Three members of the District 21 (California)Grand National Teams champions have a trulyexotic record in this event – Chip Martel, LewStansby and Hugh Ross have won this event seventimes since 1982.

A freak hand that occurred in the final quarteragainst the District 9 (Florida) team caused somewild bidding at one table and produced a simpleresult at the other.

(1) Red two-suiter.(2) Good hand with spades. The Martel-Stansby style is to open 1♣ with a

4-5 minor suiter. Martel’s 1♣ certainly soundedgood to Stansby. Eric Rodwell announced his redtwo-suiter, and Stansby told a little bit about hisspades. But the big surprise was when JeffMeckstroth jumped to 5♦, He was quite sure thathis side had 12 hearts, so he didn’t want to bid thatsuit because he feared that it would spur his oppo-nents to bid more and more spades.

Martel of course doubled, but who can blameStansby for thinking that his hand was not all thatgreat defensively? Stansby ran to 5♠. Now it wastime for Martel to figure out what was going on.Meckstroth had not bid hearts, so it was clear thatStansby had some, probably four. He also had a raftof spades to justify his pull of the double, sochances were that he had only a singleton club. Ifthat were the case, a spade slam looked real good,so Martel bid it.

Rodwell wanted a club lead, so he doubled. Butnow Meckstroth had a problem. He was sure hisside could collect a club trick, but he knew some-thing Rodwell didn’t know – his side was NOTgoing to get a heart trick. So he pulled the double to7♥, which Martel doubled.

7 GNT victories for Martel, Stansby, RossMartel led a spade, so eventually the defense

collected a spade and two diamonds for plus 800.It’s a good thing that Martel didn’t start with topdiamonds and then lead a third for his partner toruff. Trumping in with a void trump suit just does-n’t work.

At the other table North-South stopped in 5♠,making six. Making six? Yes! East’s opening leadwith the ♣K!

That was 3 IMPs to California. If Meckstrothhad passed the double, his side would have gained13 IMPs – but that still would not have beenenough to change the final result – California stillwould have won by 3 IMPs.

The next-to-last deal found Martel in a difficultspade game.

The 3NT bid was a mild slam try. Rodwell ledthe ♦J and Martel called for the ace. He hoped tobe able to pitch his clubs on the hearts, butMeckstroth ruffed the second round of the suit withthe 9 and Martel overruffed with the queen. He ledthe ♦Q to Meckstroth’s king, and back came a lowclub. After a good deal of thought, Martel decidedMeckstroth was underleading his ace, so he wentup with the king. This worked and he led the good♦9, hoping Rodwell would forget to ruff so thatdummy’s clubs could be sluffed. But not surpris-ingly Rodwell ruffed in with the jack as dummydiscarded a club. Rodwell led a club to partner’sace, and Meckstroth led a diamond, ruffed indummy. At last Martel took the spade finesse, andhe chalked up his game when it succeeded.

This District 9 squad wassecond in the Grand NationalTeams, Championship divi-sion: Spike Lay, JeffMeckstroth, Michael Seamon,Russ Ekeblad, Larry Griffeyand Eric Rodwell.

Cohen, Cohen, Gone!By Barry Rigal

We played a knockout match on Saturday thatmight be described as a triumph in declarer playfutility. Twenty-eight deals and only three makingcontracts! In fact even the partscore records werequite dismal– between the two sides we made onethree-level contract and one two-level contract!

So the games that did make were going to beabsolutely critical. On the deal that follows, ouropponents had done the best they could, so we wererather nervous.

At our table Rebecca Gough (one of this tour-nament’s indefatigable organizers) had opened 1♦as North and saved in 5♦. We led a heart to the aceand shifted to a club. Declarer guessed the dia-monds for down one.

Since 4♥ by West figures to make – except onthe impossible low spade lead – we were in somejeopardy with our plus 100. However, at the othertable, where Ralph Cohen was playing with MarvinShapiro, this was their auction:

played low from dummy, forcing the 10 to his king. Hegave up a heart and won the club shift with the ace.Next came the ♠A and the ♠J, pinning West’s 9. Eastcovered of course, so Cohen ruffed, trumped a heartand cashed the ♠8 to pitch his club loser. When the3-0 trump break came to light, Cohen could not mis-guess trumps. Plus 550 and a 12-IMP pickup. That wasenough to see us home in the match.

