ROAD FEATURESTEST HYOSUNG GT650N – 23

There’s more – much more – to Hyosung’s new decade offerings than fuel injection as Michael Esdaile found when heevaluated one of the new GT650N EFI models.

TEST: YAMAHA YZF-R125 – 27

Young or old Yamaha’s trick little YZF-R125 is going to make you smile. Tester Aaron ‘Stretch’ Lupton explains why.

LAUNCH: BMW S 1000 RR – 31

Others have tried and failed. But that hasn’t stopped BMW taking the Japanese on with their new S 1000 RR Superbike. Todd Sutherland has the story.

TEST: ROYAL ENFIELD – 37

The longest running model in motorcycling has fi nally been updated. Michael Esdaile gave it a whirl.

RIDDEN: HONDA VFR1200 – 45

With mixed reviews from the world launch, Big Dave was prepared to be disappointed by Honda’s all-new VFR1200. He wasn’t. And neither, he reckons, will you.

CLASSICS ON PARADE – 48

This year’s Classic Festival at Pukekohe was another beauty. Rhys Jones and Michael Esdaile explain why.

DIRT FEATURESTEST: SUZUKI RMX450Z – 96

With Sean Clarke representing the mag at the offi cial local launch dirt tester Ollie S. was hanging out to try Suzuki’s all-new RMZ450Z himself. When he did, like this month’s guest tester Mark Newton, he was well impressed!

TEST: HONDA CRF250R – 102

From a marketing perspective fuel-injection is a must-have if you want your 250cc 4-stroke MXers to be taken seriously. But after riding Honda’s 2010 CRF250R dirt tester Ollie Sharp wonders if, perhaps, the pace of development has been too quick.

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE – 113

Want to combine a get-away to an exotic country in Asia with a bit of bike riding? Tae Allison might just have the perfect deal for you.

ADVENTURE: MID-NORTH RIDE – 124

KR’s friendly local farmer John Buxton had heard good things about fellow Enduro veteran Des Trubshoe’s fi rst Mid-North Adventure Rider. So late last year he loaded up the trusty KTM and pointed his fully blinged out Ford Exlporer north….(only kidding on that last bit John…) to ride the second.

ADVENTURE: DUSTY BUTT – 128

After months of planning Racing Dave fi gured he had the annual Dusty Butt Adventure Ride’s new Small Bike Challenge sussed… until it all went wrong.

Flick through older issues of Kiwi Rider magazine and you will see me wearing a nice personal-

ized Arai RX-7 full-face helmet (complete with trick mirrored

visor) painted by NZ importer Dold Industries’s recommended helmet

‘artist’ Mark James.

It was replaced late last year by Dolds with the latest RX-7 GP model, one of the fi rst helmets to meet both the ECE Regulation 22-05 and the new Snell M2010 standard.

I’ve been wearing the new RX-7 GP now for just over six months and as per usual with any Arai helmet it has a nice snug fi t – wind tested everytime I ride at Pukekohe to over 250km/h – is whisper-quiet, well-ventilated and came com-plete with a clip-in anti-fog insert.

Check out the ad in KR and you will see that there are several design and paint options in the RX-7 GP range. I chose the Randy replica silver because I

like silver-based designs and reckon the updated Randy Mamola replica one is a good blend of the old and the new.

The RX-7 GP is the top of Arai’s line and is based on the previous range-top-per (and still available now as a second-tier), the Corsair.

Though it’s hard to tell unless you put examples of the two lines side by side, the RX-7 GP has a slightly larger visor aperture for better vision and ven-tilation plus a trick little adjustable clear plastic ‘Air Wing’ on the top to reduce lift at high speeds.

I’ve been around long enough to see fi rst-hand the consequences both of not wearing a helmet at all, and wearing an old and/or loose-fi tting one. Hence I nev-er, EVER, venture out on a bike without one of the best helmets money can buy.

In the Arai range that’s the new RX-7 GP with retail prices starting at $1399 and going to $1599 for the race replicas. KR

I’ve long been a fan of Avon tyres on the Blackbird, particularly as they were one of the fi rst manufacturers to recognise the special needs of ‘hyperbikes’ such as the Honda Blackbird I owned for eight years.

The Azaro ‘B’ load rating was the fi rst Avon tyre specifi cally developed for heavier powerful bikes and this was followed up with the Storm ST which I would cheerfully have stuck with had I not decided to fi t an Avon Viper Sport front tyre in conjunction with a Storm rear in 2008.

Well, if I thought that a front Storm was good, the Viper was an order of magnitude better, 7000 kms from a pure sport front tyre on a Blackbird is a remarkable result. As with past Avon tyres, the wear profi le remained largely constant over a long peri-od, extending good handling characteristics for a big percentage of the total tyre life.

ENTER THE VP2

Again, that’s where the story might have ended had I not then decided to try the successor to the Viper, the VP2.

The VP2 Sport has the same features developed for the Storm ST and Viper, namely high silica compound and a number of innovations regarding changing the area and shape of the tyre’s contact patch, depending on lean angle and side forces.

Where it differs, however, is a hybrid belt construction which is reputed to be a world fi rst. Steel wires of different tensions are apparently wound around the tyre to produce great stability and mechanical grip at all speeds and loads.

