A Small Town Girl who Loves to Make Her Community Smile, Dr. Amber Puhl

“A smile is the light in the window of your face that tells peo-ple you are home” (unknown author).

When asked why she decided to study dentistry, Dr. Amber Puhl answers very simply, “There is nothing better than helping people in your community get a healthy smile.”

Raised in Delta, Ohio, Dr. Puhl received her bachelors of science degree from the University of Dayton, majoring in biology. After graduating, she attended dental school at the Ohio State University and graduated in 2006.

While completing her degree, Dr. Puhl knew that it was important for her to return home, to Northwest Ohio, because her family as well as her husband’s family was in the area. Before she graduated she came into contact with Dr. Frankel and was hired as an associate dentist.

Immediately, Dr. Puhl loved the philosophy of Dr. Frankel’s practice. She looked up to him and admired the quality of care Jon Frankel Dentistry provided for their patients. Therefore, in 2008 she decided to become a long-term partner with Dr. Frankel and bought into the practice, creating Frankel and Puhl Dentistry in Maumee.

Family has always been one of Dr. Puhl’s priorities. In her spare time she is busy chasing around her three-year-old twins and spending time with her husband and family. She also enjoys running, and gardening.

However, at work, Dr. Puhl also considers her patients part of her extended family. The relaxed, comfortable feel of the office is sure to make any patient feel at home, and when at home, you should always be smiling.

Combining the Mastermind of a Dentist and an Engineer: Meet Dr. Richard Shumate

It is funny how life can lead us in many different directions, until we find that one niche that is just right for us. Such is the story of Dr. Richard Shumate, the newest addition to Dr. Frankel’s staff.

After pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Toledo, Dr. Richard Shumate was left feeling a little unfulfilled. While his wife, Dr. Kristen Shumate, was pursuing her education in dentistry, Dr. Shumate began to contemplate medical school. Finally, he too found his calling in dentistry because of the fact that it is a hands-on field and he is able to both diagnose and treat his patients.

He soon graduated from the Ohio State University and moved back to the Toledo area where he was hired as an associate dentist by Dr. Frankel. It didn’t take long for Dr. Shumate to feel at home and learn that his interests in technology and dentistry paralleled nicely with the philosophies of Jon Fran-kel Dentistry. More specifically, Dr. Shumate considers Dr. Frankel a mentor, especially in the advancements of tooth implants and sedation practices.

In addition to these interests, Dr. Shumate loves the caring environment of Dr. Frankel’s office and enjoys making his patients who are originally fearful feel comfortable and relaxed.

While he is at home, he enjoys spending time with his wife of seven years and his young daughter and son. You can also find Dr. Shumate running and training for triathlons.

Although his background may not be traditional to the experi-ences of other dentists, he has truly found his home with D. Frankel and his staff. He is committed to his practice and pas-sionate about what this field has had to offer him.

What Do You Get When You Combine a Great, Friendly Dentist with a Busy Super Mom? Dr. Rina Gudelman-Segall.

There is no other way to put it; Dr. Gudelman-Segall does it all!

Toledo born and bred, Dr. Rina Gudelman-Segall graduated from Sylvania Southview and attended the University of Cincinnati where she majored in biology. Knowing that she wanted to pursue a career in the health field, where she got to combine her two passions– science and working with people, Dr. Gudelman-Segall graduated with a doctorate in dentistry (DDS) from the Ohio State University in 1991 and moved back to Toledo to begin practicing dentistry.

She has been with Dr. Frankel for over 5 years and still believes that Jon Frankel Dentistry is a great fit for her to continue her practice. She loves the fact that Dr. Frankel keeps up-to-date with the latest technology and has a comfortable, warm, family-friendly atmosphere. Additionally, Dr. Gudelman-Segall finds that her greatest reward of being a dentist is being able to help people feel at ease and better about themselves, both of which are primary goals of Dr. Frankel’s team.

Married for over 24 years and with two teenagers at home, when Dr. Gudelman-Segall is away from the office she is often found trying to balance the sporting events of her children, who both play multiple sports at Sylvania Southview. Additionally, she enjoys working out and cooking.

Being involved in all of her kids’ activities takes up a lot of time; however, she is committed to making sure she does not miss any games. Between being a great, friendly dentist and super mom, there is no question that Dr. Gudelman-Segall truly does it all!

