    1 World Population Day: 11 JulyThe theme for 2015 World Population Day is Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies

    1. World population has edged passed 7 billion people in 2011 (up from 2.5 billion in 1950.

    2. A world of 7 billion is both a challenge and an opportunity with implications on sustain-ability, urbanization, access to health services and youth empowerment.

    3. In 1989, in its decision 89/46, the Governing Council of the United Nations DevelopmentProgramme recommended that 11 July should be observed by the international communityas World Population Day.

    4. The world is seeing a record number of people displaced by crises some 60 millionaccording to the latest UN figures.

    2 First earthquake early warning system of India in Uttarak-hand

    1. India has installed an earthquake early warning system for the first time to detect earth-quakes and disseminate warnings in Uttarakhand. The researchers have predicted anearthquake of magnitude 8 or greater in the region.

    2. The early warning system will issue warnings 1-40 seconds before earthquakes of mag-nitude 5 occur.

    3. All sensors [systems] that warn of earthquakes are based on the detection of P and Swaves generated during an earthquake. The P wave, which is harmless and travels fasterthan the S wave, is detected by the sensors for advance warning,

    5 USA wins 2015 Womens FIFA World Cup

    The U.S. Womens National Team won its first Womens World Cup title since 1999, beatingJapan 5-2 Sunday. The USA is the only country to ever win three Womens World Cup titles.

    6 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics to be held in Bei-jing

    1. The XXIV Olympic Winter Games also known as the 2022 Winter Olympics , is amulti-sport event to be organized in Beijing, China.

    2. It will be the third consecutive Olympic Games held in Asia, after Pyeongchang 2018 andTokyo 2020. Having hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics,

    3. Beijing will be the first city ever to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics sincethe split of the Summer and Winter Olympics. It will also be the largest city to hostthe Winter Olympics, a credit that was previously given to Turin which hosted the 2006Winter Olympics. The games will be held on 420 February 2022.

    7 India to become most populous nation by 20221. Not a good sign for India

    2. India is on track to become the worlds most populous nation in less than a decade orsix years earlier than previously thought, according to the U.N.

    3. With 1.38 billion people compared with Indias 1.31 billion, China is currently the worldsmost populous country. Figures for both countries are expected to swell to around 1.4billion by 2022, at which point Indias population is likely to expand beyond Chinas.

    4. At the end of the next decade, in 2030, India is projected to have 1.5 billion people, afigure thats forecast to balloon to 1.7 billion by 2050. Chinas population, on the otherhand, is forecast to remain relatively stable until the 2030s, at which point the U.N. saysit is likely to slightly decrease. In a forecast published two years ago, India had beenexpected to overtake China around the year 2028.

    8 Ramon Magsaysay Awards: 20151. The Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) announced

    that this year five individuals from India, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines will receiveAsias premier prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award. The 2015 Magsaysay Awardees are:

    2. Kommaly Chanthavong, from Laos. She is being recognized for her fearless, indomitablespirit to revive and develop the ancient Laotian art of silk weaving, creating livelihoods forthousands of poor, war-displaced Laotians, and thus preserving the dignity of women andher nations priceless silken cultural treasure.

    3. Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa, from the Philippines. She is being recognized for hersingle-minded crusade in preserving the endangered artistic heritage of southern Philip-pines, and in creatively propagating a dance form that celebrates and deepens the senseof shared cultural identity among Asians.

    4. Anshu Gupta, from India. He is being recognized for his creative vision in transformingthe culture of giving in India, his enterprising leadership in treating cloth as a sustainabledevelopment resource for the poor, and in reminding the world that true giving alwaysrespects and preserves human dignity.

    5. Kyaw Thu, from Myanmar. He is being recognized for his generous compassion inaddressing the fundamental needs of both the living and the dead in Myanmar regardlessof their class or religion and his channeling personal fame and privilege to mobilize manyothers toward serving the greater social good.

