Official Newsletter of the Knights of Columbus of Missouri “Protecting, Saving Lives and Changing Lives” APRIL, 2017 Knights of Columbus Charity ~ Unity ~ Fraternity ~ Patriotism Newsletter GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR DOUG KISSINGER VOLUME 3, NO 10 MEMBERSHIP DIR. MIKE GRUDZINSKI COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR JOHN MAUTINO I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our State convention in Jefferson City, April 21, 22, and 23. We will follow the same format as the most recent Conventions. Following mass on Friday evening we will have our programs on display in the hotel atrium. This is a great time to see the programs up close and talk to the Chairmen and Directors. As I travel the state and talk to Brother Knights there are always questions about how a certain program works. Friday evening in the Atrium is the time to get your questions answered about the programs from the people that administer them. Take advantage of this opportunity. I love the interaction between Knights and Ladies in the atrium as they learn about all the great programs we run in the State of Missouri. We also recognize Council and Auxiliary achievements. It might be recognition for the great job your Council or Auxiliary is doing or you may see the great job someone else is doing. This is your chance to find out what others are doing and ask questions. Saturday morning will feature the business sessions for both the Knights and Ladies. Then on Saturday afternoon we will feature a workshop format that is open to everyone. We try to pick topics and highlight programs that are of particular interest to the majority of attendees. Workshop topics include: Ways Your Insurance Agent Can Help You and Your Council” “YOUTH PROTECTION PROGRAM. KEEPING EVERY YOUTH SAFE” “An Exciting New Direction For The R.I.B. Program” “The Importance Of Promoting Vocations In Your Parish” “RECRUITING YOUNGER MEMBERS. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN” “SHINE A LIGHT ON MEMBER MANAGEMENT. HOW TO MAKE IT SIMPLE” “Building The Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish” “INCORPORATING FAMILIES INTO YOUR COUNCILS ACTIVITIES” “HOW TO FILL OUT THE NEW SP-7 AND OTHER FORMS THAT GIVE YOU PROBLEMS” “MEMBERSHIP ESSENTIALS” “Autograph Session With Special Olympics Athletes”. We hope these topics will interest you and be informative. If you have several attendees from your Council or Auxiliary, try to divide up and cover as many workshops as you can. This is your Convention. Saturday evening will feature the Convention Mass and Banquet. At the Banquet there will be special recognition for many outstanding achievements including our State Program Service Award winners. This is one of the highlights of the Fraternal year. See you in Jefferson City. RCIA Candidates / HS Gradu- ates / College Graduates – Now is the time to be talking with male RCIA candidates about joining the Knights after the join the Church. These men are excited about our faith and are looking for an outlet to express their enthusi- asm, and the Knights are the outlet they need to express their enthusiasm in a tangible way. Make sure you talk to all male RCIA sponsors as well, and ask them to join, if they are not already Knights. Now is the also the time to ask those young men graduating from high school to join the Knights. Many of them will be going off to college, so the time to get them in is now! Please remember college graduates as well. Many of them are now ready to settle down after their time in college, and we can help them to either strengthen their bonds to the Church, or if they may have fallen away from an active practice of their faith, to get them back into the fold. Membership in the Knights can often times be the catalyst which reignites a man’s interest into actively participating in the Church. Toward this end, the State Council has an Incentive in that we will be selecting 20 new members who take their Admission Degree prior to June 15 and fall into any of the categories above – RCIA member (who joined the church this year) or HS or College Graduates (who graduated this year). Each winner, and his proposer, will receive $25. A form documenting this must also be submitted, and that form is available on the State Website www.mokofc.org under the “Forms” area. Or you may contact me at [email protected] and I will get you a copy. For all Delegates and Attendees at our upcoming State Conven- tion, please stop by the Membership table in the Atrium on Friday evening. Myself, and members of the Membership Team, would be very happy to talk to you. Plus we will have copies of some Supreme recruitment brochures which you can take. We all want our councils to succeed, and conducting service programs and being active recruit- ers are both crucial to a council’s short-term and long-term success. Did You Know… In 2015-2016, Missouri Knights of Columbus • …gave out $11,000 in College Scholarships to students across the state. • …hosted fun events for Knights and their families including St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals baseball games, and a Missouri Mavericks Hockey game. Additional State Incentive Councils: Church Drive / Admission Degree Incentive Through April 30, for every Admission Degree hosted by a council which brings in at least one new member, that council will be entered into a drawing for $300. Four winners will be chosen at random. A Form 450 MUST be submitted in order to be eligible. Remember, you should have at least two Admission Degrees scheduled in conjunction with your Spring Church Drive. The more Admissions Degrees you hold, the better your chances are for winning! If you ever have membership questions, please contact your DD, Regional Membership Chairman or any Membership Team member. We are here to help! We have not yet received Final Reports from all of the Councils. It’s looking like we will have another good year, but we need to have all of the Final Reports (and checks) in order to know. Even if your Council did not have a Drive this year, please let us know. Contact your please contact your Chairman, Dave Bramman (East) or Roland Cretel, Jr. (West) with any questions or last minute help in preparing the Final Report, submitting the Drive pro- ceeds, or completing your Council’s Turnaround Funds Disbursement forms. If your Council didn’t’ have a Drive this year, these guys stand ready to help your Council prepare for a Drive for next year. Finally, please keep in mind that all funds generated from the Drive must pass through Columbian Charities. This is not only important from account- ing and legal perspectives, but it is also critical in order to maintain the integrity of this program. All Councils should have re- ceived the appeal letters for Agape House/Prison Concern, and the American Wheelchair Mission. Please consider making a donation to these worthwhile programs. Please let Life Services Chairman Matt Gray know if your Council knows of any- one who needs a wheelchair. The next shipment should arrive this month, so we will be eager to get them distributed to those in need. Also, if your Council has room to store some wheelchairs, please let Matt or I know. We want to make it as easy as possible to get these dis- tributed. The Summer Games for Special Olympics-Mis- souri are scheduled for June 2 – 4th in Springfield. Please contact Chair- man Lou Holtmann about ways that you and your Council can help. I hope to see many of you at the Convention later this month. Please stop by and see your Community Activities team in the foyer on Fri- day afternoon, in the workshops on Saturday, or in the hospitality room. We are eager to get feedback and help! Our 116th State Convention isright around the corner and I can vouchfor the State Officers and Directors thatwe are working hard to make this an-other great convention. We hope thatyou can gain some very valuable infor-mation at the convention to have a great

