State Chaplain Message

As Knights of Columbus, we constantly strive to deepen our identity as Catholic men. This is why I have been writing these monthly articles on the characteristics of authentic masculinity as revealed to us in the person of Jesus. I hope this series has prompted some deep reflection leading to the greater appropriation of our manly identity in Christ. At the Summer Leadership Meeting, Bishop Thomas Daly (Bishop of Spokane) spoke convincingly

about our need for humility. His words led me to reflect on the humility of the Lord Jesus, especially demonstrated in his relationship with the Father and his interactions with the apostles. Many wellmeaning individuals think of humility as selfhatred, as if one would have to say, “I am dirt; I am slime; I’m a rotten, nogood sinner; there is no good in me,” etc. To my knowledge, there is no directive given in Scripture or Tradition to abuse ourselves in such a way. Doing so would tend to make us deny the value of human life and the goodness that is in us by virtue of being created in the image and likeness of God. It could also lead us to overlook the tremendous gifts that God entrusts to us. Yes, there must be a place for the confession of our sinfulness and guilt; humility does require the admission of our weakness. However, this cannot be the essence of humility. Why? The Lord Jesus was humble, and he had not a single sin to confess! The man who is authentically humble acknowledges the good that is in his life: his abilities, the good deeds he does, his strength of character, and so on. However—and this is the key to humility—he does not take credit for any of it. He credits God as the source for every ounce of good in his life. This is true even for Jesus. He knew that it was his union with the Father that was the foundation for everything. All this leads us to the conclusion that authentic masculinity does not consist in being a selfmade man. Rather, true manliness involves increased reliance on God as the source of all the good in our life. A manly man has no place in his heart for pride that would lead him to claim superiority over another. After all, the humble man recognizes that, even though he works hard to improve himself and do good to others, it is ultimately God who produces whatever is good in his life. The fruits of humility are manifold: increased peace and joy, increased gratitude, growing trust and hope in God, and better interaction with other people, to name just a few. The most fundamental effect of our growth in humility is our increased capacity for charity. Father Gabriel of Saint Mary Magdalene (a Carmelite priest who died in 1953) wrote: “Charity, it is true, is superior to [humility] because it gives us divine life; yet, humility is of great importance because it is the virtue which clears the ground to make room for grace and charity.” In other words, if we seek humility, we give God permission to clear away whatever in our life is an obstacle to the flourishing of divine love (charity) in us. Brothers, our first principle is charity. Without humility, there is no charity. Let’s endeavor to embrace the spirit of humility, not only to enable greater works of charity in the Order, but also to strengthen our identity as men fashioned after the humble Heart of Jesus. Fr. Kenneth St. Hilaire State Chaplain

State Secretary Message

My Brothers All, Our State Warden sure did a great job of setting up the Summer Leadership Meeting. Good guest speakers, a great address by Bishop Daly from the Spokane Diocese, and a lot of informative workshops for attendees to learn from. I gave a little talk about being "charming" in your new role as

a leader in the State, and I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you and help you achieve all of your goals for the year. The first bill for the year has already been sent to the Councils and it is mostly for the Liability Insurance that every Council should carry. It is a great deal at $1.10 per member and if you need to get a "Proof Of Insurance Certificate" before a function, your contact is: Alicia Thompson Payne West Insurance Company 509-946-6161 [email protected] Our State Deputy is very deserving of a great year, so do your part and help him make his goal. Ask that guy that you have been thinking about asking to join the Order. We all benefit from growth. God Bless!

Worthy Sirs, Although Summer is upon us this is not the time to slow down. Even while many are on vacation those still at home can work on important issues…like getting us off to a great start. Bring in a new member this month.

Unless you plan to be “Grand Knight for Life”, you might want to put more effort into recruiting as it is the lifeblood of your Council and the Order. Surprise the State Deputy this month and go ask that man you’ve always meant to but never did. Even you might be surprised… Vivat Jesus!

