pays the University directly, some or all tuition payments may be deferred based on the timing and amount of assistance. Otherwise, if the employer reimburses the student for tuition, the student will be expected to pay at registration using one of the standard payment plans of the University. Employer Assisted Payments are still governed by the late fee policy. The University will provide any information that is requested or required by an employer to approve payment for tuition.

Student Financial Aid Students who wish to apply for financial aid (federal, state, or institutional) must complete the following documents six weeks prior to the beginning of the first semester of enrollment and each new school year thereafter:

Northwest University LEAP Financial Aid Application: http://eagle.northwestu.edu/finaid/resources/fa_nu_app.pdf

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): www.fafsa.gov

See link for more information about federal and state resources for financial aid: http://eagle.northwestu.edu/finaid/

Northwest University Institutional Aid Unique to the adult education (LEAP) program at Northwest University, Bridge the Gap scholarships may be awarded to students (minimum 6 credits per semester) who demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Institutional aid is subject to eligibility after federal, state, and outside resources are considered. Bridge the Gap scholarship funds cover the residual tuition, if any, not met by all other sources and cannot be used to supplant or replace any other benefits, including federal loan programs for which the student meets eligibility requirements. To ensure availability of these institutional scholarships, students are encouraged to apply early for financial aid.

Veterans Benefits The LEAP Program is approved for Veteran’s Administration (VA) benefits. Contact Northwest University’s VA Coordinator at [email protected] or 425-889-5263. Additional education benefit information can be found on the VA website at www.gibill.va.gov.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) must be maintained to remain eligible to receive financial aid. See guidelines below.

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 for juniors/seniors; 1.9 for sophomores; 1.7 for freshmen.

Students are required to complete at least 67% of the credit hours attempted each semester.

If a student completes less than 67% of the credit hours attempted, he/she will be placed on financial aid warning for unsatisfactory academic progress.

Students who do not successfully complete six (6) credits during one term will have their financial aid suspended for the next term.

Students who complete less than 67% of credits attempted, or have a cumulative GPA under the value stated earlier for a given class standing for two consecutive semesters, will be suspended from financial aid for the following term.

Students can appeal a first financial aid suspension to the Financial Aid Committee for possible restoration of financial aid and a status change to financial aid probation for one semester if there are extraordinary circumstances that affected their academic progress. A formal appeal application must be submitted in a timely manner. Further information may be obtained at: http://eagle.northwestu.edu/finaid/.

Academic Probation/Suspension Academic probation places a student under special supervision for the purpose of providing opportunity for academic improvement. This step is taken when a student’s grade point average falls below a 2.0 level. Students are required to have a 2.0 cumulative GPA for graduation and must pass all courses with at least a D-. When a probationary student’s cumulative GPA rises above these minimum levels, he/she is removed from probation.

Academic Policies and Procedures

Academic Status Full-time status is defined as a course load of 12 semester hours or more. Students who choose a course load of 18 credits or beyond are charged above and beyond the full time tuition rate. The recommended credit load per semester is 12-17 credits at Northwest University. Students must file a Request for Extra Credits Form if their course load will reach 18 or more credits. Click link for form: Extra Credit Request

Academic Advising Students are assigned to an academic advisor upon entry into the adult education program. The Advisor’s signature will be required on most academic forms (Add/Drop Form, Course Withdrawal Form, etc.). Acceptance into a cohort is contingent upon completion of the General Education requirements. Ministry Leadership/Pastoral Ministries majors are required to complete a separate application for the School of Ministry. Students are responsible for developing a degree plan with their advisor. Students are encouraged to contact their advisors or the Extended Education office to schedule an advising appointment prior to each semester in order to plan and monitor their progress towards degree completion.

Academic Appeal A student is expected to relate to the University’s standards and to the individual professor’s classroom regulations and course expectations in a positive way. Students must be courteous toward the professor and refrain from conduct which disrupts the learning process. If a student has a grievance against a professor with regard to a grade received, a discipline received for academic dishonesty, or other teacher action affecting the student’s standing, the student shall first respectfully speak to the professor about it (as Jesus instructed in Matthew 18:15: “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you”). If an acceptable resolution is not reached between the student and the professor, or if the student finds the professor unapproachable the student should speak to the Dean of the school or college in which the professor teaches. Again, if an acceptable resolution is not reached, or if the professor is the Dean, the student may appeal to the Provost. Click on link for Student Petition for General Academic Matters form: Academic Appeal Form

Adding and Dropping a Class Drop Policy:

Students must drop a course within six days of the first class session. Drop forms received after this deadline will be considered as a Course Withdrawal.

