On Wednesday afternoon, four players sat around a table in a side room at the convention center. It was Zia Mahmood and Michael Rosenberg opposing Sam Lev and Jacek Pszczola. Someone asked what was going on, and JoAnna Stansby, who was watching, joked, “It’s the repechage to get back into the Vanderbilt.” Indeed, the players at the table were members of two top teams who found themselves on the sidelines in a stage of the event that at one time was a cakewalk for squads with single-digit seed numbers. On Wednesday, No. 1, No. 3, No. 6 and No. 10 were all making other plans or playing practice matches. Larry Cohen, a member of the Richard Schwartz team in the Vanderbilt, said a major factor is the influx of foreign players. In fact, the major events sometimes resemble world championships with players such as Norberto Bocchi, Giorgio Duboin, Lorenzo Lauria (the world’s No. 1-ranked player) and Alfredo Versace, four members of the team that won the World Team Olympiad in Istanbul last year. “It gets harder every year,” Cohen said between sets on Wednesday. He and David Berkowitz had just finished playing against a pair of experts from Turkey. “The field is deeper every year, and there are great teams with seeds as low as 20 and 30.” Interestingly, Cohen and Berkowitz have two Italian teammates, Andrea Buratti and Massimo Lanzarotti. North knows that East hasat most one spade and there is some danger oflosing a club trick on dummy’s fourth diamondafter the ♥A is dislodged. North smartlyovertakes the ♠K and shifts to his own blackking. When in with the ♥A, North cashes the♣Q, the setting trick. Ole.

South also knows that East has but onespade, but South might not make the correctswitch at trick two. Why take a chance? Youknow what needs to be done, so do it.

Do not ask partner to do for you what youcan do for yourself – even if means overtakingpartner’s trick. It only hurts for a little while.

overcall 2♥, opting instead to double and thenjump to 4♥ to show a monster hand. Thingsseldom work out as planned, however. South’sjump to 4♠, the fly in the ointment, is preemptive.Jump raises by responder after a takeout doubleare preemptive. With strong responding hands (11or more high-card points), responder redoublesfirst. Also, a jump to 2NT over a double shows alimit raise in partner’s suit. 2NT in that auction isnot natural. With a normal 2NT response, responder redoubles first.

Further bidding commentary: Once a playerpreempts, he is not supposed to bid on in acompetitive auction unless he wants to make apenalty double, which is rather rare. In so manywords, South should not bid 5♠ when East bids5♥. It’s a bridge no-no for the weak hand tobecome the general. The strong hand has a muchbetter idea of what to do.

Alerts : some specifics Earlier in this series we described the basics

of Alerts. We continue with the specifics ofsome of the more common and missed Alerts.

— First, summarizing from the previousarticle:

— Calls are assumed to be standard inmeaning and when they are not, opponentsmust be warned. The bidder’s partner says,“Alert.” And that is all.

— When you Alert, do not automaticallyfollow with an explanation unless one isrequested.

— When asked, the bidder’s partner mustgive a full explanation of the agreement.

The Alert procedure will not always gosmoothly for you, so here are some guidelinesfor managing when an error has been made.

— Whenever a misleading, incomplete orwrong explanation is given by your partner: (1)If you are declarer or dummy, explain beforethe opening lead is faced. (2) If you aredefending, wait until after the play has beencompleted. Then you must explain.

In either case, the director should be calledprior to the explanation.

Here are some of the more common callsthat must be Alerted and are frequentlyoverlooked:

• All conventional bids (except Stayman,Gerber and Blackwood). This Alert can bringout a string of further Alerts, e.g. using DONT,all bids must be Alerted since each call has aspecial meaning conveying information.Similarly, all bids using Puppet Stayman areAlertable.

• Weak jump shifts. Example: 1♣ - Pass -2♠. A weak jump shift in competition, however,is not an Alert. Example: 1♣ - 1♦ - 2♠.

• Negative doubles over overcalls of 1NTopeners. Example: 1NT - 3♥ - Dbl

• Non-forcing three-level suit response to1NT. Example: 1NT - Pass - 3♦ (invitational).

Most cuebids are not alertable. Thisincludes controls, Western cuebids (looking forstoppers for notrump), Michaels, etc. If acuebid has an unusual or unexpected meaning, however, it is an Alert.

