Meet the new Neapolitan Family Co-Publishers!
All good things must come to an end and, for me, that good thing is publish-ing Neapolitan Family. My family is in California and it’s time for me to be as well. I’m so excited to announce that as of the September issue, Neapolitan Family will have two new co-publishers: Leigh Ann Newman and Stacy Nico-lau. I couldn’t be happier about turning the reins over to Leigh Ann and Stacy. You’ll recognize both names from the masthead: Stacy has been Assistant Publisher for several years and Leigh Ann has been copy editor for almost as long. They both have strong journalism backgrounds and have written for the magazine on a variety of topics. In other words, they are uniquely qualified to be taking on this challenge. I have no doubt that only good things are in store for Neapolitan Family.
I‘ll share more about my plans next month but for now, please join me in wel-coming Stacy and Leigh Ann to their new positions. You can find their contact information to the left of the letter.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS By Amanda Jackson, Communications & Community Engagement
In a growing digital world, there are more ways than ever to communicate. Here at
Collier County Public Schools, we want to offer families more options to personalize how they receive important information from their schools and the district. For the 2016-17 school year, we’ll be debuting new contact preferences, where you the parent can choose how you want to be communicated with, including text messages.
To begin the process, you need to visit the Parent Portal, a link to the Portal may be found on the Parents Page by visiting www.collierschools.com. After signing in with your 10-digit parent code, you’ll receive an alert about updating your contact preferences. Next, you’ll be directed to update your con-tact information before choosing how you wish you receive emergency and essential school information. This includes the e-mails
and phone calls you might already receive but you’ll have an option to opt-in to text message notifications, a highly-anticipated feature. Our goal is to gather the most ac-curate information from parents and reduce the amount of intrusive robocalls. The Portal will also host the district’s media release form and directory.
It’s our hope that being able to update information online will ease some stress for parents, reducing the number of papers to complete during the first week of school.
If you haven’t used the Parent Portal before or don’t know your code, don’t worry. You can access this information with your cell phone number or e-mail address associ-ated with the district. When you access the Portal, you can watch videos that will walk you through the process.
Another way to stay up-to-date with
your child’s school this year is through Face-book. By the time school begins next month, every CCPS school will have its own page, in addition to Twitter. They’ll be posting important information there as well so be sure to give them a ‘like’ in August.
While we HOPE you enjoy these new communications options, we want to KNOW.
The district is currently seeking parents interested in sharing feedback, thoughts, and ideas on the district’s communications efforts. The group will meet quarterly beginning in October.
We’ll be asking the following questions and more. Do you prefer text messages as op-posed to robocalls? Have you downloaded the district app, and if so, what notifications do you want to receive? Are you active on social media and enjoy getting a glimpse into your child’s classroom? Do you visit your child’s school website for important information or the district website? When you do visit, do you find what you need? Do you watch the weekly CCPS News web cast? If not, why?

RACHEL RECOMMENDS Book Reviews
RACHEL’sThe Babysitters Club the novel, I’m sure, is a really good book. But, I
haven’t read it. How can I assume this? Well, I read the graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier. A graphic novel is a fancy term for comic book. The Babysitters Club graphic novel is based on the novel, of the same title, by Ann M. Martin.
There are four books in the graphic novel series. My favorite book in the series was Claudia and Mean Janine. This is the fourth and final book in the series. I am really quite fond of this book because it was the usual drama between the siblings, younger sister versus older sister—the clas-sic competition. But I feel that this author found something, an event, that pulled the sisters together. Not just the family bonds, or the sudden realization that you should really care about your sibling. The book actually shows how families can change the way they think of each other because of one-life changing event.
The funniest problem/solution that the babysitters club (B.S.C.) had to face was when Jenny, a little girl in the B.S.C. playgroup, would not put on a smock to do crafts. Another girl, Karen, who liked to tell stories to the other children (ones that may have been a bit exaggerated), told Jenny that her little brother Andrew, who was awfully shy, that Andrew was going to become a monster, because of a curse placed on him by the next door neighbor. I love funny moments, the author really made a connection to the reader by reminding us of
all the stories little kids make up, the funny and scary ones.
When Claudia (vice president of the B.S.C.) learns something valuable from Jamie, one of the children, it really warms my heart. Little children often are underes-timated, but they have pretty big brains and hearts inside their bodies. We could really learn a lot from little kids. Back on track, Jamie’s new baby sister, Lucy, is getting lots of presents and attention, and then there was a party for Lucy’s christening. Jamie is jealous, and almost does something he would have regretted for a very long time. Jamie stopped because he loved his sister, and the words stuck with Claudia for a long time: “I love her. She IS my sister.” When little kids teach you a lesson, it’s pretty hard to forget.
Raina Telgemeier has written quite a few graphic novels, including Smile, Sisters, Ghosts, Fantasmas, and Drama. I own Drama and hope to read it soon.
I don’t normally read graphic novels but chose to read one now because it’s the
RACHEL NEWMAN is 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Sea Gate Elementary. She is active in Irish dancing, piano, flute, acting and volleyball. Writing, reading, and watching “I Love Lucy” are her great joys, along with taking pictures of her cats.
beginning of summer: you want to relax, no tests, no teachers, just you and your pajamas. Don’t get me wrong, I love read-ing, really I do, but sometimes I would like something easier and below grade level, so I had my four book summer beach read. Graphic novels give you the time to relax, and I never thought, “How many more pages?” The illustrations are beauti-ful, and onomatopoeias (look it up if you don’t know this word) were written in the pictures, which really gives graphic novels their own special touch.
I would recommend this book to children around six to 12. This book does not have difficult vocabulary, but there is definitely a lesson to learn in all of these books. Younger readers can read this just for fun, and for 10 years and older, your comprehension gets thicker, so you can understand the lesson The Babysitters Club has to teach you.

