Organise all the photos into one file in the order you wish to use them. If there is a lot of text prepare that in MS Word (or similar) beforehand. Decide what size you wish your finished book to be. By week 8 the plan is to have completed/sent our books for printing and in week 10 share the results. Although we will be using Blurb there will be opportunities to explore other programs especially in week 9. Enquiries to Marian: [email protected]

Monday 10:00 – 11:00 A4 Shakespeare’s Hamlet Helen Potgieter A young Prince meets with his father’s ghost who alleges that his own brother, now married to his widow, murdered him. The Prince devises a scheme to test the truth of this accusation, feigning wild madness while plotting his revenge. For over three hundred years Hamlet has been the most popular but most puzzling of Shakespeare’s plays. With discussion and group participation there will be something for you whether you are familiar with the play or encountering the Prince of Denmark for the first time. Helen Potgieter has been a member of U3A for 10 years and has enjoyed leading tutorial groups exploring the ideas and the performance of Shakespeare’s immortal plays.

Monday 10:00 – 12:00 A3 Mah Jong Gregory Thé Here is your chance to play or learn how to play the amazing ancient Chinese game of Mah Jong. This course will introduce you to the way it is still played in China, the country of its origin, though it is popular around the world. And now it's here in Kingston! If you have a Mah Jong set you can bring along that would be really useful. Don't be put off if you don't have your own set as there are some sets available for the class. Gregory Thé was a teaching and research staff member of the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Tasmania since 1965. He retired in 1997 and has since been an active tutor at Hobart, Kingston and Rosny U3As, teaching Indonesian, Indonesian history, Today’s World of Electronics and Electrical Devices, Russian Revolution and Spanish Civil War.

Monday 11:30 – 12:30 A4 Book Chat Jenny Vickery Why don’t you come and join the U3A Book Chat? We talk about a wide range of books from the popular to the classics. During the term we concentrate on a particular subject, book or author, which we decide on at the beginning of the term. Also in the first couple of weeks of the term we chat about books we have read during the summer recess and get to know each other. If you really love reading whatever genre please come and join us. We’d love to see you.

Monday 11:30 – 12:30 A1 Kaleidoscope – Don’t be an Ostrich Chair: Venie Phillips The ten sessions will focus on 'things we'd rather not think about but need to know'. Topics will include: aged-care support & ACAT, hearing loss, retirement villages, dementia, body donation, arranging one's own funeral, strokes and age-relevant legal issues. Each session will be of one-hour's duration, with time available for discussion and questions.

Monday 1:00 – 2:30 A1 Mae’r Cymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy! – Beginners Peter Ball Welsh is numerically the strongest and liveliest of the existing Celtic languages and these sessions introduce the spoken language of today, with light relief from music, video, etc about Welsh culture. We shall use methods and materials similar to the "Wlpan" courses for adults which are popular throughout Wales. New students are welcome to contact Peter (Ph. 6239 1265, email [email protected]) before enrolling, and are encouraged to prepare at home, using a free Internet course, “Say Something in Welsh” (www.saysomethinginwelsh.com) which keeps the learner speaking informal everyday Welsh and developing confidence right from the very start. Peter, from Bristol, had a Welsh father and English mother. He studied psychology in Hull and Belfast before lecturing in Uganda, and then specialised in social psychology, psycholinguistics and related fields at the University of Tasmania. He enjoys choral singing, art and everything about language.

Monday 1:30 – 2:30 A3 Life on Earth David Leaman David’s description of the course is: “ MY version of the history of life including philosophical issues. More detailed than Fortey’s version, more accurate than Attenborough (if not as well illustrated).” David is well known and a popular tutor at U3A. He is an eminent geologist, geophysicist and ground water specialist. His many other interests include railways, history and music. He has written several books.

Monday 2:30 – 4:30 A1 and A2 Welsh Continuation Guy and Margaret Nicholson This course is aimed at those who have completed a beginners’ course or have some proficiency in Welsh and want to improve their command of spoken Welsh. There will be an opportunity for class members to speak about various topics in Welsh and to engage in conversation. A range of contemporary resources will be provided and some time will be devoted to grammar each week. Articles from the adult learners’ magazine, Lingo Newydd will be used regularly for reading and discussion. There will also be some focus on listening to and singing Welsh songs. Margaret comes from Anglesey in North Wales and is a native speaker of Welsh. Marg’s strength is colloquial Welsh and she is keen to help students with pronunciation and support them in developing confidence in speaking the language. Guy has a teaching background and has learned to communicate in Welsh over a number of years.