Brothers, The Star Track membership program this fraternal year is being revamped. It was such a great membership idea that CBS Studio web crawlers decided to protest our program. Despite my soiled knees, I was informed we must Cease and Desist the Star Track theme with its correlation to Star Trek properties. It was something so innocent, and nothing was being sold…who would have thought. I guess I should have and I take full responsibility. This program was scrutinized by Supreme, Office Depot, Great Impact, our membership and no one caught the copyright infringement. As I stopped to take a long look, I could see it. Timing was bad given the remake of Star Trek. Quite frankly, I didn’t know they were doing a remake. Guess that tells you how little I pay attention to the media. CBS Studios has given us permission to use the Star Track Recruiter Program as long as it is not in association with Star Trek properties. It’s comforting to know they do not own the rights to the word Track. We will still be promoting a space theme and using government owned photos that we as tax payers pay for. The Star Track Recruiter pin will bear our KofC emblem, which hopefully no one objects too. The difference will hardly be noticeable. I’m paranoid now and that is not a good feeling to me. Once the new pins are in hand, we will send to new member recruiters for July. Please follow the plan by submitting the brochure application to Marcel Bergeron (Libra; balance and scales). Lesson learned and we will prevail.

Brother Knights, We have a revised Monthly Service Report (MSR) this year. Refer to my General Program Director article for an overview. New this year is the nesting of all of our six program categories with the Supreme Council’s Building the Domestic Church Initiative while Strengthening our Parish. As we plan our program activities for the year, we need to see our programs and membership through the lens of Building the Domestic Church (BDC). Thank you to all who attended and made the 2016 Summer Leadership Meeting a big success. Particularly, I want to extend my gratitude to the District Deputies who helped shape the meeting framework this year and the State Program Chairmen and workshop facilitators who led the instruction. I hope you enjoyed the guest speakers and absorbed their points of emphasis. The goal was to energize all fraternal leaders and set the stage for BDC.

As Christ told his apostles, “Freely you have received; now freely give” (Mt 10:8). Let’s take the momentum from our meeting and light our Councils on fire as the new fraternal year kicks off. As I write this, I am preparing to attend the Supreme Convention in Toronto. I hope we bring back some service program awards this year to honor the good works of our Councils. District Deputies who attended the Summer Leader Meeting should contact me soonest if you did not receive your meal receipts. I sent the receipts to your DD alias email address on July 20. Council Spotlight: Pasco Council 1620 is in the spotlight in recognition for its outstanding support of the Summer Leader Meeting. Registration was incredibly smooth. Thank you Pasco Council 1620!

General Programs

Brother Knights, I am keeping much of my July GPD article for August to emphasize the Building the Domestic Church Initiative. A new Service Program year is upon us. It brings excitement and a new beginning. A new beginning in the sense of viewing our service program categories through the lens of the Supreme Council’s new initiative, Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening our Parish (BDC). Not only should our Program Action Plans be intricately linked to this initiative, but our Membership Action Plans should also tie into this initiative. Thus, added focus must be directed to ensure we implement plans that link service programs and membership growth by first assessing the priorities and needs of our parish communities. That implies Council leaders meeting with their pastors now to explain this initiative and relate how our programs can help the pastor achieve his goals. The ultimate objective is to strengthen families through an integrated parish experience of the Knights of Columbus.

I encourage you to become well acquainted with this initiative by going to the following link for all things Domestic Church: www.kofc.org/DomesticChurch. As a result of the BDC initiative, the Washington State Council Monthly Service Report (MSR) has been revised. The first Council MSR is due by August 10, covering activities in July. BDC is nested into each Service Program category (blue highlighted points). To qualify for the BDC points, Councils must answer “Yes” to each qualifying point and also list the program conducted. We will continue to emphasize Strong Visible Programs and the Supreme 8 Featured Programs (green highlighted

points) on the MSR, but we will approach it from the perspective of strengthening the family in concer t with the programs and priorities of our parishes. This does not mean we change everything. Councils are

encouraged to continue many of their great programs and community engagement activities. The difference now is that we are charged to ensure we have a strategy for bringing about the mission and vision for the greater alliance between the Church and the family. In other words, work together for the common purpose of

strengthening our families.

Keep checking the WSC Website for access to the MSR. Updates to the form may cause a delay in form accessibility – please be flexible.

General Programs continued

If you haven’t done so, submit your Council’s Service Program Personnel Report (Form #365), to Supreme soonest. All Chairmen and Director Positions should be filled. Councils will not receive programming information unless this form is submitted. Here are some programs to keep your finger on in the first few months of the Fraternal Year:

1. Soccer Challenge and Citizenship Essay Contest materials should be ordered now. 2. Plan and order materials now for the Order-Wide Church Drive in October. 3. Plan and host a 5th Sunday Rosary Program. 4. Plan a Family activity for the Knights of Columbus Family Week Celebration in August. 5. Plan and order materials for the Coats for Kids program.

