JUST months after it opened, the firstgovernment high school in Jeffreys Bay,the Jeffreys Bay Comprehensive High
School, is in turmoil.
Its first principal, Craig Nicholson, is onsick leave since last year - leaving the schoolwithout a principal, deputy principal and de-partment heads. Thus, in essence, the schoolhas no management structure.Since the school opened its doors in July
2015 after endless delays, the local DemocraticAlliance (DA) in Jeffreys Bay identified morethan a dozen problems that urgently need to beaddressed if the school wants to keep its doorsopen. Problems include insufficient space to ca-ter for the high demand of learners wanting toenrol, a lack of teachers, no text books, over-crowded classrooms and a lack of planning.According toDAMPElza vanLingen, the
school is in a state of crisis with little orno support from the Department of Educa-tion.“No budget has been received from the De-
partment of Education for the administrationof the school, and even items like printing pa-per are being funded by the teachers them-selves,” says Van Lingen. “There are no textbooks for Grade 10, and noEnglish text books
for Grade 8 and 9. There are on average 50learners per classroom and most have toshare desks.”According to Van Lingen, despite the
school also teaching Grade 10 since the be-ginning of the year, and its learners increas-ing from 472 learners in 2015 to about 756currently, there are still only 15 teachers -one of whom is acting principal. The schoolhas a waiting list of approximately 150learners. “There are no plans to build phasetwoof the school -whichwas supposed to com-mence in 2015 - during this financial year, northe next financial year,” says Van Lingen.“This lack of planning will see the school
run out of space once it expands next year tocater forGrade 11.Mockery is also beingmadeof the fact that the school is supposed to offertechnical subjects. The workshops have notbeen built, neither is there any evidence thatthe boys and girls hostel will be built.“TheDepartment of Education is failing the
children of JeffreysBay and this cannot be ac-cepted or tolerated. We demand to be forward-ed an immediate plan to rectify the currentposition of staff, education managementstructures, additional teachers, textbooksand the necessary funding.”No comment could be obtained from theDe-
partment of Education at the time of going toprint.

A reward of over R6 500 is on offer to bring“serial” animal torturers and killers to jus-tice.
JBay Crime Watch, with the help of localbusinesses and residents, have stumped upthemoney for information leading to thepros-ecution of unknown assailants who are re-spectively shooting birdswith a blow-gunandpoisoning cats since thebeginningof theyear.Avid animal lovers Suzanne Kruger and
Carine White, who recently launched theJBay Crime Watch Facebook Page, made ittheir mission to ride the culprits to book. And it all started with a single post. After becoming aware of several incidents
where birds and cats suffered at the hands ofresidents, White appealed to local businessesto sponsor a nice reward. “Like a decent mealfor twowith a bottle ofwine thrown in.Maybeabout R500?,” she posted on their FacebookPage.Within minutes businesses and residents
started responding by pledgingmoney towardsthe cause, and pledges are still coming in.“We would never have anticipated such an
overwhelming response. It is heart-warmingto see that such a majority of residents carefor our animals and are willing to assist to ap-prehend those guilty to this type of cruelty,”says White.
“We as a community might have our differ-ences, but when it counts, we all stand togeth-er. Together we can catch the people shootinganimals with darts and poisoning cats.”Since beginning January, White and Kru-
ger received several reports of pigeons foundin the area with 7.5- to 10-centimeter metaldarts through their bodies. “At least threebirds were found alive with the needle-likeprojectiles lodged in their bodies. This is justhorrifying,” says Suzanne Kruger from JBayCrime WatchAccording to Kruger, the birds were spot-
ted in Uys Street.“It appears that the darts were fired from
a blow-gun. The injuries are likely to worsenand become infected, resulting in a painfuldeath.”Kruger says they furthermore received re-
ports about three cats that suffered ahorribledeath after being poisoned in the vicinity ofC-Place since January.According to Kruger, she fully under-
stands the frustration residents suffer fromthe presence of stray cats, but poisoningthese cats is not the answer.“They can rather contact me and I will put
them in touch with someone who is qualifiedto trap, rescue and release these cats to goodhomes after they have been sterilised.”According to Kruger, the reward will only
be claimed from the various businesses andindividuals once the culprit or culprits have
been successfully apprehended.Anyone with information or those wanting
more information, contact Kruger at 079 506
8748 or White at 082 781 1264.All information received will be treated
confidentially.

IN light of the spike in criminal activitiesover the festive season, the Jeffreys BayPolice are hard at work to reduce thecrime rate in 2016.
According to police spokesperson cap-tain Gerda Swart, the Jeffreys Bay PoliceStation have several operations plannedfor this year. “They already started to im-
plement some of these plans,” says Swart.Plans to combat crime effectively in-
clude increased visibility, visits to shop-ping malls, roadblocks and pamphlet dis-tribution.“We will furthermore continue with
our stop-and-search operations,” saysSwart.“There are also several operations
planned by our national office, which weimplement on a local level.”

