Larry R . Helyer
The Life and Witness of Peter
“We have long needed a full treatment of Peter in the
Gospels, Acts and in 1 and 2 Peter that includes a look
at his theology and issues of introduction. The Life and
Witness of Peter fills that need very nicely.”
Darrell L. Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary
Who was Peter and what was his true stature in the early
church? In The Life and Witness of Peter Larry Helyer seeks
to reinstate this neglected and underestimated apostle to
his rightful stature as an early Christian leader and faithful
witness to Christ .
Reconstructing Peter’s life, theology and legacy from
evidence in 1 and 2 Peter, the Gospels, Acts, Paul’s letters
and texts from the early church, Helyer renders a great
service for students of the New Testament . We are intro-
duced to Peter the eyewitness who stands behind much of
Mark’s Gospel, Peter the preacher who lends deep credibility
to the account of Acts, and Peter the letter writer whose
words glow with spiritual intelligence . Along the way we are
rewarded with a careful analysis of prominent theological
themes in Peter’s letters . And we learn much about the tradi-
tions, legends and legacy of Peter in the post-apostolic era .
Larry R. Helyer is emeritus professor of biblical studies at
Taylor university . He is the author of Exploring Jewish Litera-
ture of the Second Temple Period and The Witness of Jesus, Paul
and John, both from IVP Academic .

Interpreting Deuteronomy
Issues and Approaches
As with many other Old Testament books, study of Deuter-
onomy is in the midst of change . While for many scholars
the Documentary Hypothesis has continued to provide a
framework for interpretation, it no longer commands the
status of an “assured result .” Fresh approaches have been
developed, engendering their own debates over the book’s
formation and distinctive theological themes .
While exploring these and other facets, this volume
bridges the gap between general introductions to Deuter-
onomy and specialized scholarly literature . Written by
participants of the Tyndale Fellowship Old Testament Study
Group, it offers the insights of an international collection of
Old Testament scholars that will be valuable to students and
scholars alike .
David G. Firth is director of research and lecturer in
Old Testament at St . john’s College, Nottingham . He is
the author of 1 & 2 Samuel and The Message of Esther, and
coeditor of Interpreting the Psalms, Interpreting Isaiah, Words &
the Word and Presence, Power and Promise.
Philip S. Johnston is senior tutor at Hughes Hall,
Cambridge . He has taught at Belfast, St . Andrews and
Oxford . His other books include Les Psaumes, Interpreting the
Psalms (coeditor with David Firth), Shades of Sheol and The
Land of Promise (coeditor with Peter Walker) .

Exploring the Religion of Ancient Israel
Priest, Prophet, Sage and People
Exploring Topics in Christianity Series
”[Chalmers’s] sensitive distinctions between state
religion (involving the experts) and family religion (as
practiced by the common people) . . . will be particu-
larly helpful for those desiring to read the Old Testa-
ment in more informed ways.”
John Walton, author of The Lost World of Genesis One
”A fine user-friendly guide.”
John Goldingay, author of OId Testament Theology
Aaron Chalmers gives students a unique introduction to the
religious and social world of ancient Israel . The first part
explores the major religious offices mentioned in the Old
Testament, including prophets, priests, sages and kings . As
well as considering what these key people said and did, the
author traces the process through which one became recog-
nized as a prophet, priest or sage, and where each of these
offices were located in ancient Israel . The second part of the
book focuses on the beliefs and practices of the common
people—the group that made up the majority of ancient
Israel’s population .
Aaron Chalmers is senior lecturer in biblical studies at
Tabor Adelaide in Adelaide, Australia . He has published
many articles in scholarly journals .

A Mouth Full of Fire
The Word of God in the Words of Jeremiah
New Studies in Biblical Theology Series
“It is extraordinarily rare for a reading of a biblical
book to be simultaneously creative and convincing,
but Dr Andrew Shead has managed it.”
From the foreword by D. A. Carson
In the book of jeremiah, the vocabulary of “word” and
“words” is uniquely prevalent . The formulas marking divine
speech play an unprecedented role in giving the book its
final narrative form and theological shape . In fact, “the
word of the Lord” is arguably the book’s main character .
As a result, a distinctive and powerful word theology can be
seen to emerge from the unfolding narrative .
Shead then brings this reading of jeremiah to bear on
issues in contemporary theology, including the problem of
divine agency and the doctrine of Scripture . He concludes
by engaging jeremiah’s doctrine of the Word of God with
karl Barth . The prophet’s major contribution emerges from
his careful differentiation of “word” and “words .”
Andrew G. Shead is head of Old Testament at Moore
College, Sydney, where he lectures in Hebrew, Old Testa-
ment and music . He is the author of The Open Book and the
Sealed Book: Jeremiah 32 in Its Greek and Hebrew Recensions and
numerous articles, essays and reviews .