After Bart Starr showed two key cards withoutthe trump queen in response to Blackwood,Howard Perlman leaped to the heart grand slam.Perlman hasn’t been playing that much lately, buthis play of this deal shows he still knows how tomake a thoughtful decision.

He won the club opening lead, checked thetrumps by leading a heart to the ace, and then gotback to his hand with the ♠A. He led a second heart– and finessed the 10! That was it – 7♥ bid andmade.

Sidney Lazard, North, raised his eyebrowswhen Perlman called for the ♥10. Perlman turnedto him and said, “You didn’t lead a trump.” It’s true, the most common opening lead against a grandslam in a suit is a trump in an attempt to avoid giv-ing anything away with a side suit lead. Lazard did-n’t lead a trump, so Perlman decided Lazard’s rea-son probably was because he held the queen. Heacted successfully on this assumption.

Lazard and his partner, Bart Bramley, congrat-ulated Perlman on his fine decision. However, theyweren’t too happy when they discovered they hadfailed to qualify for the final. If Perlman had playedfor the drop, the extra matchpoints would havebeen more than enough for Lazard and Bramley toqualify.

Zia gets into the story, too. Once he was askedwhat his opening lead would be against a grand slamwhere the bidding pinpointed that the ace and king oftrumps were on his left. He said he would lead awayfrom his queen-third. When everyone looked at himopen-mouthed, he said, “Believe me, there’ll neverplay me for the queen. They’ll play for the drop and I’llget my queen for the setting trick.”

The American Bridge Teachers Association(ABTA) concluded its 46th annual convention atthe Long Beach NABC, and at the awards banquetheld on July 17, announced its annual award win-ners for the following categories:

A grand inference — literally!(1) Splinter.(2) Roman Keycard Blackwood(3) 3 key cards plus a void.

West led the ♠9. Declarer would have no prob-lems if both black suits behave, but the 5–1 spadedivision killed any hope of establishing the suit fora diamond pitch from the closed hand.

Hanby won the ♠A, drew trumps ending indummy and ruffed a spade to discover the bad split. He now had to rely on a diamond finesse to gethome. But which opponent should he play for thejack?

Hanby reasoned that enemy hearts were proba-bly 5–6 or 6–5 (no preempting). Since East wasknown at this point to have five spades and oneclub, that meant his likely pattern was 5–5–2–1 orperhaps 5–6–1–1. West, therefore was much morelikely to have diamond length. Hanby backed hisjudgment by cashing the ♦K and running the ♦10through West. Making seven for plus 2140 was a13-IMP pickup when North–South at the othertable stopped in 6♣.

Four ABTA members were awarded the presti-gious “Master Teacher” status: Richard Braunsteinof West Hempstead NY; Liz Randall of PointJefferson NY; Judi Schulman of Albany NY andPeggy Tatro of San Rafael CA.

Women begin battle for Wagar TrophyThe Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams gets

under way today. At stake is the Wagar Trophy, which honors one of the all-time great players.

Margaret Wagar (1902-1990), inducted into theACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1999, became LifeMaster #37 in 1943, the fifth woman to earn therank. She and Kay Rhodes share one of the mostremarkable achievements in ACBL history — theywon the Women’s Pairs four consecutive years –1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958.

Wagar and Rhodes share another record — oneof frustration. They were second in the Women’sTeams for seven consecutive years, 1952-1958.

Wagar’s impressive record spans three decadesand includes wins in women’s and open competi-tion. Her open wins include the Reisinger in 1941,the Open Pairs (the forerunner of the Blue RibbonPairs) in 1947 and 1948 and the Spingold in 1946and 1948.

Wagar served on the ACBL Board of Directorsfrom 1960 to 1972 and was named ACBL HonoraryMember in 1979. She was non-playing captain ofthe U.S. World Women’s Teams in 1968 and 1972.

with on those long airplane flights? “I played withWally Moon, Jim Gilliam and Don Drysdale. Thatwas back in the days of Drysdale and SandyKoufax. We won the World Series in 1965 when webeat the Minnesota Twins.”