Adding Courses:

Due to the accelerated nature of our courses, the Office of Extended Education recommends that students register for courses a minimum of one week prior to the first class session. This approach allows students time to address textbook readings and assignments prior to the first class sessions. Additional time may be required for students who have not yet acquired the course textbook(s).

Page 16: Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) · NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY Office of Extended Education/Adult Education Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) Table

Northwest University Office of Extended Education Page | 16

In both cases, the Add/Drop form must be signed by the student’s advisor and submitted to the LEAP Office. Financial implications should be taken into account before the form is submitted. Click on link for form: Add Drop Request

Cancellation of Registration Students who register for classes but decide not to attend must immediately notify the Extended Education Office. Students must fill out a LEAP Program Cancellation/Withdrawal Request and submit it to the office before the first day of class. Click on link for the form: Cancellation Withdrawal Request

Changing Course Schedule after Registration Adjustments to student course schedules may affect their tuition package, financial aid and/or veteran’s benefits. Students should consult with their advisor prior to making course schedule changes. No tuition adjustment is made for students who remain within 12-17 credits as per their tuition package. Students who drop or add outside the tuition package will be charged or credited accordingly. Any additional charges due to an added course will be due immediately and are not considered part of the payment plan.

Change of Major Form If students decide to change majors, they should consult with their current advisor before submitting the Change of Major/Advisor Request Form to the Extended Education Office. There may be implications for prerequisites that will be needed, etc. Click on link to the form: Change of Major Form

Class Attendance Class attendance is critical in the adult education accelerated course model and to understanding the course material. Class attendance benchmarks are necessary to comply with federal financial and regional accreditation requirements. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. An absence is technically defined as missing any portion of a class.

In the case of student absence due to a contagious illness and if the instructor has received prior notification of the student absence, the instructor may want to record the class session using the Panopto video lecture capture system. To make up for missing class, students may be asked by the instructor to view the class session missed (available on the Discovery course site), take notes, participate in activities, and submit assignments as presented during the class session. The instructor may also have the option to prepare an alternate make-up assignment.

In the case of an unavoidable absence due to an emergency, students are responsible to contact the instructor, preferably at least 24 hours in advance. In the case of such an absence due to an emergency, instructors may permit students to make up the class using Panopto as described above. The instructor may also create an equivalent written make-up assignment. It should be noted that provisions for a class makeup are at the sole discretion of the instructor. The instructor is not required to provide a makeup option for the student and the student may be required to withdraw from the course.

Students who are not able to attend the first night of class for any reason must receive permission from the instructor to remain in the class. If permission is not granted to miss the first night of class, a student will need to drop the course and should work with his or her advisor to adjust their schedule. Once the add/drop deadline passes the student has the option to withdraw from the course. A grade of “W” (Withdraw) will be awarded and tuition will not be refunded.

Page 17: Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) · NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY Office of Extended Education/Adult Education Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) Table

Northwest University Office of Extended Education Page | 17

If students miss more than one night of class due to illness, they will be required to submit documentation from their physician. It should be noted that if two or more class sessions are missed in the course, students may be advised to withdraw from the course; this advisement would be at the discretion of the instructor. With the exception of absences due to contagious illness, two absences will automatically result in a grade of “F” for the course. A grade of “W” or “F” may affect student financial aid for the current and subsequent semesters; tuition charges remain in effect for current courses. A student who repeats a course will do so at his/her own expense.

Class Cancellation Notice Northwest University reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet the minimum number of students (less than seven). The University reserves the right to combine, and/or change the time, day or location of any class without obligation. The University also reserves the right to change the instructor without obligation. Schedule changes will be posted to the LEAP webpage and it is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all schedule changes.

Dean’s List Students who earn a current GPA of 3.5 or better, while carrying 12 credits or more of courses that affect GPA (i.e. non-pass/no credit courses), are placed on the Dean’s List, which is published at the conclusion of each semester by the Provost’s office. Full-time students with a current GPA of 3.300-3.499 are placed on the Honor’s List.

Failing a Course Students who receive a grade of “F” must retake the course in order to remove the failing grade from their permanent record. Students are financially responsible for retaking the class and should contact the Financial Aid and/or Student Accounts Office for more information.