Tuesday 9:00 Field Bushwalking Tas Boskell The walks, of 7 to 15kms, will be on established tracks and trails about the uplands and coasts around Hobart and occasionally further afield. Duration will be 3 to 5 hours. Participants must have a reasonable fitness level. Please bring your lunch, water and a first aid kit. The meeting place for all walks is the Denison Street car park. Be there in time to leave at 9:00am. New members to this group please phone Tas Boskell on 6229 2506 prior to the start of term.

Then we time travel through Tasmania, which we see through the eyes of five generations of the same family. Finally, we share some of the bizarre experiences of an academic who keeps changing universities; he then takes a look at today's universities to see if they show any improvement. John Biggs is a fifth generation Tasmanian but spent his professional life in various universities across the world. He retired from the University of Hong Kong some years ago, returning to Tasmania to start a career as a writer.

Tuesday 10:00 – 11:00 A2 Have Your Say Jennie Clarke This lively group has been successful for many years. The members, seated in a circle, discuss a wide range of subjects that surround our every-day lives. Topics range from politics, world events, science, humanities and religion; you name it. Sometimes controversial, the rules are maintained with respect for others' opinions and challenging discussion is encouraged. Each participant has an opportunity to speak without being interrupted, as well as expressing any discomfort about others' opinions. Confidentiality within the group assures members that their opinion stays in the room, thus allowing them to speak freely on the issues involved. Jennie co-ordinates this group and she aims to make sure that everyone sticks to the rules and has their say. Jennie has been a member of U3A for six years and before retirement was a nurse, communications group leader and a marriage guidance counsellor.

Tuesday 10:00 – 11:00 A3 Imagining the Orient Basil Sansom Derived from visions vouchsafed by famous figures, lectures include: Mohammed’s Revelations; Ibn Khalduun on Arab histories; Runciman’s Crusaders; David Roberts and Mark Twain on Biblical Geography; Burton’s Mecca and Arabian Nights; T.E. Lawrence and Arabia Felix; Wittfogel and Geertz on Oriental Despotism; Frank Dalby Davidson – Anzacs at Beersheba; Edward Said’s Orientalism. Basil is an anthropologist who has worked in Africa, the Middle East and Aboriginal Australia. He recently won the annual Anthropological Society of Australia best essay prize.

Tuesday 11:30 – 12:30 on 11th March A1 Menuhin – Prodigy and Phenomenon Phillip Bailey Week 1 starts with Philip Bailey. Philip worked in various capacities for renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin over a period of twenty-two years and has recently published a two-part Menuhin biography. Lectures by Philip are described as ‘lively events, and include DVD film clips, slides and a rare CD recording.

Tuesday 11:30 – 12:30 weeks 2-10 A1 This is Your Life (a different life each week) Chair: Marian Hearn Weeks 2-10 will feature different members of U3A and the occasional tutor being interviewed about their life. Each one has a story to tell. This will be a combination of ‘Who do you think you are’, ‘Desert Island Disks’, and ‘Conversations’ (unfortunately without Richard Fidler!) Chaired by Marian Hearn, who has spent years researching family history and writing down the stories of family members (before it was too late!)

Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 A2 Writing Theory Jennie Clarke This class will be one term only, and will cover creative writing theory, sharing work and self-editing, 10-minute exercises and theory homework. The course will be complete in itself; concentrated and hard work, for those who would really like to refine their work and consider short stories, a novel or auto/biography. Jennie prefers to work with a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperienced members, who just have a yearning to write. She began writing only eight years ago, has written two books and will use the skills of the experts to maximise her tuition.

