Official Newsletter of the Knights of Columbus of Missouri “One Family United” JUNE 2020 Knights of Columbus Charity ~ Unity ~ Fraternity ~ Patriotism Newsletter STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR MICHAEL AUCHLY VOLUME 6, NO 12 STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR DOUG KISSINGER STATE FAITH DIRECTOR LUCAS VOLKMAN I can’t hardly believe June is already upon us! Wow, time has flown by even with this quarantine thing. Even though we only have one month left in this fraternal year that doesn’t mean we take it easy and wait for next year. We have forms to complete, awards to apply for, members to recruit, programs to be planned and summer fun to be had! As you read the Director’s articles in this newsletter, you will see that they are already planning for next year which is what your council and auxiliary should also be doing. Don’t look at this as the end of a fraternal year but as beginning of a new year and a chance to keep things building up for the next fraternal year. Laying the ground work now will only pay dividends this fall. If you have not submitted your Columbian Award Application (#SP-7) you need to do so as early as possible this month. The requirements for this award have been adjusted due to the restrictions caused by Coronavirus which should make it easier to qualify. It is officially due by June 30 but just in case there might be an issue with it get it in early so that you will have time to make any needed corrections in order to qualify. Do not wait until the last minute to fill this out as the form is completely different this year so planning to copy what you did last year will not work this year. Election season is already upon us. All Councils and Assemblies should have received postcards to fill out to update your Directory information. Please fill those out and return them as soon as possible. Lucas needs to have those back by the deadline date of June 20th so that he can ensure the directory is as accurate as possible. This information can also be entered online, by going to mokofc.org. On the home page go to Missouri State Council forms and then Council and Assembly information and either fill out the Council form or the Assembly form. Please do not write “same as last year” as we want to make sure that all information is accurate and up to date without any assumptions. Lastly I would like to take a moment to recognize my fellow Directors, and some of the hardest working men who have dedicated the time necessary to run their programs at the highest level. Doug Kissinger – Membership; Brian Ziegler – R.I.B.; Mike Tesmer – Life; Lucas Volkman – Faith; Chris Teel – Community; and Peter Nicastro – Family. You all have made my job much easier, and I wanted to publicly acknowledge you. I would like to thank State Deputy Hawkins for his leadership and for giving me the opportunity to serve as your State Program Director for the past two years, but I would also like to thank each one of you for everything you did to help make this a successful fraternal year. I will be moving on to be Membership Director for State Deputy-elect Mike Grudzinski and look forward to finding new ways to help grow the order. As always, I remind you to CELEBRATE EVERYTHING! We continue to have a strong response to the Supreme Online Exemplifications. Over the past month over 400 men from Missouri have attended the Online Exemplifications, with over 300 Knights advancing to the Third Degree of our Order. These numbers include 76 new Mis- souri Knights. Supreme continues to hold Online Exempli- fications on Thursday evenings as we continue into the month of June. Missouri will be holding Online Exemplifications on Sunday, June 7th at 7:00 pm with Supreme Director, PSD, Mick Gilliam as the Honoree, and Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:00 pm with State Deputy Bob Hawkins as the Honoree. Please take advantage of these online opportunities. As parishes open back up in June, and in person attendance is allowed at mass, many Councils have scheduled live Exemplifications in their parish. If you can schedule a live Exemplification in your parish, please do so as soon as possible. Let your parish community know that the Knights of Columbus are there, stronger than ever. Heading into June we need to recruit about 300 new members to achieve Circle of Honor. Being membership active in your parish is a great way to jump start your Council as we head back to normal operations. At the beginning of this fraternal year State Deputy Hawkins dedicated this year to PSD Mick Gilliam who has served on the Supreme Board of Directors for 10 years. Mick was selected because of the strength of Missouri attaining Circle of Honor for many years. Mick’s term is coming to an end this year and we have not achieved Circle of Honor during his term. Let’s send Mick out a winner. To help, the State is offering the following incentives to Councils. For every member a Council brings in during the month of June the State Council will give that Council $15. They will also be entered in a drawing for $250. If you bring in 5 members in June your Council will receive a check for $75 and have 5 chances to win $250. In addition we have almost 100 Councils that have not brought in a new member yet this Fraternal Year. To encourage those Councils to recruit and become membership active, they will also be entered in a seperate drawing for $250. If your Council has not recruited a member yet this fraternal year and recruits a member in June, you will receive a check for $15 and be entered into both of the $250 drawings. We can make this happen, but we have to start now. Call those gentlemen that you know that aren’t currently Knights. Now is the best time to join. I urge you to continue to step up as Knights. Continue to check on your Brothers and their families. Come to the aid of your parishoners and neighbors. Show by your example what it means to be a Knight in Missouri. Thank you for all you do for the Knights of Columbus and please be safe, and recruit a new member today. Please keep praying for a cure for the virus and to keep all our health profes- sionals safe. State Athletic Chairman, Ennis Wm Hinkebein, II We are almost there, the last month of the fraternal year! As I write my final newsletter to you as faith director, we can certainly see how this fraternal year has not been without its challenges. As you go to fill out your Columbian Award Form you might be having issues with the Spiritual Reflection Ac- tivity. Maybe your council pro- moted a retreat, a spiritual work- shop/conference or something teaching about the faith at your parish at some point in the fraternal year. If around ten people affiliated with the Knights attended as a re- sult, you can use this as your Spiri- tual Reflection Activity. Now, per- haps you are stuck with nothing to put on the Columbian Award form and its June or want to do some- thing to bolster people’s faith. What you can do is get a remote activity together. You could use a remote meeting tool or send something out electronically through email or so- cial media. Rick Jones will have some ideas for you as well. Be sure to fill out the Fra- ternal Programs Report Form (#10784) and then insert the activ- ity into the Columbian Award form. Let me know if you have questions. Each of our dioceses need funds to continue their efforts of promot- ing vocations among the young – please contribute to the Missouri Religious Vocations Fund if you have not already, it’s not too late. Contact chairman Joe Stoverink for more information. Thank you for all your work this fraternal year with the Faith activi- ties! Do continue to pray for the success of your parishes, councils, families and for the Church along with an end to the Coronavirus. Please pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and our founder, Fr. McGivney, we can indeed work to build up the Church in our com- munities.

