Kilian News Introducing Dr. Aaron Woodard

Kilian Community College adjunct instructor Aaron Woodard successfully defended his

doctoral dissertation Friday (February 12, 2010) using the college’s remote learning class-

room rather than traveling to Great Britain to meet with his examiners.

The defense of Woodard’s dissertation, which also appears as the book, “Hard men, Soft

Fur”, is a final step in the certification for his terminal degree.

During the two-hour video confer-

ence the examiners reviewed the

text and made specific suggestions

for revisions of the document.

Woodard has taught history and po-

litical science courses at Kilian

since 2002.

The South Dakota native and Uni-

versity of South Dakota graduate

defended a dissertation discussing

early European contact with native

peoples through fur trading. Docu-

mented contact goes back as far as

the early 1730s for this region.

Woodard linked with the examiners

at the University of Wales at Lampeter via a two-way classroom link that Kilian uses for

courses in partnership with Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.

The text was initially written in American English. Working with an advisor in Wales,

Woodard had to convert the dissertation to British English standards which included adapt-

ing spelling, punctuation and some nouns that differ in usage between the two sides of the

Atlantic.

If your name is different than the name on your identity document, you will need to bring additional proof of your legal name. Acceptable documents for proof of legal name change are a certified marriage certificate (issued by a state vital records agency), a certified adoption document, or a certified court order authorizing a name change (such as a divorce decree). One document to prove Social Security number. The documents below serve as proof of Social Security number:

Social Security Card W-2 Form SSA 1099 Form Non-SSA 1099 Form Pay stub (must include name and social security number)

Two documents to prove your principal address. A parent‘s proof of address is acceptable for a minor child. Please bring two of the documents listed below (each must contain your current address and have been issued within the last 90 days):

Utility bill Credit card statement Pay stub or earnings statement Rent receipt Phone bill Transcript or report card from accredited school

The following must have been issued within the last year: Bank statement Mortgage document Tax document Homeowners/renter‘s insurance policy

These new rules will help to establish a more secure driver license and will help address our shared concern about national security, identity theft, and highway safety.

We are getting a lot of garbage in the blue recy-cle containers, liquids, paper, gum and other unfit items. Please remind the new students

only plastic and cans that are empty can be put in the containers. Any containers that are not empty of liquid should be put in the common

trash cans. Your help is appreciated.
