On December 7th the public is invited to attend the free community performance at 7:30 pm in the Heartland Theater. The performance is approximately 30 minutes long and may be enjoyed by all ages. As part of our wellness plan for students and staff, the committee would like to make a few changes surrounding meals and snacks and information distribution here at Heartland. The suggestions are to:
• Explore the expansion of the lunch program to include a second entree option for students.• Develop a schedule to conduct “Try Days” where students are able to sample new foods and vote as to
whether or not they would like to add them to the lunch offerings.• Research and offer parenting classes through a local organization.• Implement a “grab a snack” for students after school and prior to boarding the bus or moving on to an
after-school activity.•We would like to offer the after school snack option free of charge to students, supported by donations and eventually earning from working a concession stand. If we are unable to secure enough donations, we will likely need to implement a small fee for the items. If you would like to help through cash or product donations, please contact the school.
We are hoping to offer apples or oranges, granola bars, snack packs of nuts or crackers, etc. Any products that we hand out to students must qualify under the Smart Snacks standards as set by the USDA. If you are interested in bringing food to
school for students, it would be great to check with us first as we cannot accept snacks that do not meet the USDA guidelines. We hope that we can build a program to curb student’s hunger at the end of the day with healthy options!
School Closing
Information As the winter approaches,
occa s iona l bad weather necessitates the closing of school for the safety of our students. School closing information will be announced over the radio station KAWL ( 1 3 7 0 ) and te le v i s ion s ta t ions KHAS, KLKN, NTV and KOLN.
We also use an automated phone message service through School Messenger to notify parents about school closings as well. With this service it is very important that we have current numbers on file. Please call the school office if anything changes.
You may also call our school closing phone line at 402-723-4421. If a decision has been made the night before, the closing will be announced around 10:00pm. In the mornings it will be announced on the half hour from 6:30am to 8:00am.

4 VETERAN’S DAY 2019 Monday, November 11th, Heartland students, staff, and community members honored Veterans at the annual Veteran’s Day program. The program was full of pride and honor as we spent time thanking those who have served. This years essay topic was “What Makes America Great.” Elementary essay contest winners were Kate Haidle (1st place), Maddie Janzen (2nd place), and Riley Quiring (3rd place). High school winners were Abigael Stebbing (1st place), Naomi Onnen (2nd place), and Tanner Bottorf (3rd place). Thanks to Henderson State Bank for sponsoring the contests and to our judges. Scout troop 26 (Ayden Holt, Samuel Friesen and Carter Lewis) presented and retired the Colors at the program organized and hosted by the National Honor Society.
FIFTH GRADE GRADUATION
NOVEMBER 7TH, 2019 Fifth graders celebrated the culmination of the
D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program. The program was taught by Lt. Joshua Gillespie from the York County Sheriff’s Department. Milan Mierau received special recognition for his service to Henderson and dedication to D.A.R.E over the years. Sheriff Vrbka was also in attendance along with many family and friends. Congratulations students for working hard to learn valuable life skills.

Holiday Activity Suggestions for the Family Provided by Heartland Community School’s Early Learning Team
Speech / Language During car trips, talk about what you see along the way. Play a game of I Spy, or sing songs. In the evenings, talk about what you could do this allows for practice making choices, sharing about your idea and why it should be chosen, and problem solving. You can add language to any activity that you do as a family; ask questions, share stories, talk about what you need for an activity and what might happen or what just happened. Occupational Therapy Make “snowmen” out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Make popcorn for game or movie night, and challenge each other to eat it like this: pick up one kernel at time till your hand is full, then using the same hand move one kernel at a time to your fingertips before putting in your mouth. Make cut-out cookies. This is a great activity for fine motor skills: using a rolling pin, using cookie cutters, using an icing bag to pipe designs or letters, using finger and thumb to put decorations on the cookies (M&M’s, raisins, etc.). Physical Therapy Play a movie time game. Every time words like, “Santa, hot chocolate, snow ball, reindeer,” are mentioned do ten sit-ups and ten pushups. Keep a tally to track your physical movement after the movie is over. Indoor obstacle course. Set up 3-4 couch cushions in a line so they have to walk over them like a balance beam, put some of those extra Christmas boxes about 6 inches apart so they have to step in and through them, do 10 jumping jacks, then turn around and do an animal walk (bear crawl, crab walk, frog jump) on your way back through. Play outside and have a snowball fight, igloo race ( ace back and forth taking “igloo blocks” from one side to the other), climb hills, sled, build a snowman as a family. Pre-Academic/Cognitive Play games as a family, like Candy Land, Go Fish, Matching Game, or Uno. A family game night on a regular basis is a fun activity to look forward to all week! Many thinking skills, like problem-solving, can be worked on during this time, as well as math skills, like counting, matching, color recognition, etc. Social-Emotional Use meal time as a time to “catch up” with each other as a family. Go around and share about your day and maybe play a game of “What would happen if…” or “What would you do if…” or something similar that each person answers. Establish ground rules that all ideas are acceptable and try to encourage equal talking time (or as close as possible).