The other completely new feature is that three different rubber compounds are used in the construction. There is a durable medium compound in the centre for improved mileage and a softer compound out to the edges for maximum grip at high lean angles. A third low hysteresis com-pound (rapid rebound property) is applied across the tread base to improve the bond between the two road contact compounds and the carcass underneath.

RIDE IMPRESSIONS

The initial ride is in cold but sunny conditions covering the northern third of the Coromandel Peninsula Loop. A real test of a tyre – twisty, lots of side forces, coarse chip on the road. Not using too much throttle through the corners over the Hill to scrub in tyres properly and to avoid going down in an embarrassing heap!

Changing line and turn-in is very fast. I was going to say that it drops in quickly, but that would give entirely the wrong im-pression. The bike rolls in a very controlled manner with no tendency to ‘drop’ in and line changes happen almost automatically which is really impressive on a big bike like

AVON VP2 SPORTlong term use

the Blackbird. It’s not at all fl ighty, feels totally predictable. The ride feels fairly stiff, maybe not as much carcass fl ex as I’ve experienced with previous tyres, but that’s no bad thing on a Blackbird.

To summarise – rapid directional changes but feels ultra-stable with no sign of skittishness. Allows good angles of lean without being aware of it.

IMPRESSIVE STUFF

Initially I was a bit leery about applying too much power coming out of tight corners but it’s the stability which really stands out. I’ve already mentioned the controlled manner in which the bike rolls in. Well, when cranked over, even in bumpy corners it just sits on the chosen line and angle of heel with no sign of nervousness – fantastic for confi dence levels, not to mention safety.

First ride in cold, wet conditions – all in the name of ‘all conditions testing!’ Take it easy for a bit and then start relaxing as the tyres bite well. Earlier worries about the rain grooves not extending as far outwards as the Storms disappear. The high silica content and soft compound towards the edge of the tyre in combination with the ‘reactive footprint’ is undoubtedly giving a higher level of mechanical grip compared with sports touring tyres. Whatever the reason, Avon’s claim of outstanding wet weather performance is vindicated. They are at least as good as the Storms which is saying a lot.

MEASURED WEAR RATE

The rear centre was down to the 1.5 mm minimum depth after 5100 km, at which stage the front centre still had 2.5mm of tread depth and is probably good for 6500-7000 km.

I was really surprised that they lasted so well on the ‘Bird given its 230 kg dry weight plus the fact that that the distance had been largely covered at a ‘sporting’ pace on mainly twisty roads.

Absolute wear rate of the softer compound at the outer part of the tyres is predictably higher but as you don’t spend so long leaned over, the net effect is that the profi le maintains its shape very well indeed for a signifi cant part of the tyre life. A true sports bike with signifi cantly less weight and more aggressive steering geometry could expect a much better life under normal road conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Avon has certainly developed a tyre which delivers the goods and it was a great opportunity to test them over a wide range of conditions. The options of Sport, Supersport and Xtreme also allow riders to select the characteristics which best suit their needs in a sports tyre.

Mitas E09 adventure tyres were fi tted to the Yamaha Tenere I used for the Far North Adventure Ride late last year and I was impressed with their all-round performance.

The ride to Whananaki was all on the seal and in very wet conditions. These tyres were surefooted in the wet and allowed me to maintain normal open road speeds on what was a pretty ugly afternoon.

On the day of the event the ground had dried and the trickiest riding was on the wet grass which was a fair test for these tyres given that the Tenere is a mid-sized but fairly heavy bike.

The E09s stuck to the task and provided reliable grip on the grass and all other surfaces the off-road type course threw at us.

The day provided a gravel road blast which the knobby-style Mitas E09s lapped up making the big Yamaha feel a bit more like a trail bike and the seal section home turned into the Whananaki Grand Prix, the tyres as impressive on the fast twisty roads back to base as they were on the grass, clay and gravel of the Far North ride.

All in all these tyres performed excellently for a road-rated knobby Adventure tyre and provide a realistic platform to ride to an Adventure Ride, do the event and ride home all on one set of tyres – with a bonus that they are very competitively priced. KR

The Arai Tour X3 is born out of a range of helmets that have a reputation for being second-to-none, with the fi t, features and feel of a premium product.

The whole point of this helmet is to offer the adaptability needed to be a top road and adventure touring helmet in one pack-age, hence the quickly removable peak and visor.

The idea is that you can use the features you want for the type of riding you are doing. On the road when riding an Adventure Bike with a screen I found the standard setup fi ne but when I took the Yamaha YZF-R1 for a strop I removed the peak and found the lid very comfortable and only slightly noisier than a good road helmet.

In adventure mode with the peak installed your eyes are nicely shaded and the multi vent system feeds you plenty of air while with the anti-fog lens fi tted to the pin system on the visor you get good clear vision.

That said, you still have the option of fl icking off the visor and using goggles if you are in real dirt mode.

The Tour X3 is also a good looking lid with high quality graphics and paint work inspired by the various Charlie and Ewen docos, or you can order it in plain colours if you can’t be bothered with all the fuss.

I have used this helmet in many diverse riding situations and it makes a great commuting and road touring helmet which really steps up in the murky world of adventure riding where its design and features work beautifully. If you are looking for a helmet that will not let you down in any situation check out the Tour X3. KR