** Remember, plan programs and membership activities through the lens of Building the Domestic Church!

Refer to the link I provided above for more information on BDC. With these or similar strong and visible activities during the first two months, assess and plan ahead, promote them in advance, invite parishioners to participate always and encourage men to join the Order during the activities. Then, schedule an Admissions Degree (1st Degree) in August. Special Alert: Prepare now for the Coats for Kids – Black Friday Distribution. We received hundreds of free coats last year. I will ask Councils to submit their proposals in the coming weeks, so get started now by assessing the need in your communities. I will forward you the format to use for your proposal. August Council Spotlight: Pasco Council 1620 for its support of the 2016 Summer Leader Meeting.

Be Men of Action in this Year of Mercy.

God Bless you and all that you do.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR KIM WASHBURN “Spread the Light”

Lt. Libra (Marcel Bergeron) says he hasn’t received but a hand full of Star Track Recruiter pin applications for July. To have a better chance at the Convention drawing, you must fill out your application as the proposer. Once our pins arrive in the coming days, he will be sending out pins, another brochure, congratulatory card and Form 100. Our featured planet this month is Planet Seattle 8437. They brought in 4 new members, mainly from GK Cliff Macaraeg, Cyril and I believe their father Oscar. They are at 80% of quota with 11 months to go. Two moons were in orbit around Seattle, Marysville 7863 (33% of quota) and Federal Way 7908 (21% of quota). Each brought in 3 new members. Two shooting stars appeared at dusk by the name of Jose Sanchez-Jimenez and Harold Balzert each bringing in 3 new members. For the month of July, our jurisdiction brought in 37 new members, one shy of the first payout from Supreme. Even though our quota was 78, it’s still not a bad showing for a summer month. We need a lot more new members so I can shave Eddie’s beard at the Summer Meeting next year. Graphics are still being hammered out, so stay tuned for future Bulletins. Please review the brochure incentives for the year. They are simple and straight forward, but will need refreshing from time to time. With all the suspensions/withdrawals taking place in July, we will need to work even harder to make up the difference. I hope all Councils are done purging their membership roster so we can get back to growing our Order.

Parishes are scheduling their calendars now. Make sure you get a couple of membership drives scheduled so the calendar doesn’t fill up. NOW IS THE TIME. Remember, your District Deputy is there to help you. If he is not being helpful, or you’re not hearing from him, contact the District Deputy Director, Eugene Daly, or any State Officer and we will help. If you are wondering why our Membership Program changed from the Summer Meeting, go to the State Advocate’s report for more information. Let’s “Spread the Light”.

To Be A Patriot Award

Established in 1985, the “To Be A Patriot” Award annually recognizes the three best patriotic programs conducted by Fourth Degree Assemblies each fraternal year Entries are judged at the district, provincial, and international levels. One of the 2015-2016 “To Be A Patriot” Award winners was from Washington State:

The Karol Józef Wojtyła Assembly 3111, Colbert, Washington, won a 2015-2016 “To Be A Patriot” Award for its production of “Once Upon a Mattress.”

By putting on a full-scale production of the musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress, members of Karol Józef Wojtyła Assembly raised $11,000 to pay for 66 beds for 40 refurbished apartment units on a VA medical campus.

The all-male cast of Knights worked hard to memorize the lines and songs, but they were also active in the background, constructing the stage and providing the refreshments sold during intermission. Through their efforts and cooperation with Catholic Charities, they were able to give homeless veterans and their families hope for a

better future.

