From January 2014 onwards, householders in Kilkenny City and its environs will be required by law to separate out food waste from their general landfill bin. The purpose of this new law is to treat food waste as a resource and stop landfill disposal of food waste. Households that have a waste collection service will need to receive a third bin, specifically for food waste. Unlike most garden composting units, the third bin will be able to take all food waste, both cooked and un-cooked. The operation of the third bin will depend on your service provider

and you should contact them di-rectly to check what type

of service they will offer in order for

you to meet your legal re-

quirement. The regula-

tion only covers households in urban areas so dwellings in rural areas will not be impacted. Under the new law, households within the defined Kilkenny City urban area are legally obliged to segregate food waste from their landfill waste and waste collec-

tors operating in the defined area are obliged to offer a third bin to enable householders to meet their legal requirement. To check if your house is within the defined area check online on www.kilkennycoco.ie or call into the Environment Section in County

In 2014 residents of Kilkenny City & Environs will be required to separate out food waste from their landfill bin. This will be achieved by use of a third bin.

A blast from the past....

LOCAL athletes enjoyed sev-eral individual and team suc-cesses at the Kilkenny County ‘B’ Cross Country Champion-ships in Thomastown.

There were team and individ-ual gold and silver successes, as well as individual bronze. Thirty athletes competed, in-dicating the ongoing commit-ment of the under-age runners.

Team gold winners were U13 girls and the U15 boys. U11 girls and U13 boys were silver medallists. However, before savouring the detail of these achievements, let us not forget the U9 competitors.

Emily Murphy, Kate O’Neill and Molly Hogan contested the girls race, while Michael Brennan, Joey Ryan, Mat-thew Bolger, Sean Dunne, and Leo Downey were the Cas-tlecomer representatives in the boys’ race. All displayed serious endeavour as they

rose to the challenge.The numerical strength of the

U11 girls helped the club medal prospects. Katie Clarke’s sec-ond place silver medal was consolidated by Sarah and Aoi-bhinn Brophy coming in at 9th and 11th, followed by Ella Bug-gy, Katie Purcell, Amelie Bolger, Sophie Kealy and Lucy Coogan.

This group, in collecting points, ensured that com-petitors from other clubs were pushed down the field and thus protected the achievement of their team.

U11, where Luca Downey also impressed. Aoife Cahalan is the 2013 ‘B’ U13 champion, and Ellen Buggy’s input was re-warded with bronze.

Eimear Stone’s fifth place fin-ish ensured team gold. Chris Korff completed Castlecomer’s

dominance at this level as U13 boy champion.

Killian Hogan 9th, Jack Buggy 11th and Nicky Connolly 12th brought team silver to Castle-comer. At U15, Hannah Mur-phy (3rd) was sole Castlecom-er competitor and the bronze medallist.

Hannah has proved a plucky competitor all season.

The same could be said of the U15 boys. Ross Connolly’s sil-ver and James Buggy’s bronze were complemented by Adam Jacob’s fifth place finish to win team gold.

Only the All-Ireland Cross Country Championships at WIT on December 15 remain on the 2013 calendar.

Hannah Murphy and Aoife Cahalan (U15), Sean Buggy (U17) and Lauren Dermody (U19) as well as Jack Murphy and Cathal O’Reilly at U11 and Conor Clarke at U13 have all

qualified to travel to Water-ford.

Set in a similarly colorful and equally absurd universe of seedy, over-dramatized

miscreants, American Hustle relays the mostly-true details of the controversial ABSCAM case, admitting up front in a title card that only “some of this actually happened.” Playing fast and loose with the facts isn’t the issue dog-ging Hustle, however. The picture can’t switch into a higher gear as Russell maneuvers this sluggish crime comedy through grotesque, cartoonish but pointless transi-tions as his black comedy searches for a laugh.

