overlooking the port of Ancona, which thus came to be called “Posatora,” from the Latin “posat et ora” (to set down, or land, and pray).

*In 1295, after nine months in Posatora, the Holy House moved to a forest that be-longed to a woman called Loreta, near the town of Recanati. That is where the name Loreto comes from.

*Between 1295 and 1296, after spending eight months in this location the Holy House was miraculously transported to a farm on Mount Prodo belonging to two brothers of the Antici family.

*In 1296, after four months at this farm, the Holy House departed and landed on a pub-lic road on Mount Prodo connecting Reca-nati to Ancona, where it remains to this day.

Excavations in both Nazareth and Loreto found similar materials at both sites. The stones that make up the lower part of the walls of the Holy House in Loreto appear to have been finished with a technique par-ticular to the Nabataeans, which was also widespread in Palestine. There are inscrip-tions in syncopated Greek characters with contiguous Hebrew letters that read “O Je-sus Christ, Son of God,” written in the same style inscribed in the Grotto in Nazareth.

The move is attributed to an angelic action officially recognized by Popes and sus-tained by saints. However, such authorita-tive approvals are not intended to explain the material procedure, which carried an object the size of a house from one conti-nent to another practically overnight.

This transfer, however, was confirmed by historical, documentary and archaeological evidence. Once again, for the astonishment of many, science confirms the Church.

Prof. Giorgio Nicolini, who devoted his life of study and research to the case, spoke at this conference. Based on these scientific evidences, he proved indisputably the ve-racity of the miraculous transfer.

THE HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO Part II

2. The house was miraculously transferred

*On May 9, 1291, the Holy House was still in Nazareth.

*On the night of May 9 to 10, 1291, it was removed from its foundation and traveled nearly 2,000 miles and reached Tersatto (now Trsat), in the region of Dalmatia, in what is now a suburb of Rijeka, Croatia. The priest at the local church, Alexander Geogevich, was surprised at the appear-ance of a small church-like structure. In a dream, Mary appeared to him and told him the origins of the house. To confirm her story, the Blessed Mother interceded for him to Our Lord and Alexander was cured of an illness he had suffered from for years. On that occasion, Nicolò Frangipane, feu-dal lord of Tersatto personally sent a delegation to Nazareth to ascertain whether the Holy House had indeed dis-appeared from its original place. The em-issaries not only verified its disappearance but found the foundation on which the house was built and from which the walls had been taken away as a block. Around these foundations in Nazareth, the Basil-ica of the Annunciation was built. In Lo-reto, the Holy House stands firmly, with-out its foundation, directly on the ground.

*On the night of December 9 to 10, 1294, the Holy House disappeared from Ter-satto and landed “in various places” of Italy. For nine months it stayed on a hillside

THE LOVE OF THE LORD

In the Gospel Reading, Jesus seems to recommend an inhuman attitude: you are not to love your mother or father or your child more than Jesus. In fact, you are not to love your own life more than Jesus. If you do, you will lose what you love.

What does it even mean to compare loves in this way? If you have more than one child, you can love each one equally, can’t you? Why think that your love of your

Reading I: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a Psalm: 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19 Reading II: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42

child is in competition with your love of Je-sus? But if it is, honestly, why wouldn’t you love your child more?

Well, think about it this way. To love some-one is to want to be united with that per-son somehow. If your mother sends you lots of gifts but never cares to be near you, you wouldn’t think she loved you, would you? More than that, if, when your mother came to visit you, she constantly opposed everything you yourself value, you would have a sense of your distance from her; and that distance would make you feel lonely with respect to her even while she was there visiting you.

And now you can see how loves can be in opposition to each other. If your adult son is selling drugs to teenagers, you can be at one with your son only if you no longer care about those teenagers. But then you will be at a distance from the Lord because the Lord cares about each one of his peo-ple. So in wanting to be united with your drug-dealing son, you would be willing to be separated from the Lord. And then you would not be worthy of the Lord, would you?

The good news is that if you do love the Lord, then you will be united with him; and in being united with him, you will also be united with everyone else united with the Lord. The love you have for your child, the love you have for your mother or father, have their full home in your shared love of the Lord. And that is why the Lord says that a person who loses his life for the Lord will find it. Real union, and the real love, peace, and joy that union brings, are possible only in the love of the Lord.