Community Chairman

Gentlemen, it is time to start off the new fraternal year. The Summer Leadership Meeting gave all of you some very interesting ideas and resources. The time to start planning is now. The better you plan, the better your events will be. The new website is there for all of the members to use. This new website has the contact information that your Council will need this year. Also, do not forget to check out the new Twitter and Facebook accounts. These will provide other ways to stay in touch with the Knights of Columbus. As the State Community Chairman, I am here to assist anyone who needs information or contacts for any of the community programs. Please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or email. I am available to help you and your members obtain Star Council this year, as are all the State Officers and Chairman. Remember to integrate the featured programs from Supreme in planning the events your Council will be doing this year. By doing a featured program and completing all the minimum requirements, you will fulfill the goals set by Supreme. Vince Mansanarez State Community Chairman [email protected] 253.973.2842

Treasures in Heaven “But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

Luke 12:20-21

The final verses of the Gospel reading the fifth Sunday in July calls to mind the same teaching in Matthew, Chapter 6 where our Lord goes on to tell us to “store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” In some contexts, “treasure” can refer to the Eucharist, the Church’s greatest treasure. The Church’s treasury, however, refers to the “spiritual goods of the communion of saints (CCC 1476).”

1475 In the communion of saints, "a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things." In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin. 1476 We also call these spiritual goods of the communion of saints the Church's treasury, which is "not the sum total of the material goods which have accumulated during the course of the centuries. On the contrary the 'treasury of the Church' is the infinite value, which can never be exhausted, which Christ's merits have before God. They were offered so that the whole of mankind could be set free from sin and attain communion with the Father. In Christ, the Redeemer himself, the satisfactions and merits of his Redemption exist and find their efficacy." 1477 "This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are truly immense, unfathomable, and even pristine in their value before God. In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by his grace have made their lives holy and carried out the mission the Father entrusted to them. In this way they attained their own salvation and at the same time cooperated in saving their brothers in the unity of the Mystical Body." In this Year of Mercy, let’s combine works of mercy with storing up treasures in heaven. In a private revelation to St. Faustina, Our Lord said, “I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first - by deed, the second - by word, the third - by prayer” (Diary 742). We hope you were inspired by the Fifth Sunday Rosary to pray as a parish family and add to the Church’s treasury as you prayed for your neighbor. If you did, remember to submit the Fifth Sunday Rosary form to get credit for one of four activities needed for the Columbian award. If you didn’t, mark the other three opportunities on your calendar and plan ahead to build the Domestic Church.

Vivat Jesus!

Youth Chairman

It was a pleasure meeting with you and providing you information at the summer leadership meeting. There was a lot of good information and exchanges shared throughout the sessions. Contact me if you have additional ideas or thoughts on the various youth programs. As mentioned at the meeting, the Soccer Challenge program will be coming up very quickly. The state finals are scheduled for Saturday October 15th in Auburn. Councils will want to start thinking about planning and holding their competitions. This is a trying time when it comes to finding a field and getting participants. Work with your school CYO coordinator and local soccer youth programs to find out when practices are held. Holding a Council event on a Saturday morning is difficult at best getting youth to participate. CYO and youth programs have games Saturday morning so youth participation will be very low. Think outside the box and use the practice times. Coaches will gladly help organize the event. I will be creating District level winner certificates and have them posted for your downloading. As presented at the summer leadership meeting, Coats for Kids, is one of Supreme's 8 featured programs this fraternal year. It is time to start planning your program. Who will benefit? How may coats should you order? What fund raising activity will be held to support the program? Remember to include the parish in your activity, this helps with the "Build the Domestic Church program" that the Supreme Knight is asking us to undertake. The Coats for Kids order form is available through member management, which your Financial Secretary has access to or by using this link - Coats for Kids order form

Starting in September, I would like to feature a youth program in this column each month. If you have an upcoming or annual program that you do, provide a summary and a high level outline how you prepare. Include the steps that you take to organize, publish and execute the event. This will help other Councils get an idea what it takes to organize and do an activity. Fraternally, Ken DeVos

Certificate of Insurance

There seems to be some confusion on how to compete the request for Insurance certificate. You do not need to request a certificate for your Council. Whoever is requesting a certificate, because you are holding a function at their site, is the one who needs the certificate. On the next page is a sample of a completed certificate. The line that says – Certificate Holder is the facility/

group/church that is requesting the certificate. Make sure their address is included. Also make sure you complete the date(s) line of the event and describe the event.

General Agent Update

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income

While jobs may be safer in 2016, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related?

The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner’s income.

Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness?

I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow.

That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage.

Please contact your local General Agent's office and they will put you in contact with your agent today.