Grievances Academic grievances should initially be addressed to the professor involved. If no satisfactory agreement is reached, the student should take the matter to the Director of Extended Education, and then to the Dean of the appropriate school if necessary. Formal academic grievances should be addressed to the Office of the Provost. Click on this link for more information.

Incompletes A student may request an “Incomplete” grade if the majority of the coursework is completed, but some assignments are delayed for reasons of illness or emergency. Request is made by submitting this form to the professor, agreeing to the conditions set forth by the professor, and receiving their written approval. The student must submit this form to the professor before grades are submitted for the class for which they would like an incomplete grade. Failure to do so may result in an “F” for the course. Click on link: Incomplete Grade Request. Students granted an “Incomplete” must submit all make-up assignments as recorded on the Request for Incomplete form. Due dates for all work will be set commensurate with why the Incomplete is being granted (i.e. illness or family emergency). The deadline for completion of the incomplete work is the last day of the following semester; after that date, the “Incomplete” will be changed to a grade of “F”.

Page 18: Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) · NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY Office of Extended Education/Adult Education Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) Table

Northwest University Office of Extended Education Page | 18

An “Incomplete” grade will not be given if the reason for assignments not completed is due to lack of student planning and self-discipline, or if students have done little or no work for the course. Both F’s and Incompletes may affect the student’s ability to succeed in their next class as well as continued financial aid eligibility. It is important for students to complete all course requirements.

Late Work Standard It is the student’s responsibility to meet all deadlines for class assignments. All late work will be penalized by 20%. Assignments more than one week late may not be accepted by the instructor.

Name/Address Change In the event that a student changes his/her name or address, the Name & Address Form should be submitted to the Extended Education office. Name and Address Change Form

School Closure Information In the event of a school closure due to inclement weather, decisions are usually made by 2:00pm for

classes. Students may find information about specific classes at: 1. Northwest University LEAP office at 425-889-7793. 2. School closure lists announced by local radio and television stations. 3. Subscribe for text NU Campus Alerts from Northwest University on the EAGLE homepage

Transcripts Once grades have been posted in the database, unofficial transcripts are available to students through Self-Service. An official transcript (including those grades and all previous NU courses and grades) will be available and sent upon request. Official transcript requests must be made in writing to the Registrar’s Office. Unpaid or past-due tuition payments will prevent the release of transcripts. Official transcripts will be sent directly from the University to the schools, employers, agencies, etc. Students may also request official transcripts to be mailed to them. A fee is required for each transcript. Transcript requests must be accompanied by the student’s signature and the transcript fee. If specific terms or specific course grades are to be included, that information should be noted so that the transcript is not sent before the required data is posted to the record. Phone orders for transcripts cannot be accepted. NOTE: Financial indebtedness to the University will prevent the release of a student’s transcript and/or diploma. If a student is delinquent (as determined by the Promissory Note) in his/her Federal Perkins Student Loan, he/she will not be eligible to receive deferment, cancellation provisions, nor will academic transcripts and/or diplomas be released. The Registrar can only verify the authenticity of course work earned at Northwest University. Transcripts entrusted to the University from other institutions cannot be duplicated or given to the student or other external individuals without the expressed written permission of the institution and the student. Withdrawal from a Course Students may withdraw from a course any time prior to the date of the last class session but no tuition adjustment will occur. Students are required to submit a completed Course Withdrawal Form to the Extended Education Office. The form must be signed by the student’s advisor. Students will receive a grade of “W” for the course from which they have withdrawn. This is a permanent grade on the transcript. Click on link for form: Course Withdrawal Form

Withdrawal from Northwest University Adjustments will be made on the accounts of students who withdraw from the University during a given semester, subject to the following conditions: 1) Students must notify their Academic Advisor of their withdrawal intentions. 2) Students must complete a Program Withdrawal Form, officially withdrawing from the remainder of

the current semester. Click on link for form: Cancellation Withdrawal Request

a) Tuition will be refunded at 100% for courses that start after the withdrawal date and these courses will be removed from the official university transcript.

b) No tuition will be refunded, and the official university transcript will record “W” for the courses in progress.

c) Completed courses may not be dropped or withdrawn. Tuition will not be refunded and an earned grade will be posted to the official University transcript.

3) Financial aid may be adjusted and the student will be responsible for any additional costs due to this adjustment. Scholarships and tuition credits directly funded by Northwest University may be removed if the remaining credit load drops below the full-time requirement of 12 credits per semester.

4) Fees are non-refundable.

