OLD and outdated electrical infrastruc-ture, leaving residents in the dark on nu-merous occasions, might soon be some-thing of the past.

Over the past few months, residents ofJeffreys Bay and surrounding areas havebeen plagued by electricity outages, but ac-cording to municipal spokesperson Mfun-do Sobele, these outages were unavoidableas upgrades and maintenance work neededto be done on transformers in the area.

The Kouga Municipality has earmarkedR9 million to upgrade the region’s electrici-ty network this financial year.

This budget is a continuation of the mu-nicipality’s ongoing investment in electri-city distribution infrastructure.

“The issue of old electricity infrastruc-ture is a general problem for the country

as a whole, and Kouga is no exception,”said municipal spokesperson, Mfundo So-bele.

According to Sobele, apart from outda-ted infrastructure, the rapid growth in thepopulation over the past few years, addedan extra demand on electricity supply.

“To ensure that we continue to supplyelectricity to our communities as efficient-ly as possible, we as a municipality haveinstalled several new transformers and arealso doing maintenance work on a regularbasis,” said Sobele.

“Over the past three years, we have spentR17 million on upgrades of our transfor-mers and general maintenance. Our elec-tricity maintenance budget for this yearstands at R9 million and we are working ongetting more funding from additionalsources such as the Department of Ener-gy. All these attempts are done to ensurethat we deliver quality electrical service.”

NEARLY 500 underprivilegedchildren from an informal settle-ment in Jeffreys Bay will soon beable to attend their very own pri-mary school, situated right ontheir doorstep.

After 55 months of meetings anddiscussions, construction on the firstprimary school in Ocean View is setto start in the next month or two.

According to Johan Vos, the dri-ving forcebehind theplanned school, they hope to receive the green lightfrom the municipality to start build-ing the school in September or Octo-ber this year.

The new school, that will be buildat a cost of R25 million on the pieceof ground opposite the road to Mari-

na Martinique, will accommodate amaximum of 450 learners from GradeR to Grade 7 with a maximum of 20to 25 learners per class. School feesof R60 per month per child will be ap-plicable, and only children from in-formal settlements may apply to at-tend the school.

“Our school is a private school forunderprivileged children. Buildinghave not even started and we alreadyhave a waiting list,” said an excitedVos.

According to Vos, the whole ideabehind the primary school startedwith five children six years ago.

Co-founders of Victory4All (V4All)Projects, Vos and his wife Astrid, first came to Jeffreys Bay in Novem-ber 2002. Touched by the great needin the community, they started V4Allsix months later.

“In 2003 and 2004 we just walked

through the informal settlement totalk, and pray and bless the people. In May 2005 we started our Vic-tory4All Christian School, situatedin our worship centre in Tokyo Sex-wale, with a mere five children,” saidVos.

“During the years the number oflearners have grown to such an ex-tend that we realised that our cur-rent building will be too small to ac-commodate a complete primaryschool. In February 2008 we had ourfirst meeting with the municipalityto enquire about the 3 hectare pieceof land in Ocean View. Now, after 55months of meetings and discussionsand a lot of trouble, we hope to getthe green light inSeptember fromthemunicipality to ‘bless’ the childrenwith a new building.”

Construction will take between 12and 18 months.

MARISKA SPOORMAKER

Ek sal graag kommentaar wil hoorvan Kouga se media verteenwoordig-er in die verband, of is stilbly ookmaar ’n antwoord.

Prys stygings

Vra maar net van Jeffreysbaaiskryf: Ek het vandag my gestremdeparkering permit by die verkeers-afdeling op Humansdorp uitgeneem.

Groot was my verbasing toe ekR111 vir dié permit moes betaal.

ONE of only two sunny days ofthe week belonged to thethird Enid Pretorius Proper-

ties Trail Walk & Run, which tookplace on Women’s Day, August 9.

Continuous rain over the last fewweeks made various areas inaccessi-ble, and the unspoilt beauty ofMostertshoek had to be replaced bythe tranquillity of St Francis Field, re-sulting in a slightly shortened dis-tance, only 20km.

The event kicked off at 9am when106 runners and walkers left the EnidPretorius Properties offices in the Vil-lage Centre. They followed the mar-kers through the Village to the Gran-ny’s Pool and used the Two Harbour

Walk to get to the first water andcheck point at Chez Patrick, Port StFrancis.

From there they continued towardsShark Point, but had to climb a steepdune to get onto the Cape St Francisbeach. The second water and checkpoint was at the lighthouse.

At Sunset rock, the third waterpoint, athletes turned north and pro-ceeded on the old Humansdorp RoadintoStFrancisField.Onceat themainentrance to this airfield, they only had5km more to go to the finish line. Run-ners from afar as Johannesburg andPort Elizabeth paid St Francis a spe-cial visit to compete in this scenicevent, and agreed they will be backnext year.

The overall winner was Deon Zeeliefrom Port Elizabeth, who finished in1 hour 31 minutes. Right behind him
