The Annual Athletic Meet of Amrita School of Engineering Bengaluru
was held on 16th March 2011 at Sports Authority of India, Southern Center
Bangalore. The day embodied the spirit of holistic education that Amrita Viswa
Vidyapeetham upholds, with students elevating the body and the mind by
participating in various athletic events.
The students, representing their respective houses, gave one another
tough competition to emerge as winners. The most coveted title- the Champion of
the Event in boys and girls category was bagged by Mr. Sushane and Ms. Ramya
Krishana R. of VI semester ECE respectively.

National Seminar on Trends and Developments in Sensors and
Instrumentation – TDSI 2011
Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Amrita
School of Engineering, Bengaluru, organized a two-day national seminar on
“Trends and Developments in Sensors and Instrumentation: TDSI- 2011” on 8th
and 9th April 2011. The objective of the seminar was to bring together the
academicians, engineers and researchers from eminent institutions to discuss and
understand the issues related to sensors and its applications. The seminar was
attended by 44 delegates from across the country and 88 students from
ASE,Bengaluru. The inaugural ceremony was presided over by the Chief Guest,
Prof. S. Mohan, Chairman, Centre of Excellence in Nano Electronics, IISc Bangalore;
and graced by Correspondent, Br. Dhanraj; Associate Dean, Prof. Rakesh S.G.;
Chairman, Department of ECE, Prof. C.G.S. Sarma; and Vice Chair, Department of
ECE, Prof. Shikha Tripathi. Prof. C.G.S. Sarma welcomed the gathering and
introduced the Chief Guest to the audience. The keynote address was delivered by
Prof. S. Mohan on “Micro and Nano Systems”. He spoke about the concepts and
applications of MEMS. He also brought to light the research and development
happening in this area at the national level .
The first day hosted invited talks from distinguished speakers;
namely, Dr. M. M. Nayak, Director, Launch Vehicle Programme office, ISRO,
Bangalore; Prof. Rajanna, Chairman, Dept. of Instrumentation & Applied Physics,
IISc Bangalore; Mr. Janardhana Rao, Robert Bosch Engineering; Mr. Manish
Mohan, Field Technical Consultant, National Instruments, Bangalore.

They touched upon the recent trends and research in the areas of
Sensors and Instrumentation. Their topics were “Advanced Sensors for Space
Applications”, “Thin Film Based Sensors”, “Automotive Power-Train Sensors”, and
“Emerging Trends in Instrumentation: Virtual Instrumentation”. An exhibition and
demonstration of sensor devices and instruments was also organized during the
workshop. Institutes such as ISRO, DRDO, Bigtec Labs, Robert Bosch Engineering
and National Instruments were among the institutes that displayed their
products.
The second day of the workshop had eminent speakers talking about
the significant applications of sensors. Mr. G. Natarajan, Aeronautical
Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru; Mr. Mohanvelu, Scientist, DEBEL,
Bengaluru; Dr. Chandrasekhar Nair, Director & CEO, Bigtec Labs, Bengaluru
delivered their talks on “Ground Control Station for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”,
“Biomedical Sensors and Applications”, “Evolution of an Idea into a Product –
Micro PCR at Bigtec Labs” respectively. The seminar concluded with a valedictory
function and felicitation of the speakers and session chairs. The valedictory
address was given by Dr. M. S. Thakur, Dy. Director, CFTRI, Mysore. He gave a
detailed presentation on the applications and the work done in the area of
biosensors in India.
The dignitaries and the participants appreciated the institute for
organizing an event of such importance and relevance that offered an opportunity
to all to discuss and familiarize with the trends in the field of Sensors and
Instrumentation.

After soliciting applications for the post of president, vice-president,
secretaries and joint secretaries of the twelve clubs of Amritadhara, scrutiny and
few interviews, the new Amritadhara team was announced on 29th April 2011.
The event began with the outgoing President and Vice-President
expressing their gratitude to everybody for the support extended to them. With
words of advice and caution, the Associate Dean, Dr. Rakesh S.G. and the Chair
Amritadhara, Dr. Shika Tripathi called upon the new team to plan and design
future activities for Amritadhara.
Over the years, Amritadhara has grown with many new clubs added
to it; thereby requiring more people to shoulder responsibilities. So, this year, the
team has one President and two Vice-Presidents each for cultural and technical
wings.
Ms. Nandini M. of 5th Semester ECE is chosen to be President with
Mr. Anuj Ramakrishnan and Ms. Sreesha Kashyap as Vice-President of the
technical wing and cultural wing respectively.

Dr. T. S. B. Sudarshan has been invited to be a Technical Programme

Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.
Dr. T.S.B. Sudarshan gave a keynote address on “Cache Memory Design for
Embedded Systems” on 30th April 2011 in Annual International Conference
on “Emerging Research Areas” held between 28th and 30th April 2011 at
Kottayam, Kerala.
CSE Forum – FACE Activities
The forum hosted a seminar conducted by Mr. Navdeep Kumar from Infosys
on “Rapid Application Development using Adobe Flex” on 6th April 2011. It
was attended by 45 students from VI semester CSE and IT.
The 4th edition of “Broadcast”, the newsletter of the CSE students’ forum
was published in the month of April. A copy is displayed on the CSE notice
board and is also available on the forum’s website.
