On behalf of the London Chamber Orchestra, may I welcome you to this evening’s performance.

For the 2012/13 season we have yet another terrific setof concerts and we hope you will enjoy them. In thesesomewhat darkened times, an evening with LCO can bea great boost. For me, what is most lifting is seeing ourtalented musicians enjoy themselves as they perform. The smiles that play across their faces as the music flowsare just magical. As the musicians will readily tell you, thisis in part because Christopher Warren-Green gives themthe freedom to express themselves as they play, somethingwhich is hard to do in a bigger orchestra.

Our focus in 2012/13 is to ensure our sustainability and,in so doing, to help worthy causes; this is easier said thandone. Demand for support comes from so many places: thelarge, the small, the established, the new, the great and theaspiring. We hope that as you enjoy LCO this season you willvalue what we do, become even closer to us, and proactivelyprovide support. Any member of our management as wellas myself would be pleased to tell you how you can help.

Thank you for your kind attention and your support bybeing with us tonight.

Welcome fromChristopher Warren-GreenOur 11/12 season ended in a hive ofactivity linked to Her Majesty theQueen’s Diamond Jubilee and theOlympics with performances at StPancras Station, the Southbank Centreand Hampton Court Palace. Those ofyou who joined us for these concertswill have vivid memories of theincredible engagement and enthusiasmof the children involved in LCO’sMusic Junction project and of thespectacular architecture of the GreatHall at Hampton Court.

Programming LCO’s season is aprivilege I find genuinely exciting. Each year, I seek to provide a ‘menu’of repertoire that will inspire ourmusicians and audience alike.

For 12/13 I have chosen Bach as thekey, and specifically his BrandenburgConcerti as a binding musicalingredient to the season. Alongside theBrandenburgs, with their vitalrhythmic drive and clear musical lines,it made sense to include Stravinskyand Shostakovich. ‘Main course’composers were needed and of coursethese had to include Mozart andBeethoven. Mozart’s C minor Mass isone of his greatest works and I hopeyou agree with me in thinking thatLCO has a special relationship withBeethoven – hence an heroic end tothe season with his Egmont Overture,‘Emperor’ piano concerto and ‘Eroica’symphony.

In April, Music Junction participantswill also draw inspiration from Bach’sBrandenburg Concerto No 5, as will

harpsichordist and jazz musicianDavid Gordon, who is writing an‘Inspired by Bach’ piece for LCO withhis trio. And in the same concert youmust not miss hearing LCOConcertmaster Rosemary Furnissperform the Vivaldi Violin andRecorder Concerto with the BBCYoung Musician 2012 finalistCharlotte Barbour-Condini.

All through its 91 years LCO haschampioned new music and recentlymuch has been achieved through theLCO New ‘Inspired by’ series. We havein the past taken inspiration from art, architecture and, last year, fromBritain’s railway history as part of theCultural Olympiad. Through 12/13,LCO is working in partnership with theCentre for Digital Music at QueenMary, University of London, present-ing young composers with frontiertechnology in ‘Inspired by Digital’.

I offer my sincere thanks toeveryone who supports LCO, from ourPatron HRH the Duchess of Cornwall,LCO’s trustees and advisers to themany generous supporters, and ofcourse our essential and loyalaudience.

The London Chamber Orchestra

Inspired by the chamber orchestras ofthe eighteenth century, AnthonyBernard pioneered the idea that therewas space in modern music for aprofessional chamber orchestra, withmusicians of soloist quality and artisticdirection tailored to the repertoire. On11 May 1921 Bernard launched hisnew orchestra, The London ChamberOrchestra, at 4 St James’s Square.