Decked out in the appropriately hideous attire of 1978, the FBI – led by maverick, sociopathic agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) – stage an elaborate long con meant to ensnare numerous corrupt politicians, including an opportunistic New Jersey mayor (Jeremy Renner), a handful of greedy U.S. congressmen, and a crooked senator. To help him pull off this complicated scheme, DiMaso blackmails Irving Rosen-feld (Christian Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), low-level grifters who were getting “fat” off of easily duped Jersey entrepre-neurs.

Like most hastily hatched schemes, the plan is designed to be simple. What a boring movie that would make. DiMaso’s strate-gy eventually grows unwieldy, tar-geting those with broader political influence. In turn, the stakes also raise … putting Rosenfeld and Prosser in boiling-hot water while

also threatening the well being of numerous seemingly innocent bystanders (including Rosenfeld’s wife, played by Jennifer Lawrence).

The Goodfellas reference isn’t by accident. Russell employs his usual suspects, but digs deep into Scorsese’s trademark bag of tricks for Hustle, bending his distended story around filmmak-ing gimmicks we associate with the legendary director (but ones that, admittedly, do not belong to Scorsese, alone).

The biggest similarity has to be the picture’s over-reliance on narration, with Hustle characters talking – and talking, and talking – us through an unnecessarily con-voluted script. Con games require exposition. Russell, in the process, does continue to establish his own film vocabulary. Hustle has as much in common with the blue-collar bombast of The Fighter as it does with Scorsese’s gaudy, dangerous Casino. The camera violently pans and scans, zooming in on a character’s hands, or track-ing a briefcase filled with money as if it contains a bomb, ready to explode. As he has done in movies past, Russell laces a bed of recognizable period tunes behind his action. Yet even that’s a mixed bag. He makes good use of Elton John’s Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road, then nearly torpedoes Lawrence’s burgeoning career by asking her to sing Wings’ Live and Let Die in a cringingly embarrassing scene. Hustle actually lacks that one memorable marriage of scene and song, a sequence that drills its

way into the core of a moment the way Led Zeppelin’s What Is (And What Should Never Be) captured the heartbreaking confusion of Cooper’s vicious breakdown in last year’s Silver Linings Playbook. Then again, Hustle often seems to be chasing the deliberately messy structure that worked so well in Playbook but doesn’t gel here.

You end up noticing these glaring problems because Hustle ultimately doesn’t crackle with the energy needed to sell the con. The first hour passes by because it’s easy to stay busy criticiz-ing the period-glam of Russell’s garish cast. The “razzle dazzle,” as Lawrence’s suburban housewife describes it. The movie opens with an extended shot of a bloated Bale – looking like iconic producer Rob-ert Evans – doctoring the disas-trous hairpiece that rests atop his head like rescued road kill. From there, we’re practically dared by Russell to look away from Renner’s Frankie Vali coif, Adams’ persistent side boob, Cooper’s greasy perm and Lawrence’s nail polish (which smells like an intoxicating blend of flowers and garbage).

But it’s all window dressing. The clothes, the hair, the accents, the “science oven” … they’re all distractions that are supposed to keep us entertained because, without them, Russell’s holding an empty box of half-truths, silly cari-catures, and disappointing conclu-sions. The hustle ends up being on those who came to American Hustle seeking substance behind the flash.

