  • PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

We are proud to have our seventh issue of Jaycee Herald. We

are really happy to unearth the hidden talents of our jaycee

members. It was a proud moment for all the JCI Trichur

members to accept the award of Outstanding Lom Bulletin

from Zone Vice President during MIDCON. I request all the

members to keep contributing and we can make this small

    bulletin a worthwhile read.

    Through the month.

The month of May is normally the hottest month of the year in

this part of the world. And this year also the climate played its

part, but JCI Trichur with its activities raised the temperature a

    notch higher.

During the month, we hosted National President of JCI India,

JC. G. Subramanian Sir in a multi-chapter meeting, We hosted

Zone Governing Board Meeting, We had a Residential Family

GB at Nira Nilavu, Poomala and we got eight recognitions for

our efforts in the MIDCON from our Zone Vice President.

National Presidents Visit was an energy booster for the

chapter. His speech was electrifying and energy contagious,

the manner in which he spoke says a lot about our leaders

passion to the organization and its ideals. It was great listening

to him. We were really sad as some of chapters missed the

multi-chapter meeting and we really believe that if they had

attended the meeting, it would have really affected their

chapter activities more positively. But JCI Trichur can be proud

of its members as our members attended in large numbers and

  • actively participated in the meeting. Our Zone President, JC

Sudhin Ashok and other leaders of Zone XX participated in the

    multi-chapter meeting.

We also hosted the Zone Governing Board meeting, which was

well attended by the Zone XX governing board members. All

the participants including the National President and Zone

President appreciated JCI Trichurs efforts in hosting the Multi-

chapter meeting and ZGB. I would like to thank our PD JC

Ramachandran who worked with great enthusiasm to make

this event a successful one. Our Secretary JC Sajith Paul and

Treasurer Ranjith Boban were a constant support to this event

and it was because of their effort the event went on well. Also

Thanks to JC Manoj K V who handled the registration part very

    well.

We had a residential family GB at NiraNilavu, Poomala which

was a great bonding experience to the members. Jaycerettes

displayed their initiative and wonderfully enacted a skit which

was a reflection of modern house hold. It was really a great

effort on our lady members part to display such a creative flair

in such a short time. Our JC members equally went on the task

and also displayed their creative talents in a skit which was

well appreciated. There were games of carroms, cricket,

shuttle badminton, dumb charades, anthakshari, music, riddles

n puzzles, barbeque and a lot more to entertain the gathering.

A special thanks to our PD Sanoj Alappat for wonderfully

organizing the get together. Also, special thanks are due to Jc

Benjamin and Sajith who ably supported the chapter in

arranging delicious food to all of us.

MIDCON 2015 held at Thodupuzha was a great event for JCI

Trichur. We had a record 24 participants taking part in the

event. We bagged a whooping EIGHT awards from our Zone

Vice President. It was a really proud moment for all of us.

    We got the awards for:-

A special thanks to JC Joshy Thottan our PD for MIDCON who

organized such a large contingent to the meeting. Let us

continue the good work to keep JCI Trichurs name flying high.

My friend Jerry was one of the most positive people I had ever known. He was always in a good mood and always had something encouraging tosay.

He was a manager at a restaurant. If his employee had a bad day, Jerry always helped him to look on the positive side of the situation.

Jerrys attitude truly amazed me. So one day I asked him: How can you be so positive all the time? . He replied: You see, every morning I tell myself, that I have two choices for that day to be in a good mood or in a bad. I choose the good one. And when something wrong happens, I can be sad and angry or I can learn from it instead. I choose to learn. Thus I choose the positive side of life. I said: It is not that easy. He replied: Yes it is. Life is all about choices. You can choose how people or situation will affect your mood, your life.

One morning Jerry left the restaurants back door open and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. He tried to open the safe, but his hands shook due to nervousness and he slipped off

  • the combination. So the robbers shot him. Fortunately, Jerry was quickly found and brought to the nearest hospital. After many hours long intensive care, Jerry was released home.

When I met him, I asked what his thoughts were during the robbery. I thought that I should have locked the back door, he replied. Then, when I was lying on the floor, I remembered about my choices in this case: a choice to live and a choice to die. I chose to live.

I asked, if he was scared. Jerry continued: When they wheeled

me into emergency room and I looked at the faces of doctors, I got truly scared. I knew that I need to do something. So when the nurse asked me, if I was allergic to anything, I replied Yes. Doctors and nurses stopped working and waited for my answer. I

took a deep breath and yelled Bullets. They started laughing and I said: My choice is to live, treat me as I am alive, not dead.

Now Jerry is alive owing to skills of his doctors, however his amazing attitude played an important role too. I learned from him, that every day we should choose to live fully no matter

    what..

    Live Life

    Thanking you,

    Yours truly

    The Siege by Ismail Kadare

Publisher Canongate; Year of Publication 1970; Pages 329

A poet, an astrologer, a chronicler and a janissary are strolling

through an army camp sipping raki. The battle awaits them the

next day and it is not certain whether they will see another day.

For days they have been waiting for the battle to commence, but

now that the war is upon them, it is time to celebrate.

There are many battle stories that have been set immortal in ink,

but "The Siege" stands apart from these stories. Instead of

merely writing a book about a battle, Ismail Kadare comes down

amongst the soldiers to venture into their life off the battlefield.

"The Siege" is centred on a chronicler whose job is to imprint the

battle in eternal memory. This allows the author to explore the

various facets of the people that the chronicler comes across

during his work. By humanizing the characters of war, it brings

the reader into the centre of the army camp with the hope of

    sipping raki with the soldiers.

It deviates from the chronicler at the crucial junctures of the

battle to bring us the intricacies of politics in the war council. We

  • see stratagem being discussed, as various factions ally

themselves to their preferred ploy, and then we see it play out in

the actual siege itself, as the Ottomans bombard and sap the

Albanians, while a shadowy saviour seemingly await beyond the

perimeter of war. Thus, the reader is kept aware of the status of

    the battle as well.

Set in late fifteenth century, the book talks of a battle in an

Albania threatened by Ottomans at the peak of their power in

Europe. Curiously enough, the author, though an Albanian, writes

the book from the enemy's side, giving only glimpses of his

countrymen who are presented as the antagonists. The book is

not a historical novel, though it borrows from the Siege of

Shkoder of 1474 which incidentally happened after the death of

    the antagonist, George Kastrioti.

Written at a time when Albania was threatened by the overreach

of the Soviet military, the book came with a latent intent. There

are many passages that emulate the Soviet system, set in an

Ottoman manner. It was a reminder of the time when Albanians

had resisted a mightier foe for nearly four decades.

But it was also a reminder that the resistance was eventually

    futile.
