1. ♠ A K 7 6 5 ♥ A K 5 4 3 ♦ K 7 ♣ 8You have 17 high-card points plus distribution points for the two long

suits. You still must start by bidding 1♠ as opening bidder. Some think thatthey would like to bid hearts first and then bid spades later, so that they canshow a big hand by “reversing.” A reverse (when opener bids a new suit atthe two level higher in rank than the suit they opened) always promises

more cards in the first suit than in the second. It istrue that you would be showing a 17 + point handby bidding hearts first, but you would also bedistorting the shape of the hand by promising morehearts than spades.

2. ♠ J 8 6 5 4 ♥ A Q J 10 3 ♦4 ♣K 6You must open with the higher-ranking suit

(spades) even with this weak hand and better hearts. It is all about quantity, not quality. If you start with1♥ and partner bids 2♦, now what?

3. ♠K Q 4 3 ♥8 7 3 ♦A K J ♣9 3 2You must open with 1♣. If you start with 1♦

(tempting), then what do you now bid when partnerresponds 2♣. With 3-3 in minors, always open 1♣. With 4-4 in minors, always open with 1♦.

4. ♠7 4 ♥6 5 2 ♦K 8 7 6 ♣A K Q 5Open 1♦.If you open with 1♣ and partner now bids either 1♥ or 1♠, you do not

have a good rebid. The rules of opening the bidding are all based on havinga legal rebid later.

5. ♠A Q J 6 5 4 ♥7 ♦K 9 4 3 ♣7 3You are the dealer. What do you open? Not 2♠. Your hand is way too

good, even though you have the classic requirements that you have heardabout: 6-10 HCP and a good quality six-card suit. This hand adds up to 13points including distribution or if you count points the other way i.e. length, you must use the rule of 20. Add your HCP and the number of cards in yourtwo longest suits. If this adds to 20 or more, open with one of a suit. Eitherway you have a full opening bid. Start the bidding with 1♠.

6. ♠A Q 8 5 4 ♥K J 9 2 ♦7 4 ♣3 2

Partner opens 1 NT. Now what? You must use Stayman. If you use atransfer, your heart suit will remain undisclosed forever. Here is partner’shand:

♠8 7 ♥A Q 6 3 ♦A K 7 6 ♣Q 4 2You transfer to spades (not knowing that you should always bid

Stayman with 5-4 in the majors) and then when partner bids 2♠, you nowbid 3 NT. Your opponents take the first five club tricks. You should be in thesafe contract of 4♥.

Opening lead: ♦4.Bidding commentary: North’s leap to 4♦

is a splinter jump showing a singleton diamond, strong spade support plus opening-bid values.East’s double of an artificial bid is leaddirecting. South has a perfect hand for slam:nothing wasted in diamonds, and when Southfinds the ♠A plus the heart and club kings in theNorth hand, he decides to gamble for a grand. Most would settle for a small slam.

Play commentary: South can make thiscontract if East has the ♥Q or West has the ♣Q.

Common pitfalls in bidding

By Barbara Seagram

Assuming one of these finesses works, declarerstill has to take the right one! When two queensare missing and taking the right finesse meansmaking the contract, play the ace and king of thelonger suit (hearts). If the queen doesn’t drop, takea finesse in the shorter suit, clubs. Yes, I know, you may have stopped in six and didn’t have toworry about which finesse to take. But one dayyou might.

Further bidding commentary: Manypartnerships use a direct jump from 1♠ to 4♣, 4♦or 4♥ (second hand passing) to show a singletonin the jump suit, opening bid values and at leastfour-card spade support. In response to a 1♥opening, jumps to 3♠ (not 4♠), 4♣ and 4♦(second hand passing) are also splinter jumps. Adirect jump to 4♠ is natural showing a zillionspades with less than opening-bid strength. A 1♠response to an opening bid followed by a leap to4♠ after a minimum rebid also shows long, strongspades with opening-bid strength.

Second in the National 199er Pairs were JonUllman and Don Recht (see page 1).

To Linda Granell, ACBL’s director ofmarketing, Mike Develin is one of the rare breedof young people “who has stepped up to the plate”to promote the game of bridge.

Develin, 25, writes the blog (a web log) forthe ACBL’s Bridge is Cool web site, whose

primary purpose is to interest young people inbridge. The web site (www.bridgeiscool.com) hasa link on the ACBL home page (www.acbl.org).

