Om Gurave Namah

Preface

Vedic astrology has been viewed by some scholars as poly-paradigmatic, comprising of a multitude of unique schools employing different hypothesis and independent tools for analysis. Thus, the Parasarian system is viewed as grossly different from that of Jaimini, Brighu or the Tajaka writers (Neelkanthi) or even the Nadi’s (Satyanadi etc.). Consequently much of the literature has either not surfaced for fear of unwanted criticism of if surfaced, is languishing for want of serious research as scholars view the literature as “inferior” to their system. Fortunately, due to the efforts of some brilliant scholars Vedic astrology has come a long way from its dark days. However, to make further progress, this science should be viewed in a right unified perspective where the various systems are actually parts of the whole (Vedic astrology). The original Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra has been surfacing in bits and pieces and this is evident in every new publication, which has a few more stanzas or even chapters than the previous ones. Thus it is evident that the original text must have been far more voluminous that what is available now and would have had the essence of all the systems or sub-systems of astrology currently practiced in the Indian subcontinent, and not excluding the astrological knowledge that migrated to China or other parts of Asia with the monks (Buddhist, Jain etc.). The Upadesa Sutras (Advisory stanzas) popularly called the Jaimini Sutras were originally in eight chapters of four quarters each and, as the name implies, were meant to supplement the standard texts like Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra etc. Maharishi Jaimini was a student of Sri Vyasa who was the son of Parasara. Therefore, Jaimini must

v

Page 6: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

maharÿi jaimini’s upadeþa s¨tra

have been trained in traditional Vedic astrology and has given these Upadesa Sutras to bring out the finer points of astrology. Thus, many areas like Chara and Sthira karakas (temporary fixed significators) that find a fleeting reference in the standard texts are explained in detail. Similarly, while Jaimini has dealt with seventy Phalita dasa’s and fourteen Ayur dasa he has generally avoided the constellation-based dasa (excepting Lagna Kendradi Rasi Dasa or Sudasa) asking the reader to refer to standard texts. (I have explained as many dasa’s as possible in this translation and a detailed exposition will require a separate book). Again, Jaimini asks the reader to refer to standard texts for the divisional charts while explaining only those like Saptamsa, Rudramsa, Shastamsa etc which do not find adequate coverage elsewhere. My interpretation is based on my learning and any error is attributable only to my own inattentiveness, for which, the erudite readers may kindly enlighten me. In the determination of (monthly) significators for the period of gestation, most standard texts give the natural significators Jaimini gives the fixed significators besides adding a novel method of timing events during pregnancy. Even the use of Varnada Lagna in the epoch chart is meant to supplement standard texts. These can also be successfully used in horary charts or the natal saptamsa chart D-7) of the parents. Perhaps the only area where he has differed is the delineation of body parts. By explaining in detail the use of such sensitive special ascendant like the Hora Lagna etc, Jaimini has taken Vedic astrology to unprecedented heights, which no serious scholar can afford to miss. For example, it is traditionally known that the second Lord in the twelfth house is a specific combination for poverty and it is found in the chart of Queen Victoria! However, Jaimini teaches that the Varnada Lagna in the second house is good for power and position. This is found in the chart of

vi

Page 7: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Preface

the Queen and the results of “second Lord in twelfth house” get modified to “Lord of Varnada Lagna in the eleventh house from it” thereby resulting in a Dhanyoga (wealth & prosperity). The traditionalists view of Vedic astrology as a unified whole is advocated and to the extent feasible I have given quotes from standard texts.

While a flawless commentary by the brilliant Neelkanth is a available on the first two chapters the third chapter, at least in the available Sanskrit works, is in an uncorrelated manner showing that in the process of transfer by word of mouth some order was lost. These have been arranged (only in Chapter III quarter3) based on my learning and it is possible that those who are more erudite will like to advise me further on this. I shall be most obliged for their valuable suggestions. While this book should suffice, research scholars can consult the bibliography for further reading. I do not claim that the Jaimini Sutras are complete as the last four chapters are not available and will have to be added subsequently, if at all they are traced. While reading these stanzas the readers cautioned against taking a hard line attitude without actually trying out their applicability. Again, there should be no fixation for names as ‘Chara dasa’ is quite different from ‘Chara Paryaya dasa’ etc.

Jaimini has explained a novel method of determining the sex of the child based on the Vighati (Birth time) from Sunrise or Sunset and this can be used for rectifying horoscopes. Instead of going into all the important combination, which are available in standard texts, Jaimini has just explained a few. The explanation of the Shakti Yoga gives a new insight into understanding these combinations.Explanatory notes and illustration have been provided to bring out the applicability of the stanzas which has been

vii

specifically referred to in the explanation to charts. It is hoped that this work meets the expectations of the learned astrologers.

Words would not suffice to appreciate the efforts and inspiration provided by close elder astrologers. Vedic astrology is indebted to the Sagar family for patronizing publication of various books over the past few generations now and I express my gratitude to Sri Narinder Sagar for his advise and expertise in the publication of this book. God willing, we should be able to throw more light on Vedic Astrology in the future as well.

I prostrate at the Lotus feet of Sri Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu of Puri (Orissa), my Guru’s and my parents for their blessings.

Translation[Paying obeisance’s to Sri Maha Vishnu], the explanatory verses (that will from the key in deciphering the Jaimini Sutras) are being initiated.

Purport1. All ancient Sanskrit works were always initiated with a

benedictory address and in this stanzas, the sage pays obeisance at the feet of Sri Vishnu (‘U’ is the middle letter of ‘AUM’, `) for the benefit of humanity.

2. At the outset, the reader is cautioned that the Jaimini Sutras are often couched with multiple meaning and at places; the best of commentators have held divergent opinions. Thus, ‘Upadesam’ is also read as ‘U’+‘Pade’+‘Sam’ where ‘U’ represents Sri Vishnu, ‘Pade’ means ‘feet’ and ‘Sam’ means ‘for general welfare.’

3. Jaimini has used the Katapayadi Varga system of Vedic Numerology for coding the number of the

Page 13: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

houses and signs within words. Unless the reader is familiar with this system of Vedic Numerology, it will not be possible to decode and decipher the Stanza in this classic work.

Purport1. The Zodiacal diagram referred to is currently in vogue

in South India. From Aries, every fourth sign is sequentially, movable, fixed or dual. A movable sign is aspected by and aspects all fixed signs expect the one juxtapose. A fixed sign is aspected by and aspects all movable signs expect the one juxtapose. The dual signs aspect each other. Table 1.1.3 provides a ready reckoner for sign aspect while the same is schematically represented in fig I.3

2 A simpler memory aide is that the facial aspect is always to a sign also owned by its Lords expect in the case of luminaries and Saturn. Thus, Pisces and Sagittarius render facial aspect to each other as both are ruled by Jupiter. The exceptions are the Leo-Capricorn and Cancer-Aquarius pair. All these pairs are also called ‘sammukha rasi’.

TranslationThe aspect of the planets is the same as the signs they are stationed in.

PurportReader would be aware of the natural aspect of planets employed in Vedic astrology. These aspects are called Grahadristi or planetary sight. According to the present stanza the planets tend to aspect as per their sign position. Thus, a Jupiter in Pisces will aspect Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius. This is Rasi Drishti or Signs sight and is not unique to the Jaimini School as has been made out. Parasara has also given a detailed exposition of Rasi drishti in his monumental classic Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra.

Argala is the intervention brought about by signs and/or planets in the 2nd, 4th or 11th from a sign (or planet). This intervention tends to promote the affairs ruled by the sign (or planet) by fair or foul means depending on the nature of the signs and planets involved. This intervention in the 2nd, 4th or 11th house is obstructed by the signs (or planets) in the 12th, 10th or 3rd house respectively. The rider at stanza 1.1.5. implies that malefics in the third house, while simultaneously obstructing the intervention in the 11th house, also themselves cause argala (or intervene).

TranslationThe planet which obtains the highest longitude (irrespective of signs) is the atmakaraka (soul) in the seven or eight planet charakaraka (temporal signifactor) scheme.

PurportThe stanza 1.1.10-9 explains the scheme of temporary significators (naisargika Karaka). Karaka means doer or significator and ‘atma’ means the ‘soul’. Thus the atmakaraka represents the ‘soul’ of the horoscope. There are two schemes in determining Charakaraka. One that considers the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and

Page 18: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

the other that includes Rahu. Jaimini has accepted the existence of both scheme but has recommended the eight planet scheme.

Again, in the eight planet scheme, some astrologers hold that the longitude of Rahu alone should be reckoned from the end of the sign it occupies, while others consider this for all retrograde planets.

Parasara accept the existence of two schools of taught using the seven and eight planets for temporary signification (charakaraka). While those advocating the seven planet scheme bring in Rahu only when two planets obtain the same longitude (irrespective of signs), others always include Rahu in the eight planet charakaraka scheme.

The planet with the highest longitude (degrees) in a sign qualifies for the ˜tmakaraka. If the degrees of two planets are identical, then the minutes, and if the minutes are identical, then the seconds of arc traversed should be considered for declaring the ˜tmakaraka. (This tussle for Karakatwa could occu r among the lower significator as well i.e. two or more planets could contend for the BhratrukarakI or other signification. In all such cases the comparison should be made upto the seconds of arc). The planet which fails to qualify are also called Antyakarak, Madhyakheta or upakheta. The longitude of Rahu is reckoned from the end of the sign i.e. 30o minus actual longitude.

As regards the number of planets to be used, both Parasara and Jaimini have used the Eight Planet Scheme and this is advised.

Just like a king the ˜tmakaraka, has a preeminent position (vis-à-vis other karaka planets) in the horoscope. Like the activities of men., the ˜tmakaraka should be in agreement for success in every activity. The results, benefic or malefic, will largely depend on the ˜tmakaraka. If the other planets forbode evil and the ˜tmakaraka favourable, the intensity of the evil in greatly reduced. Similarly if the other planets indicate excellent results and the ˜tmakaraka in unfavourable, success is elusive and negative results well be felt.

TranslationThe planet obtaining the next (eighth) highest longitude (i.e. the lowest longitude) is called the d˜r˜k˜raka (spouse).

PurportIt is evident from Stanza 1.1.10-18 that Jaimini also favored the eight planet carak˜raka scheme like his illustrious predecessor Parasara. In the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, after indicating the eight Karakas, Parasara adds ‘maatRkarkmaovaa|nyao vadint sautkarkama\’ i.e. some (other) astrologers use the seven planet carak˜raka scheme where the Matrukarak and Putrakaraka. Are one and the same. Thus, they avoid Rahu and the Putrakaraka. The implication is that neither of the two great savants of Vedic Astrology agreed to this seven planet scheme. So, this may be dispensed with.

If two planets attain the same longitude, then they become the Karaka jointly i.e. both are to be examined for purpose of signification. The next slot falls vacant and is to be filled by the natural significator. For example, if after the bhrat®k˜raka (Co-born), two planets attain the same longitude, they both become m˜t®k˜raka (Mothers). The next slot of pit®k˜raka (Father) falls vacant and is to be studied from the natural significator for father i.e. the Sun. if instead, three planets having the same longitude became m˜t®k˜raka (Mothers), the next two slots of pit®k˜raka (father) and putrak˜raka (son) would fall vacant and Sun and Jupiter respectively would have to take these places, being the natural significators.

