As the Church and the School have gone through beautiful upgrades and improvements, the Knights are doing the same. As you know, we provide the "Knights of Columbus Catholic Faith Library" located in the South East end of the gathering area. We are now under construction and are close to completing new bookshelves in place of what was the ushers closet. In the meantime, be sure to help yourself to the many Books, CD's, magazines that are currently available for your taking. Whether you return it in a week, a month, or decide to keep the material, it's up to you. As long as it enriches your faith life, it is serving it's purpose. Stay tuned as the new bookshelves and area are completed.

A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Dear Friends, Each year the Archdiocese of Chicago requires parishes to count the people attending weekend Masses on the first four weeks of October. This is valuable information for parishes to have as it charts trends in Mass attendance and lets parishes know whether they have more or less people attending Mass in a given year. Our October count this year at St. Theresa reveals the following:

• Our average Mass count per weekend this year was 1,784 people. This is down from 2017’s average of 1,809, which was quite a bit down from 2016’s average. We had been hovering close to 2,000 for many years before the decline of the last two years. While attendance is down on average 25 from last year, most parishes have reported declines as well. I am relieved that the clergy abuse scandal has not led to a more precipitous decline in Mass attendance at St. Theresa. We will need to continue our efforts in evangelization by bringing more people to our faith and inviting more people to participate in Mass. That is a job all of us must be engaged in.

• Our average count for each of our weekend Masses: 5:00pm – 365, 7:00am – 182, 8:30am – 317, 10:00am – 556 and 11:30am – 350. We also celebrated a youth ministry Mass on October 14th that had 52 people in attendance.

• Our least attended Mass was 169 people at the 7:00am Mass on October 28th and the most attended Mass was 580 people at the 10:00am Mass on October 7th.

• Our church seats 900 people comfortably, so even with our largest crowd at 580 people, there is still plenty of room to accommodate many more Mass participants.

Included in this weekend’s bulletin, you will find the Annual Financial Report which highlights how we did as a parish in the last fiscal year, which runs from July 1 – June 30. The report indicates a surplus in both the school and parish revenue over expenses for the last fiscal year. That is wonderful news and a testament to your generosity as a parish… so THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! The explanation for that resides in an increased enrollment in our school which was not budgeted for, a very large anonymous donation to our school to help advance our curricular changes for the future and better than budgeted donations to the parish via our weekly offering – all very good news! One reaction to this good news would be to say our donations are not needed because we are doing so well. I would ask you to resist that temptation. Your generosity is needed now as much as ever. Let me explain. We have been graced with the conclusion of our building project which brought roughly $11,000,000 in improvements to our School, Dolan Center and Pauline Center. Thank you as well for your donations to that. However, there are more improvements that will need to be addressed in the near future. The church renovation, completed in 1999 is now nearly 20 years old, which means the roof and HVAC units which serve the church will need to be replaced in the near future. In addition, the church would benefit from a new lighting scheme which includes LED lighting to bring the church up to date on that. There is a great deal of concrete repair that needs to be done throughout the campus and many HVAC units on the school building will need to be replaced in the next few years. We would also benefit from a new ceiling in the gym, a new kitchen in the Lower Dolan and a new entrance to the church off of Benton Street. My goal is to address as many of these concerns as possible without initiating a capital campaign, so your continued generosity is essential if that will be a possibility. Many thanks to Hank Aleliunas, our Business Manager, Joyce Pizek our Bookkeeper, the rest of our Parish Pastoral Staff, our Parish Finance Council and the BSJ (School Board) Finance Subcommittee for all of their hard work and effort in being good stewards of the parish finances. I could not lead this parish well in regards to fiscal responsibility without their valuable advice and assistance. Enjoy the week and may God bless you all.

Veterans Exi ng Homelessness

We've all heard the stories. We've all seen the pictures of the homeless veterans struggling to regain their foo ng when returning to civilian life. They risked their lives for us. They could use a hand.....we can be "church" to them.

The good news is that the Veteran's Administra on (VA) has a wonderful rent subsidy program that moves the homeless veterans to apartments - with a success rate of over 60% by the 2 1/2 year mark!

But there's one missing component, and that is paying for the ini al and ongoing household goods that make an apartment a home, and makes that home the basis to change a life.

In conjunc on with a na onal veteran's organiza on (Military Outreach USA), the parishioners of St. Theresa can make a difference! On the weekend of November 10-11, we will be collec ng the household items shown below. The VA will distribute 100% of the items collected to service veterans in the greater Chicagoland area by the following week's end. Please help us fill the collec on bins.

Help Our Veterans by dona ng items that they need to set up their new home.

Veterans Exi ng Homelessness: Move-In-Essen als When a veteran leaves a shelter or transi onal housing and moves to a permanent residence, they o en do not have the basic items need to set up their new home. Aside from a need for bedding and furniture, they need the basic items we o en take for granted. This collec on drive will serve to assist veterans that are moving into a new home. All of these items will be delivered to a VA facility to be distributed to a veteran in need.

Personal Hygiene Bath Soap Shaving Cream Deodorant Combs Hair Brush Nail Clipper Toothpaste Toothbrush Sunscreen Chapstick

Kitchen and Cleaning Kitchen Trash Can Windex Pine Sol Dishwashing Liquid Dishcloth Sponge Mop Bucket Broom Dustpan Paper Towels

Bathroom Toilet Paper Wash Cloth Plunger Toilet Bowl Cleaner Toilet Brush Bath Towels Shower Curtain

Miscellaneous Smoke Detector Battery Flashlight w/Batteries Wall Calendar Appointment Book Garbage Bags Laundry Basket Hamper Laundry Detergent Aluminum Foil Pampers (Diapers) Light Bulbs

These Move-In-Essen als provide a Veteran exi ng homelessness with the basics needed as they transi on to

their new, permanent residence.

These items are needed on a con nuing basis.

Pray to End Abortion

On Saturday, November 10, all parishioners are invited to join members of the St. Theresa Parish Respect Life Committee when we pray the Rosary outside an abortion mill in Des Plaines. We will meet about 8:35 am, or when the 8:00 am Mass ends, gathering just outside the Day Chapel at St. Theresa Church and returning by 10:15 am. Transportation will be available for those who are able to join us. Please make an effort to join us in this important cause. Thank You.

Students from 3rd and 4th grade team up with preschoolers in the school Chapel for an introduction to the Rosary. Faith infuses the classrooms at St. Theresa School beginning in Preschool. We are very proud of our 3rd and 4th graders for setting good examples for our youngest students.
