Ranch Camp 2011 by Mrs. Sommer

For several months now, our staff has been engaged in deliberations about Ranch Camp.taken place at School Council. Scontinue to take students to Ranch Camp at this time, however the purpose of Ranch Camp was discussed at length. We debated the value of building leaderskills (sending Grade 5s) versus a reward and culminating elementary activity (sending Grade 6s). In the end we agreed that building leadership skills and becoming more intentional in teaching those skills to students was the direction we wanted to gothat starting this year, in June 2011, we would take only Grade 5 students to Ranch Camp. Further leadership skill development will be built with those same students when they are Grade 6s the following September. A different year-end fieldtrip will be planned for Grade 6 students in June and we will continue to honor Grade 6 students with a Farewell Luncheon.

Help Jack Stuart bring Family Literacy Alive!by Mrs. Vikse

January 27th is National Family Literacy Day, the theme for 2011 is “Play for Literacy:” way to encourage literacy and numeracy skills through the use of all types board games, card games and word games. Jack Stuart School is committed to promoting and enhancing literacy skill for all of our students, and as such the entire school has dedicate the afternoon of the 27th to allow students K-6 to take part in a number of fun activities focused on literacy.

In order to promote “family” literacy, we are asking adult family members that are willing and able, to come to the school and read a story or two to a class or small groups of students. Family members include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older adult cousins. Family rea12:40-1:15. Attention Bus Students!!! by Brenda Johnson, BRSD #31, Director of Transportation

Since many of our school buses are running quite full, we ask that you ensure that all bases are covered before having an extra rider such as a friend accompany your child home. The bus driver will need advance notice of any extra riders so that they can determine that the bus will not be overcrowded. Drivers are usually aware of students who may not be riding and whether or not extra riders can be accommodated. Mrs. Sommer’s Notes:

KLASSICS FOR KIDS

BRSD is entering into some exciting partnerships with Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. One of the ventures is an outreach to local elementary schools. Klassics for Kids Koncerts are intended to increase awareness of and exposure to fine arts. On January 25th 2011, a number of music instructors will be performing two children’s concerts for all Camrose BRSD students, kindergarten to Grade 4. BRSD is supporting this endeavor financially by covering the cost of busing for over 700 students and staff. Participants are being charged a nominal fee of $3.00 each to help Augustana cover the costs of the music instructors as well as lighting and sound for the performances. We are excited to be invited and Augustana is excited to be hosting. It is a phenomenal opportunity for our students and we hope it is the beginning of an ongoing relationship with Augustana and many more Klassics for Kids Koncerts.

PARKING & TRAFFIC WOES

This snowy winter weather raises extra safety concerns for students crossing streets. They are bundled up and can’t see as well. In addition, vehicles have visibility problems too. Students crossing streets are not always looking for oncoming traffic • Remind you children to stop and look both ways when

they are crossing a street. • DO NOT PARK ACROSS THE STREET FROM

THE SCHOOL. This is a NO PARKING zone. We have some parents parking there and calling for their children to cross the street where there is no crosswalk. VERY DANGEROUS!

• Thanks to the many parents and caregivers who are helping to “Take care of others” and “Take care of this place” by parking in the appropriate areas. Unfortunately there are some who are choosing not to do so. Your children are of utmost importance to us. Please help us to keep them safe.

• PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS ZONE IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS! We have buses arriving at various times throughout the day. The bus zone is clearly marked. Even if you are popping in for a few minutes, please park outside of the bus zone.

• The school parking lot is designated for staff use only. Please respect us and the rules of the school. DO NOT PARK OR DROP OFF STUDENTS IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT . We have had some close calls that have put both students and staff at risk.

SAFETY IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN ; your support and cooperation are needed. We count on your respect for everyone by observing the rules of the school. Thank you.