AMERICAN HUSTLE


It’s a great credit to star Oscar Isaac that a character as bull-headed, ornery and misanthropic as Llewyn can come to life and be as entertaining and engaging as he is in the film. As bad an attitude as the protagonist may have, he earns respect from the audience, not necessarily for his convictions or even the fact that he’s right, but because he’s both entertaining to watch on a comedic, Buster Keaton level and incredibly talented as a musician. From the very opening of the movie, which features Llewyn sitting on a starkly-lit stage in a café singing a rendition of Dave Van Ronk’s “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me,” we become entranced by the soul in Isaac’s vocal and guitar performance and that impression only grows stronger over the course of multiple performances in the story. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Coen brothers film without a roster of terrific character actors as off-beat supporting players. Llewyn’s path through small vignettes that make up his week find him connecting with a full variety of friends, family members and strangers who almost exclusively bring out the worst in him, painting a handsomely hid-eous portrait of the lead while also weaving a smart, funny and enter-taining story. Reflecting the general misery of the lead character, the atmosphere of Inside Llewyn Davis is painted in muted tones and deep contrasts and has its own unique dark beauty. After years of working with the genius Roger Deakins, the Coens put the photography in the hands of cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, but rather than suffering in the shadow of his predecessor he has lit and filmed one of the directors’ most gorgeous films to date. Soft lighting brings the chill of a New York winter right into the theater, while darkness surrounding Llewyn as he plays a set develops an isolation for the character while cre-ating an intimacy for the audience. Due to the fact that the Coen broth-ers are two of my favorite filmmak-ers, I hold their movies to a different standard when I enter a theater and I am constantly amazed at how they continue to produce at such an as-tonishing, brilliant level. Each time out they present something bold, innovative and different. While the musical influence may remind audi-ences of the great O Brother Where Art Thou and the pitch black humor is in the same vein as A Serious Man, Inside Llewyn Davis is unlike anything the directors have made and is a phenomenal piece of art.

Give your cat a stimulating home environment. This is particularly important if it is an ‘indoor’ cat. Think three dimensionally by providing comfy sleeping places high up as well as offering a variety of different level shelves for the cat to climb on.

Cardboard boxes with a hole cut in the side, as well as paper bags, make great cheap toys for your cat, and can be easily replaced.

Cats can be trained too! Clicker training is a kind and fun method of training your cat all sorts of tricks (see book section of the APBC web site).

In multi-cat households make sure that there is enough space for each of the cats to have some privacy. All cats like to have their own space.

Do not assume that cats in the same house are happy to share their food bowls. Provide a choice of feeding locations - some cats prefer to eat on the ground, others in a

high location.

Do not tell your cat off if it is having toileting problems as this may make the problem worse. Take it to the vet for a check up.

Never force a cat to interact - they like to feel in control.

Hide dried food around the house for your cat to find dur-ing the day or provide it with a special activity ball so that it has to ‘hunt’ for its food. Cats need to hunt so make sure that suitable games are avail-able to cater for this instinct.

Use fishing rod type cat toys to play with your cat or kitten and not your fingers as you may get scratched! Remember that adult cats need to play too – so play regular games with suitable toys.

A coir door mat securely fixed to an upright wall makes an ideal scratching post and helps to keep your cat’s claws healthy. Spray or rub some ‘cat nip’ on it to make it even more attractive to your cat.

The Goldfinch is the newest book by American Author Donna Tart and her first in 11 years fol-lowing 2002’s The Little Friend.

The book begins with our main character, 13 year old Theo Decker,

who after miracu-lously surviving an accident that kills his mother, is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend.

He spends the next few years of his life in misery and is drawn into the world of art by

his only reminder of his mother, a Dutch painting called The Goldfinch.

It’s a long book and very old fashioned but it is endlessly engaging and cap-tivating, the kind of book one stays up all night to read.

FrozenFrozen is the newest film by Disney that is in cinemas now and is one of the big-gest surprises of the year; most going into this film won’t be expecting Toy Story but what you get in the end comes pretty close.

The film is in many ways a throwback to Disney’s 1990’s output like Beauty

and the Beast and The Little Mermaid but updated and modernized.

The story follows the two princesses of a seemingly Scandinavian royal family; older sister Elsa and the younger Anna. Elsa was born with magical powers, and after accidently injuring her sister at a young age (which cost her sister her knowledge of Elsa’s powers) she opts to distance herself

from her family out of fear of hurting them.

Everything goes wrong at a ball years later and Elsa is forced to flee and releases her powers, causing the en-

tire kingdom to be shrouded in ice. The film is truly a huge step above what non-pixar Disney has been put-ting out these last few years and is worth a watch.