NEW MOM’S CORNER By Anna Snyder
Are you a new mom of twins or triplets? If so, I applaud you! Before I experienced motherhood, I thought that somehow
having twins might be easier in some way. Since having my little one I quickly realized how wrong I was. Moms of multiples have a unique experience particularly while their children are young.
What, exactly, do moms with twins experi-ence? I spoke with two moms in Naples about their experience with twins.

Anna: Tell me about your family. Lindsey: My husband, Nate, and I have four-year-old twins named Addisyn and Gavin. We love being outdoors, doing crafts, and boating, and we are very active in our church.
How did you feel when you first found out you were having twins? We found out that we were having twins during our first appointment! The ultra-sound tech didn’t waste any time. She said, “Here’s baby A, and here’s baby B.” Nate thought that she was kidding at first, but I was not surprised.
My grandmother is a fraternal twin, so I always thought I’d have a good chance of having them, too. We were both so excited and couldn’t wait. We didn’t know any better. Since they were our first children, we didn’t think it could be that much harder. We were in for a big surprise.
What do you enjoy about having twins? Everything is double the fun, laughs, and love. We have so much fun together, and watching them grow and learn is amazing. We are just so blessed to be able to raise them and be their parents. It has been really fascinating to watch them develop into their own people. They navigated to their own interests and at their own paces, and you can’t compare the one to the other. Everything takes additional planning and virtually everything is made for someone with one baby. I don’t necessarily think everything about having twins is more difficult—everyone has their own unique challenges as a parent. With twins, there is just one more of everything and much less sleep. Nursing for multiples is more difficult.
What do you wish others understood about what it’s like to be a mom of multiples?

Moms of multiples need patience—patience for the mom loading two babies into their car seats, loading the diaper bag, and folding down the stroller. Also, please don’t tell a mom for twins that it is double the trouble. Kids are a blessing, and encouraging words go so far. I had a woman stop and tell me what a great job I was doing at a grocery store. I don’t know that I was, because I was just trying to keep it together, but instead of offering advice or a comment, she encouraged me.
How do you think your experience is different to that of other moms? I am just trying to raise two little people who love God and know that they are loved. If I’ve done that, I’ve succeeded. Again, I draw on patience a lot, and am always trying to use ev-erything as an opportunity to teach them. With two, it’s important to get a break. My husband and I know when it’s time for the other person to take over.
Do you have any advice for moms expecting multiples? You will need help, so take what you can get! We were lucky to have family to help us when our twins were first born. I was determined to nurse them, and without help. That would have been so easy to give up on, especially as I was only getting a 10-minute nap between feedings the first couple weeks.
together. I enjoy dressing all of my boys alike. My oldest loves to match with his brothers. The boys all play well together now that they are older. It is so much fun that they all have each other as playmates.
What do you wish others knew about what it’s like to be a mom of multiples? I wish people knew how stressful it can be to have two young children the same age. I have kids running in all different directions. It’s hard to discipline all three of them. Yes, I get it done, but sometimes I have to rush because I never know what the others are doing!
How do you think your experience is different and/or similar to that of other moms?I think that my experience as a mom is shaped by the fact that I have all boys in my home. Our house is very wild, crazy, loud, and fun.
Do you have any advice for moms expecting mulitples? Buy lots of cribs sheets and waterproof liners. The first night we were home, we laid them on layers of towels instead of directly on the sheet. Otherwise, we would have changed the crib sheets a total of four times the first night! Having multiples is hard, and the lack of sleep is difficult. Rely on any help you can get!

