Choices from the home page are: • Modern Authors• "Full Text"• Ancient Authors and Texts • Subjects and Disciplines Prior to vol. 67 [1996]• Subjects and Disciplines After vol. 67 [1996]

We'll explore what these mean in more detail in a minute!

Searching by Modern Author

Typing a last name brings up a list of possible matches.  Click on one or more, and click "ok".  Then click "Search."Think carefully about spelling for Greek names!

Page 9: L annee philologique_online_new

Searching by "Full Text" (= Keyword)

Type one or more keywords; no need to use "and".No phrase searching possible. Consider language - a search for "dog" will not find "chien."

Page 10: L annee philologique_online_new

Searching Ancient Authors and TextsType the start of an ancient author's name (or an anonymous text) in Latin. A list of choices will appear. Select one or more, click "ok" and then click "Search."Search will return all scholarly works about that author/textIt is not possible to search for a specific work of a given author.

About Subjects and DisciplinesL'Annee categorizes records based on a set of subject headings, some with sub-categories, things like: II. Linguistique - F. Metrique, for searching for the topic of meter. The subject headings display in French in the search interface so grab a dictionary if you need one! The structure of the subject headings changed in 1996, so you must search before and after that date separately (or build a complex search, discussed later). Subject headings are very broad and will return 100s or 1000s of results - consider limiting by language or date or building a complex search using subject headings and a Full Text (keyword) search.

Choose Subjects and Disciplines in the drop-down box and a menu opens.Click on the + signs to go deeper into the hierarchy.Check boxes to select one or more subjects to search.Click "ok," then click "Search."

Creating Complex Searches

Getting the most out of L'Annee involves building searches.  Use the Boolean operators AND, OR and

NOT to develop complex searches.

AND narrows a search - you can find only the articles that are about Homer AND include the keyword

Aphrodite.OR broadens a search - you can find all articles with

the keyword "dog" OR "hund" OR "chien".NOT allows you to eliminate things from a search - all

articles about Aphrodite that do NOT mention Miletus.

Many people "get" Boolean operators better as Venn diagrams. Images from http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikhei/ / CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Boolean Search: Homer AND Aphrodite

Add an Ancient Author search for Homer to a "Full Text" for aphrodite using AND.

Note you can add more search boxes using the + button, to build an even more complex search.

Filter a Search by Date or Language

Working with Search Results

Search results display in a list.  You can choose how many records per page and how they are sorted; default is 10, by author. From this screen you can save the search to My Searches, modify it and run it again ("Modify Search"), or see a list of searches you've done in this session ("Search History").

Re-sort Results

Don't like the default sort order?  Click on the up and down arrows next to author, title or date to re-sort (all have the option of A-Z or Z-A). Or change your personal default - log in (slide 4).

L'Annee to Refworks

"Save" allows direct export to RefWorks from the results page or an individual record.RefWorks will open in a new tab and ask you to log in.EndNote users: export as .ris file and import within EndNote.

Page 26: L annee philologique_online_new

Note: L'Annee records are in a European style, with words in article titles not capitalized.  Some citation styles (i.e. MLA) require capitalization.  You may need to hand-edit records to comply - RefWorks does not do this automatically.