finish for your Council goals. Now is the time to make sure that you have notified Larry

This way your Brother Knight’s name canbe read at the Memorial Mass on Sunday morning of the Convention. The State Council does not get alerted when your Financial Secretarysends a form 100 into Supreme to notify them of his passing, so be sureto get the information to Larry. Hope to see you at the State Convention!Vivat Jesus!

I hope that all of you reading

this newsletter are having a

blessed Lent. One of the thingsthat we do during Lent is reflect

on our lives and how we can be

better Catholics. As leaders withinthe Knights of Columbus, we have

been entrusted with awesome re-

sponsibilities as the caretakers ofour positions to improve on what

we inherited. All of us must look

at ways to better our councils anduse our efforts within the Knights

to bolster Holy Mother Church.

Our state youth team is doing justthat, and we encourage all of you

to do the same on the council or

district level. In the upcoming April issue

of the Mariner there will be a list

of the winners of both the stateposter and free throw competi-

tions. Please read my article to

see more about those activities.Owing to the publication dead-

line, the list of state scholarship

winners will not be published inthe Mariner. Before listing the

winners, I would like to thank

chairman Mike Deamos and histeam for going through the appli-

cations. We received a large num-

ber and several difficult decisionshad to be made as many of the

applicants were well-deserving

of the honor. Here are the win-ners:

It’s hard to believe we are in theheart of the Lenten season. Easter is justaround the corner. Our hope for all is thatyou are having a meaningful Lenten sea-son. For me Lent is the time to focus onwhat can make me a better person. Howcan I make a difference in someone’s life.

We normally give something we love up for Lent. The idea is to donatethe cost of what we gave up to charity. Why not give to Meet Life! Notonly will you be helping to support the elimination of abortion. But youjust may save the life of an infant who would have not had a chancewithout our program.

April is also time for our annual State Convention in Jefferson Cityon the 21st, 22nd and 23rd. As always on Friday evening the Atriumof the Capital Plaza Hotel will be buzzing with exhibits of our programsthe Knights support. Respect Life is no different, our team will againbe there to answer your questions, discuss ways your council orauxiliary can help in the Culture of Life. We may have reached ourfinancial goal, but we are a long way off from ending abortions.

The end of this fraternal year is right around the corner. We arealready moving into the next phase of the Meet Life program. Over thenext several years our goal is raising enough funds to allow Meet Lifeto be self-supporting. We have already received a significant startingdonation to begin the fund. The rest is up to us. While you are at theState Convention, take a moment to talk to our Insurance Agents onhow easy it is to leave a portion of your death benefit for the Meet Lifeendowment.