My best advice is to cherish every single moment. Write down the highlights at the end of the day, and ask questions of ANY mom of multiples you can find. We had conversations with people at restaurants, grocery stores—any-where we could find a mom with multiples. I bought our stroller based on a conversation with mom of multiples in Michigan at the Pancake House!

Anna: Tell me about your family. Julie: My husband, Carlos, and I have a six-year-old boy named Marcos and three-year-old twin boys named Lucas and Mateo. We got pregnant on our honeymoon with our first, and my first pregnancy was so difficult, I wished it was twins so I would never have to get pregnant again!
How did you feel when you first found out you were having twins? We couldn’t believe it. The fact that we had twins didn’t really sink in until Lucas and Mateo were about three months old. We were thrilled, though, especially since in between pregnancies, we had gone through a miscarriage. Having twins gave us so much joy.
What do you enjoy about having twins? I love having twins! We all have so much fun

Parents don’t want to think about it, so kids are often unprepared. Cyberbullying may seem like something that happens to other people, but the statistics say otherwise. A study from the Pew
Research Center found that, among adults, 40% have experienced online harassment and 73 % have witnessed it. (The sad facts are summarized at onlineharassmentdata.org)
For teens, the numbers are a little lower, though researchers note that many adolescents don’t report incidents of cyberbullying for the same reason they don’t talk about offline harassment: They feel intimidated and humiliated. They assume nothing can be done. And they worry talking to adults will make the problem worse.
That’s why parents need to be proactive. The hard fact is that most children will eventually encounter people who use the Internet to intimidate, harass and threaten others. The best way to fortify kids is to talk--in advance—about what cyberbullying is, how to prevent it and what can be done when it happens. Here’s some of what your child needs to know:
Recognize it when you see it. Cyberbullying comes in many forms. The mildest is mean comments, name-calling and shaming. Painful as this may be for the target, it’s not dangerous. Learning to shake off mean and ignorant comments is a life skill. To give kids perspective, talk about the American tradi-tion of free speech. Even nasty, mis-informed people have a right to their opinion. That doesn’t mean your child should give them time or attention.
Other forms of harassment are more serious, especially if they continue day after day. These include threats of personal harm in-cluding rape, spreading lies that damage a person’s reputation, posting personal information including cell phone numbers or sexual photos and techno attacks such as taking control of a social media account. Help your child distinguish between unpleasantness and risk.
Be proactive. The best way to deal with any problem is to avoid it. Raise your child with the assumption that people will be kind to each other. Model that way of living in your home, and help your child find friends who respect and appreciate each other. Online, help your child build a community where people treat each other well. Point your child toward the helpful Social Media Safety Guides produced by Heart-mob (iheartmob.org/safety_guide). There are separate guides with straightforward explanations of privacy tools for Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, and Youtube.

Report—sometimes. Experts give contradictory advice about how to respond to cyberbul-lies. Some recommend ignoring the behavior because most bullies are looking for reaction and attention. This is especially true online where anyone can say anything to anyone. Others recommend telling the bully to stop. That is also easier—and somewhat safer—online where it’s possible to send a private message that may appeal to the other person’s sense of fair play.
Threats of abuse or harm should be documented by saving mes-sages or capturing screen shots. Notify local police or the FBI with the understanding that they may be ineffective because laws lag behind technology in many states. The Cyberbullying Research Center maintains a comprehensive library of materials about cyberbullying including a complete list of regulations in every state (cyberbullying.org/cyberbullying-laws).
Internet services are also inconsistent in how they define and respond to harassment. Twitter, for example, recently started a Trust and Safety Council “to ensure that people feel safe expressing themselves on Twitter”-- and was immediately slammed for restricting free speech. This is a good topic for dinner table discussion before a problem arises. If you were running a social media site, what limits would you put on what people can post? How should someone decide whether to ignore, confront or report a cyberbully?
Get creative. Because bullies can’t always be avoided and authorities can’t always be effective, a growing number of people are taking creative steps to make the Internet—or at least corners of it— safer for everyone. Kids who know about these efforts are less likely to feel hopeless about bullying if it happens to them or they witness it. They may still feel shock, shame and even fear, but they will also know that they have allies and role models who have figured out effective ways to respond. • A Thin Line provides detailed information about online harass-
ment and encourages kids to share steps they’ve taken to assert their digital rights. The site, developed by MTV, also has a For Grownups Section that lists helpful resources (athinline.org/pages/parents-and-educators)
• StompOutBullying runs a free, confidential chat line for teens over 13. Trained volunteers provide support to young people who are distressed about online harassment. (stompoutbullying.org)
• We Heart It is a social media app that limits harassment by al-lowing users to “heart” but not comment on content uploaded by others. (weheartit.com)
• The Speech Project details all the ways young women can be harassed online. The tools and resources section provides up-to-date information about what girls and young women can do to protect and defend themselves. (wmcspeechproject.com).
• StopIt is a software platform that allows people within a commu-nity to anonymously send screenshots of material that is offensive or abusive. Schools that use the app have seen a reduction in the number of cyberbullying incidents. (stopitcyberbully.com) It’s natural for parents to want their children to live in a kinder,
safer world. At the same time, parents need to equip children with the skills they need to cope with problems should they arise. When parents talk—in advance—about communities that have mobilized to combat cyberbullying, children become stronger, more confident and more likely to respond constructively to whatever comes their way online.