On his blog, Develin writes about deals he hasplayed and his experiences as a player. He hasbeen gratified to know that he has a followingamong the younger set. “People come up to me attournaments,” he says, “and ask if I’m the guy (onthe blog).”

Develin, a math researcher who lives inBerkeley CA, started playing bridge a couple ofyears ago when his college roommate, Joon Pahk, taught him the game.

He and John Barth won the Non-Life MasterPairs at the 2005 Fall NABC in Denver last year.It was at that tournament that Granell talked toDevelin about doing the blog.

It was a natural fit because of Develin’sinfectious enthusiasm for the game.

“I like the fact that there is a lot of psychologyand that every hand is different,” Develin says.“Bridge will never appeal to everyone, but it issuperior to a lot of hobbies. Bridge is the ultimateintellectual pastime.”

West led the ♥A, switching to a club at trick two.Zia went up with the ace and played a spade to hisqueen and West’s king. A second club came through, ruffed by Zia. He cashed the ♥K and ruffed a heart indummy before playing a second spade, taken by Eastwith the ace.

Zia was in when East returned a spade. Hecashed the ♥K and two more spades, pitching a cluband two diamonds from dummy. In the ending, Ziawas down to the ♦A J 2 in hand and the ♣Q and the♦K 8 in dummy. East had to come down to twodiamonds to keep his club guard, so in the end, whenZia played a diamond to dummy’s king and a seconddiamond, when East didn’t play the queen, Zia knewit was dropping on his left.

East could have made it tougher on Zia had heplayed a diamond when in with the ♠A. That breaksup the squeeze and forces declarer to guess well indiamonds, and would have defeated the contractoutright if West had held the ♦Q J originally.

New Grand LM:Dick Budd

Dick Budd ofPortland ME isamong the ACBL’snewest Grand LifeMasters. Buddcrossed the 10,000-masterpointmilestone this weekin Chicago. To be aGrand LM,

however, a player also needs a win in a majorevent, and Budd took care of that part of therequirement in 2000 when his team won theSenior Knockouts at the Fall NABC inBirmingham. His teammates were Pat McDevitt,Bill Hunter, Bob Ryder, Shome Mukherjee andRich DeMartino.

Budd, a retired theoretical physicist, designedcomputer systems for much of his career.

Life Master newsSheila Kaye and Bob Sommerhalder, a

married couple from Victoria BC, earned theirgold cards on separate days at the Summer NABCbut waited until they could report the happy newstogether. Kaye became an LM on Tuesday playingwith her husband and Bob and Gail Deyell andJan Stewart, all of Toronto, in the morningknockout teams.

Sommerhalder made it Thursday in anotherKO event playing with Kaye and a Markham ONcouple, Gord and Ruth Mori.

Adam Kaplan is a new Bronze Life Master. The 10-year-old, who lives in New Port RicheyFL, increased his masterpoint total to more than500 in the Monday-Tuesday Knockout Teamsplaying with his dad, Todd Kaplan.

On this deal from the second final session ofthe Wernher Open Pairs, Claire Alpert and ValioKovachev scored 100% of the matchpoints – 51out of 51.Dlr: South ♠ 8Vul: N-S ♥ A 3

Alpert had a borderline decision whether toopen 1♥ or 1NT (15-17) with a 4-5-2-2 shape.Personally, I like her choice of 1NT.

Kovachev, of Sofia, Bulgaria, transferred toclubs and Alpert judged, again correctly in nyview, to show a club fit despite holding only adoubleton. In a regular partnership, Kovachevwould have continued with 3♠, showing theshortage, but this was undiscussed and, rather thanrisk a misunderstanding, he just blasted the clubslam on the strength of his two aces and seventhclub.

Quite naturally, West cashed a top spade. Heswitched to a diamond at trick two, but thedamage was already done. Alpert won the king, played the ♠Q, ruffing out the king, ruffeddummy’s third diamond and pitched the ♥3 on herspade winner. The 2-2 club split meant that Alperthad the rest for a wonderful plus 1370. It was alucky contract, perhaps, but South did everythingright in the auction and the play.