STATE LIFE DIRECTORMIKE TESMER

Our Mission, Defending Life

FAMILY LIFE DIRECTORPETER NICASTRO

Since this is my last newsletter to you asState Life Director, I want to thank all of theKnights across Missouri for your dedicationto the support of all Life. Whether it was bysupporting our Meet Life Campaign includ-ing Roses for Life and the Marion Icon/SilverRose, Special Olympics of Missouri and also

our fallen brother Knights. I want to thank my Chairman, Greg Elsey –Meet Life, Ed Spence – Roses for Life, John Clarke – Marian Icon/SilverRose, Lou Holtman – Special Olympics of Missouri and Mike Deamos– Sympathy Card for a job well done! Thanks to State Deputy BobHawkins for his trust and support in me as a State Director.

On the SOMO Training for Life Campus, we are so close to finishingour $1.2 Million pledge that ends June 30th. Thank you to every Counciland individual that has made this possible! Maybe your Council will helpus cross the finish line by donating an extra $100, $200 or maybe even$500? Updates to the rebuilding after the tornado can be found at theSOMO website, HYPERLINK “https://somo.org/campus” https://somo.org/campus and the report is that it will be opening soon. Greatnews! If you want to make a personal donation to the TLC, you can doit online at: HYPERLINK “http://www.continuetogive.com/trainingforlife” www.continuetogive.com/trainingforlife.