Because it is Lent, and for me prayer is one of the most powerfultools as Catholics and Knights we have. I would like to post ourPRAYER TO END ABORTION Lord God, I thank you today for thegift of my life, And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I knowthere is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice thatyou have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am readyto do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself never to besilent, never to be passive, and never to be forgetful of the unborn. Icommit myself to be active in the pro-life movement and never to stopdefending life. Until all my brothers and sisters are protected, and ournation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice not just forsome, but for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

See you all at Convention!

Happy Springtime and HappyEaster to everyone! How nice it isto get outside and enjoy the warmweather while possibly doing somework around the house or yard. This is a busy time of the year, even for the Knights of Colum-bus. Our Spring Appeal Letterwritten by Fr. Ron Hoye has beensent and if you don’t already haveit you will be receiving it shortly.Fr. Hoye has done a great job inexplaining in simple terms the re-lationship between your contribu-tions to the Religious InformationBureau (R.I.B.) and how thosefunds are used to support theCatholic Home Study as they pro-vide the study materials and booksto those seeking more informationabout our Catholic Faith. It is through your generous, taxdeductible, contributions to theR.I.B. that we are able to providethe funding which provides theVeritas Series pamphlets fromSupreme free of charge to yourCouncil or Ladies Auxiliary. These funds also make it possiblefor Catholic Home Study to offertheir series of 9 books and studyquestions free of charge to anyonewishing to take the courses. Yourcontributions are also used to ad-vertise the availability of these

books via magazines, newspapersand multiple on-line advertisingmediums. Please take the time toconsider making a donation toR.I.B. via the Spring Appeal Let-ter using the self-addressed enve-lope that was provided with Fr.Hoye’s letter.

April is also the time of yearthat we gather annually for ourMissouri State Convention. Forthose Councils and Auxiliaries thatsubmitted their contributions at orabove their 100% or 125% levelsprior to the March 31 deadlinewill be able to pick up their Circleof Honor Commemorative Cer-tificate of Recognition. GrandKnights whose councils have at-tained 125% of their quota will behonored with the R.I.B. ApostolateCross pin as well. Please remem-ber that your Council or Auxiliaryhas until the end of the fraternalyear (June 30th) to reach it quota. The Circle of Honor designationis a way to recognize those whohave met their goal early. Even ifyou do not receive the Circle ofHonor you can still reach yourquota and earn recognition for yourCouncil or Auxiliaries hard work.

We are busy this month tally-ing up the contributions and pre-paring certificates and plates foryou to pick up at the State Con-vention so please take the time tostop by and see us on Friday nightin the atrium. CHURCH ACTIVITIES DIR.ROCKY GAMBON

It’s spring! For spring breakthis year, Ellen and I took ourtwins to Kansas City, where wevisited some family and friends, splashed at the pool, saw ourBrother Knights in Kansas City’sSt. Patrick’s Day Parade, and tookthem to Kansas City’s World WarI Museum. Of course the story weknow of the First World War wasof the KofC huts, where everyonewas welcome, and everythingfree. We were a little nervous, seven year olds in a museum aboutthe Great War, but the kids werereally engaged by how the warstarted and what drew the UnitedStates into the fight, and we andthey walked away, after we closedthe museum three hours later, witha greater understanding of whattrench warfare was really like forthe soldiers a century ago. Thosesoldiers, sailors and marines weretrue patriots!

I mention the museum, thehuts, and our family because sum-mer is coming, and now is the time

for your Council to plan summerevents that engage not just themen, but also the families who areyour Council members, and yourCouncil’s potential members.Every month, your Council canleverage the Building the Domes-tic Church programs, or designyour own programs, to do some-thing that invites your parish’sfamilies to have fun while per-forming service or building theirown faith in fraternity and fellow-ship with other families and yourBrother Knights. Family men andtheir spouses who are comfortablewith the Knights, our programs, and how membership benefits theirfamilies will be more receptive toan invitation to join our number. When you find a member, or afamily, or a young member ofyour community, worthy of rec-ognition, please tell us all aboutthem in a Family, Knight, or Youthof the Month nomination. We stillonly receive a few nominationsevery second month. Shortly,we’ll be selecting a Family and aYouth of the Year from among themonthly contest winners. Whileany submitted after this newslet-ter will be considered for the pe-riod ending May 31, new winnersare eligible for the annual awardfor next year’s convention. Also, submit a family in your Council tothe Supreme Family of the Monthdrawing, which is not a contest buta random draw where winners re-ceive an elegant Holy Family im-

age from the Supreme Knight. We’ve planned two events for youto join in that fellowship with thebody of larger Knights families.Coming up soon, on June 4, adelicious tailgate outsideKauffman Stadium will precedethe face-off between the Royalsand the Cleveland Indians. Thetailgate will start at 10 am – plentyof time to enjoy fellowship withKnights families – and first pitchis 1:15 pm. Contact Dave Dillonwith your order for one of only250 tickets available for this game,at $36 apiece, including the ticketprice, tailgate, and a $5 donationto Special Olympics. We’ll beseated in sections 403 – 407, onthe third base side.

