FOREWORD

In my profession, I follow a saying which says ”we run after new business but always keep our existing customers satisfied”. We are very much pleased to receive such a good response from our team members but also we need our already contributed members to keep contributing. We thank and appreciate Ramachandran and Ranjith for their continuous contributions. We do expect more participation from next month onwards, also once

the exams get over, please encourage your children to contribute more. The aim of this bulletin is to act as a tiny step in improving your inborn creative skills. We would like to include as many members’ contributions as possible. Thank you very much once again and happy reading.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We are proud to have our fourth issue of Jaycee Herald. We

are really happy to unearth the hidden talents of our jaycee

members. In this month’s bulletin, we have unearthed another

great talent, please look into Mrs. Betty Ranjith’s artistic

talents in Creative Corner. This is the aim of this bulletin, I

request all the members to keep contributing and let us make

this small bulletin a worth read.

Through the month….

JCI Trichur had a busy February.

LOTS was conducted in NESTT Muvattupuzha and six members

from your chapter attended the seminar. The Pilot Faculty was

the Acharya of Trainers, Shri. MAS Menon, who was ably

assisted by Dr. Siju Thottappilly, JC. Jiji Joseph and Jc.

Sampson Thomas, all veterans in the training field. It was a

two day event which really motivated all the participants.

JCI India celebrated Integrity Day on 2nd February and we

celebrated the event in NSS School where the Oath of Integrity

was taken by around 300 students of the School. Special

mention should be made for JC. Ramachandran, who took

great efforts to make the event a great success.

Chapter Development and Management Training was

conducted by ZVP Rejanish A, on February 12, at Hotel Palace

Tower. Majority of your CGB members participated in the

training. We really appreciate the effort taken by the ZVP, in

elaborating the roles assigned to each office bearer and the

training took around 1.5 hours and was an enlightening one.

Your Chapter Governing Board conducted their meeting in

Hotel Palace Tower on February 12, and various matters were

discussed in detail. The CGB was well attended and a very

fruitful one.

JCI international courses of Achieve, Admin & Impact was

conducted by JCI Trichur on 15th February at Hotel Pooram

International. 7 members from our chapter participated in the

training session, the Pilot Faculty was JCI. Sen . Harish Kumar,

who did a great job in explaining the details. Program Director

for the training was JCI. Sen. Sudhir Achuthan, who put his

signature on the training seminar. JCI. Sen. Ranjith Boban

helped a great deal, in the registering and other formalities of

this training course.

As a part of International Women’s day celebration, Jaycerettes

of our chapter conducted a workshop on self-defense

techniques to the students of Vimala College, in association

with the Women Development Cell of the college. JC. Kishore &

JC. Taji Joseph who do workshops under the brand name

“Shield” were the trainers and it was a brilliant training

session. The college authorities appreciated the workshop a

great deal and have requested to repeat the workshop in the

near future. More than 12 Jaycerettes attended the workshop

and it was really an eye-opener to the students and staff of the

Vimala College.

JC. Sanoj V.V and JC. Joseph Lal participated in JCI shuttle

tournament conducted by JCI Irinjalakuda. They tried their

level best but met with a much more talented opponent and

had to turn back empty handed. It is the participation that

counts and not winning or losing, and I hope this will be an

incentive to work harder and win laurels in the next time.

JCI Trichur conducted 5 chain seminars at the request of

college authorities of Vimala College. First Seminar was

conducted by Jc. Smitha Harish, Zone Director, Jaycerette &

Lady JC wing of Zone XX. Her seminar was on the topic

“Leadership”. It was followed by our Zone Trainer JC. Sen.

Sudhir Achuthan, who took classes on “Goal Setting & Auto

Suggestions”. Jc. Ajith Kaimal took classes on “ Entrepreneurial

Motivation” followed by Jc. Ramachandran’s Class on “ Legal

challenges of lady entrepreneurs”. JC. Vinitha Sajith conducted

a workshop on Jewellery making; she was ably assisted by

Vidya Sanoj & Vinnie Fijo. The students and college authorities

have appreciated our members’ efforts and have informed that

they will require such workshops and seminars in the near

future also.