5) Unused/Used Textbooks: Please contact the Bookstore regarding return policy. Non-attendance does not constitute dropping or withdrawing from a course or semester. Students who do not complete course work and/or fail to officially withdraw themselves by following all steps listed, will assume full responsibility for all costs and grades associated with that work.

To withdraw from the program, students must notify the Extended Education Office and submit a completed Cancellation/Withdrawal Form. Students will receive credit for courses completed. Withdrawal from the program will jeopardize any financial aid for the remainder of the academic year. Any refund due upon withdrawal from the University will be sent to the student or to the government agency as determined by the University’s refund policy. These regulations have been set by the state and federal governments. Click on link for form: Cancellation Withdrawal Request

Academic Honesty Northwest University expects honesty from students in all areas, including their academic lives. Academic dishonesty is a serious violation of Christian standards and will result in receiving a grade of “F” for the course, being dismissed from the course, or possibly being dismissed from the University. Instances of academic dishonesty are reported to the Office of the Provost. Academic dishonesty includes cheating on assignments or examinations, submitting the same (or essentially the same) paper in more than one course without prior consent of the current assigning professor(s), sabotaging another student’s work, and

Page 20: Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) · NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY Office of Extended Education/Adult Education Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) Table

plagiarizing. Students are expected to follow University policy with regards to issues of academic honesty (e.g. cheating, plagiarism) and proper conduct in the classroom, as detailed in the Academic Catalog. Disciplinary action for violation of these policies will be decided on a case-by-case basis and will be in accordance with University policy. Plagiarism consists (1) failing to cite quotations and borrowed ideas, (2) failing to enclose borrowed language in quotation marks, and (3) failing to put summaries and paraphrases in your own words. Any student disciplined by a faculty member for the alleged academic dishonesty has the right to appeal the disciplinary action. The student should initiate his/her appeal according to the procedure outlined in the Northwest University Student Academic Appeals Policy, available on the Provost’s webpage at: Academic Appeals Policy

Prior Learning Assessment Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a general term used by the University to describe all college-level credit awarded or recognized for learning acquired in non-college settings. The University considers PLA credit by two methods based on whether a recognized organization has assessed the learning (Certified Prior Learning) or whether Northwest University faculty must individually evaluate the student’s learning (Credit by Portfolio).

Graduation

Graduation Requirements To officially graduate and received a diploma, applicants must complete a Graduation Application the semester prior to the semester of graduation, and no later than the end of the first week of the semester in which they plan to graduate. It is recommended that students submit their graduation application at the beginning of the second semester after entering their cohort. This allows students to receive their graduation audit with adequate time to work with their advisor on any necessary adjustments on their degree plan. Students who do not complete their degree requirements by the due date may contact the Registrar’s Office to request a change in their degree completion date. The original graduation fee will apply for the later date. Degrees are normally conferred each semester:

Spring graduate: date of Commencement

Summer graduate: end of third week in August

Fall graduate: end of third week in December Commencement is held once a year in early May. Eligible students are encouraged to participate in the ceremony. To participate in Commencement, spring or summer graduates must be within six credit hours of completing all requirements for their degree. Students must also be current on all course requirements and be approved by the school faculty as making satisfactory progress in the program. If any of these criteria are not met, individual students will be evaluated by the Provost. Credit hours must be verified by the Registrar. Diplomas will be mailed (or held for pickup) to the student within 6-8 weeks of completion of work and degree posting. The catalog requirements in effect during the semester in which the student first enrolled are applicable, provided graduation is within six years from the end of that semester. However, a student may graduate under the requirements of the current catalog. It is expected that the requirements of the catalog chosen will be followed as a whole.

Student Responsibility While the University provides advisement services to its students through faculty advisors, the Registrar’s Office, and other sources, the final responsibility rests with the student for fulfilling all requirements for graduation, including those identified in an official program audit. This shall include requirements resulting from program modifications affecting course offerings as adopted by action of the faculty.

Graduation Honors Cum Laude: Students who have maintained a 3.500 to 3.699 grade point average in their NU course work.

Magna Cum Laude: Students who have a grade point average of 3.700 to 3.899 in their NU course work.

Summa Cum Laude: Students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.900 to 4.000 in their NU course work.

Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities: Selected students from the junior and senior classes are nominated by the faculty for inclusion in this national publication each year. Selections are based on character, leadership, and academic record.

Sigma Chi Pi: Sigma Chi Pi is an honor society established for graduates of endorsed Assemblies of God Colleges. Faculty will choose their selections from graduates and alumni.