Dublin born Jerry Fish has been a huge part of the Irish music scene ever since his debut album with the Mudbug Club went multi-plati-num in Ireland back in 2002.

He will be playing his new show in the Set Theatre next Saturday. Debuted at this year’s Electric Picnic, The Jerry

Fish Electric Sideshow was born from a love of circus and street theatre and was one of the festi-val’s highlights.

He has a highly eclec-tic style and his sound has been defined as a mix of ‘lounge lizard schmooze and mariachi passion’. The gig will start at 8PM, tickets are €20.

There isn’t really much coming out this time of year in terms of albums, most of the big magazines and websites for music have already made up their year end lists and musicians are waiting until next year to bring out any new music.

Given this, here’s an album that came out in February, Live.Long.ASAP. Live.Long is Rocky’s follow up to his excellent 2011

mixtape Live.Love.ASAP and continues the trend of having lush, deep beats with a variety of different producers.

The celebrity life has obviously influenced the album, as we get a boat load of guest features (Especially on album highlight 1 Train) and songs about fashion. Live.Long doesn’t quite live up to the mixtape but it’s a close race and a great album.

When the first Walking Dead game came out last year, I was certainly skeptical but thankfully I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Walking Dead was an adventure game developed by adventure game gods TellTale and through its five episodes (released between April and

November) we are told the story of Lee, a middle aged criminal and Clementine, an eight-year-old girl who he finds shortly after the start of the apocalypse and helps protect from the walkers (the story is completely separate from that of the TV show or graphic novels).

What made the game

special was its focus on choice, the decisions you made greatly affected how the story turns out, often in ways far subtler than do I

sacrifice him or her. Season 2 continues the story of these characters and will be released on December 17th.

Two of the most popular Liverpool players of the last 25

years will be in Kilkenny next month for a one off night of

Q&A, fun and banter. Merseyside Legends, Robbie Fowler

and Jason McAteer will hit THE HUB KILKENNY on SATURDAY

JANUARY 11TH 2013 for a very special night that is sure to

be a sell-out.

Robbie Fowler, or “God” as he is affectionately known

amongst the Liverpool fraternity, is one of the most beloved

players to ever wear the famous red of Liverpool Football

Club. He made his debut for them on September 22nd 1993

where he scored his first of 183 goals for the Anfield side.

He has played for an array of clubs since leaving Merseyside

in 2001 but his heart and soul always belonged to the KOP.

These days he can be seen doing TV work for Sky Sports &

ITV as well as the comedy quiz show “A League of their own”.

Jason McAteer is another Anfield legend with the added

aura of being a 52 capped Irish player and the man whose

crucial goal sent us to the 2002 World Cup finals. McA-

teer started his career with Bolton Wanderers where he

made 114 appearances and scored 8 times. He signed for

Liverpool in 1995 and quickly settled in with players like

David James, Jamie Redknapp, Robbie Fowler and Steve

McManaman. As well as being top class footballers, these

guys also became known in the media as “spice boys”, usu-

ally for their off the field antics. McAteer went on to make

100 appearances for Liverpool (3 goals) before moving on to

Blackburn Rovers in 1999. Since ending his football career

in 2007 McAteer has made countless TV appearances and

can still regularly be seen and heard on Irish TV and media

as well as on Sky Sports and ITV.

Because of the huge amount of Liverpool fans in the South

East area, organisers expect tickets to sell out fast, so if this

Golf NotesCallanAGM

The Mens section annual general meeting takes place in the clubhouse on Friday 13th of December with nomination forms for officers available from the office. Please come along and contribute to the running of the mens section.

Winter LeagueThe winter league 2013/14

is underway and is wonderful oppurtunity to play competitive golf every time you take to the course.

The winter league is an open event (15e for visitors on their first entry into the league with 12e for second and subsequent entries; members 6e and 4e for subsequent entries) and provides brilliant value for visitors and members alike. Golfers can enter the competition 7 days a week which means that any day the weather is favourable you can play in a competition.