Dr. P.T. Jose & Dr. Libison who were members in JCI Trichur

Alosyous got transferred to our chapter during the month and

accordingly, now our official member strength has reached a

landmark of 50 members.

Our Chapter dues towards JCI India were paid in time and a

copy of our APP, Budget and Annual accounts were submitted

to the National Head Quarters in time.

Let me conclude with a nice story..

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling.

It seemed that, as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.

She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," the young woman replied. The mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she

observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity - boiling water - but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened! The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" the mother asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong but, with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit but, after a death, a breakup, or a financial hardship, does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavour.

If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

So be like a coffee bean, elevate yourself to another level to

face adversities and come out victorious.

The Sceptical Patriot by Sidin Vadukut

Publisher – Rupa; Year of Publication – 2014;

Pages – 208

Sidin Vadukut’s “The Sceptical Patriot” is the type of book that

needs to be in Indian school libraries. In it, he explores the

truthfulness of many of the facts that we “know” about India

ranging from the invention of zero to plastic surgery. A civilization

as ancient as the one in the subcontinent is bound to have many

myths and legends, overgrown by hearsay and exaggeration. A

course correction is, at times, needed.

In a work vastly more different than his satirical Dork series,

Vadukut has matured as an author to move towards an alternate

plane. The Sceptical Patriot is not meant for avid historians, but

for beginners who are fascinated by many things Indian. The

research done is excellent and for most part he sticks to the

points being discussed. While it is easy for many writers to focus

too much on research and bring out a boring technical book,

Vadukut has managed to add just the right bit of humor to keep

the average reader interested. He adds a personal touch as well,

bringing in anecdotes from his life. While the connect between

the anecdotes and the content are at times disjointed, they do

well in humanizing the content.

A two chapter summation may sound too much, but it justifies

the need for the book. It is often said history is written by the

winners, but unless you kill off the losers like the way we killed

off the Neanderthals, it is likely that their history will survive,

creating a confusing version of the world. For example, have you

ever thought why the only two people who would go for ritual

circumcision in the modern world prior to Moses were the

Egyptians and the Jews? For those really interested in history

there are, for most part, material available for finding the truth.

However, when history gets taught by the winners, it manages to

imbibe itself into a society that may have otherwise rejected it.

The Sceptical Patriot do not seek to rewrite history textbooks,

but it keeps the student open to more ideas. And for that it needs

to be in Indian school libraries.

My memories in JCI

I joined in Jaycee movement in 2004 when Jossy B Chacko was

the President. My journey for the last 10 years in this

organization gave me a lot of excitement and enthusiasm which I

would like to share with my junior team members.

John Paul, our Past ZP invited me to this organization in early

2003. But I was reluctant to join since I thought club culture is

not in tune with my attitude. John was my junior during my CA

Studies and I had a very close relationship with him. His

consistent follow up made me join JCI Trichur (formerly known as

Trichur Jaycees).

I joined in a General Body Meeting which was conducted in John

Paul’s Residence. I was very much comfortable and all the

members present over there gave me a cordial welcome. My

starting was good and it continues the same way, even in my 11th

year in JCI.

JCI, previously known as Jaycees and Trichur Jaycees was

reasonable known to the public mainly because of the welcome

board fixed by Trichur Jaycees in the four entrances of Trichur

Town.

I was elected to CGB in 2005 and appointed as Programme

Director of Kindafest. Still I remember the total budget for the

programme was only Rs 7500. The programme was conducted in

Model Girls School. Jc Rajesh George was the President in 2005.

In 2006 I was elected as Secretary when Jc Jossy C M was the

President. It was a heavy year for me. We used to meet in almost

all the days for discussing Jaycee activities. We had conducted a

lot of programmes during that year. In that year I was declared

as the outstanding LOM Officer Winner of Zone XX.

2010 was a crucial year for JCI Trichur. I was elected the

President of the LOM. However due to difference in opinion

among the members, the chapter was on the verge of split. It

was a challenge for me. The past presidents along with the

hardcore Jaycees on one side and new blood jaycees on the other

side. Since I always believe in tradition I stood along with my

experienced Jaycees. JCI Trichur continued its journey with

veterans. But to my surprise all my past presidents worked like

new jaycees and I added 23 new members in that year. I was

also elected as Outstanding LOM President of that year. Our

President Jc Manoj, IPP Jojo, and Secretary Jc Sajith are also

joined during my tenure. I got very good support from Zone

officials. In the same year I was also nominated as National

Finance Committee member at National Level.

