Mental health is a community issue.Fortunately, there’s a community solution.

Her Mind is Our Concern.

Chloe is an outgoing 16-year-old who loves animals, art and being the center of attention. She also struggles with a seizure disorder and has difficulty learning, making friends, sitting still, controlling her mood and understanding boundaries. Her mother exhausted every possible medical solution and had little hope when she came to DLC for help. Over the next year, their entire family participated in the Community Action Team’s holistic treatment process and experienced profound healing. Chloe shares, “DLC has made a big difference in my life. They helped me set goals, taught us how to manage my emotions and found medication that helps control my anger.” Their feelings of desperation have been replaced with compassion, patience and optimism and the transformation is inspiring.

Chloe is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in ten of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community. A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

THIS MONTH:

Happy Holidays!

As I write this I can look out my office window to watch my neighbor hang-ing lights on his house. Yes, it’s mid-November but after all, this is Naples and decorating for the holidays seems to be a very fine art. I’m nowhere near that organized, it will take me until the second week of December just to find my lights in the attic and get the strands untwisted. Eventually they will go up and while the grandeur won’t match my neighbor’s coordinated light show, it works for me. To me, that’s the holiday secret: find out what works for you and makes your family happy and stick with that. My list is short: time with family and friends, a few special gifts, and lots of good food.

Obviously, we’re all about the holidays this month. You can start with our tips on tree safety (page 17), move on to resources that will encourage your family to give back to soldiers far from home (page 18), right on to Christmas traditions around the world (page 42).

We also have articles on where to view lights in Naples, excellent sugges-tions for teacher gifts (no more bath products, please!), and how you can gift your children with experiences. Plus, we have dozens of holiday events in our calendar on pages 26-37.

May your family have the happiest of holidays!

REEL LIFE WITH JANE By Jane Louise Boursaw

Family Movie & DVD Reviews New movies this month include a brand new “Star Wars” installment, a Chipmunks road trip, and a “whale of a story,” directed

by Ron Howard. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and Blu-ray this month. Note that release dates are subject to change.

KRAMPUS

PG-13 for sequences of horror violence/ terror, language and some drug material

In Theaters 12/4 • Ok for Kids 14+ Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels

Like a little “scary” with your yuletide fes-tivities? Then “Krampus” is for you. When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christ-mas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All heck breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to stick together to survive. Directed by Michael Dougherty, this thriller also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette and Con-chata Ferrell.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

PG-13 for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material • In Theaters 12/11 (2D/IMAX)

Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by a whale of mammoth size and will, with an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster inspired Herman Mel-ville’s “Moby-Dick,” but that was only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their lim-its and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Directed by Ron Howard, this movie stars Chris Hemsworth as the ship’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30

years later helped bring the story to light.

THE LADY IN THE VAN

PG-13 for a brief unsettling image In Theaters 12/11 • Ok for Kids 13+

Reel Preview: 4 of 5 ReelsNicholas Hytner directs Alan Bennett’s adaptation of his critically-acclaimed West End hit, based on his own bestselling memoir. The real-life story centers on Miss Shepherd (Dame Maggie Smith, reprising her stage role), an eccentric woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parks her broken down van in Bennett’s London driveway ... and proceeds to live there for the next 15 years. Also stars Alex Jennings as Bennett, as well as Dominic Cooper, James Corden and Jim Broadbent.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII THE FORCE AWAKENS

Not yet rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 12/18 (2D, 3D)

Ok for Kids 12+ • Reel Preview: 5 of 5 ReelsGet ready for more thrills from a galaxy

far, far away! This installment in the popular “Star Wars” franchise takes place 30 years after the Rebel Alliance’s victory over the second Death Star (“Return of the Jedi”). The galaxy is still at war, and a New Republic has arisen, but the First Order has sprung from the ashes of the Galactic Empire. Many of the heroes we all know and love - Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chew-bacca (Peter Mayhew), R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) - are still active and fighting in the Resis-tance against this group. They’re joined in the fight by new heroes, including Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), a starfighter pilot; Finn (John Boyega), a former First Order Stormtrooper who uses the lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin Skywalker and later Luke Skywalker; Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger; and a rolling droid known as BB-8. They’re opposed by powerful new forces, including Captain Phasma (Gwen-doline Christie) of the First Order and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), a mysterious dark side user wielding a red lightsaber of unusual design. Directed by J.J. Abrams, this movie is written by Abrams, Michael Arndt and Lawrence Kasdan based on characters by George Lucas.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP

