Presentaion AbstractPresentaion Abstract
Enterprise-level information systems and software providers have long neglected the operations side of the manufacturing busi-ness. The current quality, traceability, process control and perform-ance information visibility demands facing manufacturers led to a new perspective on how factory information should be handled. It led to the emergence of a consolidated IT system to take its place next to ERP for business operations, PLM for R&D operations—a system concept called MOS. A ‘Manufacturing Operations System’ is one system able to support the needs of the factory from planning and launch to execution, and through to data fulfillment. This presentation discusses how software tool proliferation in the factory became a functional and cost problem, and how MOS ad-dresses those challenges. It explores how the drive toward MOS also relates to the increasing demands for regulatory compliance, traceabil-ity, and visibility to factory performance and quality levels. The sub-ject matter should be of interest to any type of manufacturer in atten-dance as well. Total information management for factory operations is no longer something impacting only the top-tier OEMs—today’s mar-ket is bringing such requirements into every size and type of electron-ics manufacturing enterprise. The attendee should leave the presenta-tion armed with a perspective on how addressing the disparate re-quirements of the factory with a singular solution can be easier, more cost effective, and functionally superior to the ‘point-solution’ tactics were able to achieve in the past.

Hello Everyone,
Happy Holidays!Happy Holidays!
Winning the war often means losing several major and minor battles along the way. We plan out our lives with the best of intentions making so many mistakes along the way, and yet.....success is within our reach if we just try hard enough and never give up! How great is that? With my last year as President of the SMTA Los Angeles and Orange County chapter coming to a close, I want to thank all of you, our great members and friends who have continuously supported our activities. Our chapter has a star ranking reputation nationally and it is because we have an amaz-ing group of people in our membership. I especially would like to say a few words of appreciation to the rest of the board whose dedi-cation and talent are without comparison. Riki Brown(aka Mr. Incredible) of Golden West Technol-ogy, our current Treasurer who keeps our money safe and counted, has been in the SMTA longer than some of us have been breathing. Okay, I’m not saying that he’s ancient but that he has been the Pillar of chapter for many years. Then, we have Scott Penin of Paradigm Manufacturing, our VP, another long standing SMTA board member that has devoted his time and shown us his racing skills on occasion transporting him-self and supplies to and fro for our golf event which he co-chairs every year. He can also deep fry a mean turkey for those of you who’d like to show up at his door for Thanksgiving dinner. Doug Dixon, Mr. Home Run, can be counted on to bring it home every time for our chapter when he is not busy acquiring new companies to add on to his empire as Global Director of Marketing for the behemoth, Henkel Corporation. A more supportive Global corporate member celebrating his 20th year of SMTA membership(!), we could not ask for more. We have Ron Gone Gonzales of Revco Products who joined us this year as our Technical VP. Ron brought with him a fresh attitude, new ideas and a very positive outlook to any challenging situa-tion that came up of which there were many. Assisting Ron and Scott during the golf tournament and on membership drives, we are very fortunate to have Matt Frat Boy Olson of Practical Tools. Matt does not have an official board position but he does whatever he can to promote and support our events with the gusto and enthusiasm that only the Young and the Restless can bring forth. Many thanks to Bob Sykes of Safetran, our Videographer, who spent countless hours taping and editing video for our chapter meetings. Lastly, I save the best. Kathy Palumbo, founder and CEO of PA&LS, LLC, is our Secretary whose technical expertise in the industry, energy, and multi-tasking talents have contributed greatly to our chapter as shown in our award winning newsletters, website, meeting minutes and overall success in chapter events. I have no doubt that her reign as our next chapter Madame President will be an amazing one. As a closing note, many thanks and a shout out to those Regulars who come out to the meetings and support our events through thick and through thin: Steve W., Chuckie E., Bob H., Andrew L., Jerry A.(brothers), Leo O., Andrew W., Tony V., Frank K., Banana-man, the SolderMask gang, Bryan N., Jeff K., Henkel gang, Michael L. and eMT gang, Larry A. and Qualpro gang, and so many others.
We hope to see many of you at our House of Blues Christmas Party on December 5th!