These are not the natural significators for general readings and are used for ayus (longevity) and similar matters. Parasara has generally agreed with Jaimini in this regard. The difference is in the sloka ‘gauraO: iptamah: Sauk`at\pit: pu~ SanaOScarat\.. iptraO SvaSauraO tqaa..” implying that from Saturn, know about children and from Rahu wife, Maternal grandfather, Father-in-law etc. This is the only difference as Parasara has clearly taken eight Sthira Karakas (Fixed Significators for the scheme, as well.

2. Having explained the Charakaraka (Temporary Significators) & Sthirakarakas (fixed significators) Parasara has also explained the Naisargika Karakas (Natural Significators) of Bhavas as well as Yogakarakas (Fortune Significators).

3. The stanza 1.1.24 has been interpreted differently by other scholars. ‘Manda’ means Saturn and could also mean the ascendant (85/12 = 1 Rem). Jyayam refers to elders like elder brothers etc and could also mean oldest. Thus, while my understanding that Saturn signifies elders & elder co-borns is also based on stanza 1.3.11, others have interpreted this as ‘Saturn is the oldest and the weakest’ etc. The latter although an astrological fact, does seem quite out of context.

TranslationThere are exception (to the rule vide preceding stanza).

PurportThe exception to the general rules vide stanza 1.1.25 & 26 have been explained by Parasara as follows:-

(i) The exceptions are the fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Taurus and Scorpio are even, yet the count is zodiacal while Leo and Aquarius are odd and yet the count is reverse. Then the signs having zodiacal count are called vimsopada (odd footed) and the signs with reverse count are called sampada (even footed).

(ii) If the Lord is exalted, a year is added and if debilitated, a year is subtracted.

(iii) Rahu and Saturn are the Lords of Aquarius, while Ketu and Mars are the Lords of Scorpio.

(a) If both Co-Lords are in the sign, it contributes 12 years (e.g. If Ketu and Mars are in Scorpio, it gives 12 years).

(b) If one is placed elsewhere, determine the period from this separately placed co-lords. (If Ketu is in Scorpio and Mars in Aries, the dasa

17

Page 29: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

should be reckoned through Mars. Counting from Scorpio to Aries, we have six signs, minus one gives 5 years).

(c) If both are placed in different signs, the stronger shall determine the dasa.

(d) If both are equally strong, the larger period should be adopted.

TranslationNormally, the count (as obtained in the preceding stanza) gives the dasa period of the sign in years.

PurportWhat are the exceptions? The dasa period in years is used for natal (human) horoscopy. This will require suitable modifications for other charts depending on the Paramayus (full longevity) of the charts. For example, in a horary chart concerning the swearing in of a government, the maximum life of the Lok Sabha (House of People in India) is 5 years. Then the dasa periods ‘P’ would have to be proportionately reduced by the formula P 5 120.

TranslationThe arudha (Pada Lagna) of the Ascendant (and other signs) is the sign obtained by counting as many signs from the Lord as it has progressed from the ascendant (or other sign).

PurportFor example, if Mars is in Virgo for Aries ascendant, we have six signs counting from Aries to Virgo. Now counting six signs from Virgo, we arrive at Aquarius which in the Arudha (Image) or Pada Lagna. In this manner the Arudhas (Image) of the 12 signs can be determined. For Aquarius, amongst Saturn & Rahu and for Scorpio, amongst Ketu and Mars, the planet which determines the dasa of the sign shall also be used for reckoning the Arudha. In this manner, the Arudha of the planets also can be ascertained by counting from the planet to the stronger of the signs it owns and then, as many signs from this house.

If the Arudha computed as per stanza 1.1.30. comes to the 7th house (i.e. the Lord is either in the 4th/10th house), then the fourth house should be taken as the Arudha; and if it comes to the 1st house (i.e. the lord is in the 1st/7th house), 10th houses should be taken as the Arudha. The Arudha chart (fig 1.6) is drawn to indicate the padas of all the 12 houses as well as the Arudha of the planets. The Arudha are shown in Roman numerals. For example, Arudha lagna is denoted as-T. The ascendant is Leo and the lord of the ascendant, viz. the Sun, is in the ascendant. Hence the Arudha is in the tenth house Taurus. Again, Scorpio, the fourth house has two lords Ketu and Mars. Both are unconjoined. Ketu in Capricorn is aspected by the five planets in Leo including Jupiter and Mercury whereas Mars in Virgo is aspected only by Saturn. Capricorn with Ketu is stronger. Hence counting from Scorpio to Ketu we have 3 signs and similarly, the third house from Ketu, viz Pisces becomes the Matripada (IV). Similarly, Aquarius is the seventh house having two Lords Saturn and Rahu. Saturn has the advantage of the aspect of Mars as well as placement in a dual sign thereby determining the Darapada (VII) at Libra.

In a similar manner, the Arudha of the planets are also determined. The luminaries and the nodes own one signs each. This makes the job easy. For example, the Sun is in

23

Page 35: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Leo and the pada is temporarily in Leo. Since this is not allowed, the tenth sign Taurus becomes the Arudha of the Sun. similarly for Mars-Aries, Venus-Libra, Mercury-Virgo, Jupiter-Pisces and Saturn-Capricorn determines the Arudhas. These have been shown in Fig. 1.6. Readers may refer to Stanza 2.3.5-2.3.17 for sources of strength of signs (and planets deposited in them).

The next step is to calculate the special ascendant (ref: Chapter IV Quarter 3). Sunrise: 6:20’: 56” IST (corrected war times).

Ista Ghati = (Birth time – Sun Rise) 2.5= (7:11’: 40” – 6:20’: 65”) 2.5= Gh 2:6’: 50”

Ghatika Lagna = Sun longitude + (Ista Ghati 30o)= 4s 3o50’ + 2s 3o25’ = 6s 7o15’

Hora Lagna= Sun longitude + (Ista Ghati 30o) /2.5= 4s 3o50’ + 0s 25o22’ = 4s 29o12’

Bhava Lagna= Sun longitude + (Ista Ghati 30o)/5= 4s 3o50’ + 0s 12o41’ = 4s 16o31’

Similarly, the Pranapada etc. can be calculated.

The sixteen divisional charts should be drawn and the special ascendants (especially Hora lagna and Ghatika lagna) should be indicated, at least in the Drekkana and Navamsa charts. The Rasi, Navamsa & Drekkana charts with Janma Lagna (Lag) Hora Lagna (HL) and Ghatika Lagna (GL) are shown in Fig. 1.7.

The Varnda Chakra is drawn after this to indicate the Varnadas of the 12 houses (is Roman numerals) (Fig. 1.8.). (Ref: Chapter IV).

The calculation of the variable dasas as given in this Quarter has been shown (Table 1.9). This is used various dasas like the chara dasas, Narayana dasas (also called Padakrama) etc.

EXPLANATORY NOTES:

25

Page 37: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

(I) Aspect: The aspect of a sign and planets in them to the ascendant plays a significant role in determining the nature and abilities of the individual. These have been explained by Jaimini is subsequent Chapters. The following terminology is used in Vedic astrology.

(a) KARTA: Any planet aspecting/joining the Janma Lagna, Hora lagna or Ghatika lagna is the Rasi, Derkkara or Navamsa charts is a Karta. Some astrologers add that the aspect could also be to the seventh house from these ascendants for planets for a planet to qualify as Karta. However, the seventh house rules spouse and planet aspecting the seventh houses from either of the three lagans in either of the three charts does become a Karta for spouse. Similarly for the other houses, the Karta’s can be ascertained.

(b) KEVALA: If the Subhapati (Lord of Moon sign) aspect/joins the Janma lagna (or Hora/Ghatika lagna) it is termed as Kevala. If the Kevala aspect both of Janma lagna and Hora lagna or Janma lagna and Ghatika lagna it is called Kevala Yogada. If the Kevala aspects all three Janma, Hora and Ghatika lagans, it is called a Kevala mahayogada.

For example, in chart 1 (Fig. 1.7) the Moon is in Leo and the Lord of the Moon sign, the Sun is in Janma Lagna (Leo) conjoins Hora lagna (Leo) land aspects Ghatika Lagna (Libra). Hence, the Sun is a Kevala Mahayogada. Rajiv Gandhi was born with sliver spoon and lived a life of plenty with Rajyoga as well. These are the results of good karma in the past birth.

Similarly, six planets except Rahu, Mars & Saturn qualify as Karta’s in Rasi chart. Rahu qualifies in Navamsa while Saturn and Mars qualify in Drekkana.

Page 38: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

All eight planets except Saturn qualify as Swakarta (aspecting/joining) Janma lagna in the Rasi, Navamsa & Drekkana). Similarly planets aspecting/joining Hora lagna become Dhanakarta (wealth) and planets aspecting/joining Ghatika lagna become Rajkarta

(Power/authority).

YOGADA: Yoga means Union and a planet aspecting/conjoining the Janma and Hora lagna or Janma and Ghatika lagna becomes a yogada (i.e. capable of taking the native to prosperity or power respectively). It is important to note that the planet must aspect/join the natal ascendant for the native to himself enjoy the wealth and position. If the yogada aspect/join only the Hora lagna and Ghatika lagna, wealth & power will be with somebody else he associates with.

In the illustration, there are six yogada in the Rasi chart itself and that too, all the natural benefics and the luminaries. The natural malefics Saturn, Mars and Rahu have stayed out. Five of the six yogada aspect all three of Janma, Hora and Ghatika lagna. The native was the eldest son of the longest reigning Prim Minister of India and was associated (directly of indirectly) with the topmost level of government.

1. DIVISIONAL CHARTS: The construction of divisional chart can be studied from standard text like Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra Most astrologers use three charts namely the Rasi (D1), Navamsa (D9) and Drekkana (D3) charts.

(A) DREKKANA RECKONING: There are two methods of reckoning the Drekkanas i.e. by either regular count (zodiacal/reverse) or triplicity. In the method based on regularity, the Parivrittitraya Drekkana (based on Vriddha

27

Page 39: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Karika) uses a zodiacal count while the Somanath Drekkana uses zodiacal count only for odd signs and reverse for even signs. In the method based on triplicity, Parasara Drekkana takes the trines from the sign itself while the Jagannath Drekkana takes the trines from the movable sign. The method of Parasara (table 1.13) is recommended.

(b) NAVAMSA RECKONING: The method of reckoning Navamsa occupied by the ascendant and the planets as taught by Parasara (Table 1.15) is widely accepted. These are regular and zodiacal. Some astrologers use the Phalaratnamala whereby the reckoning of navamsa, although regular for odd signs, is the reverse for even signs. This is not recommended.

