    ConceptualModel of An Excellent Layout

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    30/54

    Factors of an Excellent Layout

ProportionDefinition: It deals with the ratio of one part

to another and of the parts to the whole.

Example: Pictures must be sized properly tokeep up with other shapes on the page.

    Dont: Square cuts are undesirable.

Do: Length of stories must be considered. Along story may ruin the proportion of thepage. A jump story is better than a poorly

    proportioned page.

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    31/54

    Unity (Harmony)

Definition: It is the agreement between parts.

Example: The content of every page/double

page must blend as a harmonious unit.

Dont: No one part of the page should overshadowanother.

Do: The headlines should complement each otherand the pictures should not distract the eyes toomuch from the type.

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    32/54

    Emphasis

Description: It involves the differentiation betweenthe more important and the less important.

Example: News/articles must be displayedaccording to importance.

Do: The news value of every story must determine

to what page it should find print, its position on thepage, and the style and size of its headline.

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    33/54

    Balance

Definition/ Description: Visual units on both sidesare not identical but are in positions so equated to

    produce a felt equilibrium.

    Contrast

It is the blending of units as one.

    TYPES OF FRONT PAGEMAKEUP

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    42/54

    1. Perfect BalanceMakeup

Ex. A large headline, placed in the right hand

columns of a five columnfront page, is balancedwith a correspondinglarge one in the first andsecond column. Otherheadlines are similarlyarranged. A one-columncut at the top of the ofthe column four.

The New York Times isnoted for this type of

    makeup.

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    43/54

    2. Brace or FocusMakeup Headlines are

diagonally arrangedfrom the upper left tothe lower right handcorner or vice-versajust like the bracesupporting house.Balance is obtainedby various devicessuch as two-columnheads, boxes, andcuts which are usedto offset the weightconcentrated in theupper right or upper

    left hand corner.

    3. BrokenColumn MakeupThe page is broken intoseveral units to give

space to many stories.Symmetry is obtainedby carefully arrangingthe contents so as notto cancel each other by

their nearness. Largeheads and cuts areplaced where they givethe page a pleasingpattern.

  • 7/30/2019 layouting.pptx

    45/54

    4. Contrast andBalance (Occult)

MakeupType groups that arearranged at varyingdistances from the

    center like two boys on

a see-saw. It issometimes calledoccult or hidden

balance because thetype group with its

headline may bebalanced with apicture, an illustration

or a box, instead ofanother type group.

    5. StreamlinedMakeupThe format is similar tothat of the contrast and

    balance makeup.However, the

    nameplate is usuallyfloated, headlines are

flushed in cap andlower-case (clc) type, and large body types

are often used. Insteadof boxing stories in full, three quarter boxes are

    resorted to.

    6. Circus MakeupIt is broken-columncarried to the extreme. The page is broken up

    with no attempt at

    regularity, symmetry,or order. Manyheadlines of all sizes;

boxes and cuts arescattered all over the

page, each clamoringfor attention, andscreaming as barkers in

a carnival circus do.There is no focus.