The Unfolding Mystery of the Divine Name
The God of Sinai in Our Midst
“A fascinating and erudite study. Don’t be misled by
the title: Knowles’s goal is to get at the very heart
of the Bible’s presentation of God through a careful
survey of selected texts. His work will surely be of
interest to scholars and lay readers alike.”
James Kugel, author, The Bible as it Was
When Moses asked God to show him his glory, the Lord
passed before him and proclaimed his name . And from that
name cascaded a promise of grace and love, compassion and
faithfulness, forgiveness and slowness to anger . The story is
told in Exodus 34:5-7, but the resonant name reverberates
through the corridors of Scripture .
Michael knowles teases out the rich dimensions and
implications of this name by listening carefully to Exodus 34
and its biblical echoes . He particularly tunes his ear to the
spiritual meditations of later sages . In tracing the unfolding
mystery of the divine name throughout the span of Israel’s
story, he finds it startlingly resolved in the God of Sinai
becoming present in our midst .
The manifold name of God has long captivated those
who trace their spiritual ancestry to Abraham, whether they
are jewish, Christian or Muslim . This book brings this spiri-
tual quest into dialogue with Scripture and tradition, and
invites us to experience this God of the eternal name .
Michael P. Knowles is professor and George F . Hurlburt
Chair of Preaching at McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton,
Ontario . He is the author of The Folly of Preaching: Models and
Methods and We Preach Not Ourselves: Paul on Proclamation.

The Quest for the Trinity
The Doctrine of God in Scripture, History and Modernity
“It is rare to write something which can be both a
textbook and a real intervention in a debate, but Steve
Holmes has pulled it off.”
Karen Kilby, University of Nottingham
The doctrine of the Trinity was settled in the fourth century,
and maintained, with only very minor disagreement or
development, by all strands of the church—Western and
Eastern, Protestant and Catholic—until the modern period .
In the twentieth century, there arose a sense that the
doctrine had been neglected and stood in need of recovery .
In The Quest for the Trinity, Holmes takes us on a remark-
able journey through 2,000 years of the Christian doctrine
of God . We witness the church’s discovery of the Trinity
from the biblical testimony, its crucial patristic develop-
ments, and medieval and Reformation continuity . We are
also confronted with the questioning of traditional dogma
during the Enlightenment, and asked to consider anew the
character of the modern Trinitarian revival .
Stephen R. Holmes (Ph .D ., king’s College London) is
senior lecturer in systematic theology at the university of
St . Andrews, Scotland . His books include Listening to the Past:
The Place of Tradition in Theology and The SCM Reader in Chris-
tian Doctrine, edited with Lindsey Hall and Murray Rae .

Four Views
Spectrum Multiview Books Series
Is morality dependent upon belief in God?
God and Morality: Four Views lets us listen in on a debate
on the nature of morality by four distinguished voices in
moral philosophy . Christian philosophers keith Yandell
and Mark Linville and two self-identified atheists/agnostics,
Evan Fales and Michael Ruse, clearly and honestly represent
their differing views on the nature of morality .
Important similarities and differences emerge as each
contributor states their case, receives criticism from the
others and responds . Of particular value for use as an
academic text, these four essays and responses, covering the
naturalist moral non-realist, naturalist moral realist, moral
essentialist and moral particularist views, will foster critical
thinking and contribute to the development of a well-
informed position on this very important issue .

in Fort Worth, Texas .

Mapping the Origins Debate
Six Models of the Beginning of Everything
“Mapping the Origins Debate offers readers a helpful
map of the confusing and noisy terrain of America’s
troubled conversation about origins. Readers will
appreciate Gerald Rau’s calm and reasoned guide to
the debate; he provides light in an area where most
books offer only heat.”
Karl Giberson, Stonehill College
Gerald Rau offers a fair-minded overview of the six predomi-
nant models used to explain the origins of the universe, of
life, of species and of humans . He aims to show the contours
of current debates both among Christians and between
Christians and nontheists .
Throughout the survey, Rau investigates the nature of
science and the differing philosophies of science operating
in the debates . He cogently identifies the role philosophical
assumptions play in determining what counts as significant
evidence and how the evidence is interpreted . In the end, he
shows not just what the differences are among the options
but why they disagree and why we shouldn’t expect any
resolution as long as the philosophical assumptions remain
fixed .
Gerald Rau (Ph .D ., Cornell) is founder and chief editor
at Professional English International, Inc ., a team providing
high-quality editing services in English academic writing,
based at National Chung Cheng university in Chiayi,
Taiwan . He was previously an adjunct professor teaching
biology courses at Wheaton College and at Trinity Christian
College in Palos Heights, Illinois .