(c) HORA RECKONING: Readers will be familiar with the Parasara Hora (D2) reckoning whereby the first hora (0-15o) of an odd sign and the second hora (15-30o) of an even sign is ruled by the Sun. similarly, the second hora of an odd sign and the first hora of an even sign are ruled by the Moon. (Table 1.16). Some astrologers use the division of the zodiac into two horas (halves) by an imaginary line passing through 0o Leo and 0o Aquarius. planets & other bodies

TranslationThe results of planetary (and sign) placement based on the sv˜Õþa are being described.

PurportThere is considerable difference of opinion among astrologers regarding sv˜Õþa. Swa means the self and it is well known that the Sun, the Moon and the Lagna form the tripod of life. However, instead of the Sun, the individual soul in the chart is indicated by the Chara ˜tmakaraka. Thus, Swa can refer to both the Lagna in the physical level and the Chara ˜tmakaraka in the spiritual level. Thus, “sv˜Õþa” should be understood as the Navamsa of Lagna [and other planets (karakas)]. The Navamsa sign occupied by the ˜tmakaraka is called the K˜rak˜Õþa in the Navamsa chart itself. Similarly, the Navamsa sign occupied by the Lagna is called Lagnamsa. ‘sva’ generally refers to Lagna and in its broader sense, includes the ˜tmakaraka. The readings given here are for the Navamsa chart and not the Rasi chart.

The Lagnamsa represents that which is reading available or easily achieved as this indicates the abilities and skills

Page 47: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

inherited by the native from his previous incarnations. This explains child prodigy and other wonders. The K˜rak˜Õþa, on the other hand, represents the desire of the soul. If the two conjoin, the stage is set for self-actualization. Instead, if the two are in Shadastaka1 life can be a bed of thorns. Similarly, consider other karakas from Bhava’s. Parasara2 has also taught sv˜Õþa to mean both K˜rak˜Õþa as well as Lagnamsa.

(ii) Gulika is an Upagraha and is called the child of Saturn. The day duration is divided into 8 parts (called Yama) and, beginning from the weekday lord, in the sequence of the days of the week, each planet owns one part. The eight part is owned by Gulika. Thus, Gulika is the ascendant for the time ending the part ruled by Saturn. For example on a Wednesday (day birth), Saturn owns the 4th part. If the day duration was exactly 12 hours and the Sunrise at exactly 6 a.m., Gulika would rise at the end of the fourth part i.e. 12 4/8 = 6 hrs after Sunrise or 12:00 Noon. Table (1.19) gives the ready reckoner for calculating Gulika. The additional information required would be the Sunrise/Sunset and Day/Night duration depending on day/night birth.

TranslationIf Sun and Jupiter are in the 9th house, the native is a confidant (or faithful) of his elders and teachers.

Purport(i) Stanza 1.2.48-51 gives the general principles

concerning the 9th house that deals with dharma (or religion) which is inherited from father (most societies are patriarchal) and the higher learning/wisdom which is obtained from ones teachers or from the boss in office. The natural significators for the two are the Sun and Jupiter.

(ii) Most commentators have given stanza 1.2.51 as gur˜vaviþv˜sva× (guravivñaSv>) instead of guraviþv˜sa×. The meaning changes completely indicating that the Sun and Jupiter in the 9th house make one faithless/disloyal to his parents and teachers. Such and interpretation is contrary to the basic principle enunciated by Jaimini in stanza 1.2.48 & 49 as Jupiter is a first rate benefic and the natural Guru. However any planet in the ninth

57

Page 69: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

house aspects the third house thereby is making the native passionate. Jupiter in the ninth producing a rebellious and disobedient person while also saying that a benefic in the ninth house makes the native truthful and obedient to his teachers & elders! Is contradictory. Hence the version given by this scribe may be accepted.

(iii) Parasara adds that Venus and Mars in the ninth house (from K˜rak˜Õþa) indicate that the lover (having illicit relationship with native) will die. Mercury and Moon in the ninth will cause imprisonment due to an illicit relationship. Jupiter alone in the ninth indicates excessive passion and sex.

(i) Some commentators interpret c˜pe to imply Sagittarius, but this is against the basic method of interpreting the Jaimini Sutras. The results of other planets are indicated for the benefit of readers-Sun indicates a garden, Mars a wall or such obstructions, Mercury a park or playground, Jupiter a temple, Venus shows a bathroom or bedroom, Saturn and Rahu indicate the tavern or some dirty place etc. the exaltation etc, aspect and signs involved should also be considered.

(ii) The principle involved is that the ‘place’ is in the tenth house from the activity. Since the previous stanzas speak of spouse in the seventh house, the tenth there from (fourth house) is the place where the mating occurs. Earlier stanzas 1.2.52-56 indicate illicit relation in the second house. Thus, the tenth there from i.e. the eleventh house from sv˜Õþa indicates the place where this mating occurs. Similarly, while the sv˜Õþa indicates the vocation, the place where this is practiced is the tenth house.

Purport(i) The four natural benefics, Jupiter, Mercury, Moon &

Venus, and the Sun indicate the five auspicious world of sva×, jana×, mana×, tapa× and satya. This is the Hindu belief. However, there is rebirth after this stay.

(ii) Most other religious have a simple afterlife theory of heaven and hell and astrologers can infer that benefics in the 12th indicate heaven while malefics indicates hell.

(iii) Parasara adds that malefics in the 12th indicate expenses on unlawful and bad activities while benefics give legitimate expenses.

Purport(i) kriy˜= 12/12 = 12 Rem; c˜pa= 15/12 = 4 Rem. Thus one interpretation is that Ketu in the 4th/12th gives/leads to emancipation. In fact during the dasas when Rahu is in the 10th house (i.e. Ketu is in the fourth), the native goes on a pilgrimage and has a symbolic dip in sacred water to wash his sins. If such a placement of the nodes occurs from sv˜Õþa itself, they lead him towards emancipation.

(ii) The interpretation of 4th/12th as Cancer & Pisces does not link sv˜Õþa, while the interpretation of Kriya as Aries and Chapa as Sagittarius is literal and goes against the spirit of Jaimini Sutras, but is in the same vein as Parasara.

TranslationVenus in the 12th house in a malefic sign gives similar results (i.e. devotion towards the dark forces).

Purport(i) The stanzas 1.2.72-81 indicate the deities popular in Hindulism. However the standard texts like Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, Jataka Parijatha, Saravali etc, teach the deities of the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn are Agni, Jala, Skanda (Kartikeya), viÿõu, Indra, Sachi and Brahma respectively. þiva and þakti were the deities of agni & jala. This was the Vedic personification of nature. Subsequently, in books like Prasna Marga we find a very elaborate brahmancial scheme with a host of Gods and demi-gods.

(ii) For other religions, the basic principle can be easily adapted. For Vaisnavites, Parasara gives the ten avatars from Sri Ram to Sri Kalkin for the nine planets and the lagna (Sun to ascendant). Similarly, the ten Guru’s from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh indicate the essence of the nine planets and lagna. In Christianity, Sun represents the Holy Ghost and Moon represents Mother Mary. Jupiter and Venus will indicate the saints (Jesus Christ is the great teacher) and angels. In this manner the erudite astrologer should indicate the worship.

It is my opinion that the second house, which also determine knowledge like the fifth be considered as per the advice of Jaimini. For example, Ketu in the 3rd house need not produces speech defects unless there is malefics is sv˜Õþa to aid it in causing papakartari yoga on the second house.

EXPLANATORY NOTES & CASE STUDIEDS

1.SWAMSA: In Stanza 1.2.11 have preferred the broad interpretation of results of the various navamsa on the basis of the ascendant and planets instead of restricting it to K˜rak˜Õþa alone. The results indicate in the subsequent stanzas are generally negative and this need

87

Page 99: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

not always apply to the K˜rak˜Õþa as will be seen in actual practise. In fact ‘Grahanam’ covers the planets and the results (negative) of the navamsa of those planets inclined to indicate evil results should be studied.

(a) Badhak: It is the lord of obstruction. For a movable sign, the eleventh house , the ninth house for a fixed sign and the seventh house for a dual sign are the places of obstruction (Badhak sthana). The Lord of the badhaksthana from the ascendant shall surely be included to damage the health.

Chart 2: Male born 7.8.1963, at. 21:14’ IST at 21N28,’ 84E01’

In Chart 2, Pisces ascends and its seventh house (Virgo) is the badhaksthana. The Lord of this house (Mercury) is placed in Leo in the navamsa chart indicating the danger of bites from dogs and other canines (Stanza 1.2.6). In February 1969 the native was severely bitten by a dog. The Narayana Padakrama Dasa-antar was Pisces-Leo and the Vimsottari Dasa-antar was Jupiter-Mercury. The K˜rak˜Õþa is Virgo and Lagnamsa is Scorpio and neither has indicated the results. Thus, we may infer that the negative results of Navamsa should be studied from the evil planets like Badhak Lord etc.

The natively has a relatively comfortable life so far since Venus is in the navamsa lagna (stanza 1.2.15). His strong point in mathematic (Ketu in Lagnamsa-stanza 1.2.14)

Lag 13o50’ Mars 13o41’Ven14o56’ (PK)

Chapter I Quarter-1

And knows astrology (notes under stanza 1.2.114). Note the strong relationship between Jupiter in Pisces in Ascendant and exalted Ketu in Sagittarius in the 10th

house in the Rasi Chart. The knowledge of astrology and the Vedas etc is largely inherited due to the blessing of his grand father and father as well (stanza 1.1.115 applies because the association of Ketu with Guru is very strong in the Rasi Chart). The native likes to write and, perhaps has such abilities as stanzas 1.2.102 (Moon) & 1.2.103 (Venus) are applicable from Lagnamsa. He used to paint in boyhood days and won a few prizes (stanza 1.2.105 artistic abilities) and can be a great critic (both of books and people!). finally Venus in lagnamsa is aspected by the Sun from Capricorn. Stanzas 1.2.14, 1.2.19 are applicable and he is employed in the Government. It is evident that all the results from lagnamsa have easily manifested in the early life.

K˜rak˜Õþa is Virgo with Saturn in it. Yet Stanza 1.2.109 does not yield results, as he is not afraid of the stage. In fact he has participated in a number of school/college plays, debates, seminars etc as indicated by Venus in lagnamsa (stanza 1.2.105). The natural question that arises in the real use of these temporary significators (Chara Karakas). As indicated the Atmakarak is the soul significator and shows the ‘inner drive’ and aspirations. These may or may not manifest depending on the extent to which the atmakarak is allowed to develop freely by the lagnamsa. For example, from the K˜rak˜Õþa (Virgo) the Sun is in the fifth house showing a deep desire to study Vedanta and music (stanza 1.2.113). The applicability of Stanza 1.2.83 may be noted, as there are all four malefics in trines to k˜rak˜Õþa. The native has some knowledge of mantra-shastra, yantra & tantra. Fortunately, the atmakarak is aspected by the moon (stanza 1.2.85) indicating that this knowledge will be used for beneficial purpose.

