Tickets for the event are $100 per person, and all proceeds will pay for various services at JayDoc Community Clinic. Please join us for this meaningful celebration. If you are unable to attend but would like to help, consider sponsoring one of the many volunteers at the clinic. Or, donations in any amount are welcome. For more information or to make reservations, call 293-2607. J Nearly 10 years ago, a few medical students on the Wichita campus joined forces to set up a community health care clinic for the underserved in our area. While they were medical students in Kansas City, they had been involved with setting up a similar clinic. Seeing the same need here in Wichita, our local JayDoc Community Clinic was born. In partnership with The Guadalupe Clinic, the clinic is operated by medical students and pre-med students, under the supervision of licensed physicians. The clinic provides a service to the community at the same time that students learn and gain experience. The JayDoc Community Clinic provides health care to anyone who can’t get care in other places because of a lack of health insurance. A donation of $5 is requested per visit, but no one is turned away if they can’t pay. As the saying goes, nothing in life is really free, and that includes the free clinic. The care given at JayDoc is costly … and not a lot of money is coming in. The clinic relies heavily on donations in order to provide the quality care needed. KU Wichita Center for Breast Cancer Survivorship will represent us at the Komen Race for the Cure again this year. This is the 25 th anniversary of the race so it’s sure to be an exciting time. The race is Saturday, Sept. 27, at Waterwalk Plaza, 515 S. Main. Stop by the KU booth, say hi, and check out what they have to offer.

Join us at the next KU Pride at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Sunflower Room. Dr. Elizabeth Ablah, PMPH associate professor, will give her take on worksite wellness. Hear what she has to say and get her expert answers to your own questions. We’ll have light, healthy refreshments on hand as well. Don’t miss it.

Join us … the lectures are open to the public. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dugan-Gorges Conference Center, Newman University, 3100 W. McCormick Registration required: $5 (includes lunch) “Understanding Alzheimer’s” Tuesday, Oct. 14 Amy Siple, MSN, FNP-BC Associate professor of nursing, Newman University healthpulse.kumc.edu

Did you know public affairs offers a variety of items to support your department events? We’ve got your banners, flags, directional signs, easels, beverage tubs, and giant inflatable Jayhawk covered. Visit our website and fill out an event support request form to reserve the goods that will make your event shine. Additionally, you can request an appearance by our very own Baby Jay. He can greet and hang out with your guests, give photo ops, and generally create a fun atmosphere. Who doesn’t want a high five from Baby Jay? All Baby Jay appearances must have a direct connection to KUSM–W.

Is there a special event happening in your department? Do you know a student who has an interesting hobby, or who has made a significant accomplishment? Are you involved in community outreach? An educational program? A hands-on workshop or training session? Public affairs wants to know about any and all of these events. There are a variety of ways we can publicize events and accomplishments in the school, but we can’t promote them if we don’t know they’re happening. Though not every event is going to catch the attention of the media, we can still promote your event through one of our social media accounts, our monthly community newsletter, or by writing our own feature story for the school’s website. Keep us informed. Drop us an email and tell us what’s happening. We’ll share the good news.

Kim Shore, budget analyst Administrative & Financial Services Kudos to Kim! Kim was recently given two challenging contract changes that required extensive coordination. First, surgery wanted to make personnel changes for faculty in the GME contract. What might have appeared to be an uncomplicated request was really like a jigsaw puzzle, shuffling funds and people

to achieve the goal. Second, a change was requested to increase a percentage in the GME contracts. Kim coordinated an agreement from the four parties involved and implemented the one-digit change that ultimately resulted in 10+ contract revisions. I want to recognize and thank Kim for accomplishing these and all contract changes that are rarely simple. Nominated by Tyann Orton, assistant dean for finance Administrative & Financial Services

September Employee Assistance Program (EAP) article: No Hassle Car Buying Buying a car, whether it’s new or used, is one of the most important purchases you’ll make, so it’s important to enter the showroom or a meeting with a private owner with the right information and attitude. The result can be walking away with no regrets, a good deal, and the car you want. Get car buying tips at http://www.kdheks.gov/hcf/healthquest/download/CarBuying.pdf. For personalized support with car buying, contact your Employee Assistance Program toll-free at 1-888-275-1205, option 7.

September EAP webinar announced The Sandwich Generation: Balancing Your Personal Life with the Needs of Your Older Parents or Loved Ones 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 Most of us reach a point in life when parents or elderly relatives begin to require more attention and time. Sometimes, they require our financial support as well. Balancing work, family, and caregiving responsibilities can present some challenges. This workshop provides an overview of information to help the participant cope with their personal life while dealing with their elder’s needs. Register at https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/767725902.

HealthQuest September online seminar: All About Cholesterol Do you know your "good" cholesterol from your "bad" cholesterol? Where do triglycerides fit into the heart-health puzzle? Learn the answers to these questions and how to improve your own heart health. Participate in this online seminar anytime 24/7 at www.KansasHealthQuest.com and earn two credits when complete. Reminder: New HealthQuest Rewards Program deadline is Nov. 15, 2014 The deadline for employees to qualify for the 2015 premium incentive discount has been extended to Nov. 15, 2014. Those who complete the required health assessment questionnaire (worth 10 credits) and earn an additional 20 credits (for a total of 30 credits) by Nov. 15, 2014, will qualify for a $480 premium incentive discount for plan year 2015. Please note that the next HealthQuest program year will now begin on Nov. 16, 2014. Full details on the Rewards Program are available at http://www.kdheks.gov/hcf/healthquest/rewards.html. Can I still participate in a biometric screening before Nov. 15? There are two options to complete a biometric screening from now until Nov. 15 if you have not done so already:

1. Use biometric results from a recent physician's visit to complete the health assessment

questionnaire. The State Employee Health Plan will cover one preventive exam per calendar year in full (with no co-pay). Print the Biometric Values Form to take with you to your appointment. Employees may use test results from visits occurring between Aug. 1, 2013, and Nov. 15, 2014.

2. Order an at-home test kit, log into your account on the wellness portal at

www.KansasHealthQuest.com and click on "Biometric Screenings" from the left menu and then select "At-Home Screening Kits." You should not order an at-home kit if you have already done so this year. At-home screening kits must be postmarked for return by Oct. 15, 2014.

Onsite screening events will resume in December 2014 for the next HealthQuest program year. What if I have already scheduled preventive exams for this fall? Employees can report their doctor, dental, and vision appointments taking place during the extension period (Aug. 1 - Nov. 15) for credits during the next program year. They just need to wait until Nov. 16 when the new program year begins to report these on the wellness portal at www.KansasHealthQuest.com. How can I confirm my discount status? Employees can confirm their discount status by logging into their account at www.KansasHealthQuest.com and clicking on the “My Printable Credits Summary” link from the left menu. If you are still unsure or have trouble with this site, you can call the HealthQuest help desk toll-free at 1-888-275-1205, option 9, for assistance.