Dr. Chad Hines: The Lone Hawkeye in the Land of the Buckeyes

Some may wonder how it would feel to be the only doctor that is a non Ohio State alumnus at Dr. Frankel’s office, yet Dr. Hines enjoys it saying, “I am not a Wolverine, I am not a Buckeye, I am neutral.”

Dr. Hines is originally from Iowa City, Iowa and completed his doctorate of dentistry in 2002 from the University of Iowa. In June of 2002, he moved to the Toledo area with his wife, whose family is from the Perrysburg area. He has been with Dr. Frankel for over two years now and not only loves the philosophy of Dr. Frankel’s practice and but also how busy it is. In fact, Dr. Hines likes to be busy. He is known to travel during most of his free time, going anywhere from Las Vegas, New York City, Chicago, or Iowa to watch Saturday football games.

While in the office, however, Dr. Hines loves to perform of his art. He claims that he was immediately attracted to dentistry because he got to combine his passion for science with creativity. In fact, he appreciates the challenges of the profession because it combines so many different interests: including, science in anatomy and physiology, art in using your hands and creativity to diagnose and treat patients, and people skills when making even the most uncomfortable and worried patients feel at ease during a root canal.

Dr. Hines is especially interested in many of the technological advances within the field and hopes to continue his education in implantology and ceramic reconstruction (CERECS) as well as many more aspects of dentistry.

Even though he is not an Ohio State graduate, Dr. Hines’ desire to help his patients along with his areas of interest align perfectly with Jon Frankel Dentistry and is one of the contributing factors to our success.

PHILOSOPHY

Page 5: Jon Frankel Welcome

D r. Frankel and his staff are committed to providing optimal dental care. Our highly trained staff will guide and advise you toward creating a personal financial option assuring you and your family healthy and beautiful smiles.

Payment options are discussed during the initial visit. We accept cash, check, Visa and MasterCard, and Care Credit (an individualized dental payment plan).

Dental Insurance has become increasingly difficult to understand. It is a benefit your employer provides toward your dental treatment. The limits of your coverage and your responsibility will be researched and explained to you by our experienced staff. The goal of most dental insurance policies is to provide only basic care for specific dental procedures. The benefits that you receive from the dental insurance company for your current insurance plan have nothing to do with your needs or achieving a high quality, complete result. Many needed services may not be covered. We urge you to read the policy so that you are fully aware of coverage and any limitations of the benefits provided.

As a courtesy, our office will complete and submit your insurance forms to attain the maximum reimbursement. Please remember that you are ultimately responsible for all expenses incurred and that if needed we assist you in finding the ideal payment option. Dr. Frankel extends these services to afford you dental and oral health.

“I was treated with dignity, kindness and respect. Every one greeted me with smiles. I could feel the warmth and caring of all your Staff which helps to make my visits to your Dental Clinic tolerable. Thanks.”

In the last few years, patient protection has become an issue of public concern. With the discovery of the AIDS (HIV) virus and the medical implications of Hepatitis-B, it has become necessary for health care facilities to consistently ap-ply state of the art sterilization and disinfection techniques to provide patients with maximum protection.

In our office, your safety is our highest priority. Throughout the day, we continuously and thoroughly sterilize our equipment for your protection. Our protocol for sterilization includes the following:

Before and after each patient appointment, all treatment surfaces (e.g., counter tops, chair surfaces, lights, x-ray machines, and trays) are disinfected with the most effective and safest products available.

To ensure your safety, we follow a number of standard sterilization procedures with all instruments and hand pieces. First, -they ore brought into our sterilization room and placed in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove even microscopic debris. The instruments and hand pieces are the rinsed thoroughly before being sterilized in and autoclave, which runs for 20 minutes and reaches a temperature of 400-425 degrees, thereby destroying all bacteria and all viruses.

Our autoclave and dry heat sterilizer are monitored regularly to ensure their effectiveness and safety. Staff members use masks, safety glosses, and new gloves for each patient.

All staff members are updated annually in proper patient protection procedures and have been vaccinated against the Hepatitis-B virus. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding patient protection and give you a personal tour of our sterilization facility.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING“Each year in the U.S. 30,000 individ-uals are newly diagnosed with oral cancer. Of that 30,000 one half will die within 5 years. In the U.S. one person dies of oral cancer every hour

of every day.”