Tuesday 1:30 – 2:30 (5 weeks only, 11th March to 8th April) A1 Introduction to Identifying Tasmanian Birds Andrew Walker The course assumes only a basic knowledge of Tasmania’s wildlife and habitats. The equipment and information sources for bird watching will be introduced together with a basic description of the key parts of a bird that are used in identification. A systematic method for identifying birds will be described. Using these guides, a selection of Tasmanian birds will be “identified” based in turn on bird types (families), on locations (eg gardens), and on habitats (eg coastal birds). Some topics of interest about birds will also be discussed, including the origin of Tasmania’s birds, the naming of birds, bird feeding, some bird behaviours, and the conservation of birds. Opportunities for practising the identification of birds will be discussed (including a nearby walk with the presenter), however specific outings for identifying birds will not be a part of the course. Andrew is a keen amateur birdwatcher who has worked and travelled to many parts of Australia and has seen a large selection of the country’s birds, including Tasmanian birds. He sees the identification of birds as a way of stimulating his curiosity about nature and landscapes which has led to further interests. Now retired and living in Blackmans Bay, Andrew has worked mostly in the resources industry, including on Tasmania’s West Coast, in the geological, environmental and OHS areas.

Tuesday 2:30 – 4:00 A2 Creative and Journalistic/Article Writing Jennie Clarke This class will cover 10-minute exercises, brief creative/journalistic/article/letter writing theory and sharing written homework. Members will have a choice of concentrating on any or all of the styles. Jennie prefers to work with a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperienced members, who just have a yearning to write. She began writing only eight years ago, has written two books and will use the skills of the experts to maximise her tuition.

Wednesday 10:00 – 1:00 Field Ramblers and Strollers Marcus Higgs Class Limit: 20 Join us for easy 1½ to 2-hour walks enjoying nature and fresh air on local and rural tracks and trails for an invigorating, healthy, social activity, ending in a welcome cuppa nearby. Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 A3 Listen to Music John Culliton We’re back! After a break of six months, U3A Kingborough’s music program returns. Same equipment, same chairs, same presenter, but the Music …. ah the Music. Do you need an hour of inspiration? An hour of reflection? An hour of simple enjoyment? Perhaps the sound of something familiar, maybe something comfortable, occasionally something new to challenge your musical tastebuds. Many of us enjoy our listening solo, but joining a group to share the experience adds a dimension and it’s been going on for an awfully long time – in fact, since music began. Our informal group gathers on Thursdays. Be a regular, or join us when you need an hour of inspiration.

Thursday 11:30 – 12:30 A1 The Painted Zoo: the Animal Kingdom in Art Wendy Pearson Come for a tour around the zoological gardens of art and discover the amazing variety of creatures great and small depicted in art, from prehistoric times to the present. There will be wild animals, beasts of burden, beloved pets, the birds and the bees, domesticated animals and much more in this survey of the animal kingdom in art. Wendy is a retired librarian and for most of her career she worked at the University of Tasmania Library. She has always had an interest in art and studied art theory and history at the Centre of the Arts in Hobart. She began presenting art appreciation courses at U3A in 2010 and for her latest topic she has chosen to look at the animal kingdom in art.

Thursday 11:30 – 12:30 A2 U3A Kingborough’s Own Eggheads Glenn Pullen Class Limit: 20 A general knowledge quiz. Everyone joins in. No prizes; just glory and fun. Whose brain is most cluttered with the biggest collection of random and basically useless information? Bring a pen.

Thursday 1:30 – 3:00 A1 Films on Thursday Marcus Higgs then Margot Wells We will continue screening the intriguing spy drama Riley – Ace of Spies, starring the cool Sam Neil. We pick up the series at episode six and newcomers are most welcome to join.

Thursday 1:30 – 2:30 A2 Poetry for Pleasure Maggie McCabe Do you enjoy reading and listening to poetry? Then this might be for you. Lovers of poetry come together each week to read, hear and share their favourite poems in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps you might have an original piece that you might like to share with the group? The first week’s theme will be Nature. Please bring along one or three shortish poems. They may be serious, funny, or whimsical but do come and enjoy!

Thursday 1:30 – 2:30 (5 weeks only 13th March to 10th April) A3 Myth, Mystery and Popular Misconceptions Anthony Boden In this course, we shall be taking on the difficult ones. We will be examining some of those topics which a) have never been fully explained, b) have been subject to misinterpretation, or c) have been treated uncritically, owing to an abundance of mis-placed enthusiasm. The topics are, in order of appearance, the following: Jason and the Argonauts, Jesus of Nazareth, Atlantis, Thermopylae and Magna Graecia (the land of opportunity for the Ancient Greeks). So, if you are partial to a myth – or a mystery, and do not object to having your dreams and misconceptions mercilessly scrutinized, then this course is definitely for you.