    6. Sanjiv Chaturvedi, for Emergent Leadership, from India. He is being recognized for hisexemplary integrity, courage and tenacity in uncompromisingly exposing and painstakinglyinvestigating corruption in public office, and his resolute crafting of program and systemimprovements to ensure that government honorably serves the people of India.Established in 1957, the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asias highest honor and iswidely regarded as the regions equivalent of the Nobel Prize. It celebrates the memoryand leadership example of the third Philippine president after whom the award is named,and is given every year to individuals or organizations in Asia who manifest the sameselfless service and transformative influence that ruled the life of the late and belovedFilipino leader.

    9 Missile man APJ Abdul Kalam passed away

    We lost one of the best prime minister that we ever had. Rest in Peace FormerPresident Abdul Kalam died while giving a lecture in Shillong. On 27 July 2015, Kalam travelledto Shillong to deliver a lecture on "Creating a Livable Planet Earth" at the Indian Institute ofManagement Shillong. At around 6:35 p.m. IST, only five minutes into his lecture, he collapsed.He was rushed to the nearby Bethany Hospital in a critical condition; upon arrival, he lackeda pulse or any other signs of life. Despite being placed in the intensive care unit, Kalam wasconfirmed dead of a sudden cardiac arrest at 7:45 p.m IST.

After its initial blooming, there can be considerable variationin blooming frequency. Some plants may not bloom again for another 710 years whileothers may bloom every two to three years

    11 16th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas1. In my opinion Kargil war was one of the biggest intelligence failure of the recent time.

    2. Kargil Vijay Diwas, named after the success of Operation Vijay. On this day, 26 July 1999,India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistaniintruders.

    3. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days, ended on 26 July. and resulted inthe loss of life on both sides, India and Pakistan. Pakistan retreated after internationaldiplomatic pressure

    12 National Mission for Skill DevelopmentIndia is growing at a good pace and in order to maintain this pace we need skilled workers,unfortunately most of the graduates coming out of collages in India at present are not skilledenough for todays needs and industry.

    The objective of NSDC is to fulfill the growing need for skilled manpower in thecountry, mainly by fostering private sector initiatives in skill development. The salientfeatures of NSDC are:

    1. Upgrade skills of work force through significant industry involvement especially for under-privileged sections of society and backward regions of the country.

    2. Enhance, support and coordinate private sector initiatives for skill development throughPublic-Private Partnership (PPP) models.

    3. Prioritize initiatives that can have a multiplier or catalytic effect.NSDC has a target of skilling / upskilling 150 mn people by the year 2022 and so far3 proposals have been cleared to train 10,39,000 persons in next 10 years.

    13 Union Civil Aviation Ministry launched GAGAN System1. Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, formally launched the

    GAGAN system (GPS AIDED GEO AUGMENTED NAVIGATION) at a functionhere today. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister congratulated the entire team ondevelopment of the GAGAN project.

    2. GAGAN is the first SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in the world certifiedfor Approach with Vertical Guidance operating in the Equatorial Ionospheric region andthe third SBAS to have achieved this feat, after WAAS of USA and EGNOS of Europe.GAGAN was already certified for en route operation since 30th December 2013.

    3. GAGAN is a joint effort of Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space ResearchOrganization (ISRO). In the aviation field, GAGAN will support more direct air routes,reduce fuel consumption and improve safety. In addition, GAGAN provides benefits toagriculture, all modes of transportation and public services such a defence services, securityagencies and disaster recovery management by aiding in search and rescue to locate thedisaster zone accurately.

    4. Since 14th February 2014, GAGAN has been continuously providing navigation signalsfrom GSAT-8 and GSAT-10 satellites launched by ISRO, augmenting the performance ofGPS signals received over Indian Airspace.

    14 Paes-Hingis win Wimbledon

    15 Patnitop Tunnel1. Indias longest road tunnel, being built on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, will be

    opened for general traffic in July 2016 and would reduce the distance between the twocities by 30 kms.

    2. The 9.2 km tunnel is part of 286 km-long four-laning project of the Jammu-Srinagarnational highway.

    3. The tunnel, connecting Chenani in Udhampur with Nashri in Ramban district, is beingcompleted at a cost of over Rs. 2500 crore.

    Serena Williams won her 21st Grand Slam title with a dominant victory over Garbine Muguruzain the Wimbledon finals.