There’s no space for a tail-gate in St. Louis, but we hope toagain be able to offer some pre-game event away from the sta-dium for families to gather prior tothe September 30 Cardinal gameagainst the Milwaukee Brewers. We’ll be seated in a great space, the shaded left field porch, adja-cent to the luxury boxes and be-low Big Mac Land, and its ScottRolen Bobblehead Day on thepenultimate day of the regular sea-son. First pitch is 3:15 pm firstpitch, at Busch Stadium in St.Louis. 150 tickets are availablefor this game, at only $25 apieceand a $5 donation to the Knightsof Columbus Developmental Cen-ter. Contact me, Peter Nicastro, with your ticket order.

Missouri State Council Ladies Auxiliaries“Helping Knights, Help Others”

Knights and Ladies, Linda and I are excited to see you all at the StateConvention in April. Everyone please be safe and enjoy this Lenten season.

Remember Knights and Ladies, we are here for you ALL, God Bless.

I must say that April is one ofmy favorite months. April is aclear sign that we have let go ofwinter and everything begins toturn green again. Most often, Eas-ter tends to fall in the month ofApril and this year is no excep-tion. From the memories of thesacrifice of Jesus brought forth inthe Friday Stations of the Crossto Easter Sunday when Jesus risesonce more, April can be an espe-cially spiritually uplifting month. With that in mind, I want to leteveryone know of plans for theupcoming State Convention inJefferson City. On Saturday, April22nd, State Chaplain Fr. RickJones will conduct a Rosary start-ing at 7:30am.

Following the Rosary, Fr.Jones will place the Blessed Sac-rament in the prayer chapel forAdoration. All Knights, theirwives and family members areinvited to come and spend sometime in silent prayer with the

Blessed Sacrament. The chapel islocated near the south end of theCapital Plaza. Exposition willcontinue until 4:00pm. I hope youtake some time to come be withthe Lord to pray, reflect, and ap-preciate all he has done for you.

I want to thank everyone thatpassed on the word to your SOR orParish School of Religion to applyfor a $500 or $1,000 Msgr.Mancuso Catholic EducationGrant. This year we had anotherrecord turnout of applications. Thecommittee will be hard at workgoing through these applicationsand qualifying the amounts re-quested. The list of grant recipi-ents will be available at the StateConvention and monies distrib-uted hopefully shortly after.

While numbers are not yetavailable, I would like to thankevery single council for their will-ingness to support seminarians andpostulates throughout the statewith the Refund Support Voca-tions Program (RSVP). I’ve beentold that Missouri often rankspretty high on the list for RSVPsupport and I personally thank youfor an outstanding job. I know thatmany of you are supporting semi-narians or postulates and I thinkthis number will even be higherthis fraternal year. The refundamount from Supreme was over$20,000 and wouldn’t it have beengreat if this amount would havebeen donated to our own state pro-

gram, the Missouri Religious Vo-cation Fund?

And speaking of the MissouriReligious Vocation Fund(MRVF), your appeal letter shouldnow be in the hands of your GrandKnight, Ladies Auxiliary Presi-dent and Faithful Navigator.

If you did not get your appealletter, please let me know [email protected] andI will get one to you. ChairmanJoe Stoverink has been personallycontacting all of the Grand Knightsafter the appeal letters were sentout throughout the year. Joe hasreported that there is still somemisconception that a donation tothe RSVP Supreme program quali-fies for a donation to the MRVF.

This is not the case. TheMRVF is a separate State Pro-gram to help fund future voca-tions by sending donations equallyto each of our four Dioceses. Please prayerfully consider eithersending in the $.50 per membergoal or by making a larger com-mitment to vocations by sendingin $1.00 per member. Your dona-tion can be sent to Joe Stoverink at2341 Burns Avenue, Overland MO63113.

Once again, I thank all of youfor your hard work and dedicationto the church. Without you, theKnights of Columbus could notdo the great work that they do.Thank you so much and may Godbless each of you.