Summer vacations and summer camps can be fun but why not use this summer to stimulate volun-teerism and cultivate charitable giving in your kids? Engage kids in charitable giving in a mean-ingful way may create lasting memories and build character that outlast summer vacations.
Sally was nine years old and her sister Emily was seven years old when they began volun-
teering at their local food bank with their family. Volunteering included sorting boxes and cans of food into different groups and then packing family boxes for the low income families that the food bank serves. The first time Sally and Emily volunteered, they asked lots of questions and en-joyed the can conveyer belt tremendously. The food bank volunteer manager had things well organized so the kids were engaged the entire time. In order to make the experience purpose-ful, their mom pointed out the families waiting in the lobby who were to receive the boxes of food. As they were leaving the food bank, the volunteer manager heard Sally say, “This was
one of the best days of my life!” Her sister Em-ily decided to give the money she earned doing extra chores around the house to the food bank.
Service learning can be a parenting and teaching strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflec-tion. Service learning also builds character and teaches civic responsibility as youth participate in service projects in education, public welfare, health, public safety or the environment. Fami-lies can volunteer together and reap all the ben-efits of service learning while making a memory.
Teaching service is most effective when children give something meaningful to them. One example of an age appropriate, meaningful service project for first and second graders is a teddy bear drive for abused children of domestic violence in shelters or hospitals. Children can be encouraged to give a stuffed animal of their own that is in good shape or earn the money by doing household chores to make a purchase themselves. Children can also travel to the shelter to drop off the stuffed animals so that the “giving” is concrete.
Children may come up with their own ideas about service projects that have special meaning to them. Older children may work together to sell candy or crafts at a profit to purchase items for less fortunate families such as children’s coats. Service learning studies show that children who serve are more likely to grow to become charitable adults.

Volunteering and giving can give your winter special meaning. Here are a few suggestions.• Perhaps your children have had a relative
or neighbor die with cancer. It might be meaningful to plan a walk/ run for cancer research or donate their own money earned from chores to a local hospital that has a tie to your family.
• Mow and weed an elderly neighbor’s yard. Organize a kids pool of lawn service volun-teers for elders in multiple neighborhoods.
• Organize and conduct a canned food drive at your child’s summer school or camp together. This may involve several steps including making posters, decorating the collection boxes and finally taking the cans to the food pantry or food bank.)
• Walk dogs at the local humane society shelter.
• Collect new or like new books for the chil-dren’s wing of the hospital and delivering the books to the hospital auxiliary.
• Buy school supplies for the children who cannot afford them.
• Organize a letter writing campaign to service men and women who have ties to your local community. Working together as a family for others
not only strengthens communities by helping the cause or causes of your choice, but it also models good character and strengthens family bonds that create memorable summers.