Alerts are not simple. Their purpose is to

level the playing field andminimize any advantageseasoned partnerships withcomplex systems can have overthe rest of us. The Alert systemtries to do that despite makingthe auction more involved.Good players will still prevailbut you have a right to knowwhat they are telling eachother. Cartoon by Jude Goodwin

One man’s bad luck...By Barry Rigal

Not many people know David Berkowitz’smiddle name: it’s chutzpah. You know whatchutzpah is, as in when someone murders theirparents and then throws themselves on the mercyof the court as an orphan.

Anyway, David came out of the second set ofhis third-round Vanderbilt Knockout Teams matchwith a card so good he could hardly carry it. Still,he found a way to complain.

Dlr: East ♠ Q 5Vul: N-S ♥ 9 6 4 3

Against the slam, West led the ♦A, ruffed byBerkowitz with the ♥10. He cashed the ♥A,dropping East’s singleton queen, crossed to the♥9 and ruffed a diamond high, crossed to the ♣Kand ruff dummy’s last diamond high, then crossedto the ♠Q to play the last trump – a dummyreversal plus a squeeze. This was the ending thatwas reached:

♠ ? x x ♠ x x♥ —- ♥ —-♦ —- ♦ K ♣ A J ♣ 10

♠ A K 10♥ —-♦ —-♣ Q

You will notice that West still has five cardswhile everyone else has four. To keep spadesguarded, West must pitch his ♣J. Now a club tothe ace endplays West to lead into the spadetenace. Berkowitz therefore claimed his contract –then discovered that East had held three spades tothe jack all along, so any line of play would havesucceeded.

P.S. Berkowitz gained about 100 IMPs on theset, and was still complaining to anyone whowould listen what an unlucky player he is.

Saving tricksOn this deal from the Vanderbilt Knockout

West started with the ♠K and continued thesuit. Fantoni ruffed and played the ♣J to East’sace. Back came a low heart, and Fantoniconsidered his play for some time before risingwith the ace. He picked up the last trump andexited with a low heart.

West was in and forced to concede a ruff-sluff,on which Fantoni would discard the losingdiamond from his hand – or play a diamond, eliminating the loser that way.

That was minus 100 instead of 300, a goodsave against the cold vulnerable game by West.

Too strong to preempt? That didn’t stop Sheldon Margulis of St. Louis

on this deal from the afternoon session of theTuesday Fast Open Pairs. His partner was EdSchulte of Tampa FL.

Most players wouldn’t even consider a weakjump overcall with a hand containing 12 high-cardpoints and two quick tricks. With this West hand, though, Margulis thought the conditions were soperfect for a preempt that he decided to forgo the“obvious” 1♠ overcall and try something morecreative. He knew his preempt might misleadpartner about his strength, but with Schulte a passedhand, Margulis wasn’t too worried about missing agame.

After Margulis’ strategic underbid, all three ofthe other players at the table found reasons to bid athigher levels than they might have liked. Northstretched to show his heart support and, encouragedby the vulnerability, Schulte thought his gooddoubleton was adequate to compete at the three-level. South pushed, too, and bid the vulnerableheart game. The auction convinced him it wasNorth-South’s hand, and he was expecting (hoping)dummy would have no wasted honors in spades.

Margulis’ ruse had worked perfectly, and henow added insult to injury by doubling 4♥. Theresult was down three for plus 800, a top on theboard and first overall in the event for Margulis andSchulte.

Schulte said he was the most surprised person atthe table when he heard the double. “I’ve beenplaying bridge for almost forty years, and I thoughtI’d seen everything,” Schulte said. “But this is thefirst time I’ve ever had a partner who had the nerveto preempt, get a non-forcing raise, and then make apenalty double all by himself!”

Not Barry’s faultThe deal described in the Monday issue

(Lucky 13 on page 6) alleged that the only lead todefeat a slam was a trump, a comment inserted bythe editor, not the author. A spade lead also defeatsthe slam.

Despite playingeveryday, however, Kessler managed to amass agrand total of eight points.

The owner of a large new and used musicstore in Springfield IL, Kessler managed to pickup a few points between Orlando and Pittsburgh.Needing only 21.46 at the beginning of the SpringNABC, Kessler had won 20.87 points as ofMonday evening. So he lacks only 0.59.