PG for some mild rude humor In Theaters 12/18 • Ok for Kids 6+

Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 ReelsThrough a series of misunderstandings, Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (Mat-thew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) come to believe that Dave (Jason Lee) is going to propose to his new girlfriend in Miami -- and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave, but possibly from gain-ing a terrible stepbrother. Directed by Walt

CONCUSSION

PG-13 for thematic material, including some disturbing images, and language

In Theaters 12/25 • Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels • Concussion

The film is based on the David vs. Goliath story of Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith), the forensic neuropathologist who discov-ered the first football-related brain trauma in a pro player and fought to bring aware-ness to the public. In his search for the truth behind the devastating malady, Omalu’s quest humanizes the price paid by profes-sional athletes in impact sports, but also by people who challenge the status quo as it exposes the political, cultural and corporate interests that fuel the business of sports. Directed by Peter Landesman, this movie also stars Alec Baldwin, Luke Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, David Morse and Albert Brooks.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS By Katie Tanner, Communications Specialist for CCPS

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Kik, Whisper, Tumblr, Snapchat, and Oo-

voo – these names may read like a foreign language to some parents, but not to your kids. “You really need to know what these apps do and the way these apps work,” explains Sgt. Wade Williams of the Collier County Sheriff ’s Office Special Crimes Bureau.

Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) recently held an eye-opening virtual town hall meeting on the safety of social media. Our panel of experts were really only able to scratch the surface on this important topic. That is because there is so much for parents to be aware of when it comes to their child’s use of technology. Do not let that fact over-whelm you as a parent. Instead, I encourage you to take action and get informed. Know what your kid is doing on the internet and on social media.

A Phone is a PrivilegeOne of the biggest messages delivered by our experts was to set the tone with your

child when it comes to technology. “A phone is a privilege, not a right. Set that up from the beginning,” says Sgt. Williams. “They are not going to be that upset or offended when you grab and spot check their phone and when you put parental monitoring apps on there.” Sgt. Williams tells me there are both free and paid paren-tal monitoring apps available with a wide variety of features. They can do everything from monitor the content of your child’s texts to sending alerts when your child adds a new contact. In addition to phone checks and monitoring apps, our experts suggest you avoid letting your child use any apps or programs that let them post anonymously. “If anything uses anonymity or location based services, my first question to you would be why? Why would you want that in the hands of your child?” explains Greg Turchetta, Executive Director of Commu-nications and Community Engagement for CCPS. These types of apps can easily put your child’s safety at risk. The bottom line is that parents need to check out the

privacy settings on the devices their child uses. More importantly, parents should review every app their child uses.

Think Before You Post“One of the critical lessons that we are try-ing to teach kids at a very young age is to think before they post,” says Russell Sabella, Professor of Counseling in the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University. Kids these days have grown up with devices in their hands almost their whole life. They are all about connection, but they struggle with the concept of privacy. Our experts believe it is crucial to make sure your child understands that when you post something online, it should be something you are okay with everyone seeing. If it is something you don’t want your grandmother to see, then don’t post it. “Social media is you, and what you are putting out there. It’s your integrity, it’s your trust, it’s your reputation,” explains Batya Maman, Founder and CEO of So-cial Connect, LLC. Social media is a very powerful tool, but you have to use it wisely.

Get InformedAs I mentioned before, there is so much parents need to know about their child’s use of social media. These tips are just a few of the big takeaways shared by our experts. You can find more information and resources by visiting www.collierschools.com and clicking on “Town Hall Resources.” Get informed and pay attention to what your kids are doing online.

NEW MOM’S CORNER By Anna Futrell

To all my fellow new moms out there -- I have yet another task to add to your list. Yes, one more thing! Read

out loud to your baby every single day. Even the very tiniest babies (and yes, even babies still in utero) can benefit intellectually and emotionally from daily reading aloud. If you already are in the habit of reading a few books out loud to your baby, well done! But, if you’re like me, a new mom in every sense, you had no idea just how important reading out loud to a baby from day one really is.

Julie Gerber, longtime Naples resident and new mom, is a literacy development expert. Julie holds a master’s degree in Reading, Writing, and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Wheaton College. She’s spent over a dozen years as an educator, both as a classroom teacher and reading specialist. As if those credentials weren’t impressive enough, Julie has studied and worked with the Reading and Writing

Project at Columbia University and several literacy experts affiliated with that project at Columbia.

Julie recently sat down with me and explained the importance of reading aloud every day to my own baby.