ONE TANK TRIPS By Anna Snyder
One of my favorite things about Florida is that the weather en-courages residents to get out and explore during every season of the year (yes, even during the endlessly hot and humid summer
months). So, after some weeks of research and consideration, my family and I made a few treks around the southern part of Florida to visit some places I had never heard of.
How did we come up with our list? The requirement was simple – adventures had to be accessible to families from Naples. This meant that we needed to be able to get there and back in a day, and on one tank of gas. The trips needed to be family friendly. We have a two year old, and for us, that meant we needed to be back in the car by 1:30 or 2pm for naptime to avoid any type of massive meltdown.
My husband, Jim, grew up in Naples, as did his father (his grandfa-ther settled in Naples after World War II). I would consider him–and his parents –experts on family-friendly adventures in Southern Florida. Even with Jim’s heritage as a Naples native, though, all of the places on our list were things he hadn’t yet experienced.
I’m always drawn to the Florida State Park system – Jim and I are attempting to see all 160 state parks throughout the course of our mar-riage, and I have loved our visits to various areas around Florida. I enjoy learning about Florida’s rich history and varied ecosystems. So a few state parks made it on our summer list (six adventures will be covered over the course of two articles).
Needless to say, there are so many great adventures in Florida! This two-part list (the second installment will be in the August issues) certainly isn’t exhaustive, but we did have fun coming up with ideas and going on these one-day adventures (most of which could have been weekend trips). Get out there this summer as a family, and make some memories together!

marine life. The Aquarium opened in 1980 on City Island in Sarasota Bay. Visitors can see otters, sharks, manatees, sea turtles, seahorses, rays, skates and invertebrates. Mote Aquarium also includes windows into Mote’s working laboratories.
Mote Marine Laboratory is one of the oldest marine research labo-ratories in Florida. The Lab was founded in 1955 by the famous shark lady, Dr. Eugenie Clark. Although Dr. Clark passed away last year, Mote still carries on her legacy by conducting world class marine research and educating the public about our oceans, and how we can all become better stewards of the marine environment.
The aquarium is housed in two separate buildings, and we loved that the tanks were at eye level for our toddler-aged daughter. The highlight for us was the sea turtle exhibit, which housed several sea turtles who had been rescued as a result of various circumstances. The aquarium was an indoor/outdoor environment that was completely shaded and air conditioned.
There are many programs, events, and boat tours throughout the day – and the programs at Mote Marine are fantastic. The boat tours looked particularly worthwhile and exciting, but they would have been too much to take on with a toddler. If you go, bring plenty of snacks and water bottles, and consider packing a lunch. There is an outdoor eating area with picnic tables. Additionally, Mote Marine offers a Deep Sea Diner for casual eating inside the aquarium.

Located about 2 ½ hours away just west of West Palm Beach, Lion Country Safari was originally developed by a group of South African
and British entrepreneurs about 40 years ago; they desired to bring the experience of an African safari and game park to Southern Florida. Today, Lion Country Safari houses about 900 animals in a drive-through preserve and exhibit area.
Along with the drive-through safari preserve area, visitors can visit a theme-park attraction area that houses other animal exhibits, a petting zoo, boat rides, a giraffe feeding area, carnival-style rides, a mini-golf area, and a large splash pad water feature for children. The theme park area also has several eateries and gift shops.
We went to Lion Country Safari on a Saturday, and we arrived right when it opened. There were already lots of cars waiting to drive through the preserve. The drive-through safari took us about 45 minutes and it included a CD narration that taught us about the park and the animals we would see. Our daughter was thrilled with the animals, and I’ll admit – I was amazed at the size of the preserve.
After driving through the impressive safari area, we took some time to walk through the theme-park area and eat lunch. We enjoyed the ad-ditional zoo-style animal exhibits. There is also a splash pad, mini-golf and rides all of which are included in the ticket price.
Lion Country Safari has a KOA campground on its campus, com-plete with cabins. For families who might enjoy spending a full day at the preserve and theme park, spending the night might make sense. Visitors we encountered who camped said they were able to hear lions roaring and other animals in the preserve in the early hours of the morning – which de-pending upon the ages of your children, would be a memorable experience!

Cayo Costa is a remote barrier island located in Southwest Florida just north of Captiva and west of Pine Island. 90% of the island is
uninhabited and is part of the state park; it contains 9 miles of beaches and acres of pine forests, hammocks and mangrove swamps. The island is perfect for sight fishing, snorkeling, swimming, and shelling. Miles of trails weave through the island, and the park provides primitive cabins and tent camping sites.
Captiva Cruises is a family-friendly cruise service that offers and array of trips for visitors to access Cayo Costa (as well as other barrier islands and locations in the surrounding area). They are a very family-friendly company that honors the history of Southwest Florida barrier islands and unique ecosystem of Pine Island Sound. There are so many adventure cruises from which to choose, and they have cruises that range the gambit from one hour to full-day expeditions.
We selected a cruise that left from McCarthy Marina on Captiva Island at 9 AM and took us to a private, very remote beach at Cayo Costa State Park. The boat ride took about 35 minutes, and the captain and guide on board the boat were fantastic. We learned a lot about the history of the barrier islands and state park, and we got to see some fantastic wildlife. We spent about almost two hours on Cayo Costa’s beautiful beach, which was lovely. I brought plenty of snacks and cold drinks, and I’m so thankful I did. With a toddler in tow, spending so much time on the beach can be a challenge. I’m also glad I brought our ergonomic baby carrier, as we spent some time walking the beach in search of fish (my husband brought along some fishing gear).
The beauty of this adventure was refreshing, though the heat and sun were intense. I’m thankful we went in the morning, and we were back in the air conditioning by noon. The boat had shade, but the beach was very sunny. Captiva Cruises offered an exceptional experience for our family.