Devious discardTurk Melih Ozdil found an evil discard on this

deal against none other than the top-rated player inthe world, Italian Lorenzo Lauria. This dealoccurred in Wednesday’s Spingold match betweenthe teams captained by Amos Kaminski andJimmy Cayne. Ozdil was playing with Canada’sGeorge Mittelman; Lauria was playing with fellowcountryman Alfredo Versace.Dlr: South ♠ 4Vul: None ♥ Q 8 6 4 2

Ozdil led the ♠A, on which Mittlemansignaled with a suit-preference 9, a request for adiamond shift. Ozdil obeyed by playing the ♦10 attrick two to declarer’s king. Lauria tried a lowclub to dummy’s king (on which Ozdil played the3), but Mittleman won the ♣A and continued withthe ♣8. Lauria won the queen (Ozdil pitching thejack), before crossing to the ♦A (Ozdil pitchingthe 9) and ruffing a diamond with the ♥J.

A spade ruff was next, followed by thedummy’s last diamond. West won the queen asdeclarer pitched his last club. And here, Ozdildropped a fiendish ♣10 to make it look as if hehad no more clubs. This was the ending:

♠ —♥ Q 8 6 4♦ —♣ 9

♠ K Q 2 ♠ J♥ 5 ♥ 10 7 3♦ — ♦ —♣ 7 ♣ 2

♠ 10 7♥ A K 9♦ —♣ —

Mittelman continued with the ♣2 and Lauria, believing the discard, ruffed high. Ozdil calmlyfollowed with the ♣7.

Declarer can succeed in this position doubledummy: ruff a spade, and finesse the ♥9, but evengreat players such as Lauria can’t see through thebacks of the cards. He cashed the ♥K and playeda heart to the queen, conceding down one whenthe ♥10 didn’t appear.

joined the crew during the 1996 Fall NABC in SanFrancisco, Russell at the 1999 Spring NABC inVancouver BC and Cotterman at the 2000 SummerNABC in Anaheim.

Nancy Foy, ACBL’s meeting planner for the past15 years, knows the value of the group. “They arethe most fun people I have ever worked with,” shesays. “And they are the most dependable.”

Johnston works with them closely, startingweeks before every NABC. He does the pre-planning with the hotel to decide where events willbe played and various offices located. He and the set-up crew arrive two days before the NABC starts tounload the 42,000 pounds of equipment and supplies.

During the tournament, the set-up crew keepseverything running, from making sure there is plentyof water in the playing areas to adjusting thetemperature when needed.

Johnston, who works at ACBL Headquarters inMemphis, is not a tournament director, but the othersare, and Johnston is happy about that.

“It’s essential that at least three of the four areTDs,” he says, “because they are setting up gamesand sections.”

The crew’s esprit de corps is evident. They arealways joking and laughing, and they handle everycrisis – big or small – with aplomb.

Russell jokes that they were chosen for theirroles, “because we’re the only tournament directorsfit enough and stupid enough” to take on the physicaldemands of the job. More seriously, he says, “Withno other group could we work 10 hours a day andstill be having fun.”

Johnston says the set-up crew is a team in everysense of the word: “We’ve gotten so we cananticipate each other’s moves. We can almost readeach other’s minds.”

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

Goodwill message

Remember – it’s in the spirit of the game tocompletely fill out your convention card. Yourcard tells others what system youplay. Wouldn’t it be nice if youwrote your name on it, too? It’s agreat way to meet new friends.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

A chance to go wrong

On this deal from the final quarter of histeam’s match in the Mini-Spingold KnockoutTeams, Sam Katz had a plan to keep declarer fromfinding the winning line of play – and it worked.Dlr: South ♠ Q J 5Vul: None ♥ K 10 6 3

West led a low spade to the queen and Katz’sace. Katz could see that the diamond finesse wasworking for declarer and he wanted to deflect himfrom the right course, so he fired back a spade, deliberately setting up a trick for declarer he couldnot get any other way. Declarer discarded hislosing heart and Katz’s partner, Dan Goldfein, won the ♠K. He then tried to cash the ♥A, butdeclarer ruffed.

Now South had a parking place for his twolow clubs, and he fell from grace by playing a lowclub to dummy’s ace in order to pitch the ♣5 and♣4 from his hand. This plan, of course, worksonly if Katz started with a singleton or doubleton♦K. The diamond finesse worked, but declarercould not get back to dummy to repeat it, so hefinished one down. It was a 6-IMP gain for Katz’steam. At the other table, South played 4♦, makingsix for plus 170.