Social Psychology in Christian Perspective
Exploring the Human Condition
Human social interaction is varied, complex and always
changing . How we perceive each other and ourselves, how
individuals interact within groups, and how groups are
structured—all these are the domain of social psychology .
Many have doubted, however, that a full-fledged social
psychology textbook can successfully be written from a
Christian perspective . Inevitably, some say, when attempting
to integrate theology and social psychology, one discipline
must suffer at the expense of the other .
Angela Sabates counters that thinking with a well-
researched social psychology textbook that makes full use of
the unique view of human persons coming down to us from
the Christian tradition . She highlights Christian contribu-
tions to a wide range of questions from the dynamics of
persuasion to the social psychology of violence .
Angela M. Sabates (Ph .D ., Northwestern university)
is associate professor of psychology at Bethel university
in St . Paul, Minnesota . She has worked professionally at
Cornerstone Family Counseling Center (Fairfax, Virginia),
Minirth-Meir and Byrd Clinic (Arlington, Virginia) and
Reston Psychological Center and Lab School of Washington
(Fairfax, Virginia, and Washington, D .C .) . Sabates was a
contributor to IVP Academic’s Christian Counseling Ethics
and is the author of a number of articles for Christian Coun-
seling Today .

Human social interaction is varied, complex and always changing. How we perceive each other and ourselves, how individuals interact within groups, and how groups are structured—all these are the domain of social psychology.
Many have doubted, however, that a full-fledged social psychology textbook can successfully be written from a Christian perspective. Inevitably, some say, when attempting to integrate theology and social psychology, one discipline must suffer at the expense of the other.
Angela Sabates counters that thinking by demonstrating how these two disciplines can indeed be brought together in a fruitful way. She crisply covers key topics in social psychology, utilizing research that is well grounded in the empirical and theoretical literature, while demonstrating how a distinctively Christian approach can offer fresh ideas and understandings.
Why doesn’t our behavior always match what we say we believe?
How and when are we most likely to be persuaded?
What is the social psychology of violence?
How reliable are eyewitness testimonies?
Are racism and prejudice on the decline or are we just better at hiding them?
Sabates draws out the implications of a Christian view of human persons on these and other central subjects within the well-established framework of social psychological study.
This volume is for those looking for a core text that makes use of a Christian theological perspective to explore what the science of psychology suggests to us about the nature of human social interaction.
Angela M. Sabates (Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois) is associate professor of psychology at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She previously taught at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida, and she has worked professionally at Cornerstone Family Counseling Center (Fairfax, Virginia), Minirth-Meir and Byrd Clinic (Arlington, Virginia) and Reston Psychological Center and Lab School of Washington (Fairfax, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.).She contributed, “The Child Patient,” to Christian Counseling Ethics (IVP), and has written other articles for Christian Counseling Today.

Theology for Better Counseling
Trinitarian Reflections for Healing and Formation
“The great risk of twenty-first-century Christian coun-
seling is becoming uprooted, neglecting the theolog-
ical essence of our work. Dr. Holeman’s book . . . is an
important corrective.”
Mark R. McMinn, coauthor, Integrative Psychotherapy
At one time, Virginia Todd Holeman confesses, she thought
familiarity with the Bible was theological training enough
for a Christian counselor . But she soon found that clients
wanted more from her than the best clinical theories and
techniques . Their pain was awakening deep questions, and
many of Holeman’s clients were coming to her office in a
state of “theological disequilibrium .”
This led Holeman to a serious study of theology that
opened up new pathways between the discipline of theo-
logical reflection and the practice of counseling . Theology
for Better Counseling is the mature fruit of that explora-
tion . Her “trinitarian reflections” encourage students and
practitioners to take the time to align their theological
commitments, therapeutic practices and professional
ethics—knowing it will have the most practical effects on
their counseling sessions .
Virginia Todd Holeman is professor of counseling at
Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, kentucky . She
previously worked at New Life Family Ministries in Akron,
Ohio . Holeman is a licensed psychologist in Ohio and a
licensed marriage and family therapist in kentucky . As a
member of the American Association for Marriage and
Family Therapy, she leads workshops and seminars around
the country .