89

Page 101: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Again, the Atmakarak (Sat) is like the Sun and the amatyakarak (Jupiter) is like the Moon (heart). The twelfth from k˜rak˜Õþa has Mercury in Leo aspected by the Sun. he belongs to a family of Shivaites and Sri Ram (Vishnu Avatar) and Lord Siva are worshipped. Similarly the sixth from Amatyakarak (in navamsa) Cancer is aspected by Jupiter, Ketu, Venus, Rahu, Mars showing devotion for many deities.

The Arudha Lagna (Rasi chart) is Sagittarius with Ketu in it. Saturn is in the second in Capricorn as the Sun is in the 8th house in Cancer. In Vimsottari Dasa-antar of Saturn-Ketu the family had a serve financial setback. Stanza 1.2.119 is applicable from Arudha lagna only. The presence of Jupiter in the ascendant was the saving grace.

A movable sign Aries rises in the ascendant. The badhak rasi (obstruction sign) is the eleventh house Aquarius, whose lord Saturn occupies Sagittarius navamsa. Stanza 1.2.10 was applicable and in the Vimsottari dasa-antar of Mercury-Saturn, she fell from the third floor of a high rise building. Yet she had a miraculous escape with just a broken leg that healed in a few months! The aspect of Jupiter on lagna and lagnamsa was the saving Grace. The lagnamsa is Leo and k˜rak˜Õþa is Aries. Yet stanzas 1.2.6 & 1.2.2 did not work proving that ‘Swamsa Grahanam’ Jaimini meant that the border results of

Page 102: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

Swamsa and the planets would be explained in this quarter.

The Moon is in the fourth house from lagnamsa aspected by Mars & Jupiter from Aries and the Sun & Venus from Capricorn. If we consider planetary sight (Graha dristi) as well, Rahu and Mars are both aspecting the Moon (debilitated in Scorpio in Navamsa). Thus, Stanza 1.2.91 & 1.2.92 apply indicating the dreadful disease Tuberculosis which disturbed her education and hospitalized her for a long time. The aspect of natural benefics Jupiter and Venus brought the cure. From K˜rak˜Õþa (Aries), the fourth is Cancer aspected by a debilitated Moon from a martian sign Scorpio (Rasi dristi) and also by Rahu if we consider Graha Dristi.

Thus, we can draw the following inferences: -

1. Malefic results of the divisions will be indicated by badhakesh (Lord of obstruction) and other evil planets.

2. In evaluating results of houses, the results of Lagnamsa will be more pronounced than the K˜rak˜Õþa.

3. In evaluating aspects, both Rasi dristi (Sign sight) and Graha Dristi (planetary sight) should be considered.

The Chart 4 belongs to the greatest lady singer of modern India who has to here credit the largest number of recorded songs in world. Jupiter is the atmakarak and the lagnamsa and K˜rak˜Õþa are one and the same (Leo). This is a specific Rajyoga. The Moon in the fifth from Swamsa produces a singer (Stanza 1.2.112) as Venus in Swamsa gives eloquence and artistic abilities (stanza 1.2.105). Further the Moon is in Sagittarius Namvmsa. However, it will be seen that she has not authored any books inspite of Jupiter, Moon & Venus in Swamsa/5th house. It is because the navamsa gives the general directions whereas subtle differences should be seen from the Dasamsa (D-10). Here popularity and fame can be judged by the presence of two natural benefics (Inc. Atmakarak) in Lagnamsa as the lord of lagnamsa (Sun) is exalted in the 9th house.

However, Saturn has played a very negative role in the chart as the Lord of Upapada (Capricorn) and its second house, it is in the 8th from Lagna in Rasi chart and debilitated in navamsa. She has not married and is, consequently, issueless. Besides Saturn is debilitated in the 9th house from Swamsa (stanza 1.2.50) and is with the Sun (Stanza 1.2.51). The debilitated Saturn deprived her of father (died) at a young age and she had to shoulder the entire responsibility of the family resulting in delay and denial of her marries. The presence of exalted Sun automatically cancels the negative aspect of ‘betrayal of father’ indicated by Saturn. Jupiter associating with the Swamsa/5th indicates that the knowledge of music will be traditionally acquired. Her father was her teacher, being a great singer of his times (the Sun is lord of Swamsa in the 9th house). The Sun is the Bhratrukarak and lord of Swamsa. Venus is in the fifth house from Bhratrukarakmsa indicating that her sister will also be talented. One younger sister Mrs. Asha

Bhonsle in also a singer of international repute. Saturn the Putrakarak (child) is quite adversely placed and besides debility, is defeated by the exalted Sun and Ketu. Children were denied like marriage. Similarly, the darakarak (Mercury) in severely afflicted by Mars and Rahu denying marriage.

The following inferences maybe drawn from this charts reading.

1. When there are multiple vocational indications the Amatyakarak (Moon in the present case) has a deciding edge over other planets.

2. If the concerned Charakaraka is severely afflicted/weak, fruits from the concerned aspect of life may be either denied or delayed or bitter, (example Mercury in Darakarak and Saturn putra karak).

3. If a house has contradictory planetary indications, the stronger shall dominate (example Sun and Saturn in the 9th house where the results of the Sun have dominated).

The noteworthy point in chart 4 is that since the lagnamsa and k˜rak˜Õþa merge, the stage is set for self actualization in this life and she has reigned as the uncrowned Queen of Indian music for about four decades.

Chart 5: Male born on 24th June 1964 at 10:12’ am IST at 30N20’, 76E25’.

Inspite of Jupiter being the Atmakarak (i.e. placed in k˜rak˜Õþa the native does not have any fear of God nor is religious nor has any goodness.)

93

Page 105: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

The relationship with his wife is restricted to the extent of keeping his son happy. Wife is sickly and orthodox and a dogmatic follower of religious rituals (Saturn is in the 7th house from lagna and lagnamsa and is retrograde in its own sign i.e. very weak). The second from lagnamsa is Leo with its lord (Sun) eclipsed by Rahu. The second is aspected by a host of planets from movable signs including Venus (in Libra) and Mars (in Aries). The native has at least three affairs outside marriage with other married women and is an ‘expert’ at breaking homes. The devilish lust does not end in snaring married ladies as ‘prospective lady employees’ and even prostitutes are in the list. Unfortunately Ketu has nothing to do with the second from lagnamsa.

Chart 6 is the horoscope of noted astrologer of international repute. Ketu in the fifth from lagnamsa confirm his astrological acumen as Venus in Lagnamsa gives the much needed assimilating abilities. Saturn joins Venus to produces a Tapaswi (one who puts in great effort to achieve supernatural powers or for seeking God). Compare this to chart 2 where Venus and Ketu are in lagnamsa.

Now the atmakarak is debilitated and conjoins Rahu in Navamsa. This should have produced a metallurgist! Thus, it is evident that the vocation and skills should be studied from the lagnamsa instead of K˜rak˜Õþa. However, Rahu in K˜rak˜Õþa gave superb research

Page 106: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

abilities and coupled with Guru in 9th from K˜rak˜Õþa (excellent teachers) lead to his remarkable achievement and great intuition. The Sun is also in the 9 th from lagnamsa indicating that he would be trusted by the king (or powerful people). The most important point in any chart in the relationship between lagna lord and atmakarak. Here, the k˜rak˜Õþa (Pisces) in the eleventh from the lord of lagnamsa (Venus in Taurus) shows growth and harmony.

Chart 7: Dr. Rajendra Prasad 3rd December 1884; 8:45’am LMT 25N36, 85E10.

In the Navamsa chart 7, the Lagna and K˜rak˜Õþa are one and the same Virgo thereby setting the stage for self actualization. The lagnesh (Mercury) is in the ninth house (trine) indicating his initial profession, as a lawyer Since Saturn is the Atmakarak in lagna, stanza 1.2.20 applies indicating success in a chosen sphere, and Mercury (stanza 1.2.17 Lawyer) shows initial profession. The aspect of the nodes (especially Ketu) dragged him into the freedom struggle of India and the aspect of the Sun (from Sagittarius) indicated his final vocation as politics and his ascendancy to the post of President of India. Venus in the fifth shows eloquence and a successful debator. Both in the Rasi and navamsa there is a grahamalika yog from the ninth house to ascendant (Rajyoga).

Now among the signs aspecting the dual lagnamsa & K˜rak˜Õþa, Sagittarius is the strongest and the presence of the Royal Sun in a friendly sign gave him the high position as the first President of India. Stanza 1.2.47 indicates that the Sun in the fourth will give residence in a thatched house. However, this will happen if the Sun is

95

Page 107: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

weak or in inimical signs, but in exaltation or friendly sign or in conjunction with exalted planets (Ketu) Stanza 1.2.43 would apply indicating the Royal residence (i.e. Rashtrapati Bhawan).

Stanza 1.2.48 applies indicating righteousness and devotion due to Mercury and stanza 1.2.49 indicates a rebellious nature due to Mars. These need not function towards one and the same individual (Guru). Since Mercury is lagnesh, the truthfulness and righteous disposition would be a marked natural trait whereas Mars would give the drive to rebel against oppression or the king (i.e. British Indian Government.

Reader may note stanza 1.2.52 applies as the second house is a varga of Venus and is aspected by Mars. Yet, Dr. Prasad was a gentleman with self control. This is due to the exaltation of the seventh lord Jupiter which annulled the negative effects of the second house ownership of Venus and aspect of Mars. The following inference maybe drawn from this chart: -

The mere presence of a negative yoga does not give the results if the concerned house is strong. (Venus & Mars influencing the second as the 7th lord Jupiter is exalted)The house occupancy of the lagnesh is a vital factor in determining the drive and prim desire. The relationship between the Lagnamsa and K˜rak˜Õþa is the deciding factor for judging the level of rise. The presence of the nodal axis if in 4th & 10th houses could indicate either Rajyoga (Ketu in 4th) or pravrajya yoga (Ketu in 10th). Ketu in the fourth acts as Grihakarak and in the tenth as the Mokshakarak.

Chart 8 is the horoscope of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, the saint of modern India.

In the navamsa, Libra rises with Venus in the twelfth house (emancipation). Both Venus and Mars are exalted in Rasi and debilitated in navamsa indicating pravrajya yoga. Thus, the two primary ‘passionate’ planets have also contribute to the Sanyasi yoga. Jupiter in the fifth indicates deep knowledge of the Vedas and scriptures, especially in a philosophical sign Aquarius. The presence of Mercury and Saturn (as 5th Lord) consolidated the Gyana yoga giving knowledge of social systems, law (traditional) and every branch of knowledge including life after death. The nodal axis is alone the 4th-10th houses with Ketu in the 10th house aspecting the second house as well (confirming his Brahmacharya). Mars does aspect the second house, but is in debility and is defeated by Ketu (Stanza 1.2.54 dominates and the sage, although married lived like a celibate).

Rahu is the Atmakarak and is, naturally, placed in K˜rak˜Õþa. Does that him diabolical or tamasic? Definitely not since the Atmakarak represents God in the chart, and since Rahu is also the Lord of Lagna (in Rasi Chart) and placed in the fourth house, it shows that a sage is born. Rahu is also the dispositor of luminaries in Rasi Chart. The Putrakarak (Jupiter) is retrograde in the fifth (both in Rasi and amsa). In amsa, Saturn & Mercury afflict the putrakarak thereby denying progeny. However, Jupiter gave him an excellent disciple (also seen from 5th

97

Page 109: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

house and putrakarak; Swami Vivekananda, who was born in Sagittarius Lagna of Jupiter) spread his teachings throughout the world and founded the Ramakrishna Mission.