ANNA: What are some things new parents can do to support their infant’s literacy devel-opment? How do these steps set the stage for future success?JULIE: From the beginning, parents can read and sing to their babies, make up chants, and recite nursery rhymes and the like. These simple things are crucial to helping your child build vocabulary, which is a primary indicator of academic success and future success in general. As crazy as it might seem, the number of words with which a child enters kindergarten predicts their reading success and achievement in general. When we read to our children, we’re exposing them to words--the words

that will help them grow their understand-ing of the world and inspire them to learn and discover. The more we repeat these words in well-known songs, books, and rhymes, the more these words become familiar to our little ones.

For example, and very practically, rhyming is an essential phonemic awareness skill that helps pave the way for your child to become a reader. The more we rhyme with our children, the more their brains are ready to anticipate rhymes. Rhyming teaches children that they can predict the word that is coming next--something they will eventually be able to do with non-rhyming words.

The evidence that reading to your child daily is a primary component of aca-demic and future success is so undeniable that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently refined its recommendations to urge pediatricians to not only encourage parents in feeding and sleeping routines for

The Importance of Reading to Your Baby

their babies, but also in their daily reading routines as well.

ANNA: Why should I care about literacy development at this stage of my baby’s life? School seems so far away. Julie: As parents, we might think we send our children to school to learn to read or to be academically successful. However, it’s the foundation with which they walk into school that effectively determines how they will do. It’s what we do with our children from birth to age four that gives them the vocabulary, the interest, and the love of learning that will pave their way.

It’s easier to develop habits when your child is a baby. There are things that my husband and I do with our son now that are helping us develop a tradition and rou-tine, so we’re not scrambling to establish it when it’s difficult or too late. Our children are sponges. They’re absorbing so much of what’s going on around them. When we fill that with early literacy activities (singing, reading, rhyming, chanting), we’re helping them create a foundation for everything else in their lives.

As you develop good habits related to literacy, consider the importance of regular visits to the library with your baby, along with taking your baby to literacy-based ac-tivities, such as local story times. These life-style routines help create a family culture of literacy and a love of reading and learning, all of which set the stage for future success.

ANNA: What if my baby seems like she isn’t paying attention?JULIE: Whether or not it seems like she’s paying attention, keep at it! Especially when they’re in their earliest stages, your voice is one of the primary ways that your child knows you. Her eyesight is still developing, but she knows your touch, and your voice

is something she’s been listening to since she was in the womb. Reading, chanting, and singing are all ways to help your child hone her listening skills.

Now, when your baby gets older, you have to be a little more flexible. If my son wants to play with blocks instead of listen to a book, I need to roll with that. I don’t want to make reading tedious. I have to choose my reading times wisely--right before or after a nap, when he’s looking to cuddle, etc. I want to find the books he’s interested in, not just the ones I like. My goal is for him to love and look forward to reading, not to cram books and words down his throat!

ANNA: Do you have a suggestion for a book I can read on ways to support my child’s literacy development?JULIE: The first book that comes to mind is Reading Magic by Mem Fox. Mem is a beloved children’s author, a professor, and a mother. She understands the importance of reading to children on every level. It’s such a perfect resource that I have a hard time suggesting anything else.

ANNA: What are some suggestions for books I can read to my infant?JULIE: Books with repetition, predictable patterns, rhymes, eye-catching illustra-tions, and/or a sing-song pattern are all good. In our house, Dear Zoo, The Early Bird, I Went Walking, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Baby Beluga, and Down by the Bay are all well-loved.

I hope you found Julie’s suggestions as helpful as I did. Making literacy develop-ment and reading aloud an integral part of your family’s unique culture sets the stage for future academic success. Your children will be forever grateful for your commit-ment and consistency!

Local StorytimesThere are so many great resources for lit-eracy development right here in Naples. Story times are held throughout the week at various locations throughout Naples.

• Collier County Public Library: CCPL has numerous story times throughout the week at their locations throughout the greater Naples area. Some of these programs require that you pre-register; others are walk-in activity times. Check their website for more information: www.collierlibrary.org/programs/. A few of the walk-in activity and story times for moms with babies are as follows:

• Headquarters Library: Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 AM

• East Naples Library: Thursdays at 10:30 AM (18 months – 5 years)

During the holidays, tree related fires can turn holiday cheer into holiday fear. Each year, fire de-

partments respond to over 200 Christmas tree related home fires. On average, one of every 40 reported home fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home fires. Additionally, trees can fall over onto children and cause injury. There are many things that you can do to mitigate your risk. Follow these steps to ensure safety during this holiday season. PICK THE RIGHT TREE Choosing the right tree can help you avoid many of the most common problems that contribute to Christmas tree fires.