Parker is playing in the 199er games here. Howcome if he was playing bridge back in the Sixties?“I couldn’t stand the smoke, and most bridge play-ers were smokers back in those days. I playedduplicate for about three years, but then I gave it upfor about 30 years. There are new rules about smok-ing now, so I returned to the game about two yearsago. Another reason why I returned – I have moretime these days.”

He says he’s 63, but he looks more like 35. He’sa fierce competitor, but he’s still looking for hisfirst bridge Golden Glove.

(1) Multi: weak two-bid in a major.(2) Not interested in going higher if West’s suit

start when they took the first two tricks in hearts. Attrick three, West shifted to a low club. Zia went upwith dummy’s ♣K, which held, and he followedwith the ♠J, covered by the queen and king.

Had Zia played a second trump, he would havegone down. East could ruff the third round of dia-monds and Zia would be left with two club losers.

Zia had noticed, however, that East had foundit very easy to cover the ♠J. Zia also noted that Eastbid only 2♥. With three or four hearts, East mighthave jumped preemptively. Zia deduced correctlythat East was 4-2 in the majors.

Zia therefore abandoned trumps, playing ondiamonds right away. East ruffed the third round, but Zia overruffed and exited with the ♣Q. Westwon but could not prevent Zia from ruffing thethird round of clubs in dummy.

I have always believed that your attitudetoward your partner is as important as your techni-cal skill at the game. – Rixi Markus, one of the all-time great players.

Before you sit down to discuss what you areplaying, you should start your partnership off on theright note. Half the battle of winning is being agood partner. Always observe the following:

1. Do not give lessons – unless you are beingpaid to do so. According to an evening paper, thereare only five real authorities on bridge in this coun-try. Odd how often one gets one of them as a part-ner. Punch (British magazine).

2. Never say anything to your partner unlessyou would want him to say the same to you. If youare unsure whether your partner would want you tosay something, don’t.

3. Never “result” (criticize your partner for anormal action just because it did not work thistime).

4. Unless your intent is to clear up a misunder-standing, avoid discussing the hand just played. Ifyou cannot resist, be discreet.

5. Remember that you and your partner are onthe same side.

6. Do not forget that your partner wants to winjust as much as you do.

7. If you feel the urge to be nasty, sarcastic, crit-ical or loud – excuse yourself and take a walk.

8. When there is time between hands, do notdiscuss bridge.

9. When you want to consult another playerabout a disaster, ask about your hand, not your part-ner’s.

10. Do not ever criticize or embarrass yourpartner in front of others.

11. Remember that bridge is only a card game.Re-printed, with permission of the author, from

(Texas Hold ‘Em). Jones is a high school math andcomputer teacher.

In third with 404.88 were John Kissinger ofSan Clemente CA and Jon Wright of La Mesa CA.

Bartusek and Jones attribute their success in thefirst final session with “taking all our tricks ondefense.” This deal is a good example of that prin-ciple:

Dlr: South ♠ A 3Vul: E–W ♥ K Q 3

♦ K Q J 9 6 4 2♣ K

♠ Q 10 9 2 ♠ K J 8♥ A J 9 5 ♥ 8 7 4 2♦ 10 ♦ A 8 7♣ A 10 9 7 ♣ 6 5 4

♠ 7 6 5 4♥ 10 6♦ 5 3♣ Q J 8 3 2

West North East SouthBartusek Jones

Pass1♣ 1♦ 1♥ Pass2♥ 3♦ Pass Pass3♥ 4♦ All Pass

Jones led the ♥8 (attitude) and Bartusekducked, the key play. Declarer won the king andplayed the ♣K. Jones played the ♣6 (upside downcount), so Bartusek took the ♣A and exited with atrump. Jones won the trump ace and continued withanother trump. Declarer won and ran the remainingtrumps to produce this four-card ending:

♠ A 3♥ Q 3♦ — ♣ —

♠ Q 9 ♠ K J 8♥ A J ♥ 4♦ — ♦ — ♣ — ♣ —

♠ 7 6♥ — ♦ — ♣ Q J

Declarer now tried the ♠A, on which Bartusek(West) dumped the ♠Q (“to prevent any acci-dents”), and declarer finished down two, givingBartusek an Jones and excellent score.
