MERCY CORNER The virtue of Mercy is at the very center of the Christian Gos-pel. It is the reason for the Incarnation. It is the motivation of our faith, for mercy reveals the true love of God the Father for all of us.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the prayer we all have been given by Jesus himself, The Lord’s Prayer. One of the petitions in that prayer is, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” (Luke 11:4) In this passage we are taught, rightfully, to ask for and to contem-plate God the Father’s generous mercy toward us, but we are also taught that we must practice that same mercy toward those who have injured us in our own personal lives. This is a powerful thought. We are challenged to see that the unde-served mercy we receive from God requires us to be merciful in turn. Our faith is not a passive thing. As James tells us in his letter, “Faith without good works is dead.” (James 2:14-26) What is the greatest “work” of our faith? Is it not mercy, the act of forgiveness? Is this not the chiefest act of Love? In participating in the love of God through mercy, we are promised His mercy in return. That is an exchange worthy of we who have been made in the very image and likeness of God. Mercy is a mercy does. Let us meditate on this powerful thought. Let us practice it often.

Lord, your mercy is the source of our lives now and forever. We ask you to help us, then, to be strong in mercy in our own daily lives. You have commanded us to love one another as you have loved us. Increase our faith and strengthen our wills to do this more and more regularly, at home and abroad. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

117th Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme: The Lord’s Prayer is a map for life. Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lin-gers in your memory? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Prayer is talking with God and listening to God in our hearts. Where do you talk to God and how do you listen to what God says to you? Question for Youth: Jesus teaches us how important it is to pray. How do you ask God for what you need? How do you listen for his response? Question for Adults: Jesus teaches us how to pray. When this past week did you take the time to pray, to talk to and listen to God?

July 28, 2019 - 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Luke 11:9) Jesus assures us that if we ask, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that our culture often confuses what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

Weekly Reflection July 28, 2019 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Ask any award-winning movie actor or celebrity athlete and they are bound to admit that their success has happened only with a heavy dose of perseverance. The same holds for every doctor, lawyer and Indian chief. It is also axiomatic that they might have given up at any time along their path but they were determined to succeed.

For the most part, the same holds true for most of the people we call “saints.” Our Lady and John the Baptist are among the excep-tions of course, and then there is that unnamed “Good Thief” whose last “theft,” that of entrance to Paradise, happened just by asking Jesus to remember him as they both were dying on their crosses. Sometimes prayer is the easiest thing for us to do. Times of thanksgiving. Times before a big test or an important appoint-ment. Times of fear and anxiety before serious surgery. Times of mourning for persons we have loved as they near death. At other times, prayer is the most difficult thing to do. When we are angry at the crazed, violent or heartless behavior of our fellow human beings. Or when we know we are supposed to pray for those we consider our enemies.

Easy or difficult, we know we have an obligation to pray. It springs from the fact that there is a God who created us out of nothing and that we are here on earth as His creatures. It is an obligation however that derives from love rather than law. It is worth the time and effort it takes for that reason alone. I wonder sometimes if prayer seems difficult and perseverance in it next to impossible because of certain attachments we make to it that have nothing to do with it. Take kneeling as the only “correct” posture for prayer. That may spring from childhood instruction to kneel by our bed at night to “say our prayers.” That’s fine for awhile, but when we get to the age when kneeling is physically difficult, there is a problem. That old guy named “Arthur Itis” can be tough when he settles in as our permanent companion.

Another falsehood often attached to prayer is that it must be done early in the morning. This one may derive from orders of monks and consecrated religious who pray communally what is called “The Liturgy of the Hours.” Its old name was “The Divine Office, with “office” meaning “task” or “duty.” This beautiful prayer ob-viously has set times for its observance, with at least two parts specifically meant to be prayed in the morning.

Practically speaking, many ordinary men and women, especially parents, are very busy in the morning with routines involving themselves and their children getting ready for their day. Or it may simply be that they or you are not “morning people.” We must note that prayer can be offered at any time, but make it at the best time for you. And do it at the same time every day. The main thing is for all of us to be praying people. To persevere as Abraham did when he nervously bargained with Yahweh. As all the saints did throughout their lives, so conscious were they that we have no lasting city here below.

The greatest form of prayer is praise. We do not ask anything for ourselves, but simply praise God for who He is, and all He has done for us.