The top 5 cards of each individual will be combined with the top fifty golfers making the final. As always there will be a fantastic array of prizes on offer in the playoff so make the best of the winter and enjoy competitive golf every time you tee it up.

Open CompetitionThis year Callan Golf Club will

host an open 18 hole two person competition, any combination of males/females, throughout the Christmas period.

The open competition starts on St Stephens Day and runs up to and including December 29th. The competition has a wonderful array of prizes up for grabs with prizes for each category of players. Please come along and support your club over the holiday period and work off some of the excesses of the holidays with a round of golf.

The cost to visitors is 10e per golfer with members costing 8e per golfer. Its a wonderful oppurtunity to invite visitors who might be around for Christmas to enjoy our course too. Vouchers are available from office which would make fabulous Christmas presents for members.

On behalf of the Captains, Presidents and all officers of the club we would like to wish all members and friends of the club a very happy and safe Christmas and a wonderful 2014. Thanks to all for your fantastic support throughout 2013 and we look forward to seeing everyone over the holidays.

Ladies AGMThere was a great attendance

at the Ladies AGM which was held in the club house on Monday night Dec. 2nd .

The meeting was first addressed by outgoing President Linda Adair. Linda thanked the committee and all those people who worked so hard during the year to make the year such a great success .Linda also congratulated the Junior Cup team and the Finn Trophy team on their great achievements during the year and thanked the players , caddies and managers for their

commitment. She then nominated Rita O Neill as incoming President.

Outgoing Lady Captain ,Rose Brophy, in her address thanked captain Paul Cashin and President John Kinchella for all their support during the year.Rose also thanked Sheila Kirby and Catherine Dore for their time given to organising the mixed competition every Friday evening during the Summer which is thoroughly enjoyed by all who take part.

Incoming Lady Captain, Kathleen Phelan, thanked Rose for nominating her last year and is looking forward to another very successful year ahead. Kathleen then nominated Mary Manning as her vice captain.

The Ladies Senior alliance had their outing in the club on Monday

with 70 Ladies taking part on what turned out to be a pet day for this time of the year.

The Ladies will have competi-tion slots on Saturdays as well as Sundays going forward. The Saturday slots are bookable online and open to all categories of membership including Juniors and Juveniles who hold a Full Adult Handicap.

Thomas Nevin (10) continued his good form of late and secured victory in last weekends’ members Winter League. Thomas scored 26 points over the 11 holes winning on a countback from Olan Corcoran (8). Martin Donohoe took 3rd place on a countback also on 25 points. Thomas Nevin has now won the winter league with a final tally of 97 ahead of Mick Dillon in 2nd place on 92 points. Presentation of prizes will take place after the Christmas Gala Day on Saturday next.

December Madness – Sunday 15th December 2013

Our final Open Singles competition of the year for turkey’s and hams will take place on Sunday 15th December. Timesheet is now in place (online or 056 7726699) and early booking is advised following the success of our November Madness competition

Christmas GalaMembers are reminded that

the Christmas Gala Day and golf outing will take place on Saturday next 14th December – the competition will be a team event with a draw for partners to take place at 12.00 noon.

Prizegiving and social evening will take place after the golf along with presentation to respective club fourball and matchplay winners. All members are encouraged to attend and transport home will be provided after the party.

Autumn Series 2013 Final

The final of the Autumn Series is due to be held next Friday 13th December. Qualifiers from the last number of weeks have been contacted and are asked to register on the day at 10.00 a.m. sharp with a draw for partners at 10.15 a.m. and a shotgun start at 10.30 a.m

Christmas Championship (Singles)

This years’ Christmas Championship will be a singles event, open to men and ladies and will run from Friday 27th to Tuesday 31st December inclusive. 3 qualifiers and equals on each day will to forward to the final to be held on Saturday 4th January 2014.