On the Meet Life side, I recently met with Vitae founder CarlLandwehr and he shared some interesting news with me along with anew strategy they are developing. The interesting news came from astudy from the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) on Pregnancy ResourceCenters around the nation. Although this study was in 2017, it shows theimpact of PRC’s on our communities. Carly thinks if the study was donetoday that the numbers would be even much higher. We know that inMissouri, we support our PRC’s with support and ultrasounds. Here isthe data:

In 2017, pregnancy centers provided almost 2,000,000 people withfree services, with estimated community cost savings of at least $161million annually. 2,752 center locations nationwide provide vital ser-vices including medical services, parenting programs, and sexual riskavoidance education. More than seven in 10 locations offer free ultra-sounds (up 24 percent since 2010). 400,100 hours of free services werecontributed by credentialed nurse sonographers and registered diagnos-tic medical sonographers in 2017. 100 mobile units with ultrasounds areon the road to bring services to women out in the community. 30,000contacts per month reach Heartbeat International’s Option Line hotlineand email/chat lines. 67,400 volunteers serve pregnancy centers, includ-ing an estimated 7,500 medical professionals who freely give of theirtime and skills. Centers carried out 679,600 free pregnancy tests in 2017.295,900 moms and dads attended parenting courses. These are incred-ible statistics and show the importance of our PRC’s! We don’t of coursesee Planned Parenthood offering help like this.

On the new strategy, they are developing a program that is based onArchbishop Naumann of Kansas City Kansas’s program of Walkingwith Moms. This program will use digital advances to identify womenthat might be pregnant, communicate to them hope, connect them to aPRC, encourage them to choose life and mentoring. This program workswell with the Knights strategy to advance the Culture of Life. So, we arestill in need of resources for our Meet Life Campaign and I encourageyour Councils to give a donation to Life! By the way, personal donationsto the Meet Life Phase II can be made online at: HYPERLINK “http://www.continuetogive.com/meetlifep2” www.continuetogive.com/meetlifep2. Vivat Jesus!

It’s June: School is out for…who knows how long. That meansI don’t have to share my kitchentable with my kids, except forbreakfast & lunch, as their sum-mer projects can happen else-where. Outside, even.

I hope that your Councils arepaying heed to theLeave NoNeighbor Behindplan for Coun-cil activities during the pandemic, andreaching out regularly to ourBrother Knights, their widowsand families, and also our priests, and make sure that they are doingokay. We strive to build a frater-

nal brotherhood, and must makesure that our brothers and fathersare not isolated.

Remember thatFood forFamilieshas no deadline, eitherin when a Council might hold afood drive or help a food charity inits community, or when to file –but soon thereafter – the Food forFamilies application to receive apartial refund from SupremeCouncil for every $500 donated or1,000 pounds of food given. Thehistoric rise in unemploymentmean that many people need ourhelp.

TheFamily Fully Alivethemefor June is Self-Giving Love, what noted apologist CS Lewiscalls the greatest of the fourloves, agapeorcaritas. It’s per-fect thatcaritasis the theme afterlast month’s,hope, its predeces-sor in the theological virtues.Thefamily project for the month is toresearch and make sacrifice beads, remembering that the Sacred Heartof Jesus calls on us to be servantsfor others.

Just announced, our May fra-ternal recognition winners.TheKnight of the MonthTomZarlingo of Wm. Barnwell Coun-cil 263 in Perryville, and theYouthof the Monthis Dylan Doak, fromBp. Lillis #4300 in Lexington.James & Debbie Klug from As-cension Council #11139 wastheState Family of the Month.

Unfortunately, some sadnews: because of the Coronavirusquarantine restrictions, thes t a t e S o f t b a l l , G o l f ,andHorseshoetournaments haveall been canceled for 2020. Theywill return at this year’s formerlocations, next year.

The stateBarbeque Contestisstill on for July 24 – 25, subject tofuture government and Supremerules, but the Perryville picnicgrounds have ample space for ev-eryone to socially distance.TheRoyalsandCardinalsgamesare still dependent on whateverplan made by MLB, which mightbe announced soon.

Stay safe in whatever you do!