Jaimini has taught that the spiritual diety is to be seen from (1) the 12th house from Atmakarak (2) the sixth house from Amatyakarak and (3) the Bhratrukarak. The twelfth (emancipation) from K˜rak˜Õþa is the symbolic world to which the soul departs and hence, is the place of Atma Gyana or Gyanayoga (the yoga of knowledge). The sixth (service) from Amatyakarak shows the Karmayoga (yoga of Action) and also shows the sustainer in the present world. The Bhratrukarak shows Bhakti or the undying attachment of the heart. In the navamsa the K˜rak˜Õþa is Capricorn with the Sun in the 12th house in Sagittarius. The Sun represents Lord Siva and Sagittarius shows him from as the teacher. Sri Ramakrishna’s tutelary diety and the passage of soul were Sri Dakshineswara (from of Lord Siva as the teacher) and Satyaloka, respectively. The Amatyakarak Mars is in Cancer and sixth there from is again Sagittarius with the Sun in it indicating that his sustenance (both physical and spiritual) will be done by Sri Dakshineswara and his Karma yoga that leads to undying fame shall be brought about by the Sun is Sagittarius. It is indeed noteworthy that swami Vivekananda was born in Sagittarius ascendant with the Sun. In fact, Ramakrishna Paramhansa used to say that in Swami Vivekananda he saw the Lord Siva. Is it a mere coincidence that Swami Vivekananda, his most illustrious disciple founded the Ramakrishna mission that has given the Paramhansa and his teachings undying fame. The Bharatrukarak is the Moon showing the bhakti (love and attachment) for the Divine mother in the from of Sri Kali Ma.

The Sun also aspects the ascendant (he has a receding hair line and good eyesight). Both the Sun & Venus so placed ensure good health and jovial & amicable disposition.

Shivam (Chart 10 Navamsa) is a mediocre student (Mars & Ketu in the 5th except mathematics) and was more interested in games. The Atmakarak (Venus) is in the 6 th

Lord) aspects the ascendant to show his childhood days with mother. With Capricorn rising in navamsa, he is a skeptic and has little belief in astrology or such areas instead, always wanting ‘rational’ (bounded!) explanations. He has weak Sight as the Sun and Venus aspect the twelfth and is somber and serious (Saturn & Rahu aspect the ascendant).

If natural malefics are involved foul means are used to achieve the objective of the concerned house or karaka and the fruits thereof, in the long run, are bound to be adverse.

(ii) For ultimate fructification the argala must be stronger than the obstruction.

TranslationThe aspect (or conjunction of the planet mentioned in the previous stanza) could be to the first or seventh house (from the three ascendants i.e. lagna, hora lagna or ghatika lagna) and could occur in the Rasi, Navamsa or Drekkana charts.

Purport(i) Stanza 1.3.25. is in continuity to stanza 1.3.24

which is also continued by the next stanza 1.3.26. Hence this interpretation.

‘Patnilabhayosche’ means ‘first or seventh houses’ and indicates that the aspect mentioned in the pervious stanzas could be to the first or seventh houses from the three ascendants to fulfill the criteria.

(ii) ‘Rasi’ has been interpreted as the Janma Chakra (D-1) i.e. ‘Lagna’ as it occurs with the words Navamsa (D-9) and Drekkana (D-3). Neelakanthas view of ‘Rasi’ as ‘the Moon sign’ does not see appropriate.

(iii) The aspect of the planet to the ascendant/7th

house from lagna, Hora Lagna or Ghatika Lagna could occur in either of the 3 charts i.e. the divisional charts should be considered independently.

Chapter I Quarter-1

If either one or two of the lagna, hora lagna or ghatika lagna or the seventh houses is not aspected by the (yogada) planet, the Rajyoga is reduced proportionately.

PurportFor a powerful Rajyoga the lagna, hora Lagna and Ghatika lagna (or their seventh house) should be aspected by one planet fails to aspect either one of the three, the Rajyoga is reduced and if it fails to aspect/join two of the three ascendants, the Rajyoga is even weaker.

Text 1.3.27@vm<ztae †Ša[tí.

evamaÕþato d®kk˜õataþca ||

TranslationThe above rules of reduction (in the preceding stanza) is applicable to the evaluation of the Rajyoga in Navamsa and Drekkana charts as well.

PurportA perfect Rajyoga requires aspect to the ascendant, Hora Lagna and Ghatika lagna in either of Rasi, Navamsa or Drekkana charts. The fever aspects to two or one special ascendant reduces the Rajyoga. This is to be seen in the Navamsa and Drekkana charts as well. However, a perfect Rajyoga in the Rasi chart is far more effective than in a Navamsa or Drekkana chart. Similarly, if two or more planets become yogadas, the Rajyoga is proportionately strengthened.

The following points should also be borne in mind while evaluating the Rajyoga:

115

Page 127: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

The strength of the yogada planet like being in exaltation, moolatrikona etc. or being involved in other yogas like parivartan (exchange of signs) or such other combinations.

The nature of the yogada and the nature of planets aspecting the yogada. The aspect of the Sun gives moral fiber and character. The aspect of the Moon ensure reputation, mental strength and good will. The aspect of Mars gives daring and physical strength. The aspect of Mercury gives oratorical abilities and friends and relatives. The aspect of Jupiter gives wisdom and learning. While that of Venus gives good looks and luxuries. The aspect of Saturn gives servants. The aspect of Rahu give foreign associates while that of Ketu gives bellicose companions.

If Jupiter is the yogada, Rajyoga comes through the elevation of others or voluntary renunciation by the superior while Saturn causes a downfall of the superiors. Rahu gives Rajyoga by causing a scandal and destroy the health of the competition. In this manner, the effects of the yogada, aspects and argalas on the yogada should be analyzed.

Unless the yogada is supported by the Sun, the Rajyoga cannot be initiated and unless supported by the Moon the same cannot be sustained. Without the luminaries support, some yoga effects will be left during the period of the yogada.

PurportThis is a difficult stanza. ‘Sukra’ could also mean lagna (þukr˜= 25/12=1 Rem) and ‘Gauna’ could mean the fifth (gauõa= 53/12 = 5 Rem). Thus, Gauna pada has been interpreted by some astrologers as the Mantrarudha or the arudha of the 5th house, while others interpret this as the fifth house from Arudha lagna. Popularly Gauna pada means upapada or the Arudha of the twelfth house.

Jaimini has used the names of planets and ‘sukra’ implies ‘Venus’ as ‘Gaunapada’ refers to ‘upapada’. There are two conditions given in the stanza: (a) Venus should be conjoined or aspected by Rahu (this indicates eye disease also) and (b) upapada should be conjoined or aspected by the Sun (this indicates very weak eyesight). If both conditions (a) & (b) merge, blindness is sure to occur. Readers may refer to a few examples at the end of this Quarter.

The Arudha lagna is in Virgo with the Moon in the twelfth in Leo aspected by Saturn and Venus from Capricorn.

Page 139: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

The natives mother (Moon) who was holding the entire family property in good faith (Moon in fourth house from lagna) colluded with his elder brother (Saturn stanza 1.3.11) and sister (Venus) to deprive him of his legitimate inheritance. This has been a major financial setback in his life. This occurred in 1996 at the beginning of Aries Dasa (Padakrama). Aries is the 12th house from the ascendant and aspects 12th house (Leo) from Aroodha lagna.

Virgo rises in the navamsa with three planets (Sun, Saturn & Ketu) in it. He is skilled and proficient in any job that he undertakes (Saturn and dabbles with politics (Sun). the presence of three malefics has not given an amicable personality but did start his career by selling fire crackers (Sun aspected by Rahu and Mars). Mars is the atmakarak and aspects the lagna with the conjunction of Jupiter in Sagittarius in the fourth house. He has now diversified into real estate business.

According to stanza 1.3.17. The various rules & dictum pertaining to Swamsa also apply to Arudha lagna. In this chart, the Aroodha lagna (Virgo) is aspected by six planets. The aspect of Mercury as the lord of Arudha lagna makes him trading fire crackers, while the aspect of Mars and Ketu clearly indicates his real estate business as Mars is Bhoomikaraka (land significator) and Ketu is Griha Karaka house/building significator). It is pertinent to note that large gains are indicated by Jupiter in the eleventh house from lagna and aspecting both Arudha lagna and lagnamsa. Besides, Jupiter is very strong in Pisces in the Rasi chart and Sagittarius in the Navamsa. This will give results only in latter years during its dasa. The Arudha lagna and Saptmaroodha are in trines indicating excellent compatibility between husband and wife. The Moon in upapada and upapada in

Leo shows the fortune from wife and prosperity after marriage.

Chart 12: Male born 12th November 1934 6:14’ PM IST, Cuttack, India.

The native of Chart 12 was born in a poor family and inspite of the most adverse circumstances, received scholarship and became an engineer. Thus, he emerged as the brightest star of his village (two planets Sun & Venus are in lagnamsa). The aspect of Mars and Ketu on Navamsa lagna made him good in mathematic and engineering. The aspect of Jupiter on Ketu indicates that astrology could be hereditary (his father was an excellent astrologer). The Arudha lagna (Pisces unconjoined and unaspected shows birth in poverty. The house from Arudha lagna, showing disharmony in married life and poor finances. However, the Darapada is aspected by Jupiter, Venus, Sun, Mercury and Ketu showing that the wife belongs to a very rich and prosperous family. In his 39th year the native left his job to start a business in steel (Saturn & Rahu in eleventh from Arudha lagna.). As the lord of Arudha Lagna (Jupiter) is in the eighth house, the native will gamble with his life. The twelfth from Arudha Lagna is aspected by the Sun & Venus showing differences with top politicians (Sun) and Govt. action due to a disgruntled bureaucrat (Venus). Mercury aspects the twelfth house showing litigations and upteen court cases and the aspect of Jupiter to the twelfth house gave huge tax liabilities, which the native paid.

The native is exceedingly brilliant and is capable of picking up any subject and learning on his own. Stanza 1.3.37. (Dhimantah) applies to this chart (a) The lagnesh (Venus) is in the sixth house and is also the sixth lord. (b)

Chart 13 has Scorpio rising with Atmakarak (Mercury) in lagna (Rajyoga). The Lagna, Ghatika lagna (Cancer) and seventh from Hora lagna (Aries) are conjoined/aspected by Saturn and Mercury; providing two Rajyoga.

In the Navamsa, the Hora lagna and Ghatika lagna are in Aquarius as Libra rises. Jupiter and Rahu conjoin/aspect all three of lagna, Hora lagna & Ghatika lagna. The seventh house from lagna (Aries) and seventh the seventh from hora & ghatika lagna (Leo) is conjoined / aspected by the Moon Mars, and Ketu. Thus there are five yogadas (or Rajyogas) in the navamsa chart. The native is a politician and statesman of impeccable moral fibre and has been in parliament for a few decades now.

