Dear Family at Peace,

May has been a month of rehabilitation for me. Once again, I underwent

surgery to replace a hip that had been painfully arthritic. It amazes me at what

surgeons can do! I don’t want to see a video of the procedure, I hear it’s pretty

brutal, but when I think about how God-given parts can be replaced by something made by humans,

well, it’s simply amazing. Even more incredible is how the God-given parts are able to attach themselves to

these new foreign bodies. And, it all works! We are indeed “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps. 139).

As I recover, I find myself thinking of things and people I am thankful for: Pastor Jeff and other leaders in

the church have readily taken on my responsibilities, giving me time for my recovery. Members of the

Congregational Life Committee that took care of activities during the busy month of May. Those who have

shown their support through their prayers, visits, phone calls and meals. It is humbling to be served so

selflessly.

My wife, Dianne, has taken on all of the responsibilities of our home that comes with springtime in Montana

(as she did in taking on winter duties). She gives me shots every day and makes sure I do my physical

therapy!

Although I am absent in body, you all have been very much on my mind. Even though I was not able to be in

attendance the Sundays in May that we celebrated and blessed the work of the quilters, High School

Graduates, Mothers and Sunday School Teachers, I lift up my prayers of thanksgiving for the way their

efforts have blessed others and brought joy to many. I am so proud of these groups and their hard work.

They should be celebrated!

Maybe it is just my perspective, but this recovery seems like it is taking longer than the last one did. For

some reason, I was expecting it would be just the opposite! So, I am learning to be patient… and creative

with activities from my recliner.

I look forward to be back in the midst of the congregation soon - hopefully by May 28th

. I look forward to the

summer months that provide more relaxed rhythm to ministry of the church. I hope to use this time for us to

celebrate what God has done in our midst and to expectantly look for ways he will continue to work among

us as we witness to the love of God that is graciously and abundantly ours.

I am so grateful for the ways you have shared this love.

Pastor Bob

No doubt about it, spring is moving into summer- finally! The trees and bushes have sprouted their leaves.

Area pastures and lawns are a beautiful sea of green. The sun is high above our heads; consequently the

weather has warmed. On our June calendars a shift in season occurs; summer begins on June 21. This year,

June is also the month when a shift occurs in the Christian liturgical calendar.

Pentecost Sunday is June 4.

After Holy Trinity Sunday on June 11, and through Reformation Sunday on

October 26, the Sundays are all given the designation “after Pentecost.” The

liturgical color for the season after Pentecost is green, emphasizing a sustained

time of growth in our Christian faith and life. But without the events of the first Pentecost there

would be little spiritual growth possible. Martin Luther said that the primary work of the Holy Spirit is to

make faith in Jesus Christ possible. The sanctification of our lives then follows from that.

As a major Festival Sunday, Pentecost Sunday is relatively overlooked- at least in comparison to the festivals

of Christmas and Easter. Pentecost ("the fiftieth [day]") is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks, a

prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai. This feast is

still celebrated in Judaism as Shavuot (meaning 7 weeks). Later, in the Christian liturgical year, it became a

feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ

(120 in all), as described in Acts 2:1–31. For this reason, Pentecost is called by some Christians today the

"Birthday of the Church".

According to Christian tradition, Pentecost is always seven weeks after Easter Sunday; that is to say, 50 days

after Easter (inclusive of Easter Day). In other words, it falls on the eighth Sunday, counting Easter Day. In

the Western Church, the earliest possible date is May 10 and the latest possible date June 13.

The liturgical color of Pentecost is red symbolizing joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. Clergy wear red

vestments and in modern times the custom has extended to the lay people of the congregation wearing red

clothing in celebration as well. Red banners, even balloons, are often hung from walls or ceilings to

symbolize the blowing of the "mighty wind” and the free movement of the Spirit. Symbols of the Holy Spirit

such as the dove or flames are prominently displayed. Red paraments hung at the altar and pulpit and red

flowering plants such as geraniums placed around the chancel are customary decorations for Pentecost

services. These symbolize the renewal of life, the coming of the warmth of summer, and the growth of the

church at and from the first Pentecost.

Pentecost Sunday reminds us first of all that it is the Holy Spirit that builds and sustains Christ’s church. Peter

preached to the crowds on the first Pentecost, “This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.

Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promised Holy

Spirit, he has poured out this that you both see and hear.” (Acts 2:32-33) Secondly, that we are united by the

work of the Holy Spirit with Christ’s whole church on earth- “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you

were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all who

is above all and through all in all.” (Eph. 4: 4-6) Thirdly, that Pentecost is also a local event. The outpouring

of the Holy Spirit can occur wherever believers are gathered for worship. We may not have tongues of fire on

our heads but through the Holy Spirit our hearts “burn within us” whenever we hear God’s Word “being

opened to us”! (Luke 24:32) I look forward to our Pentecost Sunday celebration and I also look forward to

growing in Christian faith, hope and love with you in the summer weeks that follow.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Jeff

To Jerry & Karl Swenson for cleaning up the fence

posts and filling the holes out by the Community

Gardens.

To all our Sunday School Teachers and Musicians who

made this education year so special. We couldn’t do it

without you!

Thanks to Jinx Sorensen for taking care of our

recycling items.

To Bruce Sorensen for dirt for the Community

Gardens.

To Paul Flanagan to pulling the grass that had grown

up around our sign.

To Larry Oddy and Dan Madison for mowing our

lawns!

To the Men’s Breakfast group for their financial

support for the Pentecost geraniums.

To everyone who has helped beautify our Peace

Gardens!

The LWR truck has come and gone once again. It never ceases to amaze us how God works with the people of Southwestern Montana. The semi started its journey in Missoula collecting donations from the Missoula area churches. Several congregations dropped off their contributions with the final loading point being our parking lot.

With the expert repacking of our volunteers that semi could not hold one more box. May these quilts, etc. spread the love of God to areas near and far. We are blessed with the time, talent and resources to make this project a success. 2017 PLC Totals: 85 quilts, 57 school kits, 9 layettes and

3 fabric kits.

IT'S PEACE GARDEN SEASON

Once again we are enjoying the tulips and daffodils in the Peace Garden. The weeds and unwanted grass are growing well also. This season Julie Mattson, Cindy Gee and I (Diane Oddy) are planning to work in the garden on Friday mornings starting at 9AM. We would love help at any time during the summer. The soil is wonderful to work in (by Belgrade standards) and Julie and Cindy are a wealth of gardening knowledge. Please join us for some sun, fun and dirt.