I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost more than 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life... And that is why I succeed. - Michael JordanMichael Jordan

It is official, all LA/OC SMTA board members have agreed to sponsor an EXPO & TECH FORUM Event for 2009. This has been discussed over the years many times at various board meetings and the board is excited about the prospects of having a EXPO & TECH FORUM in the Southern California area.
The planning committee will begin planning for the event soon. The time, location, and format still has to be selected and once this is done the promotion will begin.
If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee, a vendor, presenter, or attendee please let us know so we can see what level of interest there is for this event in the Southern California area.
EXPO & TECH FORUM’s are held by local SMTA chapters throughout the world and are supported by SMTA National. The events are inexpensive, educational and provide an excellent forum for both users and suppliers to meet and discuss technical issues and needs.
To understand more about EXPO & TECH FORUM shows please visit the SMTA web page at:

The Rush to Clean NoThe Rush to Clean No--Clean.Clean. PRESENTED BYPRESENTED BY
Michael Konrad , President, Aqueous TechnologiesMichael Konrad , President, Aqueous Technologies
Presentation AbstractPresentation Abstract
Just as the little girl in the 1982 film, Poltergeist, eerily exclaimed; “They’re Back…”, the electronic assembly industry has witnessed the return of a familiar yet unappreciated process step, defluxing. Once commonplace, then relegated to military applications, today, defluxing has once again moved toward the mainstream. The miniaturization of electronic assemblies and their components, implementation of lead-free alloys, combined with improved quality standards and higher reliability expectations have culminated to form a growing demand for ionicly clean elec-tronic circuits. Modern defluxing methods, chemical selections, cleanliness testing, throughput consid-erations, and effluent handling will be discussed.
Speaker ProfileSpeaker Profile
Mr. Michael Konrad has worked continuously within the electronics assembly equipment indus-try since 1985. He served as Vice President of Unit Design (a manufacturer of soldering and cleaning equipment) from 1985 until 1992.
In 1992, Mr. Konrad founded Aqueous Technologies Corporation, North America’s largest manufacturer of batch format defluxing and cleanliness testing equipment where he serves as Presi-dent / CEO. To date, Aqueous Technologies has provided defluxing and cleanliness testing equipment to more than 2600 companies worldwide.
Professional Affiliations:
Mr. Konrad has served on the EMPF Manufacturers Committee in the late 1980’s, is presently a member of the SMT Magazine Editorial Advisory Board and has published numerous articles on clean-ing and cleanliness testing in SMT Magazine, Circuits Assembly, EM Asia, Global SMT, and others. Mr. Konrad was a member of IPC’s Stencil Cleaning Task Group, contributing to IPC-7526 Stencil and Misprinted Board Cleaning Handbook, and is a current member of IPC’s Cleanliness Testing Task Group. To date, Mr. Konrad has participated in more than 120 electronic-industry tradeshows in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Aqueous Technologies is a corporate member of SMTA and IPC.

The SMTA & MentorNet One-on-One E-Mentoring Program is a chance to make a big difference in the life of a student in as little as 15 minutes a week.
SMTA seeks members to be mentors who are: Science and engineering professionals
In our related industries Active, on leave, or retired
To match with protégés who are: Pursuing a professional future in the fields of engineering and science
At the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, or early career faculty (untenured) levels
Although mentors volunteer their time to benefit the protégé, they can also find a rewarding experience for themselves. “I hope [my student] is getting as much out of it as I am,” is how one MentorNet mentor de-
scribes the experience. More than 70% of mentors have recommended MentorNet's e-mentoring program to a friend or colleague!
Mentoring relationships last 8 months. Because mentors and students communicate entirely by email, they can choose a schedule that is convenient for both. In fact, 90% of our mentors feel that