The Arudha lagna (Virgo) is aspected by the Sun, Venus, Rahu & Ketu indicating his leadership skill and political

knowledge. However, the Moon is in the twelfth house. Thus, although his party returned as the largest single party and he became the Prim Minister of India, the Rajyogas could not be sustained for more than a fortnight. The Sun is the harbinzer of Rajyogas as the Moon is the sustainer.

From the Arudha lagna, Ketu & Venus (benefics) are in the fourth house as Saturn (malefics) is in the third house (2+2+2 = 6; see notes under stanza 1.3.34). Similarly, Mercury, Jupiter (benefics) are in the fourth & eighth houses (1+3+1+1 = 6). Thus, we can infer that the net balance of the mixed planets from Arudha lagna does not indicate Rajyoga.

Mercury is the lord of Arudha lagna placed in lagna and is the atmakarak. From Mercury, Venus, Ketu & Jupiter are the benefics in 2nd & 4th and Mars is malefic in 6th

(2+2+3+1 = 8 points). Similarly, the Sun and Rahu are malefics in the 2nd & 8th houses (1+3 = 4 points negative). Thus, a net balance favors Rajyoga from Mercury).

The seventh lord from Arudha lagna Darakarak (Jupiter) is in the sixth house. The Darapada is also in the eleventh from Arudha lagna as its lord (Moon) goes to the twelfth house. The 7th Lord from lagna (Venus) is placed in debility in navamsa with Saturn in the twelfth from amsa lagna. The native is still a bachelor.

Chart 15 is the horoscope of the first Prim Minister of India. The lagna, hora lagna and seventh from ghatika lagna are aspected/conjoined by the sun alone. Thus, there in only one yogada in the chart. In the Navamsa and Drekkana charts too, the yogada is absent. The mere absence of many yogadas on the basis of aspect to the lagna, HL or GL or their seventh houses should not be construed as absence of Rajyoga in the horoscope. There are a number of traditional Rajoyga which, according to Jaimini are to be studied from relevant texts and are also explained in Chapter III.

The darapada (A7) is in the twelfth from Arudha lagna (AL) indicating some martial disharmony. The ascendant lord (Moon) is in the ascendant indicating that the native

133

Page 145: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

becomes strong (here, mental strength is indicated by the Moon). (Stanza 1.3.41) Sun as the second lord aspects the ascendant indicating good finances on account of father. Timing of Rajyoga (in any dasa system) can be had from stanza 1.3.30 to 1.3.36. Moon is in the fourth from the lord of Arudha lagna (Mars). Both Moon and Venus are in own signs and join in the eleventh from amsa lagna and aspect the second and fifth houses to catapult him to the position of Prim Minister in Moon dasa Venus bhukti (Vimsottari). Similarly, Saturn placed in the fifth from Arudha lagna and second from lagna marked his decline after the Indo-china war in 1962 in Rahu dasa Saturn antardasa.

LOSS OF SIGHT: CASE STUDIED

(Some of the charts were provided by other astrologers or acquaintances and whatever details available have been given in this book).

In chart 16, the upapada (UL: Arudha of 12th house) is in Gemini since Rahu aspected by Mars and Mercury is stronger than Saturn aspected by Venus. The Sun aspects upapada from Pisces thus satisfying the first condition. Although Venus and Rahu do not aspect the upapada, they aspect Saturn the twelfth lord thereby partially satisfying the second condition. The native became blind.

In chart 17, the Upapada (UL) is in Gemini as amongst the two lords of the twelfth house (Aquarius), Saturn aspected by Jupiter is stronger than Rahu although the latter has more aspects. Sun is in upapada in Gemini satisfying the first condition. Venus in Upapada is aspected by Rahu satisfying the second condition. The native was blind.

Page 146: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

In chart 18, Leo is the ascendant and the upapada (UL) is in Pisces. The upapada is conjoined by the Sun satisfying the first condition. The second condition is satisfied as Venus and Rahu conjoin in Aquarius to aspect the twelfth house Cancer. However the two conditions do not merge. Even then the native was born blind.

In chart 19, the upapada (UL) is in Taurus and neither its lord nor upapada is aspected or conjoined the Sun. thus, the first condition is not satisfied. As regards the second condition Venus is lord of upapada and Rahu aspects 12 th

lord Sun from the eighth house. Thus the second condition is only partially satisfied indicating blindness in one eye. However, she is not blind and can see well with other eye. The point to be noted is that Jaimini gives one important rule to determine blindness in a chart. There could be other combinations causing blindness or partial eye damage which should be studied from other texts.

In chart 20, the upapada is in Leo conjoined by the Sun satisfying the first condition. Venus is in upapada but it is unaspected by Rahu who instead is in the twelfth house. Venus and Rahu also do not aspect the twelfth lords. Thus, the second criteria is not satisfied although indirectly influenced. The native underwent eye surgery in his seventh year and emerged successful. The exaltation of the tenth lord Mercury (ruling eyes in Jaimini system) in the tenth house has been the saving grace. Thus we may infer that due care should be taken while evaluating a chart especially where stanzas like 1.3.44 are concerned the tenth house and its lord should be examined.

Purport(i) (Tatra = 26/12 = 2 Rem). The upapada, (the arudha of the 12th house) different from darapada (the arudha of the seventh house). It deals with the institution of marriage and children, while the darapada deals with the sexual appetite and the business/finances in the chart. This differentiation is of vital importance in making predictions as, it is possible that young people may come together and still remain unmarried. There are also many people who have affairs outside marriage.

(ii) In the modern context, the darapada should also be examined before predicting renunciation priesthood (pravrajya yoga as there are many who remain Bachelors and are still in the social stream. Jupiter is the karaka for upapada as Venus is the karak for darapada.

Saturn and Rahu in the second from upapada in Aquarius or Pisces indicate lameness and flatulence etc. respectively for spouse.

PurportSaturn and Rahu should influence the second in Aquarius to indicate lameness. Parasara holds a slightly different view as he includes Capricorn as well as Aquarius. TranslationMoving reverse in manduka gati from the ninth the lord of signs shall indicate the particular children.

PurportUmpteen interpretations have been given for this but of no avail. Nilakantha interprets ‘tadesha’ to mean upapada and its lord however it means that the third from the sign arrived at by counting (as per ‘kramat’) Again panchmamsa (= 657/12 = 9 Rem) indicates that for an even sign ascending the 9th house lord indicates the first pregnancy while for a male sign ascending the fifth house lord indicates the first pregnancy. ‘Kramat’ in the present context means Manduka gati or the frog jump. Thus if the first pregnancy is from the 9th house, the subsequent children will be from the lord of the 7 th, 5th, 3rd 1st etc. respectively (the frog jump is to the third sign). Instead, if the first Pregnancy is from the 5 th house, the subsequent children with be judged from the lord of the 7th, 9th, 11th, etc.

The male planets are the Sun Rahu, Jupiter and Mars while the female planets are Venus, Moon & Ketu. The eunuch planets are Mercury and Saturn. If the Lord of the child joins a male planets or a planet in exaltation the child will be a male. If the lord of the child joins a female planet or a planet is debility, the child will be a female. If male signs disposit the lord, a male issue is indicated while if a female sign disposits the lord a female issue is indicated.

Since the fifth and ninth houses indicate children for male/female charts, the 6th & 10th respectively are the houses destroying the child. If the lord of the child is in these places, the child may be weak. If Venus conjoins, a

EXPLANATORY NOTES

In this quarter sage Jaimini focuses on the immediate family of the native comprising of the spouse and children and subsequently on the brothers/sisters of spouse and self. In the pervious quarter, the sage had explained the concept of Darapada (Arudha of seventh house) whereby the financial status and physical relationship with spouse (and other women) were explained. The focus now comes on the spouse for whom the upapada (Arudha of twelfth house) is reserved. The upapada also indicates the procreative abilities of the native. However, the sage stresses the importance of an in depth microscopic examination of this latter aspect from the Saptamsa (D-7 chart) as it is likely that many births may occur within a time span of two hours (approximate period of rising of an ascendant) and a more detailed study is required for such a sensitive subject. For the convenience of readers Table 1.22 provides the Saptamsa. Subsequently, the sage explains the principles to predict the presence (or otherwise) of

Page 168: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

co-borns of spouse from the upapada. This principle is also applicable for the co-borns of the native from Arudha Lagna. However, for a more detailed examination the Navamsa (D-9) chart should be used for all matters concerning spouse and the Drekkana (D-3) should be use for ones own co-borns

CASE STUDIED: UPAPADA

Chart 21: Male born on 1st of January 1953 at 5:09 am IST at 31N01, 75E48, INDIA. Atmakarak: Mercury; Darakarak: Venus; Upapada (UL): Gemini; AL: Arudha Lagna.

In Chart 21. Scorpio rises with the atmakarak Merrcury in it indicating the pontential for a Rajyoga. However, Mercury is debilitated in the navamsa indicating Rajbhanga Neecha yoga. The native although born in a well-to-do family has wasted away his years in pleasures, and does not follow any occuption. His halfhearted attempts at business have been disastrous during the last seventeen years (upto 1996), thereby proving the vital importance of the Atmakarak in making or marriage a chart.

The upapada is in the eighth house in Gemini and Mercury, its lord, is already involved in a debilitating yoga. The native is still not married. The Moon in the eighth house (that too as the lord of badhak-obstactes has added to the damage as the chandrastama dosha comes on the upapada. The way out of this quagmire is seen from the second from upapada (Cancer). Ketu the Mokshkarak (spiritual guide for emancipation) is placed in Cancer and indicates Brahmacharya (celibacy). The second house lord is the Moon and as explained earlier, is the badhakesh (chief obstructor of the chart) having

157

Page 169: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

chandrastama dosha is placed in its exalted and fixed navamsa Taurus indicating unsurmountable and very high order of obstacles. No doubt that the native is still a bachelor and, inspite of his best attempts, has failed to find a suitable companion.

Compare this horoscope to chart-13 of Shri A.B. Vajpayee who is also a bachelor. Venus, the seventh lord of Rasi chart (in both charts) is in the twelfth house in the navamsa with Saturn. However, the Atmakarak Mercury is very strong in the chart of Shri Vajpayee.

Chart 22: Male born on 23rd November 1930 14:14’ IST 26N21’, 92E42’, India. Atmakarak: Jupiter, Darakarak: Rahu, Upapada: Libra, Darapada: A7: Capricorn.

This chart 22 was sent to the scribe by an astrologer from Guwahati enquiring into various matters including children.

The upapada is in Libra (fruitful sign) unconjoined and unaspected. Its lord Venus is in the ninth house from lagna in the Rasi chart. The papakartari yoga on Libra caused by the Sun and Ketu placed in adjoining houses shall not afflict the upapada as the Sun, unless debilitated, does not harm the upapada. The second house from upapada has beneficial conjunctions and is aspected by its Lord (Mars). Mars is debilitated in Cancer but has neechabhanga (cancellation of debility) due to the placement of Jupiter, Moon and Saturn in quadrants. Besides, Mars is also placed in its exaltation sign in the navamsa (in the eleventh house) causing Neechabhanga Rajyoga. Thus, the upapada indicates a long and fruitful phase of married life.