These caddies were just as enthusiastic aboutSt. Patrick’s Day as young Logan Foy on thefront page. They, too, happily donned theirbouncing shamrocks. They are Greg Keidan,Deardra Fuzzell, Anthony Ames, SkyCappelletti and Nick Crank.

What it means to be IrishIt didn’t seem right to let St. Patrick’s Day go

by without overdoing something. So here we are,a full explanation of what it means to have yourroots in good old Ireland. (Please, no hate mail!)

1) You will never play professional basketball.2) You swear very well. 3) At least one of your cousins holds political

office. 4) You think you sing very well. 5) You have no idea how to make a long story

short 6) You are very good at playing a lot of very bad

golf. 7) Much of your food was boiled. 8) You have never hit your head on the ceiling. 9) You spent a good portion of your childhood

kneeling. 10) Your sister will punch you because your

brother punched her. 11) Many of your sisters are Catherine, Elizabeth

or Mary....and one is Mary CatherineElizabeth.

12) You may not know the words, but that doesn’tstop you from singing.

13) You can’t wait for the other guy to stoptalking so you can start talking.

14) “Irish Stew” is the euphemism for “boiledleftovers from the fridge.”

15) You are, or know someone, named “Murph”. 16) If you don’t know Murph, then you know

Mac, if you don’t know Murph or Mac, thenyou know Sully, and you’ll probably alsoknow Sully McMurphy

17) You are genetically incapable of keeping asecret.

18) And last but not least... Being Irish means...your attention span is so short that ... oh,forget it.

A decade ago, Cohen says, “you could coastinto the round of eight. Now it’s an achievementto get that far.”

Most players would agree.“Obviously,” says Eric Kokish, “everybody

plays better these days. They take it seriously andthey’re doing the work.”

Kokish, who coaches the powerhouse NickNickell team, pointed out that the squad lost amatch in the first four-way set they played in theVanderbilt. The team that beat them, he noted, wasstill in the event as of Wednesday.

Kokish also noted that the intimidation factor, even for a team such as the Nickell squad – withmultiple world and North Americanchampionships – is gone. With all the vugraphshows and other ways of getting information,Kokish said, competitors have seen that even thebest players in the world make mistakes. Thathelps their confidence when they sit down at thetable with the world champions.

Ron Smith, whose team was bounced from theVanderbilt on the second day, said he thinks thatthe creation of events such as the two Mini-Spingolds that run alongside the summer knockoutevent have made the main event tougher as theless-experienced teams opt for playing in eventsthey have a chance to win.

Although the going gets tougher each year,Cohen has found a positive spin. “It does make(the Vanderbilt) a much more prestigious event.”

of the USA Junior Team that will be competing inAustralia this summer. His best previous showingin an open NABC event was a third-place finish inthe Las Vegas Blue Ribbon Pairs with his dad,Ken.

John has been playing bridge with bothparents since he was a young child. “I used to playthree days a week with mom, three days a weekwith dad, and we all took Sunday off,” John said.

The last time John and Laurie played as apartnership was in the Mixed Pairs at the MontrealWorld Championships in 2002. They made thedate for Pittsburgh when John was home for theChristmas holiday. “I didn’t have enough moneyto buy mom a Christmas present, so this is what Icame up with,” John said.

John and Laurie said they almost lost hope ofeven qualifying with their 50-percent and 51-percent scores on Tuesday. John described theirplay in the first two sessions as “pretty much afreight train – we were either running over people,or we were jack-knifing off the tracks.”

The ride was much smoother on Wednesday.John and Laurie scored more than 63 percent ineach of the final two sessions for a total score of2596.59 (77 was top).

“The one thing I’ve always told my son is tonever give up,” Laurie said. “I was still telling himthat right up until the last round tonight.”

In second with 2549.23 were Alan Stout ofMountain Home AR and Lynn Deas ofSchenectady NY. Third place went to MargaretWilliams of Forest Hill MD and Victor King ofHartford CT, who scored 2546.09.

Koch of Moorpark CA, near where he lives.Verveer and McKay are cousins by virtue of

the fact that they have the same grandparents. They have met previously but never played bridgetogether.