Conservancy of Southwest Florida to offer Kids Free Saturdays in July and August
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida will offer free admission for children every Saturday during the months of July and August
2016. As part of the Conservancy’s commitment to connecting children with nature this summer, the Conservancy is offering up to four kids free with a paid adult ticket at $12.95.
Visitors can travel around the Conservancy of Southwest Florida as they play games, create crafts and get up close with animals while learning about Southwest Florida’s environments and wildlife. Over the course of eight Saturdays, children can earn “Conservancy Explorer” pins to add to their “Junior Naturalist” sash.
Visitors can explore the interactive Dalton Discovery Center, which features the wondrous ecosystems of Southwest Florida. They can discover live animals, get hands-on in the touch tank, and see Luna, the loggerhead sea turtle, in the 5,000-gallon aquarium.
The von Arx Wildlife Hospital treats more than 3,200 injured, sick and orphaned native animals each year. Discover threats facing our animals and injury prevention tips. the perfect party. This makes
planning and hosting a birth-
day party stressful. Despite
your best efforts, if you have
a young or sensitive child, it
is possible that your child or
a guest may end up in tears at
the exciting, stimulating event
in which you have invested
considerable time and money.
Prevent your party from becoming a tear fest. Follow these nine easy steps to keep the enjoyment level elevated for all attendees, you included.
1. When setting your guest list follow the classic rule of your child’s age plus one for the number of invitations. Not
many three year olds can handle the thrill of a huge party. How does your child do with other large, family events such as Thanksgiving? Use any lessons you have learned from other celebrations to help you develop this party.
2. Schedule the festivities when your child is at their natural peak. If they still nap do not schedule the party at the
time of day when they are usually sleepy. If your child is an early bird, plan a morning event. If your tween or teen is lobbying for a sleepover party but you know from experience that they turn into a nightmare without enough sleep,
steer them in another direction.
3. Look at a variety of options for the party location. For some children a party held at home will reduce the po-
tential for emotional overload. However, this is not always the case. Shandy Tilley’s daughter had meltdowns at a few home parties before her mom recognized that she was stirred up even by the preparations. “Having them offsite allowed us to have a real start and finish time and two hours was plenty. It made the transition easier for Tatiana if everyone came to the party at the same time and left at the same time.”
4. Think about the timing of gift open-ing. Who says the gifts must be opened at the end of the party? My son pushed
back at this concept one year and we let him open the gifts as guests arrived. This freed him to enjoy the planned activities instead of coming over every two minutes to ask when

we were opening all those glorious presents. Anne Marie Healey used the same tactic when her two children were young. “ It also allowed the giver to have some one-on-one attention on their gift.”
5. Gift giving can be a source of po-tential anxiety for the guests as well. Children are usually excited about
showing off the present they brought and wrangle to have theirs opened first. When Healey worked at a preschool that hosted par-ties they managed this process by giving each child a square with a number on it. The child sits until their number is drawn randomly and then they offer their gift to the guest of honor.
6. Manage your child’s expectations about presents to prevent an embar-rassing or hurtful response to an
unwanted gift. To avoid a random “I hate it” or “I already have that”, you can role-play before the party. Rehearse several times by putting silly things, such as a can of peas, in a box. Have the child open it and teach them to respond with the requisite thank you.
7. Think about the games or activities you are offering. Even simple, seem-ingly age appropriate activities can
backfire if they are not suited to your child. Tilley suggests, “Don’t play competitive games.
Who knew musical chairs could be so trauma provoking?”
8. Be organized with the games or activities so that the guests are too busy to misbehave. “I always have
extra activities planned in case things go faster than expected,” says Tanya Bonham, mom of two and owner of Parties to Go.
9. Don’t give in to peer pressure. If you feel pressure to keep up with the par-ties being coordinated by your mom
friends take Tilley’s advice, “Don’t worry about
competing with the supermoms. Invite them to help.” As your guest list grows along with your child and parents no longer stay at the party, recruit extra hands.
Most importantly, tailor the party to your
child’s personality and temperament. If tears occur, take heart and remember that it will be funny several years down the road.