After that I worked in Zone for three years as Zone Co

coordinators in different portfolios.

If I look back to my 10 year period in Jaycee I am very much

proud of being a member of JCI Trichur. I learned the art of

conducting programmes, the art of management of people and

public speaking from JCI. Some of the memorable programmes

during my Jaycees career are Sewing Machine distribution, Blood

donation, Jayceeweek celebration, Clean city campaign,

Onasadya with Medical college patients, Kindafest, Music

Competition, Volley Ball Tournament, Food Fest, Uniform

distribution, Jaycerette Conference, Regional Conference, Natcon

I have attended all the Zone Conferences since 2004 and

attended 3 Natcons. I have learned a lot from Jaycee. I bow my

head to Jaycee for the wonderful opportunities given to me during

last 10 years. Many of my Jaycee friends turned to my

professional clients later on. The relationship I could make during

this period is unforgettable. Thanks to Jaycees.

I request all my Jaycee friends to do selfless service to the

organization. The Organization will reward you in due course. Do

not expect for each and every action. Organization will bring you

tremendous opportunities.

Stringent business norms spell bad news for small

companies –The Companies Act, 2013

The number of companies being registered under the new Companies Act could come down further as the government has made the norms more stringent for businesses to be classified as small companies. Under the new norms notified by the corporate affairs ministry, to classify as a small company, a company (other than a public company) should not have paid up capital exceeding Rs 50 lakh and turnover not more than Rs 2 crore. Under the earlier norms, a company meeting only one of these conditions would have qualified as a small company. "Under the new definition of small company, it would need to meet both the share capital and turnover criteria to be categorised as such. This is likely to take out several companies from the scope of the provisions of small companies under the Companies Act," said Sai Venkateshwaran partner, accounting advisory services at KPMG in India.

There are number of exemptions including compliances and statutory requirements, which the government gives to small companies. In addition to filings, the number of board meeting was also another benefit available to small companies.

MCA vide notification dated 16th February 2015 in consultation with National Advisory Committee on Accounting Standards, has issued the Companies (Indian Accounting Standards) Rules, 2015. The gist of the rules is given below

The rule shall come into force on the 1st day of April, 2015

The accounting standards as specified in the Annexure to the rules to be called the Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS)

On voluntary basis For financial statements for accounting periods beginning on

or after April 1, 2015, with the comparatives for the periods ending 31st March, 2015 or thereafter, any company may comply with Ind AS.

On mandatory basis Following classes of companies are mandatorily required to comply with Ind AS.

o Insurance companies, banking companies and non-banking finance companies.

The Accounting standards as specified in Annexure to the Companies (Accounting Standards) Rules, 2006 shall be the Accounting Standards applicable to the companies other than the classes of companies which are voluntarily or mandatorily complying with Ind AS

A company which follows the Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) shall follow such standards only.

WHY DO WE NEED SPORTS AND GAMES? Sports and games play a very significant role in human life since childhood to adulthood. They not only rejuvenate our faded nerves but also contribute to our physical well-being. They are absolutely necessary in life. Even the busiest periods of our life require some healthy enjoyment. Games provide a sort of mental recreation and furnish us with very fresh energy. Majority of sports events and games play a vital role in one’s capacity building, not only on physical aspect but mental stability and fitness also. They give us healthy exercise and keep us fit and fine. Games and sports help us to develop team spirit and sportsmanship. It is rightly said that the battle of waterloo was won on the play ground of Eton. Sports teaches us many important virtues like team spirit, friendship, fighting spirit & capacity building which truly helps a person to face many similar issues in

our life. It directly relates to our health and if we are not healthy fit and fine, then even millions of rupees do not come to rescue our life. It is rightly said. “If money is lost nothing is lost. If health is lost something is lost but if character is lost everything is lost.” But it is very true that sports and games are the best source to develop individual character, social character and national character too. I hope you will understand the value of sports and Games.