Festvive seasonstats sizzleFOUNTAINS Mall in Jeffreys Bay boomedthis festive season, drawing record turnouts.According to Fountains Mall General Man-
ager, Jeanette du Toti, the mall, now in itseighth year, posted an increase in both foottraffic and turnover for theDecember 2015 pe-riod.“Visitors to the Mall increased by 4.1%,
while its turnover increased by 3% year onyear,” says Du Toit. “We are extremelypleased. If you take into account that theMalldid not have the added benefit of visitors who
visited theMall last year during the three dayperiod without electricity, the fact that Bay-west Mall was not open last year Decemberand the beautiful weather which normally af-fects the number of visitors, the Mall per-formed exceptionally well.”Fountains Mall was blessed once again in
that they did not experience any armed rob-beries, and even the number of petty theft in-cidents declined from the previous year, ac-cording to Du Toit. She is cautiously optimistic about the
prospects for 2016. “Our economy is going tobe volatile for at least the next couple ofmonths, impacting on distributable incomeand consumer spend. We expect lower profitmargins and turnovers to be flat compared toprevious years. However, with both a newhospital and high school under constructionon the Mall’s front steps, a whole lot of newmarketing opportunities and increased cus-tomer base will be created.Fountains Mall will continue with their
marketing efforts in 2016 to attract visitors to
the Mall. “The very popular teas for our pen-sionerswill resume in February,withmonth-ly events being planned and even a competi-tion on the cards later in the year,” says DuToit.. According to Kouga Municipal spokesper-son Laura-Leigh Randall, Dolphin Beach aswell as all the surrounding beaches in theKouga region, were the fullest they have beenin a number of years.“All our caravan parks were fully booked,”
says Randall.

THORN bushes that have mysteriously found their wayto Kabeljauws Beach more than four months ago are notonly a sight for sore eyes, but they are also a danger forbeach goers.
Despite people reporting this to the KougaMunicipali-ty on several occasions, nothing has been done to date.
According to resident Brian Esselaar (84), who has dai-ly picked up rubbish and debris at Kabeljauws beach foralmost the past two years, the thorn bushes are now half-way covered in sand - making the removal of the thornbushes even more difficult.“This poses a danger for all beachgoers as the thorns
can injure them at any time,” says Esselaar. No comment could be obtained from the municipality
at the time of going to print.

Eskompower outage to affect whole Kougathis Saturday
ROAD users of the stretch between Patensie town andRamaphosa Village will no longer have to worry aboutdarkness on the road, particularly at night.
The Kouga municipality recently switched on 19streetlights along the 1,2km road which is the main en-trance to Ramaphosa.
The R350 000 project took longer than initially planneddue to the paving of the road and the municipality givingway to the paving contractor to finish first.
Speaking during the switch-on ceremony Ward 10 andInfrastucture, Planning and Development PortfolioCouncillor Patrick Kota thanked the community for be-ing patient and understanding that both the paving workand the street lights were of importance.
“We have had a few incidences of crime, especially atnight, and motorists complaining about poor visibilityalong this curvaceous stretch,” he said.
Kota added that the municipality was under obligationto improve the community’s infrastructure and there-fore their livelihoods as well.

TWO dynamic women - the one diplomaticwith the pen and the other with the spokenword - are using the power of social media tofight crime.
Jeffreys Bay residents Carine White andSuzanne Kruger are using Facebook as anew formof neighbourhoodwatch and in do-ing so are bringing homeowners closer thanever. In a bit to make Jeffreys Bay a safer place
for everyone, White and Kruger created theJBay Crime Watch Facebook page to helpmake locals more aware of what is happeningin their community.“Facebook is the bestmedia, inmy opinion,
for opening up the lines of communicationand to spread amessage in record time,” saysWhite. “The JBayWatch Facebook page is anexcellent vehicle for the proactive targetingof crime and issues of concerns to the localcommunity.”Within two days of launching the page on
January 2 this year, 1 200 people joined andthey are currently boasting 1 515 members.“It is encouraging to see the ongoing com-
mitment of the community,” says Kruger.According toKruger, they tell it as it is. “We
would like to encourage freedom of speechwhich is exercised responsibly and fairly. In-formation shared on the pagemust bewith re-gard to crime and crime related matters af-fecting Jeffreys Bay. The aim is to share help-ful information regarding the crime situationlocally, to warn other residents of any suspi-cious behaviour and to try and make JeffreysBay a safer place.“We do not protect anybody, but ask for no
slamming matches.”According to Kruger, they do not post any
sensitive information that will have a nega-tive affect on crime prevention operationsspearheaded by the police or any other crimefighting organisation.“We only post information about incidents
that already occurred,” says Kruger.White says: “We would like to encourage as
many people as possible to join the JBayCrimeWatch Facebook page. The more mem-bers, the more information we will be able toshare. When it comes to fighting crime, infor-mation is king.”For more information, contact Kruger at

Volgens Carelsen was dié twee items gro-
Besoek die Humansdorp Museum by 17

nou vinnig ’n paar lande mielies wil plant.“Mielies moes al ’nmaand gelede klaar geplant gewees

Suid-Afrikaanse vleisprodusente oopgaan.Volgens Gerhard Schutte, uitvoerende