Chapter I Quarter-1

However, Ketu is in the seventh house from lagna as the Arudha lagna (Gemini) and Darapada (Capricorn) are in shastastaka (mutually 6th & 8th house) indicating a certain amount of martial disharmony. The number of children are seen from the fifth house and fifth lord, from lagna and upapada. The fifth from lagna is Cancer with Mars in it aspected by three planets from Scorpio. The fifth lord (Moon) gains three navamsa. Thus the initial indications are upto 3 or 4 children. In the Saptamsa (D-7), Pisces rises with Saturn Rahu & Moon in it as its lord Jupiter is well placed in Sagittarius. The affliction of Saturn is negligible compared to the beneficial influences indicating a little delay. Pisces is an even sign and fifth house, counted in the reverse is Scorpio whose lord (Mars) is placed in a feminine sign Taurus (female child) without conjunctions. The seventh has Ketu in it as its lord Mercury is in Leo (male sign male child) unconjoined. The third from Virgo in the reverse count is Cancer whose lord (Moon) is in Pisces conjoining Saturn and Rahu. Pisces, Libra and Cancer are very fruitful signs and planets placed therein indicate male issue. Since the lord of this child conjoins Rahu, it shows the limit at three children. Detailed about individual children can be studied accordingly.

Swami Abanindarji’s on 23.3.97 is that” In the reading of my brother Horoscope. The second child will be more independent and may live at some distance from the parental home. Your prediction has come out correct. The second child (a son) B.Engg. Is shortly leaving his parental home to join a service at Jamnagar, Gujarat. Congratulations for your accurate prophecy.”

Actually it is Maharishi Jaimini who should be congratulated since his sloka on the saptamsa hold good for all time.

In chart 23, Jupiter is the seventh in Sagittarius (Hamsa Mahapurush yoga) should have indicated a perfectly normal married life and since the fifth lord Venus is exalted in the tenth house, as naisargika putra karak (Jupiter-natural significator) is strong, many children. How ever, the real life facts are quite different.

The upapada in Capricorn is in the eighth house. Saturn the lord of Capricorn is the weakest planet and upapada in a saturnine sign indicates unorthodox marriages. Saturn as the lord of upapada is placed in the second house indicating marriage to a person who is already married i.e. it will be second marriage of the spouse. Besides, Saturn in Cancer (or Jupiter in Pisces) can give a very powerful Rajyoga (through spouse as it is lord of upapada). She was married to a colleague (Shri M.G. Ramachandran) who not only became the leading film star of Tamil cinema but also went on to become the longest serving Chief Minister of the Tamil Nadu state. He was regarded as a demi-God by the people of the state (Saturn is the Atmakarak). The Darapada is in the twelfth from Arudha Lagna. However, since both are in quadrants and trines from the ascendant and since the Darakarak (Jupiter) is quite fortified, the relationship was good.

Page 172: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

The hora lagna and ghatika lagna are Libra and its lord (Venus) is exalted in Pisces in the tenth house and aspects lagna. The principle underlying Stanzas 1.3.24. to 1.3.27 is that at least one strong planet should like the Ghatika lagna (Power/authority), hora lagna (Wealth) and lagna (self) to be capable of conferring Rajyoga. Similarly, the lord of lagna (Mercury) aspects Libra and the Hora and Ghatika lagans in it. During the tenture of Sri M.G. Ramachandran she enjoyed the states as the first lady of the state and subsequently became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. As regards children, the indications of exalted fifth lord and strong Jupiter have not worked. The trines to upapada are vacant and this does not deny children. However, stanza 1.4.24 in fully applicable in the Saptamsa. Saturn (5th lord) is alone in the 9th house in a mercurial sign as the 9th lord Mercury is in the fifth house with Venus, (Lord of lagna). The dominating influence of Saturn, Venus & Mercury over the trines from Saptamsa lagna without any relief have denied children.

Chart 24. Male born on 3rd November 1968 10:23 AM IST, Delhi.

In the horoscope Mercury, the seventh lord exalted in the tenth and in vargottama navamsa. It is also fortified in trines to the navamsa lagna indicating bright future prospects and rise professionally. The upapada is in Cancer in the eighth house. There are one planet in upapada and its lord (Moon) joins Rahu and Saturn in Pisces. In a subsequently stanza Jaimini explains that the conjunction of Saturn and Rahu in the invisible portion of the zodiac indicates that mother last rites will not be performed. Thus, while this yoga gives material prosperity, the upapada quite afflicted. The second lord from upapada (Sun) is debilitated indicating loss of spouse due to physical/health problems. It maybe noted

161

Page 173: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

that two planets directly conjoin & afflict the lord of upapada and the third, Venus aspects upapada. It was predicted that after losing two wives the native will finally settle down provided suitable remedial measures are taken.

The first engagement was a disaster as the fiancée committed suicide. The second marriage was celebrated amidst great fanfare and the spouse subsequently developed various physical problems including bone Cancer (Saturn and Rahu afflict the Moon). She lost a finger. The divorce finally came through after a terrible marriage. It maybe noted that although the Arudha lagna and Darapada are in quadrants, they are in mutually badhak places to each other, thereby indicating wealth, also bad martial relations. In the navamsa the Sun is further afflicted by a vargottama Saturn as Rahu occupies the seventh house.

Chart 25. Male born 6th September 1957; 5.00’ p.m. IST; Ajmer, INDIA. In chart 25 Capricorn rises with the seventh lord placed in it, as the Sun is the eighth lord in the eighth house. Prima facie denial of marriage is not shown. However, the upapada (UL) is in Pisces as it lord Jupiter conjoins a debilitated Venus (also debilitated navamsa). Ketu the mokshkarak is placed in the second from upapada as Mars (Lord of the second) is in the eighth house in Rasi chart and sixth house in navamsa chart. The native is still a bachelor inspite of having vast landed properties (Mars as the 4th lord aspects lagna & the fourth house). Ketu in the second house from upapada can deny marriage unless there are strong mitigating influences.

CASE STUDIED: CO-BORNS

Chart 26. Male born on 6th December 1967; 1:28’ PM IST; 20N29; 85E52’ India.

In chart 26 the upapada (UL) is in Aries with Rahu in it indicating breathing difficulties etc of spouse. The eleventh house is Aquarius (owned by Saturn & Rahu) and aspected by Venus. The spouse is the eldest born (i.e. elder brother/sister will be there, and if there, will not survive). The third from upapada is a male sign Gemini aspected by Sarurn as the third lord Mercury conjoins a male planet (Sun). She has a younger brother. The Arudha lagans (Al) are in Capricorn. Since Capricorn is Sama rasi (even sign) count in the reverse. The eleventh house is Pisces conjoined by Saturn. The native is the eldest. The third house is Scorpio with the Sun and Mercury in it aspected by Moon, Mars and Rahu. Since the lord (Mars) conjoins feminine Moon he has a younger sister. Thus, we may infer that the sex of the co-born is determined by the signs and planets influencing the lord of the third or eleventh house, as is the case in Saptamsa. It is note worthy that the Moon rises in the horoscope of his younger sister.

Chart 27 Male born on 28th of March 1962; 6:29 AM IST; 22N06; 85E17.

In the horoscope the upapada (UL) is in Sagittarius with Ketu and Saturn conjoined in the second house in Capricorn. The native plans to marry have proved futile for one reason or the other inspite of him having all the luxuries, property and fine job in the USA. The Arudha Lagna (Capricorn) and Darapada (A7: Cancer) are in quadrants indicating excellent finances. The Arudha Lagna is in a Sama (Even) sign indicating reverse

163

Page 175: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

counting. The third from Capricorn is Scorpio having two lords Mars and Ketu. Mars is stronger and conjoins Mercury and Jupiter to indicate two younger brothers. The eleventh from Capricorn (reckored in the reverse) is Pisces wherein exalted Venus is present indicating absence/death of elder co-borns. Derrkana (D-3) chart also clearly indicates brothers and maybe examined fro more details. Now, the conjunction of Mars, Mercury and Jupiter and Rahu should influence the birth of the other brothers.

Chart 2 is a brother of native. He is born in Pisces ascendant with Jupiter in it aspected by Rahu and Mars, exactly as indicted. The Arudha lagna is in Sagittarius (Vimsapada rasi) and the eleventh lord Venus and the Sun in lagna in Pisces as the Moon is the Atmakarak. Thus, the principles of Jaimini are infallible. However readers may note that at times all the planetary indications may not be as explicit as in this illustration indicating that the relationship (bonds) is such cases between the brothers/co-borns are not very strong.

In chart 28 the upapada is in Sagittarius unaspected and unconjoined. Jupiter, its lord conjoins a debilitated Moon (in debilitated navamsa as well) and Venus & Ketu (blood disorders). The second from upapada has an exalted Mars in Vargottama navamsa. However Mars and Mercury are in Graha Yudha (planetary battle by being within one degree) and Mars has emerged victorious as it has a higher longitude. Thus, Mercury is the defeated planet. Further, both planets are within 4 degree of the Sun i.e. combust. This combination of warning and combust planets in the second is aspected by a very debilitated Moon and disease (Venus & Ketu, combination. The lord of the second house from upapada (Saturn) is well placed in the ninth house. However, being retrograde, its placement in an exaltation navamsa

Page 176: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

is akin to debility (since retrogression means opposite results).

The native was married in 1978 and his wife developed breast cancer in the early eighties. The disease was detected late in 1984 when surgery had to performed. She expired in 1995. Although the married life lasted for 17 years, twelve years were sheer suffering. Cancer is a severe blood disorder indicated by Venus & Ketu.

The Saptamsa has Libra rising (this generally indicates one child since Rahu owns the fifth house) with the fifth lord Saturn in debility in Aries indicating a daughter. Planets in exaltation or conjoining exalted planets show the birth of sons while, if debilitated a daughter is born.

CASE STUDED: SAPTAMSA

Chart 29. Male born on 5th January, 1963 at 12:03’ PM at 78E0’, 16N43’.

In chart 29, the Arudha lagna is Capricorn (Reverse count). The eleventh house Pisces is unconjoined, but aspected by the Sun. The eleventh lord Jupiter is in Aquarius aspected by two planets Moon and Rahu. Unfortunately both these planets are aspected by Venus indicating the death of two elders’ sisters (in 6 month and 2 ½ years). However, Jupiter did give and elder brother who survived and married. The third from Arudha lagna is Scorpio with Venus in it indicating danger to younger co-borns. Ketu, (stronger then Mars) is in Arudha Lagna with Saturn and Mercury giving two twin younger sisters. These planets are aspected by Mars. Thus, the combination for one sister will be Ketu, Mars & Saturn and for the other twin will be Ketu, Mars and Mercury. The first combination of Ketu, Saturn & Mars is a specific

165

Page 177: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

yoga for epilepsy, which one of the twins is suffering from. In the Drekkana (D-3) the eleventh house (Virgo) is aspected by two benefics Jupiter and Moon, but the ascendant is aspected by Venus. The eleventh lord Mercury is severly afflicted by Saturn and the nodes indicating early death of elder brother. The Navamsa dasa of Pisces (1990-99) has taken away his father, sister-in-law and elder brother. The vital role played by Mercury (as it tends to debilitate the Venusian influence) is evident in this chart.

