Vertical Management: power comes from the top, work can become very fragmented and communication is lost. Horizontal Management: a horizontal structure provides employees with the tools and skills needed. Cross function (from department to department) communication and creative thinking is encouraged. Organizational chart: a diagram that shows the structure of an organization and the relationships and relative ranks of its parts and positions/jobs. OBJECTIVES TERMINOLOGYStudent will be able to: 1. Define terms used in supervisory, vertical, and horizontal management.

2. Identify function of organizational and departmental charts based on functions.

Supervisory Management: supervisory management is the act of managing employees in a business.Vertical Management: power comes from the top, work can become very fragmented and communication is lost.Horizontal Management: a horizontal structure provides employees with the tools and skills needed. INTRODUCTIONOpen slide “Bellwork”: On a piece of paper, put the following people in order of who you think has the most decision making power or supervisory responsibility at school: Students, teachers, principal, assistant principals, campus monitors, secretaries, custodians.

Teacher will call on non-volunteers to share the hierarchy they chose for the school example. Discuss why they put people in the order they did. Have students compare with the people next to them if their choices were similar. MAR-MgmtConcepts-Powerpoint3.ppt

Open slide “Objective”. Teacher says, “Today we’re going to define management terminology and concept” Teacher distributes the MAR- MgmtConcepts –Handout3a.doc Teacher shows powerpoint1 with the objective and asks students to fill in objectives with key words as teacher introduces objectives.

CONTENT

1. Open “terminology” slides. Teacher will hand out K.I.M. MAR- MgmtConcepts -Handout.3b.doc worksheet and direct students to complete.

1. Students will fill in their name, date, and class period as they receive their handout.Students will complete the (K.I.M.) worksheet while reading posted terminology.

2. Teacher will call on non-volunteering students to share their memory strategies.

2. Students will share what they used as Memory Strategies with their partner.

Identify function of organizational and departmental charts based on functions.

3. Open slides “Organizational Chart”. Teacher will guide students through explanations of each chart. Teacher will ask students and guide them in finding accountability authority, centralization, decentralization, formal organization and informal organization.

3. Students will analyze charts referring to their K.I.M. terminology looking for examples of terminology. Students will respond when addressed.

4. Teacher will use slide “You Try” to help the students use the terminology words to complete MAR- MgmtConcepts –

7. Teacher will compile list on board by calling upon representatives from each group and elicit additional jobs as needed.

7. Students will share information compiled by group.

8. Teacher will direct students to use Microsoft Office Word to draw (using shapes an arrows) an organizational chart for the school based on the created list. Students will be asked to identify the type of organization.

8. Students will work on computers to draw an organizational chart for their school and be prepared to identify the type of organization. Students will have a partner check their chart and give feedback.

CLOSUREOpen “Closure” slide on the back of the MAR- MgmtConcepts-Handout3a.doc. Students will complete closure.Looking back at our bellwork exercise, is it possible in an organization as large as a high school to simply place people in order from top to bottom? Why or why not? Brief answer-2 sentences.

SKILL ASSESSMENTHandouts and closure will be collected. Students will be assessed based on ability to Work graded for points.