In this comprehensive text, Holly Allen and Christine Ross
offer a complete framework for intentional intergenera-
tional Christian formation . They provide the theoretical
foundations for intergenerationality, showing how learning
and spiritual formation are better accomplished through
intergenerational contexts . It is not just elders teaching
youth; learning also takes place when adults discover fresh
insights from children . Then the authors give concrete guid-
ance for intergenerational praxis on how worship, learning,
community and service can all be achieved intergeneration-
ally . Case studies of intergenerational congregations provide
models for how a culture of intergenerationality can be
created in local churches .
Holly Catterton Allen (Ph .D ., Talbot School of
Theology) is professor of Christian ministries and director
of child and family studies at john Brown university in
Siloam Springs, Arkansas . She is a founding member of the
Society for Children’s Spirituality and the editor of Nurturing

Missional God, Missional Church
Hope for Re-evangelizing the West
“[Draws] us deeper and deeper into a thrilling vision
of the inner life of the triune missional God. . . . This is
the book we will return to again and again!”
Darrell Johnson, pastor, First Baptist Church,
Vancouver, BC
With the reality of broad-scale secularization in the West
and the cloud of insignificance that hangs over the Western
church as result, is there any hope for the re-evangelization
of the West?
In this comprehensive theology of mission, Ross Hast-
ings directs the fretful gaze of the church to the trinitarian
commission of john 20 . There we find jesus granting peace
to his disciples by breathing his Spirit on them, after which
these “sent ones” went out to participate in God’s ongoing
mission to the world—to call together the community of
shalom .
Building on the works of David Bosch, Lesslie Newbigin,
Christopher Wright and Darrell Guder, Hastings corrects
numerous dichotomies that hinder the church, including
the twin threats of isolation from and accommodation to the
surrounding culture .
Ross Hastings (Ph .D ., university of St . Andrews) is
associate professor of mission studies at Regent College,
Vancouver . He has also served as a pastor, most recently at
Peace Portal Alliance Church in British Columbia .

Commentary on John
Volume 1
Ancient Christian Texts Series
Cyril of Alexandria (ca . 378-444), one of the most brilliant
representatives of the Alexandrian theological tradition, is
best known for championing the term Theotokos (mother of
God) in opposition to Nestorius of Constantinople . Cyril’s
great Commentary on john, offered here in the Ancient
Christian Text series in two volumes, predates the Nestorian
controversy, however, and focuses its theological firepower
against Arianism . The commentary, which is addressed to
catechists, displays Cyril’s breathtaking mastery of the full
content of the Bible and his painstaking attention to detail
as he seeks to offer practical teaching on the cosmic story of
God’s salvation .
David Maxwell provides readers with the first complete
English translation of the text since the nineteenth century .
It rests on Pusey’s critical edition of the Greek text and puts
on display Cyril’s theological interpretation of Scripture
and his appeal to the patristic tradition that preceded him .
Today’s readers will find the commentary an indispensable
tool for understanding Cyril’s approach to Scripture .
The Rev. David R. Maxwell (Ph .D ., university of
Notre Dame) is associate professor of systematic theology
at Concordia Seminary in St . Louis, Missouri . His primary
research interest is in the early church, particularly the
christological controversies of the fourth through sixth
centuries .
The Rev. Joel C. Elowsky (Ph .D ., Drew university)
is associate professor of theology at Concordia university
Wisconsin . He has served as the operations manager for
the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture and has
edited the two volumes on john’s Gospel in that series . He is
also the volume editor for We Believe in the Holy Spirit in the
Ancient Christian Doctrine series . This is his second edited
volume in the Ancient Christian Texts series .

The Revelation to John
A Commentary on the Greek Text of the Apocalypse
The Revelation to John by Stephen Smalley is a magisterial
interpretation of john’s Apocalypse as a grand drama, which
can only be properly understood in light of john’s Gospel
and letters and in the context of the johannine commu-
nity . As such, it offers the reader a significantly different
approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most
contemporary commentaries . Working directly from the
Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical
and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and
scholars alike .
Stephen S. Smalley (Ph .D ., Cambridge) is an interna-
tionally recognized johannine scholar and dean emeritus
of Chester Cathedral, England . His previous books include
Christ and Spirit in the New Testament, John: Evangelist and Inter-
preter, Thunder and Love: John’s Revelation and John’s Community
and 1, 2, 3 John in the Word Biblical Commentary .

“A paraphrase is tricky business. Too much freedom
leads to the loss of the original text’s meaning. Too
