First Sunday after the Epiphany The Baptism of Our Lord
January 10 & 11, 2021
Today’s Focus: Christ's Baptism and Our Baptism At the baptism of Jesus, we see all three members of
the Trinity. The Son is being baptized. The Holy Spirit came from heaven like a dove. The Father spoke from
heaven, "You are my Son, whom I love" (Gospel). All three persons of the Trinity were there also at our bap-
tism. We were connected to Jesus. The Holy Spirit created or strengthened faith in our hearts. The Father
adopted us as his children. The baptism of Jesus makes us think of our baptism.
Opening Hymn “Christ, Your Footprints through the Desert” CWS 709 (pg. 10) Please stand to sing stanza 4.
Liturgy Divine Service I
Invocation M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Confession & Absolution M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking
him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my
thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I de-
serve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in
my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Welcome to worship today at St. John’s! May God bless you through his Word of grace and give you the peace and joy
that come only from Jesus.
Guests, we ask that you would do us the honor of signing our Guest Book, found on the kiosk in the church entryway.
Bathrooms are located in the church entryway to the left as you exit the sanctuary.
Nursery / cry room is located in the room (with the large glass windows) to the right as you exit the sanctuary.
Large print materials are available from the ushers.
Hearing Loop technology is installed in the sanctuary. Hearing aids can be tuned to pick up the church audio signal. A
hearing device headset is also available from the ushers.
Gluten-Free Communion Wafers are available upon request. Please notify an usher or one of the pastors before the
service if you require one.
Service Modifications due to COVID-19 are being taken: Pews are marked for certain service times to allow for social
distancing. Please sit in the appropriate pew for the service you are attending. The offering will not be taken during
the service, but offering plates will be available at the doors following the services. Service dismissal will begin at
the back pews rather than the front. FOR HOLY COMMUNION: Communicants will stand rather than kneel at the
rail. The Body of Christ will be received on the hand and the Blood of Christ will be received by individual cup. The
right table of communicants will return to their pews via the center aisle first; the left table will wait to return to
their pews after the right side has left the rail.

Kyrie
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacri-
fice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your
sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Prayer of the Day M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
M: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your
beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in
our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

First Lesson Psalm 2 1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the
rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 3 “Let us break their chains and throw
off their shackles.” 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 He rebukes them in his anger and
terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8
Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break
them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear and
celebrate his rule with trembling. 12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your
destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 2 Pg. 11 The congregation sings the psalm in unison.

Second Lesson Acts 16:25-34 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners
were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison
were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up,
and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought
the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought
them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then
they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer
took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer
brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to be-
lieve in God—he and his whole household.
Verse of the Day M: Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love;
C: With you I am well pleased. Alleluia.

Gospel Mark 1:4-11 M: The Holy Gospel is written in St. Mark chapter one.
4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the for-
giveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing
their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a
leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes
the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I bap-
tize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as
Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a
dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and
unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from
God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Fa-
ther. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heav-
en, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he
rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his king-
dom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church and The Lord’s Prayer M: O God of all mercy, through the sacrament of holy baptism you adopted us as your dear children for
time and eternity. You made your own Son our brother and Savior. You promised us a place in your
eternal mansions. You give us boldness to pray:
C: Our Father, who art in heaven.
M: You baptized us into your name and consecrated us to a life with you and for you. Therefore, set us
apart as your chosen people so that we may proclaim your gracious name among us.
C: Hallowed by thy Name.
M: Through baptism you brought us out of the dark kingdom of unbelief, sin, and death and brought us
into Christ’s kingdom of forgiveness, light, and life. Therefore, we ask that you would keep us in our
baptismal grace and in your kingdom all the days of our life.
C: Thy Kingdom come.
M: In baptism you accomplished your desire to save us. You released us from the control of Satan and
bound us to follow your ways of truth and life now and forever. Convert all our desires so that we
always seek and follow what you desire.
C: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
M: In baptism you gave us your Holy Spirit and filled us with a confident trust in your abundant provi-
dence. Therefore, that we may receive from you all we need for body and life, we pray:
C: Give us this day our daily bread.
M: We praise you that in baptism you freely washed away all our sins by the blood of your Son, Jesus
Christ. Work powerfully in us so that we, too, forgive others as gladly and as abundantly as you have
forgiven us.
C: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
M: Graciously preserve us from all danger, doubt, and fear. Guard us from Satan’s schemes, so that we
never abandon our baptism but use it faithfully day by day.
C: Lead us not into temptation.
M: In holy baptism you sanctified our bodies and made them the temple of your Holy Spirit. Watch over
our bodies so that no wickedness may come upon us.
C: But deliver us from evil.
M: Accept our praise and worship now and forever through the faith and trust that you gave to us in the
sacrament of rebirth and renewal.
C: For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Preface M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up to the Lord.
M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
C: It is good and right so to do.
M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy
Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a hu-
man being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore with all the
saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:
Sanctus
Words of Institution
M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he
broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do
this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying “Drink from it, all of you; this is my
blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever
you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: Amen.