July 28, 2019 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week Mary Magdalene, Disciple of Jesus, First Century With the exception of Mary, the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in Scripture than Mary Magda-lene. An unfounded, but persistent legend identifies her as the unnamed, sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus (Luke 7:37-38), but this story has largely been discounted by modern church scholars. The next chapter of Luke's Gospel mentions Mary Magdalene as the one from whom Christ cast out "seven devils," - an indication, at the worst, of extreme demonic possession, or, more likely, severe illness. Mary probably received her name from Magdala, a place on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee near Tiberias. It seems likely that Jesus first met her while on his Galilean ministry. Many legends surround Mary, but no evidence exists to confirm any of them. According to a French tra-dition, for example, Mary Magdalene is identified as the Mary who is the sister of Martha and Lazarus. In this sto-ry, she accompanied Martha and Lazarus to Marseilles where the three evangelized the people of Provence. While no factual evidence supports this legend, a great devotion to St. Mary Magdalene exists today in southern France and parts of northern Italy along the Mediterrane-an. Mary was one of many who helped support Jesus and his apostles during Jesus' ministry (Luke 8:3). But perhaps Mary Magdalene is best remembered for her closeness to Jesus during his passion, death, and resurrection. Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the cross with Jesus' moth-er and St. John. Out of all of the disciples of Jesus who might have been selected, Mary Magdalene was the first to become aware of the Resurrection when she came to Jesus' tomb early on Easter morning to anoint his body. Mary's message today: It isn' t really impor tant wheth-er Mary Magdalene was a great sinner, possessed by de-mons, or very sick. What is important is that she became one of Jesus' good friends and a disciple. That is also what is important for us today: the relationship which we have with Jesus right now. What kind of a relationship do you have with Jesus? Do you consider him a friend and companion for your life’s journey?

MISSION CO-OP: JULY 27th—28th

THE CONGREGATION OF THE BROTHERS OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS, INDIA The Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SHJ) is a religious brotherhood congregation, in India, founded in 1903 by Rev.Fr. Adrian Caussanel SJ with charism of "Good News to the poor in the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus". Today there are 220 professed religious brothers who carry out their mis-sion in 20 Catholic dioceses of different states which include Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The Congregation is currently under the leadership of Rev. Br. M. Velankanni SHJ, having 46 religious communities in different parts of India. The main charism of the congregation is education to the poor, besides social involvement, spiritual orientation and human resource development. At present, the con-gregation administers 76 formal schools, colleges, child care centres and 34 Non-formal skills training centres. Apart from education ministry, The Congre-gation also engages in apostolic works of prison ministry, hospital ministry and care for the dropout children. We are happy to inform that our congregation, alt-hough brotherhood, is very much growing in India due to their spiritual, social and economic commit-ments and as a result, there is an invitation from bishops to open catholic education centers in differ-ent locations. The congregation reads the signs of the time and responds accordingly, having a special focus to educating the Dalit youth and Tribal children in northern India. Unfortunately we don't have a house in those areas. We appeal to your generosity towards putting up a technical school for Maha Da-lilts and tribal youth in the state of Bihar and a boarding home for the dropout children from the marginalized sections of the society. We assure you that your kind and generous donations will be spent for the above purposes. May God bless you and your families for your noble gesture towards our mis-sion in India. Thank you very much for supporting our mission. Fr. Bernard Santiago On behalf of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, India

Mateo.

JULY 28, 2019 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DO YOU WANT TO APPROACH CHALLENGES MORE AGGRESSIVELY? We are all made equal in that no one is blessed with a prob-lem-free life. Where we differ is in the kinds of problems we have, and especially in how we face our problems. Jesus' teachings provide directives for a more aggressive approach to life's challenges. If you, or anyone you know, would like to hear more about how Jesus' teachings help us to deal with the problems in our lives, we invite you to join us at an Inquiry Session. Inquiry sessions DO NOT assume a com-mitment to join the Catholic Faith family. Inquiry sessions are opportunities to ask questions about God, Jesus, the Catholic Faith. All who are unbaptized, baptized into anoth-er faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, are invited. Inquiry ses-sions are for those who wish to inquire, explore, and search for ways to grow in relationship with God. For more information, call RCIA at 609-397-3350.
