A Message to Barack ObamaIt is Time to End the Cuban Embargo

By Charlie Ara

Dear President Obama:

It is our hope that one of your first acts as President of the Unites States will be to end the decades-old embargo on Cuba. It is our opinion that this embargo has outlived its time and is counter-productive. It hurts the people of Cuba, rather than the Castro government. It would surely have been replaced by now with a more viable policy except for the fact that George W. Bush threatened to veto any legislation that altered the status quo.

It is time to heed the calls of Canadian and European governments, the Unites Nations General Assembly, and many religious bodies for a change in our Cuban policy. Now is the time to end the suffering it has caused for the men, women and children of Cuba.

In addition, our economic interests would be furthered should trade be resumed. We enjoy the benefits of commerce with such communist countries as China and Russia, so the time to isolate and boycott communist regimes is obviously an outdated strategy. In fact, an increase in communication and business is sure to foster the desire and implementation of increased freedom and human rights in Cuba.

Congratulations on your election and inauguration. We Democratic activists are enthusiastically looking forward to all the changes for the better you and your administration will be making for us and our country.

Going Green with Norma and Alan

The Green Car of the Future is HERE!

by Norma and Alan Williamson, HHHDC Members

Without much fanfare or media coverage, Tesla Motors, (CEO Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal and CEO of SpaceX) has quietly delivered it’s 100th zero emissions, all-electric sports car to its 100th celebrity type customer in December, 2008. Governor Schwarzenegger, Chris Paine (film director of “Who Killed the Electric Car?”) and actor George Clooney are among the first lucky few who have been able to afford its $98,000 price tag.

This sleek, handsome sports car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and demonstrates that a high performance automobile can be environmentally friendly and be a powerful tool to combat global climate change. It travels up to 250 miles on a single charge, which is made possible by its lithium ion batteries.

With their purchases, these electric vehicle aficionados are helping to usher in a new age for transportation: “These early customers are pioneers, helping lay a foundation that will make electric cars possible for everyone — enabling Tesla Motors to develop future models at price points that eventually work for every budget” from a Tesla Motors Press Release:

http://www.teslamotors.com/media/press_room.php?id=29

If you’d like to support the growth of the zero emissions, electric vehicles movement, come to the “Inaugural Parade West” sponsored by Plug in America on Saturday, January 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Santa Monica Civic Center. Vehicle #23, purchased by Ms. Linda Nicholes, President of Plug in America, will lead the parade. And if you catch her after the parade, she assured us that she’d be happy to give a demonstration ride to any of our HHHDC members. (Visit www.pluginamerica.org for more details and a map).

Madera Unified case is changing elections throughout California

The heavily Latino district's voting system made it hard for Latinos to win school board seats. A judge ruled it violated the state Voting Rights Act. Other cities are taking note. - By Mitchell Landsberg - January 4, 2009

Reporting from Madera, Calif. -- You would never mistake Jesse Lopez Jr. for a revolutionary. Soft-spoken, with a shy smile beneath his gray mustache, the retired school custodian and amateur mariachi singer hardly seems like an instigator.

Yet if Latinos come to dominate California politics someday, Lopez will have helped make it happen.Lopez was one of three plaintiffs in a lawsuit earlier this year against the Madera Unified School District aimed at greater Latino participation on the school board in the San Joaquin Valley town.

An injunction in the case is forcing Madera Unified, which is 82% Latino, to change the way it elects its board.

The decision has already begun to reshape school boards, city councils and special districts throughout California. …