Asked their secret of success, Verveer said:“We stay calm. We are happy.”

New pre-Alert/Disclosure forms

If your partnership plays special overcalls, youmust fill out a new pre-Alert/Disclosure form andmake it available to your opponents when youplay in events that allow Mid-Chart and Super-Chart conventions.

This applies to NABC+, regional or higherknockout and Flight A Swiss games. Look for thelight blue forms on the table where conventioncards are available.

Lebhar (1907-1972), under the name of BertLee, earned a national reputation as a sportscasterand later as a bridge player and administrator. Inprivate life, he owned radio and television stationsin Florida.

Lebhar was one of the founders of the GreaterNew York Bridge Association and was elected itsfirst president in 1948.

Convention card reminder• Each player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

• Each player is required to have a conventioncard filled out legibly and on the table throughouta session. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names ofeach member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnershipmay play only the Standard American Yellow Cardand may use only standard carding. Thisrestriction may be lifted only at the beginning of asubsequent round after convention cards havebeen properly prepared and approved by thedirector. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuinguntil the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership hasat least one substantially completed conventioncard but has not fully complied with ACBLregulations, the director may give warnings orassign such penalties as he deems to beappropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+events with visible, real-time cameras. The imageswill be recorded and will be available for laterofficial inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session andparticipants’ behavior, ACBL has another sourceof information that may be useful in determiningfacts and settling issues arising from some typesof ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. This procedure is intended to assure everyone thatthe playing field is level and that misbehavior willnot be tolerated.

Bid Box Alerts andAnnouncements

When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests thatplayers tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at thesame time.

When making an announcement, use theannouncement word — such as “transfer” — andtap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or announces a bidshould make sure his opponents are aware that anAlert or announcement has been made.

Brilliant displayBy Bill Pettis

On the first deal of his team’s match againstthe Roy Welland team, Bill Pettis managed tobring him a very difficult contract, playing itpractically double dummy. The squad emergedwith a 6- IMP win over the No. 3 seed, thanks inlarge measure to this deal.

Pettis was playing with Frederick Allenspachagainst Roy Welland and Bjorn Fallenius.

The registration desk actually has a long anddistinguished history at the North AmericanChampionships. These photos, from theACBL archives, show players busily engagedat registration desks from the Fifties andSixties. Sharp-eyed readers will spot somefamous faces in this shot on the left, including Harry Fishbein (center, in beret).

Before the days of the now-ubiquitous cellphones, the ACBL offered “messagecenters”, such as the one pictured at theleft, at some of its NABCs. Rows of Princessphones were available for players to makelocal and long distance calls.

Perhaps the most strikingelement of these shots is theattire of the players – jacketand ties for men, dresses forwomen.

West North East SouthPass Pass 1♠

Pass (1) Pass 2♣ (2) All Pass(1) Disputed hesitation / gesture.(2) Agreed-upon hesitation.Facts: 2♣ made nine tricks, plus 110 East-West.

The opening lead was the ♠A. The director was

called at the end of play. North-South claimed thattheir opponents had agreed to the first hesitationnoted above; South thought West made a gestureafter 1♠. East-West denied any such agreement, orto the fact that a break in tempo or gesture occurredprior to West’s pass.

Director’s Ruling: There was no agreement asto the facts, therefore no Unauthorized Informationwas established. Having no basis on which to adjustthe score, the table result was allowed to stand.

The Appeal: North-South appealed. Bothappeared before the committee, along with East.South claimed that West was ‘startled’ by heropening bid and hesitated and motioned beforepassing. South felt that this information caused Eastto balance with a sub-minimum hand. North saidthat she did not notice anything unusual, but that shewas not particularly paying attention.

The Decision: South brought no new evidenceto the committee and could not demonstrate that anunmistakable hesitation had occurred. West’s handdid not suggest a hesitation. The Director’s rulingindicated that there was no basis for an adjustment.Merely because East balanced did not demonstratethat UI had been conveyed. East made a case for hisbid, pointing to the fact that West was marked for adecent hand, finesses rated to be onside and he tookthe risk of bidding at matchpoint scoring. Thecommittee affirmed the table result. An AppealWithout Merit Warning was issued to North-South.