THE ORAL CANCER FOUNDATION We are committed to the prevention of oral cancer through early identi-fication of pre-cancerous conditions, and provide oral cancer screenings

at each oral hygiene care visit.

PERIODONTAL EXAMINATION“Periodontal bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel to major organs and begin new infections. Research suggests that this may con-tribute to heart disease, increase the risk: of stroke, increase the risk: of a pre-term, low birth weight baby, pose serious threat to people com-promised by diabetes, respiratory diseases or osteoporosis. If you val-ue your oral as well os your overall health. A periodontal evaluation is a

good idea.”

American Academy of Periodontology

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United states. Dr. Frankel will routinely

examine and evaluate the soft tis-sue and hard tissues that support your teeth. Together we will create a beautiful smile that reflects your overall health.

OCCLUSAL EXAMINATION “People who grind and clench, called bruxers, unintentionally bite down too hard at inappropriate times, such as in their sleep.. People usually aren’t diagnosed with bruxism until it is too late because so may people don’t realize they have the habit. Others mistakenly believe that their teeth must touch at all times ... They experience jaw pain, tense muscles, and headaches along with excessive wear of their teeth.”

Academy of General Dentistry

The forces of your bite can be adjust-ed by minor polishing of the enamel surfaces or smoothing of the fillings in the teeth. A careful examination of the way you close your teeth to-gether will allow Dr. Frankel to re-distribute or redirect biting forces. Adjustments to chewing surfaces can often eliminate headaches oc-curring as a result of irregular biting patterns.

CARIES EXAMDuring this exam Dr. Frankel uses a clinical exam, x-ray findings, intra-oral camera and laser detection to detect decay. This dedication to de-

tail reveals decay early.

TEMPORO-MANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DYSFUNCTION EXAMINATION“TMJ Dysfunction is a popular term to describe a disorder of the jaw joints or the muscles that control the joints ... The primary problem can be in the joints themselves, the muscles of the face and jaw, or a combina-tion of these... It is estimated that as many as 44 million Americans suffer from one or more of these symp-toms. Many never think to seek a dentist for help.”

American Academy of Craniofacial Pain

TMJ is a condition that afflicts thousands of people. Frequent in-dicators of TMJ include popping and clicking of the jaw, limited jaw function, pain in the neck, shoul-ders, and upper back, and pain and pressure in the face and ears. Dr. Frankel provides conservative ther-apies that can eliminate this painful and frustrating problem.

X-RAYS X-rays assist in the detection of cavities between the teeth that may not be visible in the mouth. Cavities that are just beginning can also be detected earlier on X-ray so that your treatment becomes less invasive and costly.

PANOREX The Panorex film provides Dr. Frankel with a panoramic view of the oral cavity and provides information at a glance about existing filling a supporting bone, sources of infection, tumors, cysts and decay. The Panorex film shows more of the mouth and surrounding structures, but with less detail on individual teeth, than small films.

ORAL CDX Early detection of oral cancer is easy and painless with this progressive technique. A quick spin with a small radial brush and a sample of cells are sent to OralScan Labs. The results can be expected in just two days.

VELSCOPE Velscope assists in detecting diseases and abnormalities including oral cancer that may not be evident under white light. This new, exciting technology utilizes safe high energy light and a specialized filter.

LASER RESTORATIONS Waterlase uses a Hydrokinetic process to gently wash away decay with YSGG laser-energized water droplets. In most cases, this means no drills, no needles and no numbness.

LASER GUM TREATMENT Our soft tissue management options include Waterlase laser procedures. Infected tissue is gently washed away and the area is decontaminated. Our patients have been pleased with the ease of treatment and the tissue response.

We offer a variety of different implant systems and can perform multiple procedures on the same day. Dr. Frankel will be happy to evaluate your dental needs and determine if you are a candidate for this procedure.

AIR ABRASION Fine particles of a sand-like material are released under high pressure directly to a localized tooth surface. These forced air particles replace “drills” to remove decay from the tooth surface, making some procedures less invasive, more comfortable, and faster for the patient than conventional treatment. Typically, no anesthesia is required for this procedure.

DIAGNO-DENT This highly sensitive laser tip is fine-tuned to your tooth density and detects unseen decay. Our patients appreciate this as an excellent tool in detecting decay early.