Family FunWhat happened to the days when
kids played outside until din-nertime? In today’s world,
children spend an unprec-edented amount of time in structured activities and in front of a screen. This summer why not get your kids outside and engaged in the outdoors by throwing a garden
party. Grab your family, friends, and neighbors and plan for a day of fun in your own backyard. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Get Your Hands DirtyLet your guests start their own seedlings. Provide them with plastic cups with holes poked in the bottom or small terra cotta pots, potting soil and a variety of seeds to plant. Ask everyone to pitch in a bit and help get your garden started for the season. Or make it a progressive gardening party and move on to other houses and help with their gardens. Many hands make the work fast and fun. Be sure to have the necessary gardening tools avail-able including a spade, shovel, rake, trowel, and watering can. Provide smaller gardening tools for pint-sized participation. Craft Some Garden FunCreate unique flower pots by decorating the outside with acrylic paint, markers or stickers. Collect or purchase smooth rocks to paint with special words or pictures. Let your guests brings their rocks home to place in their gardens. Buy a garden mosaic kit at a local craft store and create a unique keepsake with kids’ handprints, colorful glass and stones. Put together bird seed packets or wreaths for everyone to bring home to feed the birds in their own yards. Provide materials for older kids to make-their-own birdhouses. Or provide a few plain ones already made and ready for decoration. Get some pipe cleaners and color-ful tissue paper to make paper flowers.
Picnic in Your BackyardOne of the pleasures of warm weather is eating outside. Serve your guests sandwiches cut into shapes with seasonal cookie cutter designs. Let the kids decorate flower, butterfly, bunny or bird sugar cookies. And of course provide a nice platter of veggies arranged in garden rows with some favorite dipping sauces. Offer worms in the dirt for the daring: small cups of chocolate pudding mixed with crushed Oreos and gummy worms. Go on a HuntSend the kids searching around your backyard for bugs. Provide jars with holes poked in the top as bug catchers. Provide a plastic mag-nifying glass so they can view their catch up close before releasing back into nature. A few days ahead, make craft butterflies to clip onto branches and leaves in your yard. Give the kids butterfly nets for a pretend butterfly hunt. Help OthersVolunteer as a group to help an elderly neigh-bor with their yard cleanup or to work in their garden. Help a local organization with outdoor clean up around your community. Whether it’s picking up trash in a park or planting flowers in the parkway, it will add beauty to your local surroundings. In the spirit of May Day, secretly hang a basket of flowers on the door knob of a
neighbor’s house. But don’t let them catch you! Write It DownProvide plain notebooks for everyone to decorate and take home as their own garden journals. It’s a good way to keep track of what’s been planted and how everything is growing. You can list your favorite plants and write down anything new you discover. You can also note new ideas for next year’s garden. Celebrate Your BountyBuy and plant a birthday tree for each of your kids. On their birthdays, chart the growth of each child along with that of “their” tree. Consider planting an apple or other fruit tree and enjoy its harvest each year. Plant seeds your kids will enjoy tending, picking and maybe even eating like carrots, corn, tomatoes, pumpkins and sunflowers.

this season. Once your planting is done, en-courage your kids to tend their garden every day. They’ll watch their plants grow and enjoy outdoor beauty they helped create.

dipping graham crackers in chocolate and then sprinkling with mini marshmallows.
A fun activity would be to make do it yourself trail mix. All you need to do is have the fixings available–dried fruits, nuts, small chocolate chips–and let the kids create their own favorite mixture. Supply each with a small paper bag so the children don’t get carried away. Once it’s filled with mix, they are done.
For activities, you can sing songs around the campfire, tell stories, and do camp-related crafts like decorating plain, inexpensive back-packs that the kids can take home as their favor.
2. Movie Night. A movie night might not sound like a creative new idea but when you pair it with a popcorn bar, it’s loads of fun.
The popcorn bar is easy: just fill a large, new metal tub with freshly popped corn. Fill 4-6 smaller metal buckets with popcorn mix-ings like M&M’s, mini pretzels, small gummy candies, and other small toppings. Have paper bags ready for each child to make their own popcorn mix. Pair the popcorn with bottled water, lemonade, or juice boxes.
Cover the floor with as many cozy blan-kets and pillows as you can find and let the kids get comfortable.
After the movie, do a craft that follows along the movie theme and send the kids home happy.
3. Tea Party. Do you have a child who loves dress up? If so, a tea party could be a fun theme.
Provide a variety of dress up clothing and jewelry for the guests to choose from. Or offer a variety of ridiculous hats for each child to choose from. You can pick them up at resale