The upapada is in Sagittarius with the Sun in it giving a learned and spiritually evolved spouse. The second from upapada has Saturn & Ketu combination (see chart 27 where this has denied marriage so far) but this is watered down by Mercury indicating some bony problems and other obstruction (Saturn) in time. In the Saptamsa (D-7) Capricorn rises (reverse count). The fifth house has Mercury in exaltation (1st child –Male) as Jupiter is in the ninth in Taurus and aspects the ascendant. The natives fertility is beyond doubt. As predicted his first son was born in Rahu-Rahu-Mercury (vimsottari dasa).

Chart 30: Male born on 15/16th June, 1941, 00:10’ AM IST; 17N20’, 78E30’,

In chart 30, the Arudha Lagna is Gemini with Saturn the Atmakarak in the eleventh aspected by Moon and Mars from the ninth house. The upapada and darapada are in the eleventh house (Aries) conjoined by Atmakarak. The natives spouse, though elder in age, is very hard working. There is an excellent understanding between them and the native has prospered, beyond his dreams, after his marriage. No doubt that he considers and respects her like Sri Lakshmi. The aspect of the Mars on the eleventh house from Arudha Lagna determined his

Page 178: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

first profession as an engineer and that of the Moon brought him into the business of selling milk products and sweets. As a benefic in the ninth house from Arudha lagna the Moon promised grand fortune and has made him the leading sweetmeat dealer of the city. Jupiter in the twelfth from Arudha lagna shows his tax payments and some problems from that area. It maybe noted that the lord of lagna has become the atmakarak making the native kindly, pious and God fearing.

Saturn debilitated in the eleventh from Arudha lagna makes him the eldest (two elder sisters expired in 3yrs & 11 months). The third house is aspected by Saturn (not so damaging) and its lord (Sun) conjoins Mercury and Venus and is aspected by the nodes indicating many younger co-borns.

While analyzing the Drekkana it should be borne in mind that the eleventh and third are the main houses for elder and younger co-borns and the twelfth and fourth (being in the second from these houses) are their maraca sthanas (Killer houses) respectively. In the Drekkana (D-3) chart, the chara bhratrukarak (Rahu) is in the twelfth house aspected by Saturn and Ketu. The presence of natural karak for elder co-borns (Jupiter in the twelfth house does not auger well for them and they died young. These are shown by Mercury is Aquarius and the Sun in Gemini as female births. [While odd signs generally show male births (as per Jaimini) the exceptions are Aquarius and Gemini. Similarly while even signs show female births the exceptions are Cancer and Pisces]. In the Drekkana, 3rd lord Jupiter joins Rahu (first younger brother); 5th Lord Rahu joins Jupiter (second younger brother); 7th Lord Mars joins Venus (third younger sister); 9th Lord Mercury in Aquarius (fourth younger sister); 11th

Lord Sun in Gemini (fifth younger sister); ascendant lord Venus joins Mars & Moon (sixth younger sister); Now,

167

Page 179: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

having covered all odd signs the manduka gati (frog jump) is a crawl to the second house Scorpio and its lord Ketu is in Pisces (seventh younger brother). The next co-born is seen from the third there from i.e. the fourth house Capricorn and its lord Saturn is in Sagittarius (eighth younger brother). The planets underlined shall be the ruling planets of these younger brothers/sisters.

Rahu rules the first younger co-born and is in the twelfth house with malefic aspects with Jupiter ruling the second younger co-born. The native assisted these brothers to start a business. In 1994, the immediate younger brother (Rahu) stabbed him in the back and precipitated a family crisis. However the next younger (Jupiter) remained loyal throughout. He has now taken the two youngest brothers (7th Ketu & 8th Saturn (AK) to assist him. In this advisable? The fifth younger co-born (i.e. 3rd younger sister) is shown by the Sun in Gemini. She has Saturn in the seventh house from the Sun. this is a miserable combination. She committed suicide in 1995. Treating Gemini as the temporary ascendant, there are malefics in all quadrants (sarpa yoga). Rahu in the fourth precipitated the evil.

In the saptamsa (D-7), Leo rises with the putrakarak (Venus) in debility in the second as the natural putrakarak (Jupiter) being the fifth lord (first pregnancy) is in the sixth house (second to fifth and hence natural marakasthana) in debility. Jupiter is also in the eighth from Moon and Sun (the sustainer and initiator of the pregnancies) the first pregnancy was aborted. The seventh (Aquarius) has two lords Saturn and Rahu and as atmakarak Saturn dominates. Being in exaltation Saturn gave a very competent son. He is of good health (being in 5th from Moon) and is a doctor. Rahu in the ninth house indicates only one more child after this (i.e. 3

Page 180: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

Chapter I Quarter-1

pregnancies). Mars, the 9th lord, is in Leo showing the second son.

INFERENCE:

Stanzas 1.1.25 to 1.1.27 which pertain to method of counting and others should be understood as follows:-

(a) That for matter concerning the native the reckoning houses from Arudha lagna is always zodiacal.

(b) That for matter concerning the spouse the reckoning of houses from the upapada is always zodiacal.

(c) That for matter concerning co-borns of he native the elder from the eleventh and younger from the third, the reckoning from the Arudha lagna is zodiacal or reverse order depending on whether the sign is odd or even (and not odd footed).

(d) That for matter concerning co-borns of the spouse the houses are reckoned from the upapada in zodiacal or reverse order depending on whether the upapada sign is odd or even.

(e) That for matters concerning co-borns from the Drekkana (D-3) this zodiacal/reverse count would depend on whether the ascendant is odd or even. The first elder/younger sibling is seen from the eleventh/third house respectively and the subsequent are seen by moving, in Manduka Gati (frog jump-3 signs; after covering six signs it crawls to the next and again starts jumping to every third house).

(f) That the lords of the respective houses conjoined by other planets determine the sex of the sibling. If they

169

Page 181: Jaimini Sutra Adhyaya Sanskrit

are placed in odd signs (except Gemini & Aquarius) or in Pisces or Cancer the sex is male.

If they are placed in even signs (except Pisces & Cancer) or in Gemini or Aquarius the sex is female. If exalted the sex is male and if debilitated the sex is female. If conjoined by other planets, the strongest amongst these shall determine the sex. The Sun, Jupiter, Rahu & Mars are males. The Moon, Venus, & Ketu are female and Mercury & Saturn are neuters or may show a female/male respectively.

(g) That for matters concerning children from the Saptamsa chart (D-7) the zodiacal/reverse count would depend on the nature of the ascending sign as being odd/even respectively. The first-child is seen from the fifth house and subsequent children are seen from every third there from (i.e. 7th, 9th, 11th etc). as per manduka gati.

Normally the nodes (Rahu & Ketu) tend to limit the number of issue.

(h) The sex of child should be understood in the same manner as given in (f) for co-borns.

(i) For details concerning the child/co-born, treat the sign occupied by the lord as lagna (Paka lagna plays a crucial role) and study the planetary positions there from. The relationship between the lord of the child /co-borns and lord of lagna (and lagna itself) are to be examined as per canons in this subject. It two or more planets are together (or in Kendra) the co-borns/children work together (parasara karaka). Thus, the results should be seen from the respective houses.

The Sanskrit Alphabet

The AlphabetThe Sanskrit language developed by Brahma had 50 alphabets distributed among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. The Sanskrit word for alphabet in Sanskrit is ‘akÿara’ based on the starting alphabet ‘a’ and last alphabet ‘kÿa’. Later two other consonants were added – one before (la) and one after (jña) the last alphabet kÿa. However, Vedic Numerology employs the fifty original alphabets. The alphabets are given in table - .

Table 2: Sanskrit Alphabets

Katapayadi Varga1) Each of the Sanskrit vowels have a zero value (Table-1) and,2) Each of the consonants Ka, Ta, Pa & Ya have a numerical value of one, hence the name Katapayadi Varga. 3) The consonants following these have a sequentially higher numerical value (Table-2).

Step 1: Write the word of the stanza in Devanagari script and remove the “matra’s” and incomplete/half letters. Step 2: The numerical value of the remaining letters should be written sequentially.Step 3: The number so obtained should be reversed. Step 4: Divide this reversed number by 12. Step 5: The remainder gives the sign/house referred to in the stanza.

IllustrationFor example, the word ‘Dara’ has two full letters ‘da’, and ‘ra’, of numerical value ‘8’, & ‘2’, respectively. Thus, dara in 82, which reversed gives 28. Now, 28 divided by 12 leaves a reminder of 4. Hence, ‘dara’, would mean the fourth house or the fourth sign i.e. Cancer, depending on the context.

TranslationIf there are only benefics in K˜rak˜Õþa and Lagnamsa and aspected only by benefics, the native will surely enjoy beneficial results. Similarly, benefics are in Swamsa and its quadrants and trines and devoid of malefics, the native will surely by prosperous and knowledgeable. Both benefic and malefic planets in such quadrants & trines give mixed results.

PurportParasara explains the difference between the K˜rak˜Õþa (soul) and Lagnamsa (body) and by using the word ‘Swamsa’ to describe both when common rules are present confirms our understanding in this regard that Swamsa refers to the Navamsa placement of the ˜tmakaraka as well as the Lagna. The Lagna refers to the inherent abilities, skills and other resources of the person and in the Navamsa chart, it is called Lagnamsa where the skills etc inherited from past births are shown. The K˜rak˜Õþa, on the other hand, shows the desires and goals that have caused this birth. If beneficial planets are in trines to the Lagnamsa or aspect it, they show the availability of resources and special skills to achieve the purposes indicated by the K˜rak˜Õþa.

Frequently asked Questions

Topic: Planets

Q1. What is Sama-saptaka? Seems to be opposition."Sama-Saptaka" refers to the placement of two 'otherwise friendly planets' in mutual one-seventh houses from each other. The placement of two diremalefics in such places is not considered 'sama-saptaka'. For this purpose the planets must have at least 'SAMA' relationship in the Graha Maitrya (five types of relationship) table.

I will give two illustrations to explain my point. (1) The mutual placement of Saturn and Mars in the 1st and 7th houses causes Unmada Yoga or madness. Thus this position cannot be called Sama-saptaka, as the planets are not only natural enemies, but also temporal enemies. What is worse, both are in Marana Karaka Sthana. (2) The Mutual placement of Jupiter and Mars in the first and seventh house axis resulted in a powerful Guru-Mangala Yoga for Bhagavan Sri Ram and He cannot be defeated in battle. This is taught by Krishna as 'among warriors, I am Ram' - Bhagavat Gita.