If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled by the manufacturer as fire retardant. These trees are made of flame resistant materials that will be less likely to start or contribute to a fire.

If you prefer to purchase a fresh tree, choose one with fresh, green needles that are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers do not break. Do not buy a dry or dying Christmas tree. No

matter how appealing the idea of a “Charlie Brown” tree may be, if the tree is brown or dropping a lot of needles, it is not safe to keep in your home. The trunk butt of a fresh tree will be sticky with resin, and, when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

PLACE THE TREE CAREFULLY Once you have selected your tree and bring it home, find the right place for it to sit.

Place your tree securely in a tree stand that is designed to reduce tipping. Make sure your tree stands upright securely. If it shakes at all, fasten the base of the tree more firmly into the stand so that it does not fall over. Before placing a fresh tree in the stand, cut 1-2" from the base of the trunk and add an ample supply of water. Be sure to add water daily to fresh trees.

The tree should be placed at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights and should not block any exits. Trees themselves do not often cause fires. Surrounding debris such as newspapers and magazines, boxes or bags and curtains and drapes are much more likely to catch fire.

HOLIDAYS By Beth N. Davis

DECORATE RESPONSIBLYUse lights that have the label of an indepen-dent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Make certain you are using the right lights for your application.

Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords and do not connect more than three strands of lights to one extension cord. Always turn off tree lights before leav-ing home or going to bed. DISPOSE OF YOUR TREE PROMPTLY After Christmas, a well-watered tree may survive 6 to 8 weeks, after which it will rapidly dry out. Be sure to dispose of your fresh tree as soon as needles begin to drop. Artificial trees should be inspected for any needed repairs before they are stored away for the year.

Christmas trees are a wonderful addi-tion to the holiday season and by caring for them properly you can avoid the dangers that they may pose.

BETH N. DAVIS writes from Silver Spring, MD where she and her husband are raising their four children.

Parents who want to create a magical Christmas for their kids often make it

more complicated than it has to be. Christ-mas isn’t about perfect Pinterest reindeer cookies or beautifully wrapped presents. It isn’t about crowded holiday calendars or running from store to store with wish lists and maxed-out credit cards in hand. Christmas is about traditions, creating spe-cial memories, the joy of giving, and faith. What if, by simplifying, you were able to re-discover a more meaningful holiday season?

Here are four ways to help you and your family find simple joy this Christmas.

Set limits on presents. Growing up, Amy Gilmore and her brother competed to see who would get the most Christmas presents each year. Now a mom of two, Gilmore uses a simple gift-giving rule at her house: each child gets “something you want, something you need, something to wear, and some-thing to read.” By limiting the presents under the tree, Gilmore hopes that her kids will appreciate the thought behind each gift. “I want my children to grow up grateful for every single thing they have,” she says.

Give experiences instead of toys. Instead

of buying the latest must-have toys that your kids will forget about in a week, why not give experiences that will build memo-ries instead? Give your child the karate lessons he’s been wanting. Buy the family a board game that everyone can enjoy all year long. These types of gifts keep on giving long after the chaos of Christmas morning.

Find ways to serve others. Every Christ-mas Eve, Jenna Bunner, mom of three, and her husband take their children to participate in a community-wide holiday event for families in need. With live music playing, everyone shares in a meal, and guests have the option of taking family pictures, getting haircuts, and shopping for clothes and Christmas gifts in a free store. You may not have the time or resources to participate in a big event, but you can still teach your children about the joy of sharing with others. Give your child some money to put in the Salvation Army bell-ringer’s bucket on your way into the grocery store. Go shopping together for a local winter coat drive. Make a batch of Christmas cookies and deliver them to your local fire or police department to thank them for their service.

Say “no” to busy-ness and “yes” to mak-

ing simple memories. Between your neighbor’s cookie exchange, your friend’s Ugly Christmas Sweater party, and all of the Santa photo ops around town, it’s easy to feel pressure to fit in too many holiday activities. Parenting instructor and speaker Marianne Miller recommends deciding ahead of time how many holiday events you will attend. Then, you can decline other invitations. Read Christmas books to your kids in front of the fire. Light a candle in your Advent wreath or decorate cookies for Santa. Pour hot chocolate into thermoses, put on your pajamas, and drive around looking at lights. Years down the road, these memories are what your chil-dren will remember.

If you find yourself stressing over your next Elf on a Shelf scenario or keeping up with your neighbor’s light display, try a less-is-more approach. “So many parents feel a weight to create a magical Christmas for their kids,” Miller says. “What they don’t re-alize is what makes the season memorable is its beautiful simplicity.” May you and your family discover a simpler, more meaningful Christmas this year.