U3A  Kingborough:  3  or  4  terms  -‐  What  do  you  think?

The  U3A  Committee  has  been  considering  a  possible  change  to  Four  Terms  (roughly  in  line  with  the  four  school  terms,  though  with  longer  breaks)  or  retaining  the  current  Three  Terms  plus  Summer  School.  (Hobart  and  Clarence  are  staying  with  three  terms;  Glenorchy  have  changed  to  four,  mandated  by  the  fact  that  they  use  Cosgrove  High  school  as  their  home).

The  current  Three  Term  year  (with  Summer  School)  means  three  ten  week  terms  plus  five  for  Summer  School,  a  total  of  35  weeks;  the  Four  Term  year  would  mean  4  eight  week  terms,  a  total  of  32  weeks.    Further  details  are  below.

Any change would not come into effect until 2015. ____________________________________________________________________________ If  it  were  for  2014  (we  could  not  actually  start  till  2015  but  dates  would  be  similar)

4  Terms  x  8  weeks   3  Terms  x  10  weeks,  plus  5  week  Summer  School

Term  1  (Summer)  10  Feb  –  4  Apr  (8  weeks)  then  a  4  week  break,  including  Easter  (18  –  22  April)

(School  holidays  18  April  –  4  May)

Term  2  (Autumn)  5  May  –  27  June  (8  weeks)  then  a  4  week  break

(School  holidays  5  July  –  20  July)

Term  3  (Winter)  28  July  –  19  Sept  (8  weeks)  then  a  3  week  break

(School  holidays  27  Sept  to  12  Oct)

Term  4  (Spring)  13  Oct  –  5  Dec  (8  weeks)

(School  holidays  19  Dec  –  4  Feb  .)

9  week  break  between  Term  4  and  Term  1  of  the  next  year

  Summer  School  13  Jan    -‐  14  Feb.  (5  weeks)  then  a  3    week  break

Term  1  (Autumn)  10  Mar  –  23  May  (11  weeks  –  includes  Easter  Break)  then  a  3  week  break

Term  2  (Winter)  16  Jun  –  22  Aug  (10  weeks)  then  a  3  week  break

Term  3  (Spring)  15-‐Sep  -‐  21-‐Nov  (10  weeks)

7  week  break  until  Summer  School  (or  15  weeks  from  Term  3  until  Term  1  of  the  next  year)

________________________________________________________________________ My  preference  is  that  U3A  Kingborough

Continues  with  3  terms  and  a  Summer  School  [YES] [NO]

Changes  to  4  terms  [YES] [NO]

COURSE REPRESENTATIVES

Have you considered becoming a Course Rep.? It is a really useful way to contribute to the smooth running of our U3A. If you could help out, please complete and return the form and join us at the Tutor’s Morning Tea on Tuesday 18th February.

ENROLMENTS You can enrol in as many courses as you like. Please use a separate enrolment form for each person. Doubling up often causes confusion. Assume your enrolment has been accepted UNLESS WE NOTIFY YOU OTHERWISE. Please do us the courtesy of enrolling each term, not just turning up. Then we don’t have to consider cancelling classes through perceived lack of interest or have the embarrassment of not being able to accommodate numbers. You may join other courses during the term as long as there is space. If you do, please make sure that your name is added to the Course Reps sheet. Please keep a record of the courses you have enrolled in, perhaps using the ‘At a Glance’ (page 4) from the newsletter! NEW MEMBERS We do not issue receipts, except for payment in person on enrolment day. A new badge is issued each year. We encourage you to wear it – and even add an emergency contact number on the back. New badges should be in the box in the hallway. If yours is not there, please leave your name on the paper next to it. We do periodic print runs.

Have you thought about downloading your newsletter from our U3A website? A considerable amount of time is spent by volunteers folding and preparing your newsletter for posting. If you require a Membership or Enrolment form please ask a committee member for a copy.

U3A Kingborough wishes to thank Catryna Bilyk, Senator for Tasmania, for her generous

support in the production of this newsletter.