Council Chairman

Greetings Brother Knights! The month of August your District Deputies should be contacting you to set up a "Installation of Officers" for your Council or this can be a District wide event, too. This is a time when you would want to have an open meeting, invite your family & friends (parish family, too). One idea is to have a Pot Luck Dinner, then after the dinner gather all your newly elected officers, line them up (your DD will know the proper line up & procedures to follow). After all the new officers are sworn in, then their wives can put their Jewel of Office around their necks. It's a beautiful ceremony and should be meaningful to your new officers. Also this month is Venerable Michael McGivney's Birthday! Don't forget to also remember your brother Knights Birthday! Send them a Birthday Card. Have your other brothers sign the card, then present it to him or send it off in the mail! August is KofC Family Celebration Week! Do something with your fellow knights! Great time to get together with them to go see a baseball game! Have a Blessed month! Ed Miller Council Chairman

Culture of Life

It was nice meeting so many of you at the Summer Meeting. It's a real pleasure working with so many who share the Culture of Life. I ask that you try to find women health centers that are in need of an ultrasound machine. We can save many babies if we can get moms to look at an ultrasound picture of their baby. The organization 4US, whose sole purpose is to fund Ultrasound Machines for women's healthcare centers, is holding a huge fundraiser in August at Steilacoom Park in Lakewood WA.. It begins on Friday, Aug. 12 with a family friendly 5K Fun Run and continues on Saturday, Aug. 13. Saturday will feature what is advertised as "The World's Largest Squirt Gun Fight." This is a 100% Fun weekend and 100% of the monies raised go toward funding Ultrasound Machines. The cost of the run is $5.00 for Kids 6 to 13 and free for Kids 5 and under. The Squirt Gun Fight is free to those who purchase the Fun Run or other 4US events. This fundraiser deserves our support. Check it out at 4US.Org and come out and join the fun. If you can't come, go to their website and make a generous donation.

Family Chairman

Family of the Month Brothers, There is no better way to show appreciation to those that work so hard to make your Council successful than to select a family of the Month. As Knights of Columbus, we have always been interested in the development of strong, vibrant families. In support of this philosophy and to create an even greater awareness of our many fine Knights of Columbus families, the Supreme Council instituted the “Family of the Month” program. By participating in the Family of the Month program, your Council honors families who exemplify the values taught by our Church and Order. Base your Council’s recognition of a family on the following questions:

Does the family pray and attend Mass together?

Has the family made significant contributions to the Church, community and/or Council?

Does the family enjoy one another’s company?

Does the family communicate openly and honestly?

Does the family spend time together?

To participate in the Family of the Month program, choose a family to honor at the beginning of each month. Present a Family of the Month Certificate to the chosen member (Form #1843) at a general Council meeting. In addition, complete and submit the Family of the Month form (#1993A), found on kofc.org/forms, by the 15th of each month in order for your chosen family to be entered into a drawing to win a gift from the Supreme Knight. If I can be of any further assistance to your Council with this program feel free to Contact me!! Vivat Jesus! Tommy LaCour State Family Chairman [email protected] 206-380-0749

Tootsie Roll Update

columbuscharities.net Worthy Tootsie Rollers, As we look up at the calendar we see yet another month has passed us by. Are we still trying to decide about the Tootsie Roll Program? Well, time is passing you by! "BE MEN OF ACTION"..... Select that Tootsie Roll Chairman.....Secure your stores......Get to planning for your Tootsie Roll drive!! Get involved with this worthy program. Few programs show what the Knights are all about like the Tootsie Roll program. If you haven’t already, fill out the Council Chairman form, get your locations, and worry about the logistics later. Fred Meyer is our best partner, but QFC and Walmart are great, too, all you need to do is ask. Just do it!! Remember 80% of the net proceeds can be granted to organizations that deal with the disabled in your area. That is the beauty of the program, keeping funds local for visibility. Just go to the columbuscharities.net website. Everything is there under the Tootsie Roll image. For those Councils new at this, give it a try. You will not be disappointed even if the success is limited. For those that want small quantities of Tootsie Rolls I have some available. Just give me a call or send me an E-mail. When you see what your work does, you will be overwhelmed. The money collected over the last four years has helped countless individuals with disabilities, to help them have a better life. The next time you see a Special Olympian, care for the elderly or aid to anyone with disabilities, you can take comfort that you helped that person through the Tootsie Roll program. So "Be Men of Action".... Get Your Chairman forms in, stores secured and let’s go Tootsie Rolling!

If I can answer any questions or be of any further assistance please don't hesitate to contact me.