RACHEL RECOMMENDS Book Reviews

Because I know so many kids who love books as much as I do, I wanted to give them a chance to write about a book they like. I will be back next month—Rachel.

VIVIENNE HUNTER is a fourth-grade student at Lake Park Elementary. She loves school, her friends, Girl Scouts, and Irish dancing. She has three younger siblings, a dog, and a cat. When she grows up, she wants to travel the world, be a chef, and be an author. She was born in Chicago and has lived in Naples for five years.

Review of Freaky Fast Frankie Joe

Freaky Fast Frankie Joe is a book by Lutricia Clufton. Frankie Joe Huckaby’s mom is freaky cool, but when making a bad deal

with someone, she gets sent to jail! Frankie Joe gets sent to live with his dad he’s never met, a stepmom he didn’t even know he had, and four half-brothers. But Frankie Joe has a plan. He’ll ride 1,400 miles back to Laredo, Texas, on his bike.

Freaky Fast Frankie Joe takes place in Clearview, Illinois. The main characters are Frankie Joe; his father, FJ; his stepmother, Lizzie; and his four half-brothers, Luke, Matt, Mark, and Little Johnny. I like these characters because they give him challenges to overcome to feel like he fits in to the family and into his new hometown. I don’t like the character Rick because his bad influence made Frankie Joe’s mom, Martha Jane, go to jail. The characters are very believable. Matt and Frankie Joe have lots of fights, just like real-life brothers, and Lizzie makes yummy dinners every night, just like my mom does.

My favorite part is when Frankie Joe said he was going home to his real family because he’s going home to the family who takes care of him. I also really liked how there is a dictionary in this book that Frankie Joe uses to look up words when he hears a word that is new to him, such as “responsibility” and “home.” His father, FJ, makes him remember what responsibility is by making him read the definition of the word every day and write a report every week about what responsible things he has done. He looks up the word “home” when he is missing Laredo, Texas.

My least favorite part is at the beginning where people in Laredo stare at him because the story of his mom being in jail was in the newspaper. I also like how the author’s writing style is about Frankie Joe. She writes in the first person narrative, so Frankie Joe tells his own story and tells us exactly what he thinks and feels. The story is also adventurous and fun because Frankie Joe has many adventures throughout Clearview when he creates his own business called “Frankie Joe’s Freaky Fast Delivery Service.” This book is good for kids ages seven and up.

If you have suggestions for books for Rachel to review, e-mail your suggestions to: [email protected].

EVENTS AND NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE THE LIGHTING DISPLAYS

ARE THE STAR OF THE SHOW.

We won’t have snow to get us into a holiday mood but Naples is no stranger to awesome holiday

lighting displays! There are several neighborhoods that are perfect for a slow drive. You’ll also find beautiful displays at a few of our shopping areas.

Make a thermos of hot chocolate, grab a handful of candy canes, buckle in the kids and head off for an enchanted evening of holiday fun!

NEIGHBORHOODS

Palm River. Located off of Immokalee Road between Airport and Goodlette, Palm River is usually nicely lit with a few houses that go all out.

Pelican Bay. Many of the ungated neighborhoods of Pelican Bay are brightly decorated for Christmas. Enter at Pelican Bay Blvd. and meander around. The association decorations are especially pretty and make really good photo backdrops.

Port Royal. This very upscale neighborhood off Gordon Drive in south Naples offers brightly lit, beautifully decorated large homes and mansions.

Victoria Park. Located in North Naples off Airport Road (about 1 mile south of Immokalee), Victoria Park has some of the most over-the-top holiday lights displays. The biggest displays are usually on a the side streets. You’ll also find that many of the streets have matching decorations (arches, tree, candy canes) lighting the way. Victoria Park has a luminaria display on Christmas Eve that attracts thousands. Be prepared for a VERY slow drive and huge crowds.

Willoughby Acres. Another North Naples neighborhood, Willoughby Acres is located off Immokalee just north of Palm River. In previous years almost all houses have been lit.

Must-Have Gifts:• Gift cards for local and chain restaurants

because a teacher has to eat!• Gift cards for office supply stores. It

would be great if teachers used gift cards to buy themselves something special but the reality is that they already spend a chunk of their own money on supplies for their classroom. A gift card to Office Max or Staples means they will spend a few dollars less of their own money on paper, pencils, and notebooks.

• Gift cards for general places like Target or Wal-Mart where they can get things for themselves or for the classroom.

• Homemade gifts from the kids like cards and pictures because those are extra special.