If your child has a summer birthday you can opt for a beach party or other water-centered celebration to keep kids cool.
Or, you can head indoors for your party fun. For all of our party ideas, you can find
plenty of inspiration on Pinterest. You’ll also find party invitations, printable signs and fa-vors, themed games and much more at Etsy.com. And, don’t forget to check amazon.com for inexpensive favors and decorations.
Here are four party themes that will get your creative juices flowing:
1. Indoor Camping. An indoor camping party works best as a sleepover. Request that the kids bring sleeping bags. Decorate ahead of time with white holiday lights strung along the ceiling to create a star filled sky. Get crafty by creating a pretend campfire (Google “pretend campfire” for tons of good ideas on how to make one) and then place pillows or beach-chairs around it for storytime and/or movie watching. If you have a tent and a big enough space, you can set that up for sleeping. Or, if you’re REALLY crafty, you can make simple one-man tents for each child out of stakes and sheets or painting drop cloths. Again, Google is your friend for instructions. A recording of nature sounds will set the mood.
As the kids arrive, give each a flashlight with their name decoratively written on it with a Sharpie (flashlights are cheap at The Dollar Store). The kids will love using them later during storytime or after lights out.
Keep the food simple with hots dogs, beans, and easy to make s’more cupcakes. Another dessert idea is to make faux s’mores by

shops for $1 or less per hat. While you’re re-sale shopping, choose a tea and saucer for each
child. Once they finish using it for the party, they can take home their own special tea cup.
If possible, use a long child-size table set with a beautiful tablecloth and a pretty center-
piece. Place cards are a must! Serve food on tiered stands that you can make
yourself with some dollar store items.For refreshments, make small
tea sandwiches with peanut butter and jelly, egg salad, tuna salad, and ham and cheese. Do the same with
dessert–offering small portions of brownies or cookies. Instead of tea, put
juice or cider in the tea cups.A fun activity would be to
decorate sugar cookies. Let each child decorate a cookie or two and then package in a clear plastic bag
for them to take home along with their tea cup.
4. Art Party. An art party is perfect for children 10 or older and works for parties small and large.
The trick is to pick a project that is chal-lenging enough to keep the children’s interest but not so difficult that they get frustrated.You also want a project that will result in a take home piece of art. Some projects to consider (details and links for projects are at neafamily.com):• Painted Tile Coasters. All you need to
create gorgeous tile coasters is a hand-ful of glazed white tiles (20 cents each at Lowe’s), a bottle of rubbing alcohol, 4-6 bottles of alcohol ink (available at Jo-Ann’s & Michael’s), cotton swabs, a paint brush, and a few straws. To cre-ate the tiles, you simply paint a layer of alcohol over the tile and then dribble the ink on the tile. You use the straw to blow the color around or you can rotate by hand. As the colors roll through the
alcohol, you get dramatic starbursts and little rivets of color. The colors overlap and create the design for you. If you dis-like the creation, just use paper towels with alcohol to wipe it off and start over. Once the tiles dry completely, spray with a clear setting spray. Attach small adhesive circles on the four corners of the bottom to keep the tile from scratching the table.
• Tissue Paper Canvas. Supplies include various colors of tissue paper, safety scis-sors for each child, water, foam brushes, and a canvas for each child. Children cut out various sizes of tissue paper shapes and lay them randomly on a canvas that has been dampened with water. They can overlap the shapes being as creative with colors as they’d like. Adding more water on top of the shapes lightens the effect somewhat. Let each canvas dry completely and then remove the paper to reveal the masterpiece
• Tissue Paper Candle Holders. You’ll need: tissue paper in your desired colors, Mod Podge matte finish, paintbrush, scissors, glass votive holders, and paper punches in various shapes. Help the kids punch out shapes or you can have them ready to save time. The children can brush on a bit of Mod Podge to the side of the glass and lay the shapes on top, working on a small area at a time. Overlapping colors and shapes is fine. Once the glass is cov-ered, paint a layer of Mod Podge over the entire surface and let dry. Place a battery operated tea light in each container and your party guests have a lovely reminder of the party.
Offer a variety of rainbow or brightly colored
refreshments and your art party will be a success.
Whatever kind of indoor party you choose, you can get creative and have a party to remember!