FFA Members attended National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana October 29th - November 2nd
The FFA members began their trip by touring the boyhood home of Mark Twain in Hannibal, Missouri. On Wednesday, members attended the opening session where guest speaker Bob Goff presented his message about how words matter. On Thursday, they attended the National FFA career expo and leadership workshops. Friday, members toured the Bayer Soybean facility in Windfall, Indiana and Conner Prairie in Noblesville, Indiana. We finished off our time at convention by attending the National FFA concert and sixth general session where members Maddie Miller and Lauren Quiring participated in the band. Members attending the convention in addition to band members were Devyn Bell, Rachael Dente, Aaron Goertzen, Alex Goertzen, Trevor Goertzen, Mason Hiebner, Maverick Hiebner, Tyler Lewis, Emily Nunnenkamp, and Reagan Weisheit.
The 2019 FFA District 7 Livestock Judging Contest was held in Central City at the Merrick County Fairgrounds. Three groups competed throughout the day: Seniors (11th & 12th grade), Juniors (9th &10th grade), and Junior High. 13 members from Heartland competed. The senior competitors were Reagan Weisheit, Heath Perez, Trevor Goertzen, and Cade Oswald. The junior competitors were Ruby Kliewer, Maddie Maltsberger, Merrick Maltsberger, Cole Miller, Reeve Oswald, Wyatt Panko, Zach Quiring, Grace Regier, and Kaden Siebert. During the competition, members judged classes of breeding ewes, market lambs, breeding gilts, market swine, breeding does, market goats, breeding bulls, market steers and a class of cull/keep Hereford heifers. Livestock competitions also include giving reasons on your class placements, questions on the classes of animals, and a written test.

Heartland Community School News
The National Honor Society, FFA, and FBLA of Heartland Community Schools will host a food drive at the school. The donations will be distributed to people in our community and the immediate area within our district. No one is required to participate, but the generosity will be appreciated by the families and individuals receiving these gifts. The food drive will start on Friday, December 6, 2019, and will end on Thursday, December 19, 2019. Food will be delivered on Friday afternoon.If you know a family that is in need of this gift or if you have any questions, please call Ms. Widick at the school or email her at [email protected].
Dec 6: SOUP AND CRACKERS
Dec 9: PASTA: spaghetti, lasagna noodles, macaroni, canned sauces, macaroni and cheese
Dec 10: CANNED VEGETABLES: corn, beans, peas
Dec 11: BREAKFAST: Cereal, pancake mix, syrup, muffin mix, jelly and pop tarts
Dec 12: CLEANING SUPPLIES: Pledge, dishwashing soap, Ajax, Windex, Mr. Clean and sponges
Dec. 13: PAPER AND PERSONAL: Soap, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper, razors, combs, shampoo
Dec. 19: PROTEIN: Tuna, peanut butter, cheese whiz, salmon, and chicken
Dec 20: DESSERTS AND CHRISTMAS FOODS chocolate chips, pie fillings, nuts, and Christmas candy
6TH - 12TH GRADE HOLIDAY CONCERT &
COOKIE SOCIAL There will be a 6th -12th Instrumental and
7th -12th Vocal Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 19, at 7:30 pm followed
by a cookie social in the cafeteria. The social is sponsored by the Heartland
Band Parents. Junior high band, senior high band and the senior high choir members are asked to bring 2 dozen cookies per family to
the kitchen before the concert.
K-6 HOLIDAY CONCERT
There will be an elementary choral concert on Thursday, December 5,
2019. There will be two performances in the
theater, 2:30pm and 7:00pm. Come and enjoy the special
Christmas Music. Heartland Education Association
will be serving a soup supper before the concert from 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm, for a
free will donation.

Kirby’s Dance GrantIsabelle Buller, a Heartland third grade student in Mrs. Naber’s class was recently awarded a $500.00 grant from Kirby’s Dance Studio in York. Isabelle has chosen to purchase durable headphones for her class to use when working with technology at school.