• Notes of appreciation that come from the heart. “I have kept every drawing or art project a kid has ever gifted me from teaching preschool back in the day,” says teacher Courtney Ludwig-Shay.

• Chocolate and coffee products. Con-sider putting together a basket of special chocolate bars, hot chocolates, fancy coffees and creamers and other treats.

• Pampering sets to do at-home facials, spa products like those carried by the direct sales company Perfectly Posh. Posh has

unique gifts like roll-up sticks for the skin that help with things like headaches and fatigue, perfect for the classroom!

• A catered lunch. Give your favorite teacher an IOU and the menu from a local restaurant. Have her make her selection and choose the day for her special lunch. Deliver the lunch with a fresh flower in a vase.

• A pooled gift from several parents. Chat with parents in the car pick up line and see if a few other parents want to pool their money to buy one larger gift card or gift. Or, if you have the class list and can email everyone, see if everyone

Holiday Gifts Teachers REALLY Want!

You want to show appreciation for your child’s teacher but are most likely short on time and

maybe even on money. I polled teachers across the country to find out what gifts they are loving

this year and which ones they would happily take a pass on. The answers might surprise you.

wants to go in on one large gift card. Even a $10 donation per family will add up to an awesome gift card.

Get to know them“Our school’s room parent coordinator (which was me for a while) has teachers fill out a questionnaire telling us their favorite food, restaurants, stores, colors, drinks, scents, classroom needs, etc. every year,” says Melinda Cerra, mother of four. “My daughter Lily’s 4th grade teacher was a total health nut and didn’t like most of the stuff that lots of the other teachers liked. I liked buying for her.”

According to Nicole Schmuecker Ho-sier, “My mom’s in a remote area and so the gift cards she can use online are a good thing too. She loves Gilmore Girls and someone got her a Luke’s Diner coffee mug!”

Stephen Schmidt, a longtime middle school teacher, says, “Gift cards get used. I have over 1,000 ties and almost as many coffee cups. Coffee, whiteboard markers, sharpies, Grateful Dead memorabilia are all on my short list.”

Sarah Ross, an 8th grade Language Arts teacher, says, “I love getting hand-written notes/cards from students! I put them in a special place and re-read them

days, months, and years later. You cannot do that with a gift card! I truly appreciate any gifts from my students (they warm my heart!), but I have to say I do not want food or candy.”

Gifts to skip• Anything homemade. It may be easy

for you to whip up a batch of cookies or give your famous banana bread, but the teacher may be watching his or her sugar, gluten, calories or worse … might be allergic!

• Lotions … everyone is different and it’s very hard to pick out a scent that every teacher will love. Some hate fruit or food scents while others love them. Some are bothered by the smells entirely. The bottom line is that most teachers already have a ton and really don’t need more.

• Candles and mugs. Same as with lotions and scents. And a teacher can only burn and store so many candles every year. Where to store so many mugs? And how to rotate and use them all so every kid gift-giver feels special? Erin Ham-mons, preschool teacher, says, “No more candles or mugs. Yes, they are quick and easy to buy but everyone’s tastes are very different. Get to know each teacher

personally if possible. Gift cards aren’t as personal but they are easier and still just as much appreciated. Maybe a little candy, too!”

• Ties. This may seem like a slam dunk for a male teacher but they likely already have quite a few. Delve a little deeper into his personality to find out what else he might like: fishing lures, golf or tennis balls, a special book, maybe an iTunes gift card.

• Anything with an apple on it and ran-dom knick knacks! It seems everyone these days is trying to downsize and declutter, so why add to your teacher’s overflow of stuff?

The bottom line seems to be that it’s

entirely worth it to take some time to get to know your child’s teacher’s likes and dislikes. Then pick a gift with your child accordingly, and you’re sure to give the teacher a happy holiday break and a won-derful school year!

KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN (TheKerrieShow.com) is the homeschool mom of 5 who has many teacher gifts to buy for her kids’ religious ed and co-op teachers this year and will take these suggestions to heart!

Tired of the same old Christmas routine? Take a trip around the world and learn how people from

other cultures and countries celebrate the holidays. Not only is it fun to try something new, but new traditions are a great way to incorporate some learning into your child’s holiday experience. MexicoDuring December in Mexico, farolitos are a common sight along driveways and on the porches of private homes. These lanterns, made of brown paper bags with pretty pat-terns cut into the sides, light up the night. The bags are weighted with sand placed in the bottom, and lit with real candles. Try making a kid-friendly farolito by letting the kids decorate brown or white sack lunch-sized paper bags. Add a couple of scoops of sand or gravel into the bottom of each sack to weight them, and then use a battery-operated tea light in place of a real flame.

