I view this position as more than just “waiting in the wings” while the new sheriff in town, Joe Pinto, competently leads our organization with his own style. I look forward to working with Joe and our Board to move forward NYSCHP’s priorities as he sees them. Having served as Vice President of Public Policy for two terms, I have a firsthand appreciation for the frustration of legislative process in New York State. Nevertheless, under our President’s leadership the Council will continue to play an integral role in driving the changes necessary to improve our profession and promote the patient-centered ideals underlying our diverse practices as health-system pharmacists. While the role of Pharmacy Technician is not yet legitimized under New York State law, be assured we already have a game plan in place to commence well before the next legislative session convenes in Albany next January. Your current Board of Directors is composed of practitioners from across New York State with each member bringing their own professional and personal experiences to table in leading this organization. As a former Director of Pharmacy at community hospital and now as a pharmacy faculty member, my perspective is patient-centered, student-focused and technician-involved. What we do is always about the patient. The students are our future. Pharmacy Technicians must be part of our organization. One of my first functions as President-Elect was to install the incoming officers for the Western New York Chapter (WNYSHP) in June. As emcee of the installation dinner, I assisted in the presentation of the chapter awards. Unfortunately, two of those well-deserved accolades were presented posthumously to the surviving family members of the pharmacists being honored. As such, I encourage you (as I did the audience) to nominate your colleagues for awards while they are alive. Every one of us has worked alongside outstanding pharmacy practitioners who should be acknowledged for their accomplishments in improving our workplaces, profession, and/or the delivery of care for our patients. As Chair of the NYSCHP Awards Committee, I look forward to having to review a stack of nominations. Lastly, you should be aware that the Council’s leadership has seriously analyzed the risks and benefits of maintaining its traditional office structure. Our board tackled the difficult issues and affirmatively made the decision to move forward with our new management structure. Our affiliation with Capitol Hill Management Services will allow our organization to focus on the needs of our members and to realize the benefits of the economies of scale which were impossible for a small office operation. Our Board has full faith and confidence in our Executive Director, Shaun, Flynn, who will be unencumbered to help lead us to a new level. As I would remind my students when I taught Pharmacy Management, take some time to get away from work and re-charge your “inner” batteries this summer! Christopher Jadoch President-Elect, NYSCHP President’s Message