Oriental Trading Company at www.ori-entaltradingcompany.com has ready-made farolitos available for purchase. There are several versions, search “Christmas Luminary” for options. PhilippinesDuring the month of December, streets in the Philippines are lit up with brightly colored parols, or paper lanterns. These 3-D star-shaped lights are traditionally made from bamboo sticks and rice paper. The star represents the star of Bethlehem the three wise men followed to find Jesus. Although this might be a tricky project for little hands, you can still celebrate Christmas Filipino-style by hanging decorated paper stars around your home. Simply cut out star shapes from paper or cardboard, punch a hole near the top for hanging, and then let the kids decorate with markers, glitter, paint and crayons.

Oriental Trading Company has a 3-D card-board star that is ready for decorating:www.orientaltrading.com/diy-barn-star-a2-41_2151.fltr?Ntt=star%20craft

GermanyLucky German children celebrate St. Nico-las Day on December sixth. St. Nicolas was known for giving to the poor and is thought to be the origin of Santa Claus, or St. Nick. According to legend, St. Nick will leave treats for young children in their shoes on the night of December 5th. You can start off the holidays by adapting this tradition for your kids. Have the kids leave their shoes on the porch, or outside of their bedroom doors on December fifth. Fill the shoes with treats after the children are asleep.

Kinderschokolade is a yummy chocolate treat that is popular with German children. There are several versions available on amazon.com, search “Kinderschokolade” for options.

FranceA Buche de Noel, or Yule log cake, is a tradi-tional Christmas dessert in France. A Buche de Noel usually is made from a sponge cake baked in a jelly roll pan, filled with chocolate buttercream frosting, and then rolled into a log shape. Bakeries in France strive to create these desserts to resemble actual logs complete with mushrooms and lichen made from fondant. You can bake your own Buche de Noel and decorate it in a forest theme with sprigs of rosemary, red hot candies, and a dusting of powdered sugar for snow.

IrelandIn Ireland, some families leave a candle on a windowsill and leave it burning throughout the night. The candle is a symbol of wel-come, and helps the faithful to remember the story of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay the night before Jesus was born. You can try this fun tradition at home by letting the kids decorate a clear mason jar as a candle holder for Joseph and Mary. Use paint, glitter glue, or glued-on squares of tissue paper in festive colors. Place a battery operated candle or tea light inside and put on a windowsill on Christmas Eve.

You can buy flameless tea lights on Amazon.com. Search for battery+tealight+flameless.

ItalyIn December, Italians enjoy manger scenes, or prescpios, in their homes. You can con-tinue this tradition with your children by including a Nativity scene in your home’s Christmas decor. For younger children, check out durable, kid-friendly nativity sets such as Fisher Price Little People Nativity, Melissa and Doug Nativity, and Play Mobil Nativity, to name a few. You could even hide the baby Jesus and then secretly place him in his manger on Christmas Eve for the kids to find in the morning.

You can find a Little People Nativ-ity set on amazon.com by searching for fisher+price+little+nativity.

Norway A fun Norwegian tradition is to celebrate “little Christmas Eve” on December 23rd. On this night, families gather and do activi-ties such as trimming the tree or decorating gingerbread houses. Often, a traditional rice pudding is served topped with cinnamon, sugar and butter. An almond is hidden in the pudding, and whoever finds the nut will have good luck in the coming year. Other traditions involving the almond are that the finder must sing a song, or they might receive a pig made of marzipan. You could serve rice pudding on little Christmas Eve too, and choose a fun activity for the finder of the almond.

Food.com has a great recipe: www.food.com/recipe/norwegian-rice-pudding-risengryn-grod-169479 DenmarkDanes enjoy a fun family tradition during the holiday season called “cut and paste day.” On this day, the whole family sits down and creates Christmas crafts and decorations. Often these projects include the Danish woven heart basket. These are made of paper strips, usually in red and white which are the colors of the Danish flag. Hold your own cut and paste day with projects tailored to your family’s interests and abilities.

DTLK has a tutorial for woven baskets: www.dltk-holidays.com/valentines/mwoven.htm

Britain England is the birthplace of Christmas Crackers. Traditionally given to diners at Christmas dinner, Christmas Crackers are made of cardboard tubes wrapped in color-ful paper. When the ends are pulled apart, a cracker is activated, making a popping noise. Inside is a small toy or trinket, a paper crown (representing the three kings), and a joke. Christmas Crackers are great fun for kids and adults alike.

You can order your own here: www.am-azon.com/Set-Bows-Berries-Christmas-Crackers/dp/B001HW71PC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1442881166&sr=8-2&keywords=christmas+crackers ChinaNot all Chinese celebrate Christmas, but those who do often decorate their homes with red paper chains, red paper flowers and paper lanterns to symbolize happiness. Christmas trees are becoming popular and are called “trees of light.” You can add a Chinese touch to your Christmas decor by making paper chains of red paper, red tissue paper flowers, or making your home glow with red lanterns.

Oriental Trading Company offers these red lantern chains: www.orientaltrading.

Giving the Gift of to Our Children

HOLIDAYS By Anna Futrell

The holiday season is a time when we focus on giving and being generous amongst those we love most. What a fantastic

focus! However, many of us end up burdened by more things in our homes on December 26. On Christmas morning, how can you reduce the amount of toys you give to your children? And how can you encourage your extended family members to do the same? We have a few ideas for you.

Start by creating a family culture that places value on ex-periences rather than things. This is some-thing you probably already do. We all place a premium on spending time with our children, and in Naples, our envi-ronment lends itself perfectly to getting outside and experiencing new things together. It is relatively easy, then, to pursue adventure on a regular basis together as a family.

Experiences

Page 45: December 2015 Neapolitan Family

NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2015 neafamily.com 45

Here are just a few ideas we hope may inspire you to give the gift of experiences rather than things to your children this holiday season:

1. A Family Trip. Print out an itinerary and pictures, and wrap them up for your

children to open on Christmas morning. Whether it is a weekend getaway to the Flor-ida Keys, a staycation overnight to the Hyatt Coconut Point, or a week-long vacation to the mountains in Georgia, your children can get excited about a trip to someplace new. If you can plan to take the trip relatively soon after Christmas, that is a bonus!

2. Year Passes to a Theme Park. Christ-mas is the perfect time to give the gift

of year-long passes to a theme park or water park. A couple of cost-effective options include Busch Gardens in Tampa and Sea World in Orlando. Other popular options are passes for Disney World or Universal Studios Orlando. Be sure to include a date when you plan to use the passes together for the first time as a family.

3. Florida State Parks Passport and Year Pass. The Florida State Parks

system showcases “The Real Florida.” The parks range the gambit – from beachfront campsites to rustic cabins, historical sites, hiking, boating, tours, and so many other activities across the state. With 160 state parks, your family can enjoy getting its Florida State Parks Passport stamped each time you visit a new park. Plan to spend a couple of days right after Christmas visiting some of our local state parks in Southwest Florida. Options include Lovers Key State Park, Wiggins Pass State Park, Koreshan State Historic Site, and Collier-Seminole

State Park (among others).

4. Classes or Lessons. Has your child been asking to learn a new skill, join

a team sport, or take art or dance lessons? Use Christmas as the opportunity to help them pursue a new activity or improve the skills they already have through additional or intensive lessons. This is a great one to suggest to grandparents! Wrap up a card with the first class date and time, along with the materials or a piece of equipment they might need.

5. Concert or Theater Tickets. If your child has an interest in music, dance or

drama, this is the perfect way to encourage that pursuit. Both the Artis—Naples as well as the Barbara B. Mann Theater in Fort Myers have lots of performances through-out the year, including musical guests and theater options. Is your child interested in any particular performer? There are several venues within driving distance in Tampa and Miami, and many popular artists and performers schedule concerts within a short drive to Naples.

6. Sports Event Tickets. Take your child to a professional sporting event. Pur-

chase the tickets, and wrap them up with a team hat or t-shirt. A great local option is taking your child to an Everblades game (hockey) or a Miracles game (baseball). Both are cost effective, and many dates include special events such as fireworks, special half-time shows, giveaways, or deals that include concessions.

7. Day Trip to the Miami Zoo or the Mu-seum of Science and Industry Tampa.

Take a day to experience these fabulous

attractions, both of which are within a short drive from Naples. Go on a day soon after Christmas, and wrap up the tickets with a stuffed animal or an official looking (homemade) museum pass.

If this topic resonates with you, and you want to shift the focus this Christmas season to experiences over things, start by talking with your children about how this Christmas may feel differently from holi-days past. If you plan to give experiences rather than things, the amount of presents underneath the tree may change, or rather, the shape of the presents may be different. Don’t give up the experience of opening gifts, or of giving presents like books, cloth-ing, or a couple of fun things you know your children will enjoy opening. Rather, shift your focus toward giving your children the gift of time together, while creating lasting memories, and investing in your children’s skills and passions rather than the hottest toys and gadgets this season.
